>> that brings you up to date on that story. >> let's get to the weather because now we are in for a cool down, taking a live look outside. from our emeryville kpaem. you can see, a little bit of shaking there in the strong wind gusts. >> what effect are the winds having our our temperatures? i understand there is an advisory out there as well. abc7 news middle east jit has an update. >> we have the wind advisory for good reason. guchting to 37 miles per hour in fairfield. so that wind advisory is mainly for the north bay hills. this lasting until midnight tonight because we could see gusts up to 55 miles per hour. that brings a high fire danger with the winds and the potential there for downed trees and power lines. 9:00 later on tonight, we still have those winds whipping especially in the north bay, between 20 and 40 miles per hour. as we go into the early morning hours of our sunday, the winds are going to calm down significantly. the full accuweather forecast in

a few minutes, guys. >> thank you very much. baseball season is almost here and giants fans are more than ready. today the annual fan fest brought giants, players and coaches together with the folks who fill the seats at at&t park. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard is live at at&t. cornell, this year, lots of excitement about new players. >> reporter: yeah, for sure, eric. is it too early to say go giants? i don't think so. just a gorgeous day here at at&t park for fan fest. you know, after a disappointing season last year, many fans are hoping the new players can help turn things around. >> we're doing it this year. >> that's right. yes, we are. >> reporter: giants fan fest is pure tradition. a rare chance to wander the field, even see your favorite players up close taking selfies, like first baseman brandan belt. 30,000 fans converged on at&t park. many hoping this season will be a winner. >> i know it can't be worse than last year, so, no, i'm excited. they got some new players.

because you may have to deal with lane closures. caltrans is surveying the area to raise vertical clearances to the standard 16 1/2 feet. the far left lane on westbound 580 to westbound 80 will be closed 6:00 a.m. to noon, next saturday, to southbound 880 during the same time. well, in other news, two mechanical mal-fuchss involving a spirit airlines aircraft have prompted a federal investigation. our media partner, the bay area news group, reports one of those incidents happened on february 4th during a flight from oakland to las vegas. a midengine rattle prompted the pilot to return to vegas and just a week earlier, people on the same plane were sickened by fumes. spirit has since grounded the plane. the faa says both incidents are unrelated. washington, d.c.'s mayor is in the bay area today to try to lure tech firms to the nation's capital. mayor measurial bowser has been taking a look at the apple store

in union scare. the company is opening a global flagship store in d.c. and she wanted to see the one that is already operating. the mayor has been meeting with yelp, oh opening an office in the nation's capital with 500 employees. >> we're always telling people about our city and what we have to offer. there are a lot of opportunities to move in, to develop and we have a very talented educated workforce who is ready to get to work. >> it's a first of its kind trip for the mayor who is targeting the west coast to attract tech business to her city. she wraps up her bay area pitch on monday. following a similar tech trip this week to the bay area, canadian prime minister justin trudeau spent today in los angeles seen here with l.a.'s mayor. trudeau wrapped up his two-day visit in san francisco yesterday where he met with governor jerry brown and lieutenant governor gavin newsom. protesters face off at the university of washington in seattle. a brawl broke out this afternoon

as the conservative group patriot prayer appeared on campus at the invitation of college republicans. police responded with pepper spray and took several people into custody. republicans say they hope to show that free speech is something that should not be feared. neighbors had their say about the future of oakland during a design session today. abc7 news was in downtown oakland as community leaders and residents discussed a wide range of issues from land use and development and housing to transportation, arts and culture to help save the future of the downtown area. >> we can identify priorities for projects. for policies and programs. for strategies. for specific places that we'd like to see developed a certain way, but also make sure they're inclusive and provide opportunities for as many of our citizens as possible. >> today was the first of four neighborhood sessions. we've posted the location and times of the upcoming meetings on our website at abc7 news.com. >> strong wind has forced the pyeongchang olympic men's downhill to be postponed. while sweden won the first gold

for the games today. how did the usa f.a.i.r.? - >> reporter: the first full day of competition ended without any medals from team usa, americans failing to take home any in speed skating, biathlon and cross-country. there have been disappointments in curling, brother and sister team matt hamilton losing again, this time to china. now at 1-5, it's looking highly unlikely they'll make it to the next round. for 18-year-old short track speed skater, things are much more optimistic. finishing second in her heat to advance to the 500-meter quarterfinals. on the men's side, three-time olympic medalist failed to qualify for the final in the 1,500 but has two races left to add to his medal total. vice president mike pence made an appearance at the short track event while sitting next to south korean president moon jae-in. after watching a few heats, pence headed back to washington. an historic moment here with the drop of a puck.

the first olympic game featuring korea's mixed women's hockey team with players from both north and south korea. it was a north korean who almost put her team in front early, but switzerland wins easily 8-0. hopes for medals for team usa in alpine skiing and snowboarding. alex stone, abc news, pyeongchang. an effort is underway to ban youth tackle football in california. two state lawmakers introduced a bill this week that would outlaw tackle football until high school. they cite growing concern over head injuries. this would affect thousands of children ages 5 to 15 who play pop warner football. the bill is set to be t up this spring. if it's passed, california would be the first state to set a minimum age requirement for tackle football. just ahead, a boy's basketball team has learned that winning isn't everything. >> coming up, why the team decided to forfeit a playoff game to support one of their teammates. >> and a special day at a san francisco candy shop. how every pur

a sweet gesture today from one san francisco small businessowner and her customers. abc7 news was at the candy store in russian hill as diane campbell and her two recruits, 9-year-old malia and 13-year-old kaya helped customers get their sugar on while gathering tips for the lymphoma and leukemia society. gamble is helping a childhood friend's son who is suffering from the disease. >> it's amazing. hundreds already in the tip jar. sales are great. families are coming out to support us. our customers are supporting us. and it's just -- it's such a happy, joyful occasion. >> that's a win-win. campbell is also donating 20% of the event's sales. malia and kaya's mom has

committed to matching that amount. a group of high school basketball players in washington is showing the true meaning of team. they forfeited a playoff game so their teammate corey could with his family while his dad had heart surgery. he said he would play in the gme instead of going to the hospital. on the way, they realized it wasn't the truth. to reroute the bus so their teammate could be with his dad, ending their signs at that moment. >> i was very proud of the decision that the guys made to give up what they've been working for for one of their other players. >> his dad is still recovering, but he also said he's very proud of his son's team. >> as he should be. it's not a new practice to turn trash into art. >> but there is an important member within these sculptures. still ahead, call it awareness,000 art and it's on display in san francisco. i'm mike shumann here at oracle nar, san antonio and golden state are going to tip off on abc7 at 5:30. we have a preview coming up.

all right. thanks for staying with us. let get you an update now on that breaking news we first brought you at the top of the hour. from what we understand, 40 of the 4 passengers have been rescued from the ferry that got stuck on a reef just a mile and a half or so from shore. this in the berkeley marina about 2:40 this afternoon. witnesses tell abc7 news all on board were taking part in an autobahn bird watching cruise. rescue crews are waiting for high tide to offload the last three people on board, two of which are crew members. so far, no reports of injuries and no word on any daniels to the boast. we will keep you posted on abc7news.com and tonight at 11:00. unique sculptures of sea creatures created from the very material killing them and polluting our oceans.

it's on display at ft. mason this weekend. at this year's san francisco tribal and tech art show. original artists have molded pieces from discarded fish net that wash up on shore or float in the ocean, hoping to bring awareness and change to the growing problem. the exhibition is open until 7:00 tonight and tomorrow 11:00 in the morning until 5:00 in the afternoon. something most parents discourage, but today parents were cheered on to play in the mud. kids took part in the mile-long muddy mile course in burlingame today. doug shared this video with abc7 news of his son, 8-year-old jordan taking part in the event. the city holds the event that features 15 obstacles, and, of course, a lot of mud. in our your accuweather forecast with drew tuma. >> accuweather tracking winds of change. it will finally bring our temperatures back to reality for a couple of days. another warm-up hits us. live dopplar 7 along with satellite right now, it's quiet.

unfortunately. we want to see some rain on live dopplar 7. just not in the forecast the next 24 hours. what we do have right now, those winds are whipping to the north, especially. santa rosa right now, wind gusts 25 miles per hour. certainly in the delta, that's where they're the strongest at this hour 39-mile-per-hour wind gusts in fairfield. concord clocking 20-mile-per-hour wind gusts. the wind direction is pulling down cooler air from canada. right now the 24-hour temperature change across the board, we are cooler in all locations than we were at this point yesterday. even these these numbers some ten degrees cooler in spots. still on the mild side for february. current numbers in the 60s and 70s. you can see how warm it was yesterday. 71 in santa rosa, 70 the current number in san rafael. down to 62, though, in san francisco. mild and comfortable in the south bay. 71 in san jose. hayward checking in at 66 degrees. here is a call from accuweather, over the next 12 hours, plenty of stars out there. after the wind religious elacks after midnight tonight,

temperatures are going to drop pretty quickly. a rather chilly night for most. 309s in the north bay from napa to studies. 46 the low in san francisco. dropped about 43 in san jose. while we're watching, future weather tomorrow will start out with clear skies but midday, clouds are going to bubble up. filtered sunshine by that lunchtime hour tomorrow, this really week ripple of energy is going to slide by us right along the coast. future weather is showing you tomorrow evening, it's trying to bring us a pop-up shower, mainly on the coast. unfortunately, it's not a widespread rain event like we really need since february has been so dry. i wouldn't be surprised especially in our coastal communities if a shower tries to pop up tomorrow. sun's up at 7:04 in the morning. clouds arrive midday. by 4:00, under partly sunny skies, we'll see temperatures back to where they should be for this time of year. 60 in san francisco, 66 in san jose. noticeably cooler to finish off
