weekend. today is going to be one of the better days. monday, not a great day for outdoor activities. let's talk about what's going on right now. live doppler 7, it's bone dry outside and hardly a cloud from the east bay hills north. let's talk about the temperatures, 34 to 40. cooler this morning. by noon, already at average highs around 60. we'll be in the mid-60s at 4:00. except for the coast, 57. a little bit of a sea breeze. pretty smooth sailing here. how about on the roads, sue? >> a nice slow friday morning. that's how we like it in the traffic center. at the 880 overcrossing. headlights are headed in the northbound direction. everybody is moving at the limit here. across town to 280, that's underneath the 17/880 overcrossing, very light traffic in the northbound direction. looking at an 8-minute drive from san jose to cupertino. >> developing news, we're

learning that the alleged high school shooter had a struggle with mental illness and history of violence. >> nikolas cruz told investigators he heard voices telling him to conduct the attack. the 19-year-old confessed to the killings after being taken into custody. authorities describe the mind of the suspect as warped and possibly demented. >> he shot the chickens across. he shot the chickens across in the back there. >> he like cornered a squirrel. was throwing rocks at it, trying to kill it. >> abc news learned the fbi learned a tip on social media about a possible shooting. the agency says it did not have enough information at the time. it was a difficult day as we learned the identities of the 17 victims. their ages range from 14 to 49 years old. >> as new details emerge about the shooter and the political debate continues, we want to pay tribute to those who lost their lives. dan ashley tells us more about

15-year-old peter wang is remembered by family at funny, caring and selfless. 16-year-old carpal men. schentrup was a national merit scholarship finalist. helena rams a, she's described as brilliant and witty. 14-year-old cara loughran. a friend said we will always love you and celebrate your life. christopher hixon, he ran to the scene to help others. 37-year-old aaron feis. the assistant football coach, he shielded students from the shooter. another hero. scott beigel. he died after unlocking the door and letting students into his classroom. >> alyssa's family wrote, honor alyssa by doing something fabulous in your life. inspire for greatness and never give up. >> thousands of people gathered

last night for a candlelight vigil in parkland, florida, to remember those victims. >> look around and see your family members and come together as a family because that's how we're going to get through this. and we are going to get through this. i'm here to show our strength and ability to rebound. this is our home. this is where we will not be intimidated by evil. >> our kids are amazing. our eagles will soar and we are parkland proud. >> this is just one of a dozen or so tributes planned in response to the tragedy. >> here at home, high school students in one north bay community are planning a march today after holding a candlelight vigil for the shooting victims last night. abc 7 news was in mill valley where community members and students at tamalpais high school vowed to take action. they'll be writing cards to victims, starting fundraisers and also push administrators to come up with a new emergency alert plan. >> don't sit back and mourn.

abc7news.com. a long-time p.e. teacher and track and field coach at willow glenn middle school in san jose has turned himself in on charges of child molestation and child pornography. the students reported he was behaving suspiciously. san jose police say he was taking pictures of female students. investigators examine several of the coaches' electronic devices and found numerous inappropriate images in his possession. >> it is disappointing. it's certainly concerning here in our community and our neighborhood and our school. >> papadakis is charged with 7 counts of child molestation and one count of possession of child pornography. the butte fire in 2015 burned over 70,000 acres, destroyed 921 buildings. state officials found that the fire was started when a pine tree leaned into a pg&e power

line. earlier this week, the board of supervisors there agreed to file a lawsuit against the utility. in response, pg&e expends thoughts and prayers to fire victims. ayesha curry is opening up about her struggles with her third pregnancy. the past four months have not been easy. she read about this in her lifestyle blog. she's suffering from a severe form of morning sickness. she says she's barely been able to eat, let alone cook. she says her husband, stephan curry has been an angel through all of this. she says always willing to lend a helping hand. the curry's baby will join big sisters riley and ryan. state lawmakers want to protect renters against evictions. one bill would extend the period of time that tenants have to respond to eviction lawsuits so they can present a legitimate defense. another would extend just cause

rampage in parkland, pa fla fla. the 19-year-old charged with killing 17 people has confessed. shortly after arriving at marjory stoneman douglas high school by uber, nikolas cruz began to methodically fire an ar-15 assault rifle concealed in a bag. he admitted that he stashed the gun to blend into the crowd and then walked out of the school. he escaped to a walmart and bought a drink at a subway and walked to a mcdonald's. an officer later arrest ds him after recognizing him from a description. an emotional tribute overnight for the victims of the florida massacre after disturbing details emerge about the suspect's past. >> thousands gathered for a candlelight vigil in parkland to remember the 17 people killed by a shooter who said he was hearing voices. stephanie ramos has the latest. >> reporter: good morning. since we've been here, we've spoken to many people who feel

emotional, angry, in shock. most of all, they're trying to find strength from somewhere, from anywhere after one of the deadliest school shootings in the u.s. took place here in their town. overnight, thousands of people coming together in disbelief and grief. >> the rest of my days, this will always be engraved in my mind. i don't think it will go away. >> the names of the victims were read out loud. >> some in the crowd chanting, no more guns. over the cries of friends and family. many of the victims, teenage students. one in the school's marching band, another on his way to college on a swim scholarship. some just in their first year of high school. >> just knowing that his seat won't be filled next time i enter that class is just heart-wrenching.

>> for the survivors, the moments that were almost their last replaying over and over in their minds. >> i was scared that i was going to be next. i didn't know what else to do. i just kind of froze. >> lexi tells us, the shooter opened fire in her classroom. not everyone survived. >> i'm thankful to be here. but at the same time, i'm so hurt to know that a lot of people i know are gone. >> police say the gunman confessed to the shooting rampage telling them he heard voices directing him to carry out the attack. >> some of the things that come to mind are very disturbing. >> sources tell abc news, this is his instagram account. he's seen holding a pistol and a large knife in another. authorities digging deeper into the suspect's pastment as for the man who told the authorities about a threat that the suspected gunman posted to youtube saying he wanted to shoot up a school. that tipster says he spoke with the fbi last year and also reported that threat to youtube. the fbi now says they are

looking into it. reporting in parkland, florida, stephanie ramos, abc 7 news. it's obviously a sensitive time for students and teachers across the country, including here in the bay area. police will be at a laugh yaet campus because of a scare there. >> another school will be training for an active shooter situation. amy hollyfield is live in lafayette. good morning, amy. >> hi, natasha. we're at acalanes high school. this created quite a scare. one student has been removed from the campus. now, let's move over to oakland where teachers are going to be going through active shooter training. it's going to look something like this. this is video of training that was done at the napa community college. about 100 teachers in oakland have gone through the training. but more will complete the course today. not just teachers need to be

prepared. a family therapist says parents need to talk to their kids about this. but advises parents that they need to calm their own fears before approaching their kids. >> don't lead them. you may be transferring your own fears and anxieties that they don't have right now on to them. >> reporter: here is a picture of what an air soft gun looks like. this is not the one they found in lafayette. but you can see from this picture how realistic these guns look. they shoot round pellets. they cannot kill someone. students are the ones who reported seeing the gun in the student's locker and administrators moved in. police will be here on campus at acalanes high school today. amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> amy, thank you. president trump plans to travel to parkland, florida to meet with families and local officials. a date has not been set yet. the president promised to tackle school safety and mental health issues in response to the shooting during an address to

the nation yesterday. he actually made no mention of gun violence. the president's budget proposal would slash medicaid, the major source of federal funding for treating mental health problems. it would cut school safety programs by more than a third. by the way, if you'd like to help, a go fund me page has been established for the victims of the shooting. it's raised more than $680,000 of the $750,000 goal. it's jumped $30,000 just in the last hour. we've put a link on our website, abc7news.com. firefighters quickly pout u. put out a fire burning in a victorian late last night. when crews got to the house on brook street after 11:00 p.m. heavy smoke was billowing out of the windows. the early investigation suggested it started outside of the house and moved indoors. no one was found inside of the house and the cause remains under investigation. they ask to plan the u.s.

supreme court to review a ruling in the shooting death by a sheriff's deputy of a 13-year-old. they upheld a district court's ruling rejecting that the deputy was justified when he shot the 13-year-old. lopez was holding a bb pellet rifle that resembled an ak-47. family has lawsuits against the deputy. in memory of kelly zachary, she was on her way to work eight days ago when her car collided with a bus at ashby avenue and california street. then it went into a house. she died at the scene. friends and family of hers gathered at a home to pay respects. berkeley police say she may have run a stop sign. all right. that cooler weather we talked about, there it is. everywhere except for concord, novato and hayward. at least 2 to 11 degrees cooler. let's look at the neighborhood temperatures. ukiah, santa rosa, 33 degrees.

valleys, see the temperature jump from 42 to 63 to upper 60s from 2:00 to 4:00. still, about 53 degrees by 8:00. we'll talk about at that dramatic drop in the temperatures as winter comes back to the forecast this weekend. i'll see you in a few minutes with that. let's see what sue is watching. >> the bay bridge toll plaza, it's very light this morning. a lot of folks might have a four-day weekend going on here. metering lights are on. you can tell that it's hardly backed up at all. i just looked up at the live shot of our san mateo bridge and it is bumper to bumper with brake lights going on. we do have a motorcycle down. chp just reporting in the left lane about halfway across the flat section, so that's why it's just bumper to bumper across the span. may want to avoid it at this hour and take the dunbarton bridge until they can get that motorcycle up and out. apparently the motorcycle is laying on its side. the rider, though is okay fortunate fortunately. we'll have to get emergency crews through that. we'll be following this next

little while. yep. >> thank you, sue. ac 7 news learned new details about the united airlines flight from sfo to honolulu where parts of the engine broke off. who could forget this image. it suffered an engine surge and compression stall. it resulted in outer panels of the engine shearing off and falling into the pacific. investigators spent yesterday at the honolulu airport looking at the engine and the plane. the flight data recorders have been sent to washington, d.c. for review. the united flight landed safely with no injuries. the oakland dmv office will remain closed for two more weeks due to flooding. water and ceiling tires poured down after someone stole copper piping from the roof. it was only worth about 50 bucks. but the damage from the flooding is in the tens of thousands. crews are busy replacing the walls and the floor. the dmv is still conducting driving tests that have been scheduled. a stunning discovery in new york as officials say they have
