good morning bay area. let's get sprint cup get going. >> this is abc7 mornings. it's saturday, february 17th. good morning, and thanks so much for being with us. i'm chris nguyen. let's start with a first look at the forecast. here's meteorologist lisa argen, she's tracking live doppler 7 for us. hi lisa. >> hi chris. good morning to you. no clouds to speak of but we will be looking at some change, maybe even tracking precip by the end of the weekend. as we look outside, santa cruz, 41 degrees. upper 60s today a. beautiful afternoon. 49 in the city. 47 in san jose. oakland checking in at 44. on the coast you are out of the 30s. 41 degrees out in sierra nevada. it is cold but boy is it going to get a lot colder in the mountains and around here beginning tomorrow. so, today we will be in the mid 60s inland by noontime. upper 50s at the coast. the last day today of warmth,

with highs well above average. then tonight a cold front moves through the bay area. we will track the possibility of a few showers and talk about many frosty mornings ahead. a person of interest is in custody this morning in connection to a double shooting and carjacking near golden gate park. one person died and another has life threatening injuries after last night's shooting. this modern police located the stolen toyota on alameda street near derks eharo street. it was behind an rv. several people exited the rv but the person of interest stayed behind. after more than an hour of negotiations the suspect surrend surrendered. >> reporter: a 28-year-old man is dead. gunshots wounds following a shooting in the panhandle of golden gate park. >> at this time, this is preliminary information.

and what we have is that there was some type of argument that ensued between a group of people. >> reporter: police say the argument and shooting happened here in the panhandle and the suspect ran north and carjacked the getaway vehicle. the drive is okay. police say they don't know yet if the victims and suspect knew each other. people who frequent the park say it's not uncommon to see a group gathering near stannion and oak streets. >> that part right there has concrete. so it's like a grotto in the trees. there are often people there, often homeless people, you know, just kind of hanging out. >> reporter: investigators have not identified either victim nor confirm if the men are part of the homeless population who live in the area. in san francisco, katie utehs, abc7 news. this morning, some residents in san francisco's richmond district lost water is following a water main break. water gushed from under a phi drant on the great highway near balboa street. it burst at aren't 3:00 this

morning but officials were able to shut off the water and stop the flooding. to the school shooting in parkland, florida. the fbi admits it received a specific tip saying the alleged shooter nikolas cruz had access to guns and the desire to kill and the agency failed to act. adrian bankerts that latest on the information. >> the job they have done and i want to congratulate you all. >> reporter: president trump and the first lady thank doctors and nurses coming to the bedside of injured victims of wednesday's high school massacre. >> very sad something like that could happen. >> reporter: sad and terrifying. after nikolas cruz'sallied measuresous rampage he jogged off campus and is seen walking into a mcdonald in this video minutes after the shooting right before the 19-year-old was arrested. outrage over the brazen killings magnified by the explosive fbi confession of a huge mistake.

governor rick scott wants the fbi direct ar to resign after the bureau admits that on january 5th a person close to cruz called the fbi's public access tip line concerned about cruz's desire to kill, erratic behavior, and the potential of him conducting a school shooting. but according to the fbi, the information was never forwarded to the fbi in miami field office and no further investigation was made. >> on behalf of myself and over 1,000 employees of the miami field office, we truly regret any additional pain that this has caused. >> they had the name of the person, nikolas cruz. and they had the witness who was reporting it. so they would have been able to act on this information immediately. but they didn't. >> reporter: the attorney general ordering a review of what went wrong. >> it's terrible. and now we have to live with our good friends dead and it could have possibly been stopped if the fbi did something about it. >> reporter: this would be the

most recent warning. in september a video blogger contacted the fbi when a user with the name nikolas cruz posted i'm going to be a professional school shooter. nibs lass cruz is reportedly ready to plead guilty to avoid the death penalty. this recent school shooting has put the spotlight on how agencies handle tips about the public. not only did the fbi receive warnings months in advance, there were a history of disturbances at the home where he lived. >> on behalf of myself and over 1,000 employees of the people maeld office we truly regret any additional pain this caused. >> reporter: a stunning admission over the mishandling of two i don't have looked tips

regarding nikolas cruz. social media posts showed his obsession with violence and how he wanted to be a professional school shooter. all of this six weeks before 14 students and three staff members were gunned town. ab 7 news spoke with former fbi agent rik smith. >> they are supposed to disseminate that to a field office, miami in this instance. they decide to do a back beyond, contact the school, interview the suspect and hopefully neutralize this. >> reporter: also troubling the amount of times the sheriff's office was called out to cruz's home. deputies were dispatched over 20 times in recent years. >> every one of these calls for service will be looked at and scrutinized. >> reporter: congresswoman jackie spears says this is a prime example of how different agencies on state and federal level but learn to work together. >> i think that kind of multiagency evident and coordination and communication is going to be key as we move forward. >> reporter: how that will happen, all parties agree, is

yet to be determined n. san francisco, dion lim, abc7 news. gun control is up for debate once again after the florida shooting. senator diane feinstein says she will introduce a bill raising the minimum age for purchasing an assault weapon. she says the law currently allows people to sell ar-15s to anyone over 18. her bill would stop gun tealers from selling any type of firearm to people under 21. this is not the first time feinstein has introduced gun control legislation. of a the las vegas shooting two of her bills banning butch stocks and magazines stalled in committee. you can make a difference for the victims and the families in florida. this go fund me page has raised more unanimous $1 million in just two days. we posted the link on our website, abc7news.com. time now is 8:07. a powerful earthquake shook mexico last night causing damage but no known deaths. the magnitude 7.2 earthquake hit the state of oaxaca in

southeastern mexico. this video shows light fixtures rocking hundreds of miles away from the epicenter. nearly a 1 mm homes and businesses lost power. some people on twittered reported they felt the in los angeles. last september two earthquakes killed more than 450 people in mexico. at long last a major road in the santa cruz mountains is back to to lanes of traffic. we are talking about valencia road in aptos year valencia elementary school. it was compromised during last winter's destructive rains and had to be closed all but cutting to have community. abc7 news reporter katie marzullo has the story. >> we couldn't go to work. we couldn't get the kids to olhosc lives in rolling green estates off valencia road a road that's been closed or reduced to one lane since last winter's storms. locals were forced on to a

49ers player dana stubblefield. a judge has reinstated his bail in a rey rape case set at $500,000. according to our media partner the mercury news stubble fooel's attorney argued the alleged rape victim lied under oath when she deny ever working in the porn industry. stubblefield was arrested for

you can catch more of his live reports throughout the weekend. all right. take a look at this. what exactly is that? sky 7 was flying over alameda yesterday morning when the pilot asked that very same question after he spotted what looks like a rocket. we wanted to find out what it was and why it was here. jonathan blume got the answers. >> reporter: they are being awfully quiet about it. quieter than us. >> what were the helicopters all about this morning. >> reporter: it was our helicopter. >> nice work. it was a beautiful helicopter. >> reporter: the folks at st. george spirits had no idea that just across the fence a stilly start-up was testing a rocket. >> shouldn't they do that in the desert. >> reporter: indeed it's unexpected. >> when i look behind me i see a giant truck with a missile on it. ar:ep t the>> alameda naval air station and headed to a building the navy once used to test jet engines. we caught up it and learned it plngs to a start-up that doesn't have a name yet.

with lisa argen. >> hi everyone. saturday morning. waking up to all that glorious sunshine. if you want some changes, well changes are ahead. we just lost this camera. sorry about that. 49 in san francisco, 44 in gilroy. 45 in half moon bay. mountain view at 46. you can see it's going to be a nice day today, with mid 60s. once again highs warmer than average. only 38 by the delta right now. 39 in livermore. the wind are calm. the atmosphere is just ticking up a little bit in terms of moist. so overall, even though we have these 30s it is slightly warmer. and in the sierra nevada it's in the 20s right now. highs the next couple of days, we will be lucky to make it into the 20s. and just a little snow is on the way sunday into monday. we are looking at sunny and mild conditions today. cooler and winnier tomorrow. looking at low snow levels locally about 1500 feet as a quick-moving system will bring in some moisture sunday night into month we will get to that in a moment.

freezing cold mornings with chilly days monday tuesday and wednesday. but the mildest day by far. one of the warmer readings will be in the 70s for the south bay. san jose, average high is 62. look what happens tomorrow, and then into monday and tuesday. slowly, we will recover by the middle of the week. here's tomorrow with the partly cloudy. chilly conditions. lower snow levels. and here comes the moisture. it's late sunday into monday. 11:30 you can see some green here. and also the pink and the white. but notice, it's offshore. but as we get further to the south around santa cruz, they could see some accumulating snow. the wind that accompanies that strong cold front with northwesterly wins blowing to 35 miles an hour by the afternoon. and then they just get stronger. you you can see the contour here with the colors. the oranges, 35 to 40-mile-an-hour wind. maybe even 45-mile-an-hour win gusts throughout the day on sunday. morning lows, waking up monday

65 in mountain view. and by 5:00 in the afternoon, still mild. increasing clouds. that cold front bringing in the coldest air we've seen in years with frosty mornings and very chilly afternoons. maybe a sprinkle or two. we will detail that for you coming up. lisa, thanks. the special counsel has indicted 13 russian nationals for launching an elaborate scream to meddle in the u.s. elections and undermine the american political process. the president sounding off, claiming this vindicates him. abc news reporter kenneth emojiin is in florida, where the first family is spending the weekend. >> reporter: this morning democrats are demanding president trump respond to what some are calling an agent of war by russia. the deputy attorney general announced special counsel robert mueller has charged 13 russian nationals with meddling in the 2016 presidential election. come of them accused with operating right inside the u.s. pretending to be americans.

the indictment clear. the goal in 2016 was quote, disparaging hillary clinton and supporting the presidential campaign of then candidate donald j. trump. >> the defendants allegedly conducted what they called information warfare against the united states. >> reporter: the alleged leader, a russian oligarch prigozhin. the operation started in 2014. russian operatives allegedly >> with the stated goal of spreading distrust towards the candidates and the political system in general. >> reporter: investigators say the russians created hundreds of fake social media accounts to spread fake news and tricked real american voters into joining real political groups like secured borders and heart of texas. they even unwitting individuals associated with the the trump campaign. >> there is no allegation in this indictment that any

american was a knowing participant in this illegal active. >> reporter: president trump seized to than comment tweeting the trump campaign did nothing wrong. no collusion. >> there has been no collusion between us and the russians. there was absolutely no collusion. there is absolutely no collusion. >> reporter: trump has called the russia investigation a witch-hunt, fake news, a hoax. >> do you see these 13 indictments as vindication for you? >> we absolutely do. >> reporter: but top democrats also looking into russia election meddling point out the special counsel's investigation is not over. >> just because this indictment has no mention of collusion or of knowing participation by americans doesn't mean it isn't going to happen in the next indictment. >> reporter: in a white house statement president trump said americans must unite to protect the integrity of our democracy and our elections. despite a law giving him more power to hit russia with tougher sanctions the president has held off, his administration saying the threat is deterrence enough.

west palm beach, florida. now to the new report of an alleged affair between a playboy play nate and donald trump before he was elected president. the report in "the new yorker" allegedly involves money spent just before the election for her story, which was never published. abc's senior white house correspondent cecilia vega has more. >> reporter: at the white house pan abrupt change of plans. president trump bound for florida, boarding marine one alone. the first lady wasz was supposed to be with him. instead, she left separately and met him at air force one. it comes as the president faces explosive new allegations about a nine month affair with a playboy playmate and new questions whether she was paid to stay silent days before the presidential election. "the new yorker" reports mr. trump met the woman mcdougal in 2006 at the employ bay mansion when he was taping an episode of the apprentice. >> come over.

it. >> reporter: the report claims the affair happened around the same time mr. trump allegedly became involved with adult film actress stormy daniels. this week the president's long time personal attorney acknowledges he paid her $130,000 just before the election. he says the president's business nor his campaign was part of the transaction. he has not said whether the president knew about that payment. daniels staying mum. >> do you have a non-disclosure agreement? >> do i? >> in florida, the president and first lady walked off air force one together. cecilia vega, abc news, the te lawmaker suspended due to a sexual misconduct allegation is suing the legislature for reinstatement arguing he is being treated differently than a white colleague. the suit, by state senator tony mendoza who is latino, claims while he was suspended for the a gags against him, state senator bob hertzberg work is white was not asked to step aside despite misconduct allegations against him.

mendoza was suspended last month after being accused of harassing three female staffers and firing one them. hertzburg is reported of making at least three female colleagues uncomfortable with hugs. sam ricardo will lead by example and help clean up the city. he is hosting a trash pick up event in mount pleasant. it's part of his beautify sj campaign. this is video from last year's cleanup. san jose has seen an increase in illegal dumping in recent years. the mayor promised to clean up the city. later today, thousands of people will strip down to their underwear in san francisco all in the name of charity. it's the annual cupid's undery run. this year the goal is to raise nearly $60,000 toward research on why tumors grow on nerves throughout the body, a genetic disorder that affects one in 3,000 children. san francisco is one of 30 cities taking part.

happening today, the ultimate competition where sports meets advertising. five people from the bay area will compete in the world's sign spinning championships. it's not as easy as it looks. professional sign spinners break dance and twirl signs and keep up the energy. 100 sign spinners from 11 countries will compete today in investigation. last year a sign spinner from san francisco won the championship title and a $5,000 prize. this weekend is expected to be one of the coldest of the year. so don't forget bure pets. animal officials inon ctra county say you should bring them inside at night. if you are going to keep them outside, they say you should make sure they have good bedding and access to food and water. and one more thing, don't let a heavy fur coat fool you. >> the fact that it has fur doesn't mean it's exempt from the impacts of cold weather.
