head bowed, his eyes fixed to the ground. a source familiar with the investigation tells abc news cruz had access to ten guns, seven which he legally purchased including an ak-47 and the ar-15 allegedly used in the massacre. that same abc news/"washington post" poll found the country is still split on whether assault weapons should be banned. diane and kendis. >> all right, that's arlette saenz for us live from washington. thanks, arlette. and we're also learning new details about what administrators at the accused shooter's previous school knew about him. >> our miami station wplg has uncovered the school board's list of concerns. new documents show school administrators were aware of his obsession with guns. papers indicate the school board was aware that he was preoccupied with wars, terrorism and people getting killed saying the teen was fascinated by guns and felt he needed one to feel safe in the world. >> yeah, everything everybody seems know, we didn't know. >> reporter: the couple who took the suspect into their home last

november after his mother died of the flu says they knew he had guns, but they say they were locked away. >> before he moved in, one of the stipulations is he had to get a gun safe, and we got a gun safe on the way back from lantana from moving his stuff to our house. >> he didn't have free access. >> no, i thought i had the only key to the gun safe. >> reporter: it's also been revealed before moving in with the couple, florida's department of children and families visited the suspect's home in 2016 to investigate allegations he was being victimized by his mother. after an investigation that department says they found no indications of abuse or neglect. records indicate he was taking medication, had depression, adhd and autism. >> never should have happened and, again, if we had known any of the things that we are hearing, we're learning a lot about all of this just the same as everybody else. you know, and we feel betrayed as well and just shocked. >> reporter: in the meantime, classes at stoneman douglas high will be back in session next week sending out this robocall

with the announcement. >> i know that many of us are at different phases of the grieving process, but a huge part of the healing process involves bringing our eagle family back together. our goal is to resume classes on a modified schedule on tuesday, february 27th. >> and some faculty members will return to the school this friday. in the meantime, our miami station reports those documents from the accused shooter's previous school show he was dependent on psychiatric medication, and despite showing some progress, he continued to struggle in social situations before he was transferred to stoneman douglas. and president trump has now endorsed mitt romney's senate campaign in utah. the two have traded barbs over the years. trump once called romney a dope and romney criticized trump during the campaign calling him a phony, but that's apparently water under the bridge now. the president on twitter last night offered his full support saying romney will be a great senator. the battleground state of pennsylvania may be feeling a little blue this morning. a court ordered redrawing of the

state's congressional map has now been released. this is the old map. look at that carefully, and now this is the new one, court drawn and you can see analysts say it could help democrats pick up several seats now that typically blue cities are back together inside certain districts that were previously split. republicans are expected to appeal the new map. and a volcanic eruption has caused flight warnings to be ramped up to their highest level in indonesia. an ash cloud rose nearly 24,000 feet over the island of sumatra on monday shutting down at least one airport and sending thousands running from the area. thankfully no injuries reported. reports say visibility on the ground was as low as 20 feet. well, back in this country time now for a slick commute this morning for parts of the upper midwest thanks to a large and dangerous storm system bringing snow and ice. more than 20 states are facing severe weather. let's get a closer look at your forecast for this tuesday. good morning.

we are bracing for significant snowfall, a bit of ice and possibly floods. locally 18 inches of snow in wyoming throughout portions of south dakota and we're looking at 4 to 8 in other areas towards the great lakes region. this low pressure system will swing to the north and then we brace for an icy mix that will affect iowa going into wisconsin then on the underside of this soaking rain possibly causing flooding that will affect chicago, st. louis, little rock, dallas, down to san antonio. i'm accuweather meteorologist paul williams. still ahead -- traveling from washington, d.c. to new york city in less than a half hour. we'll explain why it's one step closer to possible. and also ahead, neighbors on alert after this cougar gets its paws on the window of a house. and later, hundreds of kfcs are forced to close because of a cr

police in the wisconsin neighborhood are warning people to stay alert after someone spotted a cougar in their front yard. you can see the big cat walk right up to the window. looks like it almost knocks there. that was at a house in brookfield, and the people living there say they didn't know the cougar had visited until they saw it on their surveillance video camera. the fbi joined the search for a 5-year-old boy in wichita, kansas, missing since saturday. his stepmother says she last saw lucas hernandez in his bedroom before she fell asleep. but right now police say there's no evidence lucas was actually abducted. family members have reportedly raised concerns about the boy's welfare in the past. police searched two nearby parks on monday. the postal service is now offering a $50,000 reward for information on the unsolved shooting death of a dallas postal worker.

police say tony mosby was found shot in his mail truck on interstate 30. the truck was riddled with bullets. no arrests have been made. co-workers have described mosby as quiet and easy to talk to. a long awaited trial in minneapolis gets under way pitting the state of minnesota against the manufacturer 3m. the state wants the company to pay $5 billion to help clean up the environment after dumping chemicals for decades. the pollutants are blamed for posing a health threat to people as well as wildlife, but 3m insists it did nothing wrong or illegal. a company headed by elon musk has received a permit to begin preliminary work on a tunnel between new york and washington for his hyperloop. musk says the travel time between the two cities in the hyperloop would be just 29 minutes. a similar tunnel planned between las vegas and los angeles. in this case the permit allows for building preparations at just a single site in washington. and video from the seafood section of a supermarket caught

he and his friend, 17-year-old susan mise, had been carjacked and robbed at gunpoint but police say mise admitted to orchestrating the whole thing to get money from her father. she and her friend face charges and police are still searching for a 15-year-old suspect. a substitute teacher in north carolina has been fired after video showed him body slamming a seventh grade student. police in greensboro have not confirmed how that confrontation started. in a facebook book the student's mother says it was a dispute over valentine's chocolates. researchers say they have come up with a major breakthrough into the detection of autism and researchers say they have developed a first of its kind blood test to uncover the disorder in children. it measures the level of protein in blood plasma. the study says new methods are 92% effective, however, doctors say more studies teed to be done. autism affects more than 3 million americans. turning to sports now, major league baseball is hoping a new rule will speed up games this
