good tuesday morning. i'm kendis gibson. >> and i'm diane macedo. here are some of the top stories we're following on "world news now." the white house is not saying whether the president believes the domestic abuse allegations made by the ekts wives of rob porter. abc news has learned porter told senior officials his first wife 36s black eye was the result of an accidental fall during an argument. fire in a power unit on a southwest airlines plane forced more than 140 people to evacuate. the jet was about to leave the john wayne airport in southern california when the fire broke out. some minor injuries were reported. and issuing a warning to facebook and other social media sites, clean up your toxic content or we're pulling our ad money.

white house is still strugging to explain how all of this unfolded. >> reporter: three senior administration officials with three different stories. >> as soon as rob porter was proven wrong when had the photos came on wednesday, he was gone almost immediately. >> he learned the full information by tuesday. >> we learned of the extent of the situation involving rob porter last tuesday evening and within 24 hours his resignation had been accepted and announced. >> reporter: new details about why the white house stood by former staff secretary rob porter for more than 12 hours. according to two sources with knowledge of porter's story, he explained the black eye was the result of a struggle over venesian glass. they struggled as porter tried to stop her and during the struggle, she accidently bruised her eye.

in the second case, porter said he was merely tapping on the glass pane of their door. his knuckle went through the glass and he tried to enter to wrap it up. hours after hearing porter's account she announced his resignation while defending him. >> they have had full trust in his ands and performance. >> reporter: in "time" willoughby fired back at president trump for appearing to take her ex-husband's word over hers. and turning to terrifying moments for the president's family. his daughter in law taken to a new york hospital after opening a package containing a white powder. they underwent tests as a precaution. but the substance turned out to be harmless. it was postmarked in boston and contained an angry letter to

her husband donald trump jr. and fallout after calling for a release of a memo and then deciding not to declassify the democrats rebuttal. pierre thomas has the details. >> reporter: some accusing the president of a double standard involving the russia probe. he decided not to release the democrat's response to the declassified republican memo which claimed the fbi relied on a dossier to contain a search warrant against carter page. mr. trump tweeting the democrat's memo is political, adding the democrats knew it because of sources and methods and more to be heavily redacted. this after releasing the republican's memo despite fbi's grave concern. >> this week the white house has a new found admiration for the fbi.

>> reporter: sourgss say the democrats response challenges the republicaning memo by showing the dossier was far from the only source used to get that warrant. the president told democrats to redo and send back in proper form. congressman schiff is said to meet with fbi officials soon. >> somebody should get that car alarm fixed there in d.c. president trump has spoken to the russian leader, vladimir putin for the first time since december. trump expressed condolences about the deadly plane crash near moscow that killed 71 people. and spoke about the mideast peace process ahead of putin's meeting with the palestinians. the two also discussed the nuclear standoff with north korea, with president trump saying more steps are needed. and the senate is now in the mid of an open ended immigration

seized and then lied under oath. each faces up to 60 years. testimony during the trial described an elite unit that was out of control. officials say a few thousand cases may have been tainted. and more than 60 children have now died during this flu season. the latest may include a 5-year-old girl in new jersey who had had flu-like symptoms. health officials say that 5-year-old girl in brooklyn died of flu. she's the city's fourth young victim. oklahoma has the been hit hard. and the perry school district north of oklahoma city is the latest to cancel classes because so many students are sick. a new study warns sea levels are rising faster than we once thought. previous studies showed they were rising at a constant rate. but this research shows they are accelerating.

this morning on "world news now a scare for the trump family. taken to the hospital after opening after a package containing white powder. new details about what former white house aide, rob porter, told senior staff after his ex-wives went public with abuse claims. this as the white house struggles to explain its handling of the scandal. and a woman accused of kidnapping a baby and raising her as her own since birth and why the victim's asking for leniency. and the middle school kids who are told they must say yes if asked to the middle school dance. has the effort for kindness gone too far?

>> announcer: from abc news this is "world news now." we're going to get right to that big scare for the president's family. they're trying to find out who sent a package to president trump's oldest son containing a mysterious white powder and angry note. >> vanessa was taken to the hospital along with two others after she opened the envelope and complained of feeling sick. it happened at their manhattan apartment. the secret service and nypd are investigating a suspicious package sent to don trump jr. vanessa called 911 just after 10:00 a.m. telling police she was feeling dizzy. firefighters treating vanessa trump and two others at the new york apartment before taking them to the hospital where they had tests done as a precaution.

donald trump jr. tweeting thankful that vanessa and my children are safe and unharmed after the incredibly scary situation that occurred this morning. truly disgusting that certain individuals choose to express their opposing views with such disturbing behavior. the white house reacting. >> i know the president spoke with her. beyond that, it's an ongoing and active investigation. i can say that the president has spoken with her in the last hour. >> reporter: in march 2016 a package with white powder was sent to the president's other son, eric. also nonhazardous. and one sent to the president's campaign office, addressed to mr. trump himself. that turned out to be harmless too. ivanka tweeting "thinking of mrs. vanessa trump and wishing i was by her side today.

no one deserves to be frightened this way. there is no excuse." and all we know is that it had a very angry letter directed at don jr. but no doubt we're just at the beginning of this investigation. and the former white house staff secretary reportedly played down alligations after his two ex-wives publicly accused him of domestic violence. porter told officials he did not punch his first wife. he said the black eye was an accident saying she fell while he tried to stop her from smashing a vase during an argument. sources say porter also denied punching through the door of the second wife's home while separated. he says he was tapping on the glass when his knuckle went through it. president trump has defended porter but failed to mention his accusers and the white house is refusing to say whether he believes the women. >> does he believe rob porter's accusers? >> as i just said the president along with the entire

administration take domestic violence very seriously and believe all allegations need to be thoroughly investigated. >> that doesn't answer the question. >> that's where we are right now. >> in a washington post op-ed, porter's first wife says she lived in constant fear of his anger. says the abuse chipped away at her self worth and took years to get her life back on track. president trump has unveiled a $4.4 trillion budget that includes a billion dollar infrastructure plan. he's also asking for nearly 700 billion in defense spending. but the president wants to slash billions from programs like food stamps, housing subsidies and medicare. and stocks are rebounding from some of the recent losses.

the dow climbed 410 points which is 1.7% and overnight the top markets posting solid gains as well. a 14-hour standoff is over but not before he killed his girlfriend, her two aunts and himself. three police officers were also injured but expected to recover. the siege started when the two older women arrived to try to help their niece. alex perez tells us what happened next. >> officers are swarming this detroit neighborhood after a frantic call of shots fired. the standoff lasting for some 14 hours. >> just a ton of police activity unfolding right now. >> reporter: police say the gunman barricaded inside his home had killed two other women

outside when he opened fire on arriving officers, wounding three. >> the dps officers were pinned down for at least an hour. the ordeal began when the gunman, lance smith, became involved in a domestic situation. the two women gunned down, investigators say were trying to help. >> the suspect was heard saying i will not be taken without a fight. >> reporter: authorities finally able to enter the home. discovering the bodies of his suspect and the girlfriend inside. the officer's injuries are not life threatening. alex perez, abc news, chicago. a suburban cleveland man is the second man to be arrested in connection the shooting of two ohio police officers. they say jared lossen bought the gun, even though he has a criminal record and not allowed to own a gun. the officers were killed while responding to a domestic disturbance call. a former all-star pitcher in major league baseball is accused of drug trafficking.

police say after a traffic stop they found 44 pounds of white powder believed to be cocaine at the home of esteban loaiza. he spent more than a dozen years in the big leagues, he made more than $43 million in his baseball career. and one of the largest advertisers in the world is threatening to pull ads off its sites like facebook and google over what it calls toxic content. >> unilever saying it's become a swamp of fake news, sexism and racism. with brands like dove and ben & jerry's, unilever spent nearly $2 billion. it may come as no surprise they say they have already entered into talks to resolve the issue. i think when you spend that much in advertising, you get a quick response.

and a building developer painted over graffiti and tore the buildings down. they argued the buildings were his to treat as he pleased. but the judge said he failed to wait for the proper permits and violated the visual artistic rights act. the artists say the buildings once represented the largest open air museum. the property is now luxury condos. >> they fought back as graffiti artists and won. >> it's not the first time graffiti artists have won this kind of a case. the judge singled out forty artists and said those artists merited the status to be protected by the federal law. >> so art pays, even if it's graffiti. a firehouse made quite a splash.

a fire in a power unit broke out. everyone on board had to use the emergency chutes to evacuate. there were minor injuries reported. the plane was supposed to fly to san jose in california. and three people and a gunman are dead after a 14-hour standoff in detroit. police say it started when two women arrived at home when their niece was having trouble with her boyfriend. they were shot and killed. and when police arrived, they also met gunfire. three were wounded. the gunman kept shooting. >> the officers were pinned down at least an hour while shots were being fired. >> investigators say the gunman shot and killed his girlfriend before turning the gun on himself. he had no criminal history. a relative says the gunman suffered from mental

illness but authorities have not confirmed that. an ohio man is accused of buying the gun used to kill two police officers over the weekend. the alleged killer had a criminal record so he could not buy it himself so he paid a friend. two officers in suburban columbus were shot while responding to a domestic disturbance call. and they're trying to figure out whether a helicopter had a crash resistant fuel system. that safety feature is not standard on that model but may have been added later. the helicopter burst into flames when it crashed and it happened on tribal lands where air tours are not as highly regulated as those inside the national park. thousand of vehicles have been added to a do not drive list because of concerns the air bags could rupture. it affects ford ranger and mazda pickup trucks. high risk of breaking during the crash. they called the trucks an immediate safety risk. we're turning to a winter tradition.
