we'll check back with this accident in sunnyvale, debris in lanes that it's out of lanes. the accident itself. debris is causing slow traffic northbound up towards highway 237. >> sex abuse allegations at a south bay school entered a new phase. >> san jose police are involved. they're looking to see if the scho lolaws by mishandling the accusations. abc 7 news reporter matt keller is live for us at presentation high school. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, natasha and reggie. presentation high school students are currently on their mid winter break. that's not stopping the police department from conducting an investigation into whether or not officials did not report claims of abuse as required by law. the mercury news confirms the police investigation but the police spokesperson would not give any details on that. this just the latest twist in the scandal that's become public in october. since then a group called make press safe alleged victims come forward to share

line for residents. the aim is to target and break up rings of prolific auto burglars. it's estimated criminal street gangs are behind 70 to 80% of all the auto burglary incidents in the city. there's a severe worker shortage hitting the service industry in the south bay. restaurant owners say employees are moving away because they can't afford to live in san jose. replacing them has been really hard. >> you know what, they say i'm out of here. they're going somewhere else. maybe somewhere more cheaper than here. >> even san jose raise the minimum wage to $13.50 an hour. many of these people can't afford to live over here anymore. >> in fact, san jose's minimum wage will go up to $15 an hour next year. meanwhile, businesses struggling to get by are turning to family members for extra hands. the skateboarder involved in this incident with a police officer is now taking action. >> it's being called a first in the u.s. san francisco county jails are

all news, all morning. we're taking a closer look at the efforts to make our schools safer. >> in the aftermath of the park land school shooting, a growing number of districts are using anonymous tip apps. this one called safe to tell. just this week, more than 60 students use that app to report a social media post that threatened violence. the threat ultimately turned out to be nothing. but school officials say it's better to be safe than sorry. security proet katocols in e have caught a lot of threats since the florida incident. they've received 154 tips of planned school attacks since the parkland shooting alone. >> san francisco officials have implemented new policies for inmates who identify as transgender much the new policies will let them declare

their name and gender identity and indicate a gender preference. the examiner reports this is the first place in the nation to do this. >> all sheriff's deputies and staff will be trained. jail became the first county facility in the country to house transgender inmates based on their gender preference. regulators and planners at b.a.r.t. reportedly started nailing down costs and logistics needed to add a second transbay tube. according to the chronicle, b.a.r.t. is spending $200 million to study the project and it would cost as much as 15 billion bucks. it could go from alameda to mission bay. it would parallel the current tube and likely be built by around 2030. that's the same year that b.a.r.t.'s new fleet of cars would reach capacity in the current transbay tunnel. hi. i need to jump in and show you what's happening live right now. this is the falcon 9 launch.

spacex getting ready to send the satellite into low earth orbit. it's being launched from vandenberg air force base in southern california. we've been telling but this throughout the morning. we're seeing the launch now. satellite will be deployed about 11 minutes after the launch. the satellite is designed to take high resolution images much earth day and night and if you're wondering why do i care, how does this impact us? elon musk says there are two other test satellites on board for global broadband. oh, look at that. here it goes. and the reason the satellite is important, they're trying to bring internet to those leith served. a really big deal as we watch this launch live right now from vandenberg. that's in southern california? santa barbara. it's amazing to see, reggie and natasha. live, right now. >> spacex has been busy recently. they've been very successful. be interesting to see how this

it. now you're slowed from 880 all the way to the tolls. once you're on the span, you're looking good. >> sue, thank you. developing news, we're tracking a deadly crash involving a truck and a camaro with paper plates. amy hollyfield live in bay point for us. amy? >> reporter: hi, reggie. i just spoke with the man who lives in this home and the crash landed in his front yard. he was not able to go back to sleep. he's very shaken up. he pointed out there was a tree here. it is completely gone because of the crash. it knocked part of the tree on to the roof of his home. part of it all the way into the backyard. that gives you an idea of the impact of this crash. wait until you see what was left of the cars. there were two vehicles involved. two people were killed. according to mark martin who lives here, the passengers in each car were killed. a woman in the pickup truck and a man in the camaro. the truck was turning on to port chicago from wharf drive in bay point when it was hit by the

cama camaro. they landed in the front yard of the home right here on the corner. shocking mark martin who was inside. he said it sounded like a bomb went off. >> my head was literally where the cars crashed long side the wall. it's more than -- it's a crazy way to wake up. >> reporter: just before 1:00 this morning, one man was taken to the hospital. according to mark, that was the driver of the camaro. he looked unconscious. mark says his bedroom is right here. this corner bedroom is where he was asleep. he will never sleep there again. he is going to move to the back bedroom. he said this was just way too close. reporting live in bay point, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. developing news out of san jose where this car chase across several bay area highways ended with an arrest overnight. chp said it got reports of a dui

driver on southbound 101 in the menlo park area. officers followed the driver on 101, 85, 280 and northbound 680. a spike strip finally stopped the car in san jose. officers broke the car window to force the female driver out of her car. fortunately, no one got hurt. the driver will likely face several charges. developing news in hayward. investigators are trying to determine what sparked a fire at an abandoned strip mall. it started just before 9:30 last night on mission boulevard near the holy accept ep can you remember cemetery. it took 45 minutes to get the flames under control. there were transients inside the building when the fire broke out. no reports of anyone getting hurt. family members and supporters of a man killed by a b.a.r.t. police officer plan to demand justice from b.a.r.t.'s board of directors. >> 26-year-old sahleem tindle was shot across from the oakland b.a.r.t. station. the full body cam was released of the shooting. we want to warn you, it is

disturbing. it shows the moment that he was shot. b.a.r.t. police chief carlos rojas decided to release the video after porptions were released on social media. >> there's an assault with a deadly weapon or attempted homicide being committed. unbeknownst to him at 7th and chester. so he runs and within less than a minute, he's confronted with a situation that he did not create. a situation that he did not ask to get involved in, but a situation where he felt it was his duty to respond. >> meanwhile, attorneys for tindle's family say the video shows him being shot in the back without enough time to raise his hands as the officer was ordering him to do. more now on president trump's tweet this morning on gun violence. it appeared to be a major policy announcement. take a look at this tweet he sent out this morning.

georgia and then maybe one day i'll be president. that would be amazing. >> organizers also held a voter registration drive to get young people to register to vote and get involved. a b.a.r.t. rider dragged off the train, beaten and then robbed of his iphone. this morning, police are searching for the four young people who did that. investigators say the victim was attacked at the powell street b.a.r.t. station in san francisco. just before 11:00 a.m. on tuesday, the suspects beat him and took his iphone x. the victim is okay. so far, no arrests have been made. happening today, an emergency hearing in federal court to address the alleged mistreatment of pregnant women at a jail. last month attorneys for current and former inmates at the santa rita jail in dublin filed a lawsuit. it claims female inmates are denied necessary medical care and proper nutrition. the inmate services manager and commander there have both denied the allegations. check this out.

they did not report abuse claims from students to authorities. this is just the latest in a scandal that came public in october. since then, a group says 20 alleged victims have come forward to share claims of misconduct by eight teachers or staff members. they announced the creation of an independent office for students to report any complaints of misconduct, harassment or bullying to the proper authorities. some say it's lip service. >> it doesn't require any special team to follow child abuse reporting laws. they're very simple. if a child comes to you reporting abuse, you call police. >> presentation's principal, mary miller, said in a statement, we cannot erase the feelings or change the perceptions of some. but we can learn from the opinions expressed and move forward with greater resolve. the mercury news says san jose police are not going into details on their investigation. reporting live in san jose, matt keller, abc 7 news. matt, thank you.

it's 6:46 now. a sonoma county emergency official has been reassigned to a new position. it's in response to public criticism over fire alerts during the north bay fires. according to the -- in a different job in risk hole gren was chiefly responsible for a decision that ruled out the use of wireless alerts to cell phones to warn residents of an emergency. a man accused of stealing jewelry three times from the same store in san francisco is now facing charges. toby kessler stole nearly $250,000 in jewelry. he's accused of three thefts at the stone's town mal in january and earlier this month. take a look at what police confiscated. dozens of pairs of diamond stud earrings and a number of rings. officers say kessler was arrested during his third burglary after store employees called police.

happening today, immigration rights advocates are planning to pack a federal courtroom in san francisco as a judge decides whether to release an undocumented mother. this is video from last october when they rallied outside of the offices on sampson street. that's where a judge heard the case. she's a farm worker and single mother of three children who are u.s. citizens. she's been detained by i.c.e. at a federal facility for the last year now. after this morning's bond hearing, supporters plan to rally outside the federal immigration offices. now on to your morning money report stiemt toys "r" us back in the news, it's closing more stores and laying off corporate workers. the company filed for bankruptcy in september and last month, a going out of business sale started at 170 stores including some in the bay area. stores slated for closing will honor gift cards. toys "r" us say the sales last until april. no more sneaking food.

cinemark theaters will enforce a new bag policy. a theater chain will no longer permit bags or packages larger than 12 inches by 12 inches or 6 inches. medical bags and diaper bags are okay. >> officials say it's to enhance safety and security for guests and employees. sad sign of the times. taking a live look at the new york stock exchange. we're up about 152 points so far. you can see self-driving cars on the roads with no one behind the wheel within months. the san francisco business times reports that under proposed rules, the vehicles could hit the roads by april. those rules go up for a vote on monday. it is expected to be approved. the dmv could start approving applications within 30 days. under the regulations, a remote operator would still be required to take over if something goes wrong. can't stop thinking about this video. remember the video of the

african american community. it is okay for doctors to use nasal spray flu vaccines again. it voted yesterday to recommend the spray as an option for next year. two years ago the advisory group pulled its recommendation for flu mist vaccine after research found it wasn't working against the swine flu. astrazeneca which makes flu mist, says a study shows a new version appears to work better. olympic gold medalist natalie coughlin will be honored by her high school with a pool dedication ceremony. the high school is naming its new aquatic center after the three-time olympic swimmer who graduated from there in 2000. the center is part of the athletics complex set to open in april. besides the new pool, the aquatic center features a larger than life mural of here from the 2008 beijing olympics. very nice. let's take a live look outside with abc 7 news now. that's nice. we're keeping you up to date on the weather and traffic
