live where you live, this is abc7 news. >> home is where the heart is, and yesterday my heart was broken. >> tears and togetherness for a small florida community reeling from tragedy. thousands united in grief, try to understand and to cope. good evening, i'm daschle. >> and i'm kristen sze in for al alma daetz. >> maggie ruhle where thousands gathered in solidarity tonight. maggie? >> reporter: dan and kristen, it's been one day since one of the worst mass shootings in modern history. the entire community of parkland is leaning on each other for support. >> this is our home and this is where we will not be intimidated by evil. >> reporter: a community in mourning, 17 lives lost, many of

them steteenage students. >> i can imagine going to biology class and not seeing her next to me. it's craze iz. >> reporter: she survived the attack. >> i'm in shock. an emotional wreck. i don't know how to take this and i'm just -- i'm thankful to be here, but at the same time i'm so hurt to know that a lot of people i know are gone. >> reporter: the alleged gunman now in custody, charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder. >> are you nicolas jacob cruz? >> yes, ma'am. >> reporter: nikolas cruz was expelled from his high school more than a year ago. he returned wednesday afternoon in an uber armed with an ar-15 rifle that according to records show was purchased legally. the rampage all over in a matter of minutes. according to authorities, cruz was found and arrested about an hour and a half later and has since told police he heard voices that told him to plan the attack. authorities are now combing

through his social media accounts. >> some of the things that come to mind are very, very disturbing. >> reporter: sources tell abc news this was his instagram account holding a pistol in another a large knife. a gofundme page has been set up for the victims' families and has already raised more than half a million dollar and it only continues to grow. in parkland, florida, maggie ruhle, abc news. dan and kristen? >> as reporters we don't talk about our own reflerkss, in this case we have to. what was it for you to see the community come together like that tonight? >> reporter: you know, kristen, as always with these mass shootings, especially at schools, the emotions are so raw. but to see the community come together, we talked about even those gofundme numbers of already raising that much money. it's been incredible. leaning on each other for support, this entire area was filled with thousands of people at the vigil last night all coming here, supporting one another, standing together in a

moment of silence. and it was so impactful to be hearing people sobbing in this area right here as the victims' names were read out loud. everyone has a personal connection it seems from the past day, day and a half, everyone knew someone that went to that high school so this impacting nearly everyone in the community. if you look behind me, you can see those 17 angels sort of a hunting reminder of what was lost. in addition to photographs of some of the victims, prom photos of some of the victims. it just hits home. these are kids' lives that were lost. >> absolutely. >> all right. moving night. maggie, thank you. >> well, here at home, high school students in one north bay community held a candle light vigil for the shooting victims tonight. >> but as abc7 news reporter lisa says, this was also a call for action in washington. ♪ ♪ hey now, hey now, it ain'tin'tit ♪ >> reporter: at the high school

tears were shed and candles lit for those in florida whose dreams were shattered wednesday. >> the second i heard, i started crying really hard. i literally was lost for words. >> reporter: and signs went up on campus. demands were made and stories and feelings were shared. sonia's close friend recently graduated from marjorie stoneman douglas high school in florida. >> i can only imagine if i heard next year she left, something happened here. >> reporter: she read from the friend apartments facebook palk where she wrote about her neighbor jaime guttenberg who was one of the dead. >> she'll never have a family, never dance again. >> reporter: with the sadness came outrage and a call for change. >> don't just sit back and mourn. take that pain and make a difference. >> reporter: many tamme high students vow to take action. they'll be writing cards to the victims in florida, starting fund-raisers and they'll also push school administrators to come up with a new emergency alert plan. in mill valley, abc7 news.

>> well, behind the political debate, there are real people suffering and heartbroken families. and tonight we are learning more about the 17 lives cut short. 14-year-old alex schachter won a state championship for playing the trombone in the school marching band last year. my heart is broken. that's what fred guttenberg wrote on facebook about his 14-year-old daughter jaime, trying to figure out how my family gets through this. 14-year-old alaina petty devoted countless hours of community service to the community. nicholas dworet had been recruited to swim at the university of indianapolis. those who knew 17-year-old joaquin oliver describe him as a very loving kid who would have done anything for his friends and family. 15-year-old luke hoyer, his family wrote, luke was a beautiful human being. 14-year-old gina montalto served on the school's color guard team. martin duque, he was also 14. his brother posted, words cannot

describe my pain. i know you're in a better place. those who loved 18-year-old meadow pollack described her as beautiful inside and out. 15-year-old peter wang is being remembered by family as funny, caring, and selfless. 16-year-old carmen schentrup was a national merit scholar semi finalist. helena ramsey, she was 17, her family describes her as brilliant and witty. 14-year-old cara loughran, a friend said we will always love you and celebrate your beautiful life. 49-year-old christopher hickson, the school's athletic director ran to the scene to help others to safety. 37-year-old aaron feis, he died shielding students from the shooter. another hero 35-year-old scott beigel, he died after unlocking the door and letting students into his classroom.

weekend. >> police officers will be on the campus of the high school in lafayette tomorrow after an air gun was found in a student's locker. after seeing the realistic gun, administrators intervened. he was removed from campus. both lafayette police and the school are investigating what was found. >> a middle school coach turned himself in on charges of child molestation and pornography. katie marzullo has the details. >> reporter: clifford was a long-time p.e. teacher and track and field coach in san jose until this september. that's when as the principal said in a statement, courageous students reportd suspicious behavior by the former employee and school and district administration acted immediately. san jose police say he was taking pictures of female students. investigators examined several of the coach's electronic devices and say they found numerous inappropriate images in his possession.

parents knew something was up when he left the school, but they're just now learning of his arrest. >> it is disappointing and certainly concerning here in our community and our neighborhood and our school. >> reporter: the coach is charged with seven counts of molesting and annoying a child and one count of possession of child pornography. in san jose, katie marzullo, abc7 news. >> the oakland dmv office is going to remain closed until march 5th because of flooding. water and ceiling tiles poured down last week after someone took copper piping from the roof. investigators priced the theft at about $50, but damage from the flooding is in the tens of thousands of dollars. crews are busy replacing the walls and the flooring. the dmv is still conducting the driving tests that have been scheduled. >> a lot of excitement tonight for movie rooted in oakland. that is more than just a block buster.

big. >> reporter: across the country and here in oakland, many screenings are raising money to send kids to see the movie. in oakland, kate larson, abc7 news. >> you can find a full video of director ryan kugler's surprise appearance on our website, abc7news.com. >> and abc7 news has learned new details about tuesday's united airlines flight from sfo to honolulu where parts of the engine broke off. ntsb officials said the engine suffered what is called a compressor stall and an engine surge. it resulted in outer panels of the engine sheering off and falling into the pacific. investigators spent today at the honolulu airport looking at the engine and the plane. the flight data recorders have been sent to washington for review. it landed safely with no injuries after that mishap. >> all right. still a little more of a chill in the air tonight. >> still nice. meteorologist sandhya patel is
