woman, suspects making their first day in court. cuesta on the right was found crawling on testla road. she died just a few days later. laura anthony has the story in alameda. >> reporter: it was a brief but emotional hearing. three families touched by the murder of 19-year-old lizette cuesta. each left without talking to reporters. 19-year-old daniel gross and 25-year-old melissa leonardo was put off. >> no one is prepared for this. >> reporter: earlier we talked to lizette's father. she was found stabbed several times. she died a few hours later but

caught him behind a home near marin and carolina street. the statement says there was a struggle and the subject managed to forcibly take away a metal flashlight from the officer and arm himself with it. the officer fearing imminent and serious physical harm. fired at the suspect. >> he was unarmed and trying to get away. that doesn't mean you have a death sentence trying to evade arrest. >> reporter: the family promises this. >> your death is not in vain baby. we will get to the truth. >> reporter: the shooting itself is being investigated by vallejo police and the solano county district attorney. stay with us. we will continue to keep an eye on the deadly shooting in florida. ahead, we will dig through

the accused gunman is identified as 19-year-old nikolas cruz. a former student at the high school in broward county. 12 of the victims have been identified. and they said cruz was earlier expelled for disciplinary reasons. we now know what made ten san francisco middle school students sick yesterday. cannabis was the culprit. lyanne melendez has the story. >> reporter: parents said they had already spoken to their children about the incident. >> be careful, and not to eat anything that is, you know, that is not in a wrap. that is in a zip lock bag. to be careful. >> reporter: counselors were at james lick middle school after it was discovered that late yesterday ten students became sick after consuming cannabis.

ambulances called to the school and area cordoned off. >> i think it is a great opportunity for teachers and for families to talk to their young people about this particular subject. >> reporter: today we know that police are still investigating the matter and are not treating this as a criminal investigation. a container labeled medical cannabis was found and confiscated. what we don't know is who was described. one parent told abc7 news what the students ate was candy strips. >> i believe this could have happened in any school. >> reporter: as san francisco unified, substance abuse education starts as early as kindergarten and ramps up in middle school. and appears to be working.
