wednesday morning. i'm kendis gibson. >> and i'm diane macedo. here are some of the top headlines we're following this morning on "world news now." three bus loads of students who survived the florida massacre have now arrived in tallahassee. president trump is also hosting a listening session with people impacted by school shootings. a down day on wall street blamed largely on shares of walmart. the company posted disappointed earnings. then shares lost about 10% of their value. that's walmart's worst one-day drop in more than 30 years. and today is the deadline for the pentagon to announce its new policy on transgender policy for troops. it comes after six months of legal battles sparked by president trump tweeting he was banning transgender service members. and what may be lindsey

vonn's final olympic run settled for bronze instead of had her second gold medal. those are some of our top stories this wednesday, february 21st. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." a good morning to you all. we're going to start this half hour off with that renewed push for tougher gun laws driven by the survivors of the florida school shooting. >> students from stoneman douglas high arrived in tallahassee. today, they're coming face-to-face with state lawmakers who have resisted gun control for decades. president trump took a step toward some change. maggie rulli has the latest. >> reporter: survivors have become activists. one week after a gunman opened fire in their high school, students from majory stoneman douglas taking their fight to

tallahassee and they're vowing washington is next. the white house is feeling the pressure after a string of recent mass shootings. 17 in florida, 58 in las vegas, 26 dead in texas. >> can you explain? >> well, i was trying to before you interrupted me. >> reporter: metrodomes after a contentious white house briefing, the president with this announcement, taking action on bump stocks used last year by the las vegas shooter. >> i signed a memorandum to the attorney general to ban all devices that turn legal weapons into machine guns. >> reporter: students in parkland say it was not a bump stock, but an ar-15 that killed 17 people at their school. >> we're here to hope to get them to change their minds. >> reporter: in their home state, people remain divided. students watched as the florida house voted against bringing a bill to the floor that would have banned assault weapons.

and a week after the school shooting, they have rejected a move by gun rights making it clear that the government has broad power to regulate firearms. the justice's left in place the state's ten-day waiting period for new purchases. the waiting period could apply even if a person already owns a gun and their background check is completed. a new jersey school district is hiring armed officers in the aftermath of florida. the east brunswick school board voted unanimously to add the extra layer of security in all 11 public schools. the officers will come from the local police force and expected to be in place at every school by next week. and an attorney who was fired last year is now the fourth person to plead guilty in robert mueller's russia investigation. it could put pressure on some of his former associates that could already have been charged. pierre thomas reports. >> reporter: the special

counsel's latest target, london based attorney is accused of lying to investigators. why did you feel the need to lie to the special counsel, sir? >> reporter: he a dutch national who married a russian oligarch in a lavish wedding that lit up social mead i a. he pled guilty to making false statement about contact with rick gates. e-mails in his role to pr war. and manafort and gates were allegedly involved in years beor the trump presidential campaign. according to prosecutors, van der swaan was communicating with a mysterious person, described as person a. the pressure mueller is putting on manafort and gates, already indicted in the special counsel's probe. they have been engaged in talks for a plea deal.

so far, they have been inconclusive. if he doesn't reach a deal, that means a lot more pressure on manafort. pierre thomas, abc news, washington. critics say donald trump jr.'s current trips to india is raising serious ethical concerns. trump jr.'s trip is meant to publicize the construction of new luxury apartment complexes. he's also scheduled to make a foreign policy address that will be attended by india's prime minister. the state department says trump is there as a private citizen and there is no consultation about his speech. but those critics claim he's acting as an informal ambassador while selling trump properties. jared kushner's policy won't be effected. the president's son-in-law is operating under a temporary clearance. white house chief of staff, john kelly's new policy says white house staffers working without a permanent clearance will lose

all access. kelly also says kushner will maintain his role working on foreign policy issues with no apparent change in his access. and united nations is calling for a cease-fire in syria, describing what is being described as a massacre. assad's forces pounded rebels. at least a quarter of those killed are children. >> reporter: bloodshed and fear as parts of syria descend into chaos. in middle of the day bombs are destroying neighborhoods. women and children escaping from demolished homes. one aide worker says it feels like the end of the world. a handful of brave rescue workers struggle to help the wounded. often the youngest and most vulnerable, scrambling to get people to safety. this man hands a small child through a window into an ambulance. this is one of the last rebel held areas in syria. it's been under constant a over 200 killed in the past two

athletic person we all know. it was going to be me, right? it was such an adventure. take a look. ah, curling. the sport with the things and the sticks and the people and they try to do good. curling? or at least that's what it looks like to the untrained eye and trust me, my eye and the rest of me were very untrained when i showed up at the curling club outside new york city to learn how to curl. do i let it go? nailed it. al though, i will say, it doesn't take skills to notice they have the snaziest pants of any sport, anywhere chrks is honestly why i showed up in the first place. more on that later. as far as the actual sport go, i figured the curling cup

>> basically a friend who curled invited me to an open house where three attractive men gave messages which all said we're nice people and this is fun and i said i'm in. >> reporter: i'm in. all it took was three attractive men and an invitation to have fun. >> and the word fun. >> reporter: and since then, in your 30 years of curling, you're here recreation nally, but you've also traveled. tell me where you've gone. >> iceland, germany, france, las vegas, montreal, halifax, tampa. there was a thing about curling in the olympics. i curled there last year. >> reporter: and since tampa and pyeongchang didn't quite happen for me this year, i jumped at the chance to get competitive on the ice with nancy here in new york. would you please sweep? and i mean competitive. was it all right?

this morning on "world news now" students on a quest for change. >> more survivors of the florida school shooting are arriving in the state capitol overnight to meet with lawmakers today. but a bill about assault rifles is already hitting a setback. plus, a political staffer fired for claiming some of the students are actors. and as president trump announces new gun control ideas in the wake of the school shooting. he's also on the defensive of russia saying he has been much tougher than his predecessor. there may be hope for millions of kids with peanut allergies. we'll tell you about the treatment being tested and getting positive results. plus lindsey vonn in the gold medal race. how did she do? but how would lindsey do in the selfie olympics? it is the game taking over the world. it is wednesday, february 21st.

announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." >> a good morning to all. we're going to start this half hour off with the survivors of the florida school massacre arriving in the state capitol by the bus load as they prepare to confront lawmakers on gun control. >> and many of those students boarded the buses moments after attending funerals for classmates killed in the shooting rampage. >> but this was the reaction as the state house refused to consider a bill to ban assault weapons. adrienne bankert has more. >> reporter: they consider themselves family. students who refuse to quietly let their friends die in vein. nearly 100 classmates from majorly doug last high on campus shooting that killed 17 boarding these buses for the 400-mile journey to the state capitol of tallahassee, led by the student-led group, never again.

i think what i'm doing with my classmates, we are speaking up for her. this is the way we're commemorating her and making sure no other family or individual has to go through what this city has been going through. >> reporter: parkland, florida. >> those students are going hoping to be in action a little bit later on today at the state house. in the meantime, an aide to a florida state lawmaker has been fired after making a controversial claim in the wake of the attack. his name is benjamin kelly and until last night worked for a republican state rep from tampa. >> kelly wrote an e-mail to a reporter saying quote both kids in the picture aren't students but who thier various crisis when they happen. it shows emma and david, who were interviewed on cnn. kelly later tweeted he meant no disrespect to the students or parents of parkland, florida and called his original claim an error in judgment. and a look inside stoneman douglas high for the first time

since that shooting. these exclusive photos from wplg show the ground floor classrooms that were suddenly abandoned. there are textbooks left open, desks in complete disarray and in one of the most haunting images you can see the broken window in a classroom door believed to have been shattered by the gunman so he could shoot inside. in the aftermath of the shooting, president trump is moving to ban bump stocks and other devices used to convert rifles into automatic weapons. bump stocks were used in las vegas. a bipartisan effort to outlaw it fizzled in congress. the president says we must do more to protect our children. >> just a few moments ago i signed a memorandum directing the attorney general to propose regulations to ban all devices that turn legal weapons into machine guns. >> the president tweeted last night, whether we are republican

or democrat, we must now focus on strengthening background checks. he's holding a listening session today with students at teachers. we are told they are from parkland, some from columbine and others from newtown, connecticut. and the president is claiming he's been tougher on russia than former president obama ever was. in a tweet, the president says just look at the facts. jonathan carl does just that. >> reporter: answering questions for the first time since robert mueller's sweeping indictment, of 13 russians for meddling in the election, the white house press secretary was pressed on why the president hasn't forcefully condemned russia's actions. >> the president hasn't said the russians didn't meddle. he's saying it didn't have an impact and it certainly wasn't with help from the trump campaign. it's very clear russia meddled in the election. >> reporter: but the president has never been so clear raising doubts after the story first broke during the campaign. >> but i notice anytime anything

douglas victim's fund. police in maryland may have foiled a plot to attack a high school. he was arrested at the school. he had a gun in his backpack and knife in his pocket. during a search, authorities found several more weapons, along with an apparent list of grievances against other students. and frightening moments at a school near cleveland. he's now hospitalized in unknown condition. no other students were hurt. the school was locked down for hours. it's not clear how the boy managed to get a .22 caliber rifle into the school. classes set to begin again this morning. the tsa is out with a new report saying a record number of guns have been found in traveler's carry-on bags. agents across the country found 104 firearms in carry-ons. 87 of them were loaded. dozens with a bullet in a chamber. atlanta hartfield airport as the
