live where you live, this is abc7 news. >> hail, rain and even a little snow, more wacky weather today. all up in the sierra, the snow piling up tonight. chains are required and it is just freezing cold. good evening, i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm kristen sze in for alma daetz. the weather may have been dramatically difference. >> the rain may be gone, but more is on the way. meteorologist sandhya patel is already tracking the next round of rain and a chilly start to your friday morning. sandhya? >> that's right. it is going to be cold, we're already feeling it, dan and kristen. live now on doppler 7 you'll notice there are a few clouds around but the system that brought us everything from hail to showers to snow over mount hamilton as you'll notice going through is long gone. and as we track you back several hours, you will notice what happened.

winter definitely lived up to its name. it definitely produced some hail, five reports of hail and wind damage. right now the chill is in the air. near freezing in fairfield already and when you combine it with some gusty winds, half moon bay 33 miles an hour, the wind chill factor making it feel even colder. we do have more rain chances in our future. i'll let you know exactly when coming up in just a few minutes. dan and kristen? >> sandhya, thanks so much. >> well, hail, rain showers and cold windy weather was certainly felt and seen throughout the bay area today. >> yeah, abc7 news kate larson spoke to people in the north bay who were surprised by the wintry weather. >> reporter: cell phone video of hail bouncing off the ground in petaluma. a downpour of rain in vallejo. and a mixture of both at the sonoma raceway took a lot of people by surprise. >> i figured it was going to rain a little bit but i wasn't expecting the hail. >> i left for lunch, it was nice and sunny, i came back and it

was like someone flipped the switch and turned into pretty crazy rainstorm on the way back. >> reporter: once the afternoon rain and hail storms moved on, the sun went down and the weather turned cold and windy. we found mitch working outside the walmart in american canyon doing everything he could to stay warm. >> i had like a couple layers of shirts underneath and then i'm wearing a thermal pants. >> we got rain. >> reporter: carol wilson welcomed the rain in vallejo today. she's not so sure about the nighttime temperatures that followed. >> it's heck cold. it's so cold. i's like i'm up in tahoe. >> reporter: carol, if you're watching, the next chance of rain is monday and the weather should warm up a little bit this weekend. kate larson, abc7 news. >> a live look tonight from our mount tam camera. you can see the cold, but you can't see the coal, of course, but you can see the wind. be sure to download the abc7 news app for the chilly friday morning newscast where you live.

a new revelation. authorities say an armed deputy was on the campus of stoneman douglas high and did nothing during last week's deadly shooting rampage. this over the debate as arming teachers heats up. abc7 news maggie ruhle has the story. >> reporter: people battle over carrying guns. >> if i can carry a gun in school and protect anyone in my classroom, then i will. >> this is not, you know, stoneman prison. this is a high school. >> reporter: the president's weighing in. >> instead of advertising, this school has no guns, we are gun free, you let the people know the opposite. you come into our schools, you you're going to be dead and it's going to be fast. >> reporter: he suggests 20% of teachers should have training in guns. >> they have to go to training i would say every six months of the year. a fairly rigorous course in what they're doing. and they should be paid extra money.

>> reporter: the president's push comes as new details emerge about last week's school shooting. when the gunfire began, there was one person on campus with a gun. school resource deputy scott peterson. the sheriff says peterson arrived as the shooting was occurring and stood outside for four minutes. >> what i saw was a deputy arrive at the west side of the building 12, take up a position, and he never went in. >> reporter: peterson has since resigned. the sheriff said the investigation into his actions will continue. both of the nation's largest teachers union say they overwhelmingly reject the idea of arming staff, saying what their students need are more books and counselors, not more guns. maggie ruhle, abc news, new york. >> public school teachers in oakland will not be armed but some of their colleagues may be asked to go through active shooter training. oakland has the bay area's only dedicated school police force. they monitor a network of

security cameras from each campus, arming teachers, the police chief says, would be foolish. >> most people come into the education world to educate kids, not to carry a firearms. i can tell you there's a lot of people in this community that would prefer not to have police in schools at all. so, if you don't want armed police in schools, they're certainly not going to want teachers armed. >> front office staffer and principals may soon be mandated to undergo training about what to do in a mass shooting situation. and all day we've been asking our viewers whether or not they support arming school employees. our final results, 84% don't, 16% do. and we would certainly like to thank everyone who voted. remember, if you want to take action and have your voice heard, we're making it easy. we've put together a complete list of california's 53 representatives and two senators and their contact information on our website. you'll find it on abc7news.com. >> businesses are backing away from the national rifle association in response to customer feedback. first national bank of omaha,

the nation's largest privately owned bank holding company, has announced it will stop producing credit cards for the nra, this after the progressive news website think progress listed companies that support the group. enterprise holdings which owns enterprise, national andal mow car rentals also announced it is ending a discount promotion for nra members. >> bay area leaders are pushing back on president trump and his comment today about pulling i.c.e. agents and border patrol out of california. >> we have said let california alone let them figure it out for themselves. in two months they'd be begging for us to come back. >> his statements today are completely consistent with everything that he has said. it demonstrates his ignorance, it demonstrates his racism. >> oakland mayor schaaf wasn't alone in her tone. san francisco mayor mark farrell said we are a sanctuary city because we know our city is safer when law abiding citizens and residents regardless of

immigration status are active members of our community. >> a bizarre twist to a story we first reported last week. a high school track coach in san jose has been fired after he was arrested on suspicion of p possessing child pornography. 47-year-old clinton pappadakis was take sboen custody two days ago at his san jose home. he was the track coach at oak grove high school. police began investigating him in september of last year. now, here's the twist. look at that. his twin brother clifford was arrested last week, also on child porn charges. clifford taught p.e. at willow glenn middle school in san jose. >> a new call tonight from the california highway patrol. whoever is shooting beebes at charter buses on bay area highways is still out there and authorities want your help stopping them. abc7 news katie marzullo has the story. >> reporter: shattered windows like this show charter buses have been under attack on 280. >> they're small beebes that

have been impacting the commerce buses. >> reporter: two buses have been hit in the past two months. some of them tech buses carrying google and apple employees. the chp wants to find the shooter before it happens again. >> luckily as of right now we haven't had anybody sustain any injuries. but obviously we want these to stop because the next thing that could happen could result in a collision. >> reporter: the chp is asking anyone with information no matter how small it may seem, to call 1-800-tell-chp. in san jose, katie marzullo, abc7 news. >> car pool violators beware, the chp strike force is out in full force. they issued 200 citations to car pool violators along highway 4 and that was just during the morning commute. chp contra costa posted this video compilation of today's violator stops on its facebook page. >> all right. stay with us. tonight some staggering new statistics show the extent of our children's addiction to technology. tonight parents are in the bay

a new study released today points to some staggering statistics. abc7 news reporter lisa has reaction to the findings. >> reporter: it's a familiar uncomfortable scene millions of families face every day. kids glued to their devices, barely aware of anyone or anything else around. >> i have to say of myself i'm addicted to my xbox. i play maybe 80 hours a week, it's a lot. >> reporter: excessive screen time is top of mind for parents. according to common sense media and a survey monkey poll, 47% of parents worry their child is addicted to their device. >> i'm surprised it's that high. if we're that scared, why do we perpetuate it? so i thought it would be lower. >> you can't just say it's on the schools, it's on the parents. we have to do this as a community. >> reporter: just this morning middle schoolers at corpus christi school in piedmont watched the documentary screen agers which explores how tech time impacts a child's development. many parents saw it last night

and now with this latest study, some parents admit they struggle with boundaries. >> it's kind of hard, you know, when i think a kid can say, i'm doing homework, and maybe that's the case, but maybe they're also playing on the device a lot longer. >> reporter: so what can parents do right now? according to the experts, set up time limits and enforce them. learn about parental controls on device ands create tech-free zones in the house. lisa, abc7 news. >> an east bay congressman is calling for an independent federal review after a number of questionable landings at airports nationwide, including sfo. mark joined two other lawmakers to ask for a review from the government accountability office on runway safety. the lawmakers cite five incidents including three at sfo involving two air canada flights and an air mexico flight, all last year. abc7 news was first to report those sfo incidents.

>> airport officials in las vegas have come up with a novel idea, a special container to dump left over marijuana that travelers have inadvertently brought to the airport. pot is legal in nevada, but it's not in many other states and in the eyes of the tsa. so, these green amnesty boxes are being set up at the airport for fliers to dump their pot before they clear security. >> more than 90% of california is experiencing drought conditions ranging from abnormally dry to severe. the united state drought migration monitor released this map back in november when drought conditions affected just you can see the change clearly. now about 92% of the state is experiencing some level of drought. the yellow region around the bay area indicates abnormally dry conditions, more severe down south. that's the darker color. the good news is we could see some showers moving this way. >> winter really never got going for a ski resort in uotsuri

night. the yosemite ski area formerly known as badger pass announced today it will not open for the 2017-2018 ski season. this is footage from past seasons. in a facebook post, the ski resort said it just didn't get enough snow. it's offering season pass holders the option of a full refund or rolling over their pass to next season. a better picture, though, in the sierra where the snow is coming down tonight. you can see what the road looked like at i-80 in castle peak. cars moving slowly through the slippery conditions. chain controls are in effect way. >> well, here in the bay area after the hail and the rain today came this beautiful sight. look at all these rainbows. viewers sent us pictures as well. >> what isn't pictured here, of course, is the pot of gold. you can always send your photos to us on twitter. use the #abc7now. >> beautiful today after the really wacky weather we had. >> do we have any more wackiness

ahead? that's the question for sandhya tonight. >> hey, sandhya. >> we do have wintry weather ahead. you call it wacky, i call it wintry. right now i want to show you what you may have missed. i happened to catch this view from our south beach camera. you will notice some showers passing through and then watch carefully as that rainbow shows up as i came into work today. i got a chance to see the rainbow and it was absolutely stunning. all right, if you missed it, we did have showers around the bay area. 300th in san jose. 19 hundredth of an inch in san francisco. breaking the multi week streak of no measurable rain in san francisco. 500th in concord, 100 in oakland. trace amounts. we are feeling the chill. 33 in napa, getting cold when you add the wind in. what we call the wind chill, feels like 27 degrees. what it feels like to your body with the wind and the chill, 27 degrees. that's brutal. that's cold for the bay area.

here's a look at what's going to happen hour by hour we go for napa. temperatures tumbling by morning, 27 degrees might see some patchy frost. so bundle up. make sure you have the scarves, the gloves, the coats and the jackets to keep you warm. by tomorrow morning here's what you're looking at. temperatures 28 in santa rosa, 28 in lake port, ukiah 27 degrees, below freezing in livermore. same thing with oakland, even places along the coast and san francisco in the mid to upper 30s. so, it is definitely going to be cold. live doppler 7 showing you a quiet picture right now. the sierra had some snow. one report from one of the resorts is up to 10.5 inches of snow which, of course, is great news. here's what's not so great. the drought monitor comes out every thursday. today's update abnormally dry conditions indicated by the yellow has expanded to more parts of the bay area. virtually all of the bay area is covered in it which is not good. it's the beginning stages of what could become worse. now, it is worse outside of the

bay area. 36% of the state is in moderate drought or worse than that, you will notice those categories fromm from moderate to severe. that's where most of southern california and east are standing now. more for you from the sutro tower. gusty over the hills, cold morning, dry and milder weather for tomorrow. through the weekend, and there is more rain and snow coming next week. tomorrow afternoon, sunshine, really bright day. temperatures low to upper 50s for your friday. still chilly out there. here is one thing that we typically don't always see. a dry forecast for the chinese new year parade. we've seen rainy conditions for many of these parades in the past. but not this time around. just cooling off in the evening when that parade gets underway. low 50s so make sure you have a jacket. rain chances, we're tracking more. monday is a good opportunity for rain, snow and again on thursday. here's a look at the accuweather seven-day forecast. a cold morning as you will notice, bright day, chilly start saturday, but those temperatures in the nighttime and daytime
