live where you live, this is abc 7 news. a time to remember and reflect. today marks one year since the devastating coyote creek flooding in san jose. thanks for joining us. i'm jessica castro, and kristin will be in later today. to mark the one-year an verse try of the flooding, the community is coming together to thank first responders who came to their rescue. matt keller is live in san jose, matt? >> reporter: jessica, this elementary school was only closed for one day after the flooding last year. the administration here told me they wanted to have a sense of normalcy for the students after living through such a traumatic

event. at the elementary school in san jose, a time to say "thank you", and these people answered the call for help after coyote creek flooded nearby neighborhoods exactly one year ago today. >> it was a tuesday afternoon, and we can still remember. we didn't know what was going on. >> reporter: chris was one of 100 students at the school directly impacted by the flooding. >> that day was very emotional for me. >> reporter: they were rescued by boat from their flooded rock spring neighborhood. they stayed with family for a month while their home was repaired, but it was the community from the elementary school and franklin mckinley school district that gave them food, clothing, and gift cards to help with everyday needs. >> our community needs help, and we'll step up doing whatever we can. >> reporter: this group stepped up. about 38,000 dollars was raised by teachers and the community to buy gift cards to give to the families. food, clothing, and other items were donated and handed out on

campus in the weeks following the flood. this is video from a story abc 7 news did in early march of last year of david gomez and his daughters helping out at the donation center. today, all three were recognized for giving back. >> felt good to help people that lost everything. >> it's a good life lesson for everybody, especially the children to put back into the community when the community calls for us. >> i like to say thank you so much for helping my family and all the other families that needed help too. >> reporter: about 14,000 people were impacted by the flooding here in san jose. flood losses estimated to be around $73 million. live in san jose, matt keller, abc 7 news. new information this morning on the health of san francisco giants' legend orlando sepeda. the team said he remains in the

hospital in critical condition after suffering what's called a cardiac incident on monday night. the giants asked fans to keep orlando and the family in thoughts and prayers. the slugger known as "baby bull" played for the giants from 1958 to 1966. they retired no. 30 in 1999, the same year he was voted into the hall of fame. >> a week ago today, a former student opened fire on a florida high school killing 17 people, and survivors are now rallying with hundreds of other students at the state capitol. students are demanding and end to gun violence. this is a live picture from p k parkland, florida. meantime, lawmakers rejected a ban on semiautomatic rifles. students plan to hold rallies with lawmakers and vowing to

next newscast, abc 7 news at 4:00. called america's pastor and one of the most influential preachers of the 20th century. billy gram died this morning in his home in north carolina. he was heard by 2 million people around the globe including people in the bay area, and this video you see behind me is from the last time that he was here in san jose back in 1997. abc has more on his life and legacy. >> there are thousands of you that gone has been speaking to. >> reporter: for more than half a century, billy brought the word of god to millions, and his message was clear. >> to jesus christ as your lord and master and savior. >> reporter: preaching the gospel to more than 100 million people in 85 countries on every continent. everyone was welcomed. >> i don't know what your religious background or racial background or cultural background, it makes no difference. >> reporter: he became a fixture in the white house since 1950,

known as the president's preacher. he touched millions and remembrances are pouring in. jimmy carter said gram had an enormous influence on my own spiritual life. the arch bishop of new york dolan said in his catholic household, there was respect and admiration for him and the work he did to bring people to god. president trump tweets, there was nobody like him. he will be missed by christians and all religions, a very special man. over the years, the messenger may have changed, but his message had not. >> the greatest need in the world today is the transformation of human nature, to make us love instead of hate. >> graham remained nonpartisan throughout his life meeting with republican and democratic presidents alike with the message to unify. he said he wanted to be remembered as a faithful servant to god, abc news, new york. mike pence tweeted this tribute, karen and i were

saddened to learn of the passing of the one of the greatest americans of the century, reverend billy graham and we send our deepest condolences to the graham family. another tweet, blessed with length of years and service. rev graham helped a lot of people against the backdrop of southern culture. he's on the plus side of history. may his soul rest in peace. >> reporter: the perfect picture is getting out of hand. drones buzz by the golden gate bridge on the water front, and it's becoming dangerous. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live. amy? >> reporter: hi, jessica. yeah, what a beautiful place to fly a drone, right? the police went to city council here and said they needed help, that people were flying their drones inappropriately, and they needed restrictions put in place. flying a drone can be fun, even helpful. the city leaders noticed a dark side that comes with the hobby.

residents have complained that some drones are being used to follow them as they walk down the street or worse. >> one case where a drone was at the window of a house with a young woman changing clothes, and then one instance where one went into a doorway and down the hallway, video manned. >> reporter: the police didn't have a law in the books to protect citizens from this harassment. the city counsel took action and close to enacting new regulations to restrict drone use. >> not flying above 400 feet. not flying within 25 feet of people. not following or filming people without their consent. obviously not going into people's houses. >> reporter: they are following the lead of a major landmark, which was also dealing with drone issues. >> hobbyists, amateur drone operators do lose control of their drones. we've had them crash on to the roadway, crash on to the sidewalks, crash on to the struts of the towers, and it's

just dangerous. >> reporter: bridge district officials took matters into their own hands declaring the bridge a drone-free zone, calling for the federal government to step in to this new frontier. >> it's the wild wegst. we have a total ban on drones at the golden gate bridge. we need congress to step up and improve the legislation around drones so that we can keep the bridge and the areas around it safe. >> reporter: the city council here voted 5-0 in favor of this new law. next week, they'll have another read through. if it still stands, the law goes into effect within the next month. amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> amy, thank you. and new at 11:00, a two-alarm fire destroyed a home this morning. it broke out around 3:30 near julien court and jasmine circle. five people inside escaped. no injuries reported. the source of the fire appears to be the fireplace. authorities say flames escaped

threatened and says her husband shot the officer. the suspect was also killed after a police chase and shootout. the officer, whose name has not yet been released, was a 17-year veteran of the police force. family says new video showing the chilling moments when a bart police officer shot and killed a man now proves its case. last month, sahleem was shot, and we warn you, the body cam video is graphic. >> [ bleep ], now! >> abc 7 news obtained the recording of the original shown to tindle's family. the family insists this new video proves the 28-year-old was unarmed and shot in the back on january 3rd. a bart police officer reportedly heard a gunshot on 7th street when he arrived, he claims he saw tindle and another man fighting on the ground. >> it's horrible to see, but when it's your little brother,

when he's not at fault, you know, it's truly more heart wrenching. >> the family has filed a claim against bart and hopes the d.a. will file criminal charges against the officer. a southern california congressman with access to intelligence information is now talking about the russia investigation. last night, congressman adam schiff spoke to a crowd of more than 500 people in san francisco at a commonwealth club event. the congressman spoke at length about the russian investigation and special count robert mueller's detailed 37-page indictment telling abc news it's what's missing in the indictment that could be very telling. >> no one on trump's -- then candidate trump's team was indicted. is that coming? >> well, you know, it's interesting when you look at this indictment. it dealt with only one facet of the russian active measures campaign, that is their use of social media. >> there's more about russia,

or out and about. no worry about air quality. we woke up this morning warmer than yesterday morning, although, it was cold out with temperatures in the 30s and 40s. that spring board has kept us a little bit warmer now than 24 hours ago. temperatures in the upper 40s now to mid to upper 50s right now. here's what's going on outside. you can see, yeah, looks clean out there, doesn't it? let's roll into the highlights. mostly sunny, still a winter chill. it's deceiving. next storm arrives tonight. a couple stray showers, better chance tomorrow during the day, and more weak storms are brewing up north coming our way next week after a little bit of a break this weekend. here you go, 53 in half moon bay, the cool side. go to san jose at 58. that's most of our temperatures. up north, the best chance of showers and snow showers even, 50 there, and lake port and

clear lake. gorgeous shot. you can see over the ocean. that's where the clouds are dominant, the greatest instability as the cold air sits on top of the warmer water. for us, we'll go with the sunshine, bright and blue today, low to mid-50s if you're going out for lunch. mid-50s at 4:00, and mid to upper 40s at 8:00 and 44 degrees at midnight. that next storm's going to kick up breezes tonight, so there will be sheltered valleys hitting freezing, but we'll be mi mi mid-30s in san francisco. not much going on this afternoon. a few of the greens up there, the red, pink wintery mix, the white, that is snow, by 7:00, it's pretty much over. here comes the first push of that storm. 1:00 in the morning, random showers, out by 5:00, and then there you go, some more moisture comes in tomorrow during the midday, and snow levels drop from 3,000 feet today down to 2,000 feet tomorrow. one last parting shot on mt. hamilton before the storm exits

us. it's not leaving much in wet weather. at 7:00, nothing measurable tonight or this afternoon, and tomorrow, if you are caught by a random shower, not only will you get, oh, a little bit of rain in the lower elevations, maybe hail there, but also some snow at the higher elevations. less than .10 inch. here's the seven-day forecast. now, pattern is active friday, saturday, and sunday, but goes to the s irgsierra, and then it shifts to us and arctic sends us more storms with rain and snow monday and tuesday. >> hey, that's nice. we need the rain. >> yes. it's not the soaking rains, one of the atmospheric river events bringing us 50%, but we'll take what we can get. >> any little bit helps. mike, thank you. >> you bet. thousands in the east bay could have drug charges dropped. the county's d.a. plans to dismiss up to 5900 marijuana cases.

this all follows the statewide legalization of recreational marijuana. the law included a provision allowing people with past marijuana convictions to petition the court to assist them. nancy says her office identified 5,000 people who fall within the law. san francisco's based uber may go to court, this time over accusations from its own drivers who claim they were stiffed fare money. the examiner reports the judge officially gave the green light on the class action lawsuit. the breach of contract suit was filed in may in u.s. district court in san francisco. it alleges that when uber implemented a feature called up front pricing in the year 2016, it did not pay drivers their fair share. so far, no comments from uber. not many people love their driver's license photo. that's pretty much a universal truth. what if you could pick your photo? a southern california lawmakers introduced a bill to allow drivers to choose their own
