live where you live, this is "abc7 news." fire and smoke on a plane forced to evacuate. the passengers delayed for hours in orange county, are finally headed to san jose. in fact, they're in the air right now. >> for the latest on this developing news, right away let's get to our reporter. katie? >> reporter: that arrival time keeps getting pushed back, but the plane should be landing here in an hour, which makes it four hours late. the trouble started when the plane was pushing back from the gate. the ground crusade there was a fire in the black of the plane. and 139 passengers and five crew members all had to use the slides to get off the plane.

fire and rescue crews were waiting for them when they did. but the airport tweeted there were a few minor injuries, but nobody had to go to the hospital. one passenger posted her reaction and another talked to us via facetime. >> our flight was smoking. girl, my heart is like beating. >> the stewardess screamed, evacuate, evacuate. you could see the smoke coming out of the tail of the plane. >> reporter: there was a partial taxiway closure during the incident. but operations were back to normal around 8:30. the faa tells us tonight that the fire was in the auxiliary power unit, and it was extinguished by the fire suppression system. katie marzullo, "abc7 news."

a cal train trashed into a vehicle sparking a fire tonight at the cal train crossing at charleston road. everyone in the vehicle got out sa safely. the crash caused a traffic backup in the air and slowed train service. a move to silence the national anthem has sparked debate at an east bay school. the student leadership at california high pulled the star spangled banner from school rallies. >> the rallied started and i realized there was no national anthem. >> reporter: for dennis, the omission of the star spangled banner was unusual. he was told the student leadership removed the song due to what many consider to be racist lyrics in the unsung verses. the student body president noted the third verse, which in part says no refuge could save the

hire ling and slave. to think that our nation's anthem had the word slave leaves the speechless. but dennis has a different take. >> the importance of singing the national anthem to honor those who have sacrificed their lives. >> reporter: cal high has struggled with racial issues before. two years ago, racist graffiti was found on campus, including in the bathrooms. the parts we talked with say the national anthem is sacred. >> how can you start any event without the national anthem? >> they have to do the national anthem. this is respect for the country. >> reporter: as for the district, the spokesperson said it just learned about the student leadership's position, and is looking into it. lillian kim, "abc7 news." a few final words from a

dying woman helped sheriff's deputies catch two people suspected of killing her. a passing driving spotted the victim bleeding badly and crawling at about 2:00 this morning. deputies arrested a man and woman, both 19, in modesto, based on the information the victim provided before she died at the hospital. no word on a motive. tonight, san jose's police chief is trying to reassure members of a latino community concerned about immigration policy. >> really awful stories that you hear from some of these families. it's important for them to understand that the members of this police department are not the enemy. >> the chief said he received positive feedback from the community after speaking at the sacred heart of jesus parish on sunday. he said he will assure people that san jose police do not enforce federal immigration laws. in a move that civil rights groups say could endanger

transgender students, the education department will no longer investigate complaints from those students over the use of bathrooms matching their gender identity that's contrary to a mandate by the obama administration that directed public schools to allow students to use bathrooms that aleaned with their gender identity. president trump plans to spend $1.5 trillion to fix america's aging roads and infrastructure, but only a fraction of that money will come from the federal government. from thehe president's plan cal states, local governments and even private companies to invest in projects nationwide. president trump also intends to speed up the permitting process. president trump's proposal light put projects like california's high speed rail system at risk. right now, the state believes high speed rail will cost $64 billion. the president's budget leaves only $20 billion to spend

south african police believe a man killed by lions was a poacher. they found his remains next to a hunting rifle and ammunition. police are trying to identify him and are hopeful they can because of the lions leaving his
