>> reporte >> a horrible day indeed, new details are still coming in on today's mass shooting in florida. >> thank you for joining us. the suspected shooter has been identified as 19-year-old nikolaus cruz, here he is being led into the police station this afternoon. the broward county sheriff says that cruz killed at least 17 people, he blended in with students as they escaped but was eventual caught. >> we have a shooter in custody. he was taken into custody i believe about an hour after he left stonily douglas, after he committed this horrific, homicidal detectable act. >> a family member sells abc news that cruz was adopted. his mother died last year. and he was armed with an ar-15 automatic rifle.

>> reporter: gunshots forced students to flee. >> it's insane, it's unnecessary, it's out of the -- there's no words to describe how i feel right now. i was shaking, i was panicking, it was all out panic in that school. >> reporter: students running out with their hands up as emergency crews tended to the injuries on the ground. >> there are numerous fataliti s fatalities, it's a horrific situation. it's just a horrible day for us. >> reporter: the shots started shortly before the end of the school day, students say a fire alarm was pulled minutes before they heard the shots. >> we had a fire drill earlier, but when we heard the fire alarm again, we thought it was just another fire drill. >> a lot of kids were on their

phones, just trying to snapchat everything because they thought it was a joke and it wasn't. >> reporter: the president tweeting, my prayers and condolences to the victims of the terrible florida school shooting. no child or anyone should feel unsafe in an american school. >> as students trapped on campus documented this horror on social media. >> we just got new video in of the s.w.a.t. team evacuating a classroom. >> police. police. put your hands up. put your phones away. put your phones away. >> really whorrifying. >> from snapchat to twitter, students took to social media to let people know they were safe or simply to relay the horror of what was going on. hugs of relief, parents reuniting with her children who escaped the campus unharmed. the stream of police cars

rushing to the school, the helicopter called in for additional support and then a photo of a student hiding in a classroom, this caption, my school is being shot up and i am locked inside. one student captured the terrifying sounds of gunshots, a warning what you're about to hear is disturbing. >> [ bleep ]. [ gun fire ] . >> reporter: teachers herded students into closets. at first they thought this may have been a drill, the school had recently undergong training for these situations. >> we ran back inside to the classroom and got them down on the floor and then we moved into the closet. and we waited in the closet. >> that teacher went on to say that about 19 students were able to hide in the closet with her. they remained inside for about 40 minutes.

office. >> i get threats on a regular basis is, but this one was escalating was it was white powder and it seemed like more after a threat of violence. >> the call to recall judge aaron burr sky, the people who were responsibility for that letter said that since you are going to disrobe persky, i'm going to call you emily doe. emily doe is the survivor of the crime committed by turner. >> we're going to continue to stand with survivors of the sexual assault, we're going to continue to pursue the democratic process. >> reporter: stamford says the white powder was investigated by officials and was found to be harmless. the two suspects in the murder of 19-year-old lizzette cuesta made their appearance. live in dublin with what the

young victims yelled at the killers. >> reporter: the grieving father inside the courtroom in the front row during this brief hearing. all the bailiffs seemed focused on him. but it was the young woman sitting behind him with the family who jumped up and screamed expletives at melissa leonardo, including the phrase, you'll get what you deserve. it was a brief was emotional hearing, as three families touched by the murder of 19-year-old lizzette cuesta sat just feet from one another in a courtroom, each leaving without comment. 19-year-old daniel gross and 25-year-old melissa leon narards put off until thursday. we spoke with the father of lizzette cuesta outside their home. she was found crawling on the road early monday, she died a

few hours later, but not before identifying the people that allegedly attacked her. alameda county sheriff's investigators say lizzette was able to speak near the end, enough to provide detectives with two names. >> she never gave up. she brought herself justice and she made sure the people got caught. and now they have to pay for what they did. it won't bring her back, but at least they're not running around the streets. >> reporter: gross and leonardo have both been charged with murder, including the use of a knife by gross. both are expected bra eed back on thursday. a go fund me account has been set up to help lizette cuest arka family.
