northbound 238, a crash to the right-hand side. traffic is slowed through castro valley and continues to be slow southbound 880 through hayward. at the live desk, we're tracking the developments in south florida following the shooting massacre at marjory stoneman douglas high school in parkland. 19-year-old nikolas cruz was booked into broward county jail a few hours ago. this was a mugshot released by the sheriff's office before the newscast began. cruz faces 17 counts of premeditated murder. a law enforcement official says the gun used by the shooter was an ar-15-style rifle and was apparently purchased legally by the suspect. at least 17 people were killed in the shooting. more than a dozen others injured. this morning, on "good morning america," george stephanopoulos talks with a students who says her teacher lost his life but saved hers. >> i'm so thankful that he was there to help everybody who did live in that classroom.

. the press democrat reports sonoma county and santa rosa are trying to make sure all properties burned in the weill fires are cleaned up by april 9th regardless of who is performing the work. contractors have cleared 62% of those sites putting the government effort on track to finish in the next two months. officials say about 1100 burned properties exist where owners opted to manage cleanup by hiring private contractors. let's talk about the drought monitor. just issued. want to compare the beginning of the rainy season, october 3rd to now. you can see it has spread dry, abnormally dry. the yellow over more than 80% of the state. part of that across the north bay and parts of that across the south bay. but the category 4 drought which is the second worst, that orange, is nonexistent. it's starting to spread out from southern california northward towards us. that's what we have to keep an

coming up on 6:15. the san francisco city attorney is demanding data relevant to an investigation about whether it and lyft are obeying state and local laws. last year, dennis herrera issued subpoenas to the two companies for information in categories including hours and miles logged by drivers and incentives. herrera says uber refused to disclose its annual report and has fought the city repeatedly. lyft is now cooperating with the request for the data. a former top aide to hilt's 2016 presidential campaign filed to run for governor of california. 43-year-old amanda renteria will be relatively unknown in a field well-known democrats. she has ties to prominent donors and politicians like former president obama and vice president joe biden. she serves as the chief operations director for the justice department. the most anticipated film of the year is much more than a movie. it's sort of a movement. >> black panther opens tonight.

most of us in the low to mid-60s today. tonight, temperatures fall back into the mid to upper 30s inland. one or two areas get to -- out to the coast and san francisco, the mild he's at 47 degrees. here's a look at tahoe this morning. i put together a four-day forecast to show you it's about 40 degrees today. so it's a little bit below average. it starts to get warm again friday and saturday with sunshine and then that arctic cold front i talked about which usually you don't -- usually doesn't carry much moisture is going to blow in sunday with snow showers and windy conditions. not going to be a great day to be there. as far as our seven-day forecast, look at that. we'll be near 70 saturday and then the front comes in and changes our weather sharply back into the mid to upper 50s with a blustery day monday and some freezing cold temperatures possible tuesday and wednesday mrning. we saw the snow frances. tell us about the conditions. >> yeah, mike. it's going to look good heading up there on the drive today.

westbound 80 ride through emeryville with the bay bridge plaza towards the foot of the maze. good morning. here at the live desk, i can tell you the 19-year-old man suspected in the deadly shooting at a south florida high school is now being questioned by authorities. nikolas cruz was booked into the broward county jail a short time ago. the sheriff's department releasing his mugshot overnight. cruz is accused of murdering 17 people and critically hurting five others. abc news reporter maggie rulli is live in parkland, florida, with the late thes morning. maggie? >> reporter: jessica, good morning. this is one of the deadliest mass shootings in recent u.s. history. now investigators here in parkland are questioning students trying to learn more about the suspect and his possible motive. overnight, suspected shooter, nikolas cruz was booked into the broward county jail as police searched his home looking for any clues as to why just hours

school here is closed through the rest of the week. the town has brought in grief counselors for students starting this morning. live from florida, maggie rulli, abc 7 news. in the last 30 minutes, we learned president trump will address the nation about the deadly school shooting. that will happen at 8:00 a.m. our time. abc news will have live coverage and we'll stream it on the abc 7 news app. in a new tweet the president said so many signs the florida shooter was mentally disturbed, even expelled for bad and erratic behavior. neighbors and classmates knew he was a big problem. must always report such instances to authorities again and again. it appears a hero during the shooting has died. according to the sun sentinel, aaron feis protected a student by jumping between her and the gunman and pushing the student out of the line of fire. feis was shot. at first there were conflicting reports about his condition. we did see a tweet this morning from the football team that said

feis' family was notified last night he had died. in addition to being an assistant coach, he worked as a security gand and took his role very seriously. this is the 18th school shooting in 45 days. authorities say the weapon used in the shooting was an ar-15 militar military-style rifle. they have been used in the mass shootings in las vegas, newtown, connecticut, aurora, colorado and san bernardino. the rifle became legal in the assault weapons ban lapsed in 2004. >> we've posted this on our facebook page with the caption sending love. if you'd like to share it with the victims in florida this morning. the couple accused of killing a 19-year-old leaving her to die on tesla road is going to be in court today. >> this after an emotional outburst from her grieving family yesterday. amy hollyfield is live in dublin. good morning, amy. >> reporter: natasha, a woman stood up in court and yelled at the female suspect "you'll get

what you deserve." a very tense court hearing. here is a look at the suspects due back in court today. 19-year-old daniel gross and 25-year-old melissa leonardo. prosecutors say the two are engaged. we've also heard that she is pregnant with their child. they also tell us they knew their victim. they believe that gross is the one who stabbed the victim. she is 19-year-old lizette cues cuesta. police have not released a motive but they all knew each other. she was found bleeding along livermore's tesla road where she was left for dead. investigators say before she died she named her killers. her family says they are devastated but her father also has a message for everyone who has reached out to them. >> want to thank everyone that showed support for me, my family, my daughter. it went from family members to total strangers. we appreciate that help. the love and support and other

and a hanavigation center sayin traumatize homeless people. jeff sheehey says the limit on staying at the centers ends up being disruptive to people who are homeless and when they're put back on the streets after 60 days, it leaves them more vulnerable. the director of the department says yes it is heartbreaking and difficult but homeless individuals can't stay in the sell shelters permanently. just 2,000 of the 21,000 people without housing are able to exit homelessness every year. >> i will pick up that story. the state lawmaker proposing to fix california's housing shortage by creating the new incentive for developers, the bill sponsored by the city of san diego would reward the construction of small and more affordable apartments within a short block of public transit. the legislation would allow develop tors to calculate the number of potential units based on square footage rather than units per acre. it would potentially allow them to mx mize space and build moreau knits. a state senator is on leave for sexual harassment

the increase for months to fund the president's infrastructure overhaul released on monday. the federal gas cents and hasn't been increased in 25 years. a review of company records show about 14,000 people were owed annuities, payments that they never received. an annuity is a fixed payment paid to someone every year, usually for the rest of their life. to make up for that mistake, met life is setting aside $510 million to finally make those payments. >> let's do a quick check of the big board this morning. we're up now about 205 at the new york stock exchange. tinder is taking a page out of a competing dating app's book. tinder is adding a feature to leave it up to women to decide whether they want to initiate a conversation with a match. that's similar to how bumble works. tinder says women will have a choice whether to activate that feature.
