is abc 7 news. >> i lost my mother a couple of days ago. so, like, i'm dealing with a bunch of things right now. >> top, as we learn more about the florida shooter, here in the bay area, teachers and law enforcement are looking for solutions to keep children safe. >> if you're going to arm educators, arm us with books. arm us with smaller class size. >> we can do little things as a law enforcement profession to absolutely have an effect on minimizing casualties. >> plenty of ideas. no perfect solutions tonight, nine days after a xwunman killed 17 people at a florida high school. >> tonight, abc news has obtained the transcript of the tip the fbi received one month before the shooting but did not act on. >> abc news reporter maggie ruehl has the new developments. authorities are revealing new details on what happened leading up to last month's school shooting, including the tip a

month before the shooting. a female warns the alleged shooter was going to explode. saying he would threaten to kill people on social media. she told the parkland police department and the fbi in case, quote, he starts shooting places up. the fbi failed to follow up on the tip. also released, a 911 call from someone who appears to be the alleged shooter, about three months before the shooting happened. >> the thing is, i lost my mother a couple days ago. so, like, i'm dealing with a bunch of things right now. >> reporter: the broward county sheriff's offers said they were called to his home 23 times. two of the calls were reltdre ro concerns that this person could shoot up a school. students are standing behind stoneman douglas. and many met with top officials, including florida governor, rick scott. >> my message to them is very simple. you're not alone.

>> reporter: today, scott announced a new action plan that puts $500 million school safety program. the students and their families will be back on campus for an orientation on sunday, to start, what the superintendent says, is a week of transition for the students. getting them back together to find some level of normalcy. the parkland school shooting is re-igniting the debate over whether teachers should carry guns. the nra and president trump have endorsed that idea. but the union representing teachers in san francisco is against it. and experts say carrying a weapon requires training and judgment. >> critics say, first, you have to have teachers who want to carry guns. many potent. many parents are uncomfortable with the idea. and then, there's the matter of acquiring and maintaining the proper skill. it will be neither fast nor cheap. at least eight states allow teachers to carry guns on

campus. but the teachers union in san francisco says no way. >> as a teacher and the president of the teachers' union, i can tell you that's a crazy idea. >> it's all teachers can do to teach, keep addreorder and look for the well-being of students, than to keep a gun and keep it a safe distance from students. >> arm us with books. arm us with smaller class size. >> reporter: then, there's the training. cadets in police academies undergo three weeks of training with handguns, shot guns and rifles. and that's not all. >> using the weapon is one aspect of the training. the bigger aspect is the decisionmaking on when to use it and how to operate in a highly stressed situation. >> reporter: nobody is saying that teachers need the same training as cops. but anyone who carries a gun regularly, needs to develop and maintain a level of skill. he is in charge of weapons

>> there was a big fight. a physical fight that occurred on the ground. so, the building and one group pushed the other out. and they believe the other group that got pushed out set the place on fire. >> the building has been red tagged and is considered a total loss. a protest took place at stanford tonight, linked to the brock turner case. the former stafford swimmer made headlines for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman in 2015. he was sentenced to six months in jail. we look at what today's protests hoped to accomplish. >> you took away my worth, my privacy, my energy, my time, my safety. >> reporter: student protesters at stanford gathered at the spot where the woman known as emily doe was assaulted back in 2015. and read passages from her letter to the court. there were plans to install a plaque here. but the university refused to

use the quotes that doe requested. >> stanford decided to take away her voice and rewrite the story in a way it saw as convenient. >> reporter: the university chose different quotes from the letter, including one that said, i'm okay. everything is okay. okay, everything is okay, it's - completely out of context. this is about a rape, not, you know, a "b" on a test. >> reporter: after brock turner and emily doe left that frat house, this spot became a crime scene. since then, the university has transformed it into a contemplative space. but protesters say this does not reflect the truth of what happened here. it has not been revealed what words doe wanted. in a lengthy statement, a university spokesman said ms. doe's representatives had prepared two quotes that the university could not accept. they were inconsistent with a contemplative space where members of our community could

peacefully reflect and seek solace. prosecutors filed new charges against the riverside county couple accused of beating and torturing their children. they will face three additional child abuse charges. they both already faced 75 counts for torturing, abusing and imprisoning their children for decades. if convicted, the two could face 94 years in prison each. police detains a 49ers player that prompted the closure of a los angeles prep school. here's the post that appeared on jonathan martin's instagram account. it shows a shotgun and ammunition with a quote saying, when you're a bully victim and a coward, your options are suicide or revenge. the post says #harvardwestlake, where he went to

new at 11:00, berkeley police arrested a laptop faith. as we show you, some fast-moving customers made the difference. >> reporter: berkeley police showed this video to show just how quickly thieves are snatching laptops. >> people know that and take advantage of it. we've become a target. >> reporter: more than 25 laptop thefts in 2 months has people taking matters into their own hands. u.c. berkeley studen alex ferguson witnessed a citizens arrest friday afternoon. >> they scan the area before. and they grab the laptop in this area and sprint it out. >> reporter: hot on their heels, coffee house customers chase the thieves down college avenue. >> i think one had an athlete backpack on. >> the people held the teenager

until mrilspolice arrived and arrested him. >> reporter: witnesses say the thief ran out of the shop to a vehicle and handed the laptop off. the laptop was not recovered. >> i witnessed, like, more than five or six times, by myself. >> reporter: the problem is so pervasive, police are now going undercover in the coffee shops. the tactic led to the arrest of six people this past weekend. and police say their undercover work will continue. in berkeley, abc 7 news. more earthquakes shook danville today. the largest, a 3.6 that happened at 12:20 this afternoon. the usgs has reported 60 quakes that have more than a magnitude one in the area this week. abc 7 news was in danville where contractors were helping to retrofit homes by bracing them and bolting them to the foundation. homeowners have until midnight tonight to register for the
