over the altamont pass. we had an earlier stall, still an hour drive in the dublin/pleasanton area and slow and go on your approach with one vehicle still out there in the center divide near thornton. thanks, sue. a small flurry of earthquakes in just the past 30 hours. a 2.8 hit alamo and the usgs reports three more happened at 4:25 all of these are very close to danville high school. that followed by 2.5. no reports of any damage. let there be snow. it was a rare winter treat for some people in the east bay hills.

to the scene. amy? >> reporter: firefighters are still here, the home is still standing but it looks destroyed from this fire. the fire marshal is here with me, joining me now live to talk to us more about this fire. can you tell us who was here and how they're doing? >> we had four people in the residence at the time of the fire. they're doing okay. one person had a stroke previously. they're fine but we had to pull them away. it was a minor injury thankfully. >> t >> reporter: the house, it doesn't look good. can you tell us what happened? >> we had fir coming out of pretty much all the windows and doors.

it was a well-involved fire by the time we got here. the majority of the house is destroyed. right now we're trying to get to hot spots. we had a stubborn fire in the attic. we've gotten the upper hand on that and hopefully will have the fire completely out soon. >> reporter: have you been able to talk to them and understand why it got so large before they figured out what was happening? >> we've talked with the residents. we're still trying to figure out where the fire occurred. we think it was in the back of the house away from all the bedrooms. if the fire went for a period of time without being detected that would have led to the fire being so big when we got here. >> reporter: that makes sense. too early the cause of the fire. they're working on it. they still have a lot of work here to do. >> amy, thank you. the first bus of students who

survived last week's shooting in parkland, florida, have now arrived in tallahassee. >> more than 100 students from marjory stoneman douglas high school plan to meet with lawmakers to urge them to enact gun control law that is include restriction ons assault rifles. the students hope it will lead to common sense laws and plan to hold a rally tomorrow. the shooting in florida is hitting close to home. >> one of 17 people shot and killed. >> at a young age always helping everyone out. he was an amazing swimmer. >> students say they fear another school shooting could happen here. they joined dozens advocating for gun control. >> more than $1.6 million donated to the go fund me page

by looking into your retina. google says its method accurately predicts which would experience a heart attack or other cardiovascular event within five years and which ones would not. google said the scans of 280,000 patients into the device and it taught itself to recognize the telltale signs of health danger to come. google was surprised at the accuracy of its results. it says it could be months or years, though, before these methods are used routinely. it is frosty cold in our inland valleys. look at this especially from pleasant hill all the way down to livermore. we're in the upper 20s. look at mt. diablo, 26. about the same as it is in the valleys. 32 in concord. highway 4, we're in the mid to upper 30s. a look at the rest of our neighbors and what jumped out was napa's temperature, 24 degrees right now. hopefully they're taking care of

those budding vineyards right now. 27 in santa rosa. we have 35 in hayward. 36 in san jose and also in mountain view. let's talk about your activity planner, exercising, dress warmer obviously especially this morning. the bay and the air temperature this afternoon about the same. low to mid-50s. the same thing in our beaches. it won't be as breezy. i want to show you that real quick. look at the chances of rain. some of them may have snow. we'll talk more about that coming up. back to the east bay with sue. a couple problem spots. we'll head back to the dumbarton bridge, your approach on westbound 84 near thornton. we have one vehicle left out there originally a three-car accident. one car in the center divide but you are stacked up now back towards 880 and in the pittsburg area westbound 4, a motorcycle down near railroad blocking the left lane. i'm looking at about a 30-minute drive from antioch into concord past the scene of this accident.

president trump said romney has his full support. romney accepted that endorsement. the two have had a rocky relationship. romney has been a persistent critic of the president. the pentagon expected to announce its new policy on transgender troops this week after six months of legal battles. it started with president trump's tweets calling for a ban on their service. several federal court rulings have since prevented the pentagon from implementing the ban. the new policy will replace the obama administration which allowed transgender troops to serve openly for the first time. defense secretary jim mattis announced in september a panel of experts would develop a new policy on transgender service members by february 21st. 6:15 now. north korean leader kim jong-un wants to turn his country into a sports superpower much like east germany was in the '70s and '80s. he's reportedly pouring money and resources into training and infrastructure for athletes. the country now even has an all-sports television channel. north korean athletes have made

global in roads in south korea but they have battled for dead last in most competitions. for the first time ever fedex hired a female african-american pilot. tahirah lamont brown said her interest in piloting started when she was in high school. for those wishing to fly brown says getting there is hard work but it's worth it. a new poll shows south bay voters approve of google's plan to bring 20,000 jobs to downtown san jose. the poll was conducted for the bay area news group and leadership group. 79% of 31 registered voters say they supported the development that would combine jobs, housing, and mass transit. google hopes to develop 6 million to 8 million feet of offices. we have heard from critics who worry the expansion could only worsen the affordable housing shortage. some calling it the star mangled banner. >> very clever.

singer fergie's jazzy interpretation of the anthem at the nba all-star game had some in the stadium including warriors draymond green laughing. >> couldn't help it. >> and there's the smile. some say it is one of the worst renditions since roseanne barr. mark clay is an associate music professor at the university of michigan, a leading authority on the national anthem. he calls the anthem a flexible vehicle that allows for variations but thinks that fergie's sexy interpretation made her version off key. >> sultry is not the kind of affect we want for our patriotic rendition of the anthem. it certainly is surprising. >> fergie said, in part, i'm a risk taker artistically, but clearly this rendition didn't strike the intended tone. she says she tried her best. >> that's what i used to say to my dad when i was in the outfield, daydreaming, and would

miss the ball. >> the ball would hit you in the head. i tried my best. >> tried my best. >> my son used to pick daisies. >> so we have something in common. >> i guess so. >> with fergie. >> that's not bad company. that's not bad. let's talk about what's going on. we have company we're keeping with like the frozen tundra of places up north with all these temperatures. in fact, many neighborhoods in the san jose area and down in the santa clara valley freezing cold right now. looking at 280 and 17 where it's about 32 degrees right now. mostly sunny, showers possible this evening. those clouds will linger and that's why it will be almost as cold tonight but not as cold as this morning. and chances for a wintry mix, a couple more of those coming up. let's start with those temperatures about 50 to 54 for most of us. you can see the outlier, san jose, 56. along the coast in the upper 40s. but it won't be as breezy as yesterday. that's nice. temperatures will still be freezing cold in some of our inland valleys. notice the cloud cover is going to keep the bay and into san

francisco mid-30s to low 40s. some green out there. let's talk about -- we'll jump ahead to 5:00. as we head from 5:00 up until midnight, look at that, some showers develop along the coast and push along our coast all the way through 7:00 in the morning. most of the day tomorrow is quiet, 5:00 in the evening through the overnight hours a stray shower or two. our best chance of seeing something repeat like we did yesterday is thursday afternoon and it will contain the pink and white, hail and snow. and it will be over by thursday evening. my accuweather forecast, a break friday. another weak storm saturday and another chance, a better chance of more widespread rain. temperatures below average all seven days. hi, sue. good morning. and let's get to it. lots of issues to deal with on your first day back at work, if you had yesterday off. 84 near thornton, a three-car accident out there for quite some time. one car left in the center divide and traffic is starting to thin out a little bit, but

you are finding some slowing from 880 over to 84. this is a motorcycle down here, westbound 4 near railroad and it is stacked up back in towards antioch. if you're heading to pittsburg a break past the scene of the motorcycle which is blocking the two left lanes and then you are slow again from bay point into concord for about a 30-minute drive. earlier accident involving a motorcycle westbound 580 near hopyard cleared out of lanes fortunately and a new accident no reported in the richmond area, westbound 80 near cutting. a big rig with a flat tire, out changing its tir in one of the lanes and you are slow back into san pablo and westbound 80 commute. >> thanks, sue. look at what our crews saw on the embarcadero. a little bit of trouble driving. we watched it brake several times in the middle of the road. there was someone in the driver's seat but they're only supposed to take control in case of emergency. safe to say some more testing

will likely be done. it's not every day this big cat comes out of the woods to say hi. watch as this cougar walks up to a front porch and peers through the window. its paws left a print on the windowsill. this was all caught on camera at a home in wisconsin early sunday morning. agents with the department of natural resources tried to follow the cougar's tracks but they lost the trail. they say the same cougar was spotted two weeks ago. what is happening today as calls for bail reform in california are only growing louder. >> a girl invited friends to her 7th birthday party and no one showed up. however, a disney princess came to the rescue. now there's another surprise in the works. first here is a look at what's ahead on "good morning what's ahead on "good morning mesh" at

course, but services for those in need when we have a freeze warning like this. matt keller is loiv for us in san jose. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, natasha and reggie. extra layers indeed. i see a lot of people with hands in their pockets and they're walking quickly to get to their train this morning here. you can see it is 28 degrees in morgan hill. pretty chilly. a lot of people are bundling up as they get ready to head to work on caltrain. some rode their bikes and say that made the temperatures even worse. some had to get creative wearing extra sweaters and jackets for their commute. >> it's layers. i go to work pretty early but today is one of the days i have to be in really early so wrapping up is key, i guess. >> reporter: and walnut creek cars were coated with ice. temperatures in the mid-20s. in danville more of the same.

add the #abc7now when you post it on social media, that way we can find it and you may see it on air. 6:34 now. happening today the men charged in the deadly ghostship warehouse fire will be back in court. derick almena and max harris face involuntary manslaughter charges for the fire that killed 36 people. this morning they're expected to enter pleas. they operated as managers of the property. the case could go to trial in july. happening today groups fighting for bail reform will hold a rally in san francisco. supporters of the reform act say their bill will ensure people are not kept in jail simply because they can't afford bail to buy their freedom. a rally is planned for 1:00 p.m. in front of the hall of justice. in addition to the rally the public defender and the district attorney's office will each hold their own news conference on the issue. as we learn the stories of the 17 victims in the school shooting in parkland, florida, we are finding out about

unbelievable acts of selflessness. and one of them was a 15-year-old boy. this for me was a story that broke me. >> yes, it's tough. there's a push now to give him a full honors military burial. one friend says he was last seen holding doors open to let students and teachers escape saving their lives while sacrificing his. now he was killed in the process, and he was wearing his junior reserve officers training corps uniform. a petition for the full honors military burial needs 100,000 signatures. 56,000 have been signed so far. the honors include a folding ceremony for the american flag draped over the casket. if you'd like to sign that petition we have the link to it at abc7news.com. new this morning an abc news/"washington post" poll reveals americans believe president trump and congress are not doing enough to prevent school shootings. it's giving us insight into what people think could have prevented last week's shooting in parkland, florida.

77% say better mental health monitoring and treatment is needed. 58% say stricter gun laws. 42% of people polled say it could have been prevented by allowing schoolteachers to carry guns. 77% of americans say congress is not doing enough to try to stop such shootings. 62% say the same of president trump. lawmakers in florida are feeling the pressure to consider new gun laws. the names of the 17 students and teachers killed at stoneman douglas high school rang out at candlelight vigils across florida. yesterday was a day of remembrance and activism from a grassroots rally in los angeles to a lie-in protest at the white house. survivors in the massacre are taking their crusade now to tallahassee, florida, ready to push lawmakers to enact tougher gun laws. >> we are resilient to make a change because there's so much grief in this community and my friends and i are turning our grief into political action. >> a source familiar with the investigation tells abc news the

suspected shooter, nikolas cruz, had access to ten guns. seven he really purchased. an ak-47 and the ar-15 allegedly used in the attack. happening today the city of alameda could take a step towards allowing legal cannabis businesses in the city. businesses like steep hill labs have not been able to set up shop in alameda though pot was legalized last month and that's because the city has no regulations for cannabis business permits. city planners will present some proposed rules tonight and will listen to arguments for and against pot businesses in the city. the lack of rules in the pot industry isn't just affecting alame alameda. a new report from the growers association found less than 1% of the state's known cannabis growers are licensed as of february 7th. that's about 500 out of an estimated 68,000 growers. licensing costs and regulatory barriers are to blame here. another recent study found recreational pot should produce $5 billion in taxable revenue

like mine you have to scrape off some frost and lighter breezes if you're going to be on the bay. let's talk about what to do with the kids today. either dress in layers or have a heavy jacket for the morning. have a medium jacket for 11:00 and have a lighter jacket for 3:00 as temperatures will go from freezing cold to low 50s. i want to show you that because this is a big part of my next forecast coming up less than seven minutes away. a couple chances of rain. some could contain hail and snow just like the ones that hit the east bay yesterday. sue tells me she has a new accident. unfortunately, yes, coming off the waldo grade, southbound 101, outside the robin williams tunnel, closer to alexander. apparently five to seven vehicles involved, and three lanes of traffic blocked. again, this is southbound 101 through sausalito approaching the golden gate bridge. you can see on our sensors delays are starting to build back through the tunnel. over to railroad avenue on westbound highway 4 a motorcycle down blocking the two left

lanes. they're in the clearing phases there. and west 580, a motorcycle down here. that has been cleared out of lanes and traffic is improving for sure. a couple of accidents on your 80 corridor, west 80 near cutting and another one up near hercules. both have traffic very slow through the area with speeds of less than 40 miles an hour, the entire stretch from hercules in towards emeryville. and a big deal made between two companies this morning. albertsons announcing it's acquiring a big chunk of rite aid. and i've been reporting about this throughout the morning and throughout our show. i want to show you right now how stocks are doing for rite aid. they've been doing well since the opening bell, only a few moments ago, up 6%. and we've seen it up about 7.5% this morning. it's not worth a lot but it's up this morning. the two organizations are worth about $24 billion combined which

means this new company will now own 4,900 stores nationwide. albertsons pharmacies will be rebranded with the name rite aid. some stores will continue to operate as standalone stores. back to you. >> authorities are warning people about the danger posed by cliffs along the bay area coast. it comes after a man plunged to his death while trying to save a stranded dog. this happened at palisades park and daly city yesterday. the park sits atop a cliff near thornton state beach. the man's dog ran off and got stuck down a cliff side. the 67-year-old victim fell several hundred feet trying to save his pet. rescuers got to the man but at that point he already died. his dog was brought to safety. here at the live desk we want to take you back to the breaking news we're following in the east bay this morning. crews still on the scene of this massive fire overnight. jessica, thank you. can you imagine losing your wedding ring on a flight?

state. you can see on live doppler 7 what's going to happen as we head into the afternoon hours. low 60s in socal. mid to upper through the central valley with increasing high clouds this afternoon. the same thing in monterey, 51. 30s in the sierras and they're still making snow. at lake level temperatures 1 degree with a temperature of 9 below. you can imagine how cold it is up at about 8,500 feet. 3 to 6 inches of powdery light snow into friday morning. 2 to 4 sunday. look at those temperatures. it's going to be chilly up in tahoe. we do want to update the breaking news we're tracking in the east bay. a big house fire in walnut creek happened on a street called spring brook road. and that's where we find amy hollyfield at the scene with more. amy? >> reporter: hi, jessica. look at what fire did to this house. it looks destroyed. when you see the video

firefighters took of this fire when they arrived, you'll see why. you can't even really see the house here on spring brook road, there was so much fire. firefighters say there were four adults and a child, so five people inside. they all got out okay. one was treated for smoke inhalation. the fire was really going by the time they woke up and escaped. >> we've talked with the residents, the fire investigators on scene, and he's talked with them and we're still trying to figure out exactly where the fire occurred. we think it occurred in the back of the house which is away from all the bedrooms. if the fire went for a period of time without being detected that would have led to the fire being so big when we got here. >> reporter: they did find one resident on the ground in the front yard. he has mobility issues from a stroke he previously suffered. they helped get him to safety. the red cross is on the scene to help the family relocate. typifier fighters dent know what started the fire. reporting live in walnut creek,

whether you're just joining us or heading out the door, seven things to know before you go. you all stared at me. it is freezing cold this morning, no doubt about it. it's going to be that way through 9:00. all right new record low temperatures in oakland, sfo, and napa 24. 50 at noon. 53 at 4:00. just won't be as breezy this afternoon. the freezing temperatures mean many of you will be waking up to see your cars covered in frost. in danville even the grass has ice crystals right now. warming shelters have opened and we put the full list on our website. number three, investigators trying to figure out how this fire started at a walnut creek home. four adults and a child were inside. they were able to get out safely. one was treated for smoke inhalation. the red cross is now helping that family relocate. number four, the first bus of students who survived last week's shooting in parkland, florida, has now arrived in tallahassee. students are urging lawmakers to enact new gun control laws.
