were reported. some of them were moderately ill, nausea and vomiting. there was one student who was in critical condition, but not life threatening. you can see the police outside the school, there were a number of first responders here, trying to make sure that everyone was okay. we hear that one school came forward reporting that they had ingested some sort of substance, we don't know how they ingested that substance, whether it was eating it or drinking it and then a number of other students did come forward. >> all of the parents of the students have been contacted. other parents of the middle school are being contacted just in an abundance of caution to make sure that if they see any symptoms or have any concerns that they seek medical help for their child immediately. >> reporter: the school also released a statement that said those students who have been

identified as being affected are receiving medical care and their families are being contacted. school officials are saying they want all students who aren't feeling well should come forward, they don't want anyone to get in trouble, they just want to make sure that everyone is alive and healthy. breaking news now coming out of hawaii where a united airlines flight from san francisco has landed safely after one of its two engines failed over the pacific. take a look, that is a damaged engine right there. you can see the cover is just missing from it. this video is from a passenger who tweeted from united flight 1175. that flight took off from sfo just after 9:00 this morning and landed at honolulu airport. all the passenger s got off the plane normally. it's a boeing 747 and it's designed to fly on just two engines over water. learning about two suspects

that are accused of stabbing a teenager and leaving her on the side of the road to buy. lizette andrea cuest arka has b found dead. >> reporter: deputies say that the two people responsible for this young woman's death were friends with her. they say that she willingly got into the car with them and now investigators are try to be find out what happened in that car and why. the parents of 19-year-old lizette photo of their daughter. she was found crawling on a road, authorities say she had been beaten and stabbed but managed to tell first responders who the suspects were before she died. which was critical to solving the case quickly. >> it was a compelling statement

about what happened to her this. to get to modesto in a timely manner and to be able to execute a search warrant at that house and probably find evidence that may have been discarded as time went on. though not revealing whether a weapon was found, a motive has yet to be determined. >> we'll be doing a lot of checking local area surveillance trying to backtrack basically the last 24 hours of lizette's life and the last 24 hours of movement by the suspects. >> cuesta lived with her father and graduated from silver creek high school in 2016. the east site union high school district released a statement saying we are in shock and disbelief regarding this tragic event. our thought and prayers go out to her family, friends and loved ones. both suspects are being held without bail at the santa rita

jail, they're expected to be arraigned in court tomorrow afternoon. reporting live in san leandro, abc7 news. coming up on abc7 news at 5:00, we'll hear from neighbors who saw the suspects being arrested and what we have learned about the two accused of stabbing that woman to death. the man acquitted in the shooting death of kate steinly pleaded not guilty to felony counts, he's facing two felony counts, one being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. his attorneys called the charges politically motivated and an effort by the trump administration to make an example out of him. >> the prosecution is vindictive, a sense that they're trying to override the verdict that was brought forward by the san francisco superior court jury. or not even override it, but they're going to essentially try to punish our client harsher than the san francisco superior court did. >> the defense lawyers say

they'll be asking the court to dismiss the charges as an illegal vindictive prosecution. he is due back in court on april 24. the family of a man shot and killed by a b.a.r.t. officer in january is demanding justice. celine tindle's family told us about police body camera video about that incident and it shows key facts about this case. here's the story from west oakland where dozens of protesters gathered this morning. >> he had his back turned. >> reporter: celine tindle's older brother has seen the body camera video that shows tindle being shot in the back by a b.a.r.t. officer. it happened on january 3. the b.a.r.t. officer heard a gunshot, when he went to investigator, he saw two men fighting.

the officer never identified himself before he shot her son. zbl >> when you're in the heat of a confrontation between two men and you say police, then it makes a difference. >> reporter: this weapon was recovered at the scene, but it's not clear who it belonged to. what is clear, according to the family is that tindle was not holding a gun when he was shot. at this rally, family and friends came together to demand that oakland police release the video. civil rights attorney john burr says he too has seen the video. >> the officer comes up, he says, show me your hands, show me your hands. and within moments, he starts shooting. and he shoots tindle in the back, bang, bang, bang. he could not have seen a weapon of any kind. >> reporter: today b.a.r.t. issued a statement to say that the b.a.r.t. police department is fully cooperating with opd, b.a.r.t. also said it would not release the video until after

why are we talking about this today? south bay assembly man introduced the bill into the general assembly today. that would make election day a state holiday. state employees would get a paid day off. public schools would be closed and companies would be encouraged to follow the state's lead. >> it's important that we get as much civic participation as possible and removing as many barriers to entry so that we can get a fully engaged electorate. >> i think it should be a state holiday because oa lot of peopl can't afford to take a day off to vote. >> in 2014, california saw historically low turnout, only 42% of registered voters took part in the general election. the most common reason given is -- california state law

they're not. they get that trust factor and then they start pulling money away from you. >> what kind of money are we talking about? >> the trend is trending up, since 2015, it's almost doubled and the problem is that this is a big business for scammers. it's about $1 billion with a b, that people have lost over the past three years, so it is a big business for them and we're estimating that there are about a million victims in the united states. >> is a scammer living next door or on another continent? >> it's worldwide, the united states is a big part of that. but part of our study shows that even in australia, part of the scam is that they will -- they lure you in with the heart, they take you financially and emotionally. so a lot of the victims threaten to commit suicide because it's emotionally devastating. >> it's heart breaking. >> in australia, they estimate

the presidio in san francisco is giving bird lovers a close up view of a pair of nesting red tail hawks. the hawk cam, the nest you see right here is 100 feet up in the blue gum eucalyptus trees. that is being kept a secret. the cameras will allow people to watch the hawks make a home and lay their eggs. you can see the youngsters younr and leave the nest. the warriors head coach last night against phoenix, the suns aren't very good, so there wasn't a whole lot of risk there. but the players draw plays during time-out. steph curry said he tried to drop a play and then forgot what he was supposed to run. some old school coaches criticized this saying it's disrespectful, it's just a

committee that he is confident that the administration followed the appropriate protocol in the porter case. >> afterwards we received requests for follow-up inquirely and we did the follow-up. and provided that informaion in november. and then we administratively closed the file in january. >> wray's timeline contradicts white house claims about porter's background check information and when administration officials were briefed on the investigation. white house press secretary sarah sanders also again defended the administration's version of events. the trump administration is proposing a major shake-up in what is commonly called the food stamps program. 80% of recipients would get half of their benefits in the form of what's being called a food package. a florida congresswoman is outraged by this proposal and

carolyn tyler is here with the story. >> reporter: the trump administration is comparing it's new plan to the high end delivery company blue apron. in california the food stamp benefits are put on an electronic card called ebt, retailers can accept them only for food and authorized products. now anyone receiving $90 a month or more would have that slashed in half and government food boxes would be handed out instead. >> it's very disappointing news, we feel that just because someone collects ebt or is on food stamps doesn't mean they shouldn't have choice in what they eat or what they buy. >> reporter: farmers markets where food stamps can be used to buy vegetables and fruits. there would be no fresh produce or meat in what the government

has dubbed harvest boxes, just nonperishables. congresswoman barbara lee said that as a single mother who relied on food stamps to help feed my boys, i can't overstate how offensive this proposal is. the agriculture department says it would say over $200 million over the next decade. >> the food stamp expenditure in a more effective way. >> the san francisco moran food bank feeds more than 1,000 people a month including those who run out of food stamps. >> we need to talk about how to make the snap program work better, with an ebt card, utilizing the private sector efficiencies and stop talking about how we tear it down. >> under the trump administration's plan, food stamp recipients would get to use half of their benefits for groceries. this would be the first major

overhaul in the five decade history of the nation's food stamp program. in the newsroom, carolyn tier, abc7 news. a climber injured after falling on oregon's mt. hootd has died. earlier today oregon national guard helicopter air lifted the climber who had fallen several hundred feet. officials say he died at the hospital. several other climbers are stranded on the mountain, several are hurt. meechantime the family of b paxon filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the hospital where he died. the lawsuit claims a surgeon performed an improper procedure at cedar sinai medical center resulting in his death.

the deadly flu epidemic has claimed more lives, the latest victims a 2-year-old girl and a man who refused to pay for tamiflu. >> in indiana, a family now second guessing their choice not to give their 2-year-old a flu shot. >> they had told us once the flu that's going around now, it's not going to matter if you get it or not. >> reporter: olivia tested positive for influenza a last week, she seemed to be making improvements but monday her parents found her dead. the 3-year-old is just one of the latest deaths in what is considered one of the deadliest flu seasons in decades. a schoolteacher, wife, mother of

known human womto get -- abbey beckley was diagnosed with a type of eye worm seen only in cattle. after experiencing some irritation in her left eye, she ended up removing a tiny worm and then she found another, and another, and the doctors were puzzled. the only thing they could tell her to do is just keep pulling the worms out. >> if we give her an ant anti-parasitic agent, they would die in there and not come out. >> it felt like i was living in a nightmare. >> how bizarre. the whole process took several weeks. beckley says she has been worm free, thankfully, ever since then. >> i can't even imagine, watching it is scary enough. >> it sounds like a magic trick, a bad magic trick.

device while driving, points are not added to your record. most people don't know that, but this new bill would make distracted driving a moving violation and adds points to your license. josh newman of fullerton introduced the bill. he says if you're making a choice to put your life and others' lives in danger by texting while driving, your driving record should reflect that. >> employees are speaking up about -- the and is called blind, it requires users to sign up with their company email address. the creators of the app say the posts are not linked back to the user. blind is becoming very popular with employers with tech companies like apple, google and uber. but lift began investigating,

with improper -- thousands of people who fell for a debt relief scam are going to get some of their money back. the federal trade commission is mailing out about 5,700 checks with an average refund of $87. the ftc says the company exaggerated how much money people could save and charged illegal up front fees. united debt counselors is now banned from making misrepresentations about financial products and making unsubstantiated claims about products. any company you go to help with debt relief, be really careful. and if they say it's easy, be really, really careful. another valentine's day, researchers say chocolate is not only a romantic gift but also has health benefits.
