kgo. a crisp and cold morning in san francisco this president's day. pretty picture of the golden gate bridge but cold temperatures are yet to come. thanks for joining us. with potentially record low temperatures coming our way, let's get the latest now from abs 7 meteorologist mike nicco. >> hi, everybody. let's set the table and show you the gusty breezes. still gusting 28 at the host. you can see 10 to 15 just about everywhere else. what it's done to our

temperatures, it's dropped us een colder than yesterday. we're about 5 to 11 degrees behind yesterday's level and that puts us in 40s to barely 50. what happens tonight when the wind comes and all that dry air, arctic air hangs around. everybody but san francisco needs to be worried about, as you said, the pets, plants and pipe. the light blue is frost advis y advisory. temperatures will get around 30, 32 degrees. the darker blue, that's where you have to really protect everything because we could drop town to 25 degrees. i'll show you the numbers for your neighborhood and who the records may visit. >> mike, thank you. bay area residents not accustomed to this type of frigid weather are trying to adjust while still partaking in their favorite recreational activities on this holiday. matt keller is live in the santa cruz mountains. it's got to be really cold up there this morning. i see you have your headwear on.

>> yes, i do. this isn't that unusual for winter but it's been to cold, i think these temperatures caught a lot of people offguard. john from saratoga found out while cycling on skyline boulevard. is is there a time where you're like, it's too cold to go out for a bike reside? >> today. >> reporter: the temperatures dropped into the 30s. there was a threat of snow showers but the window closed when a winter weather advisory canceled. the sun's out. but it's not warm. >> it's not warm enough yet. maybe in the afternoon. >> reporter: we drove highway 9 from scotts valley into saratoga. no snow yet? >> no snow. >> reporter: no snow but the scenery was beautiful. frosty conditions in some spots. the cold weather made for an interesting camping trip for nicky and yulia. >> perhaps we didn't look at the weather as closely as we should have, but it turned out to be this magical adventure.

and share it on social media using #abc7now. we might use it on air or on abc7news.com. fire broke out at a condo complex that burned yesterday injuring a firefighter. residents are describing their harrowing escape when flames broke out due to a stove fire. abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live at the scene on east gate lane. >> reporter: we met with fire victims this morning who told us about residents going door to door, knocking on doors, waking everyone up, helping everyone get out safely. they did. you can see the fire did a lot of damage. everyone made it out okay. only to get a call that the homes were on fire again. residents who escaped a huge fire yesterday rushed back this morning to check on their homes again after they heard there was another fire. less than 24 hours later. >> i was kind of freaking out this morning. we thought everything was okay. so, i was like, oh, man,

hopefully it didn't get damaged this time. >> reporter: firefighters say there was a flareup at 1:25 this morning at this martinez condo complex on east gate lane. they got it out in about 20 minutes and kept it to the attic space of a building that had already burned in the original fire. >> i get over here and look and go, there was a roof there when we left yesterday. so, it happens, right? it was really windy last night. >> reporter: the first fire started sunday at 4:15 in the morning. you can see from this helmet camera from firefighters how big and aggressive it was inside. investigators say it started because someone left a pot on a akitchen stove. five of the eight units in the building were damaged. >> as you walk in, it looks kind of like a mudslide came through. a lot of ash and sheetrock and water. just stinky smoke smell everywhere. >> reporter: even units without fire damage still aren't habitable. >> we could live there in a few weeks, they said, when on you power gets turned on and the smell goes away, but i'm pregnant right now so we can't

really be there. >> reporter: everyone got out okay. no residents were hurt. >> that's the most important thing. making sure everybody gets out safe. at the end of the day, this is just stuff. insurance can replace this stuff but we can't replace people. >> reporter: one firefighter was hurt. he had an injury to his extremity. that's as descriptive as the fire marshal says he can get. he did tell us that firefighter is going to be okay. live in martinez, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> thank you new oakland has reportedly run out of money for its fire prevention program. according to "the chronicle," the lack of funding is partly because voters rejected the renewal of a $65 parcel parcel the city has allocated about $60,000 but that money will not be released until july. some members want the money to be released early. if you felt a little shaking this morning, you weren't dreaming. magnitude 2.9 earthquake hit the

east bay around midnight. it was centered near monta vista high school in danville. a 2.5 quake hit the same area about an hour later. there is no reported damage, as you might expect, from a quake that size. the teen charged in the deadly florida school shooting rampage was back in court this morning. nikolas cruz was brought into a ft. lauderdale court in shackles over an hour ago. his defense team had petitioned the judge to allow cruz to miss this hearing but their motion was denied. meantime, we're getting a new glimpse of cruz before the shooting. this is new video of cruz fighting with classmates. that's him in the white shirt in a brawl with several students last year. the 19-year-old is pictured here at his mother's funeral. a student who knew cruz said he likely waited for valentine's day to carry out his plan. >> love was something nick never really understood. if you look at valentine's day might have been a trigger as to why that day was the day he chose to do this.

>> this morning cruz has invoked his right to remain silent. he's being held in solitary confinement and on suicide watch. jessica castro joins us with an abc7 news exclusive with the family that took in nikolas cruz. >> the family that took in nik cruz say they are devastated by what happened. cruz also told them he was sorry after the shooting. kimberly and james snead spoke on "good morning america" this morning. they say they've seen cruz once since the shooting, briefly at the police station. the snead's son was friends with cruz that's why they took him in after his mother's death. they said he was polite, followed the rules. >> you were aware he had weapons when he moved into your home? >> absolutely. >> where were they kept? >> one of the stipulations is he had to get a gun safe. we got a gun safe on the way

back from lantana from moving his stuff to our house. >> he didn't have free access to the gun safe? >> no. i thought i had the only key to the gun safe. >> the sneads say this isn't the person they knew when he lived with them, the couple says they do not have plans to see the alleged gunman behind bars any time soon. i'm jessica castro, abc7 news. >> thank you. the white house announced this morning that the president is open to tougher background checks for gun purchases. in is the first time since the florida school shooting that he's addressed gun violence in any way. as abc news explains, this comes after student survivors with public cries for change. >> reporter: president trump said he skipped golf this weekend out of respect for the victims of the florida school shooting. but angered them with his flurry of venting tweets from his mar-a-lago resort on saturday, he accused the fbi of being too distracted by i by the russian investigation to follow up on a

tweet. very sad that the fbi missed all the many signals sent out by the florida school shooter. this is not acceptable. they are spending too much time trying to prove russian collusion with the trump campaign. this is not acceptable. a student responded, oh, my god, 17 of my classmates and friends are gone and you have the audacity to make this about russia. have a damn heart. >> the president should be staying out of law enforcement business. >> reporter: friday the president visited the hospitalized victims but made no mention of them, many of whom turned their pain into activism. >> we feel neglected president appe. you're either with us or against us. >> reporter: they announced a march on washington on march 24th. teens laid in front of the white house for three minutes to represent the time it took for the shooter to buy the ar-15. tomorrow about 100 students will head to florida's capital, taking their message for change in gun laws to state lawmakers.

on wednesday president trump will hold a listening session with students and teachers. he'll also speak with local and state officials about school safety. abc news, washington. former employee of a southern california assemblywoman accused of sexual harassment has filed a complaint with the state. the former staffer says assemblywoman christina garcia fired him after he refused to play spin the bottle with her. in his complaint, j. david kernik says she was to workers. they are already investigating claims she drunkenly groped a staff member. we knew it was going to be big, but how big was it? the record-breaking numbers from the new marvel movie "black panther," and kfc is having a big problem that's ruffling a lot of feathers. the reason two-thirds of its restaurants are shut down today

"peter rabbit" and "50 shades freed" came in with about $17 million each.

hundreds of kfc restaurants in the united kingdom are closed because of a chicken shortage. the fast food chain says it's having issues with a new delivery partner. only about 300 of kfc's 9s 00 uk locations are open today. kfc says that's because it didn't want to compromise quality. kfc-uk and ireland said the chicken crossed the road, just not to our restaurants and the colonel is working on it. an interesting new study out this morning linking certain pregnancies to overweight babies. that's fergie you're looking at right there. let's take you outside to santa cruz for a live look at the beach. gorgeous and sunny. but very cold. meteorologist mike nicco has today's accuweather forecast

it's not often we get to talk about record cold temperatures but that is what is coming our way tonight, possibly tomorrow night. here's one of the areas. open the weather window on walnut creek. that will see temperatures more likely around 29 degrees tonight. we're looking south into san ramone valley. that will definitely be freezing cold. you can see a few clouds out there. mostly sunny today. as we get a little more sunshine, a little more warmth, isolated shower is still possible this afternoon. snow levels still around 2,000, maybe 2,500 feet. freezing cold tonight. my accuweather highlights, we could do this two more times before the end of the week. here's a look at the temperatures today. mainly 50 to 55 degrees.

that's what the thermometer is going to say. the breeze out there is going to make it feel 5 to 8 degrees cooler. a look from sutro tower. my accuweather planner shows 44 to 50 degrees by noon. we're still 10 degrees below average. notice at 8:00, winds start to taper, temperatures drop into the mid to lower 40s. tonight is when the freezing will start to take over, especially our inland valley. i put asterisks on the low map. look at them all. potential record lows. 30 in redwood city. san francisco, record low is 38 tonight. will be close. record low in oakland is about 34. record low is 32 in san rafael. richmond, 36. san s santa rosa, 26. with this cold air mass, it's still cranking out high elevation air mass.

over the ocean where the temperatures are warmer than over the land, that's where the instability is and where the showers are. you put on the clouds and you see the freckled nature of the clouds, that's definitely an unstable air mass. it's over the ocean, as i get out of the way and show you that. we'll have our best chance up until 2:00. you see green dots over the bay. they'll slide from northwest to southeast. by 4:00, trying to crank out a little snow up in the santa cruz mountains and maybe toward mt. hamilton by the time they pass at 7:00. here's my accuweather seven-day forecast. so, cover the plants tonight. bring the pets in. just make sure you let the pets out in the morning and you uncover the plants because they don't like to be under there too long. they actually suffocate. in the morning our inland valleys will have the best chance for freezing temperatures. we'll be in the low to mid-50s about through saturday with another chance of of a stray shower, rain or snow, wednesday

i we worked with pg&eof to save energy because wenie. wanted to help the school. they would put these signs on the door to let the teacher know you didn't cut off the light. the teachers, they would call us the energy patrol. so they would be like, here they come, turn off your lights! those three young ladies were teaching the whole school about energy efficiency. we actually saved $50,000. and that's just one school, two semesters, three girls. together, we're building a better california.
