rainy day. people walking down market street in san francisco, going to show you, all bundled up, keep bei keeping their umbrellas handy. here we go. look at that. sky 7 shows you what fell overnight. >> stop what you're doing and look at this. live pictures from guess where, sacramento. that is hail you're looking at. it looks like snow, though, blanketing the ground. there's been reports of it falling there for the last several hours. >> it really does look like snow, doesn't it? but it is hail. all that cold weather is hitting the bay area. we want to touch base w yeah patel. >> let's get to where we are seeing heavy downpours right now in san francisco around the sunset district. street level radar, around noreaga street, it is wet, heading into the east bay, heavy rain right now, just northeast

of san leandro. and as you take a look, this stuff is moving southward. so watch out if you're in union city area. hayward, you're heading into that area. you're going to be seeing down pours around solano k we've even seen a mix of rain and snow over the higher elevations. this is a level one storm. showers briefly have a chance of lightning, hail and wintry mix above 2,000 feet. rainfall totals, about almost a third of an inch in concord, getting exactly that in mountain view so far. and there is much more rain in our forecast as the stronger storm hits. i'll be back with those details in a second. >> you can track the storm with our app. you can go to your area and

check on your neighborhood. a controversial decision by oakland mayor libby schaaf who warned about possible ice raids is gaining national attention. while some are applauding her courage, others are furious. laura thorn laura anthony has the story. >> that is part of this job. >> reporter: despite receiving personal threats, libby schaaf stands firm behind her warming that ice may conduct raids. >> i recognize it's controversial, but i believe it was the right thing to do. >> you want a bunch of damn illegals in here to vote for you. >> reporter: the mayor's staff sent us this sample of an angry message, one of many they say shaaph's office has received since saturday. >> owning a sanctuary district. >> reporter: the oakland school

district sent out its own messa message. shaaph says she did seek legal input from community leaders but not from the city council. do you think the mayor's warning was helpful? >> i don't think so. not the way it was presented. >> reporter: those who work with the immigrant community here in oakland say the mayor's warning has had an effect. the number of calls into an emergency hotline has tripled since saturday. >> we have had a lot of calls on the hotline, wanting to ask questions and verify the number's up and running but we haven't had any reports of ice action. >> reporter: we did obtain a video showing one ice arrest in napa county on sunday. laura anthony, abc 7 news. a judge delayed a ruling on whether to release a bay area father of three from ice custody or deport him.

♪ at a vigil in front of the ice office on sansom street, several broke into song. the judge will get back in three weeks with a decision. he was arrested after dropping off one of his daughters at day care for failing to comply with a deportation order. he has not seen his family since. a setback today for the trump administration over daca. the supreme courted rejected the unusual bid to get the justices to bypass the ninth circuit court of appeals in san francisco and take up the case now. the decision doesn't mean the justices won't eventually hear the case. it just prolongs it. it also means the white house will not be able to end the program on march 5th as expected. it also takes some pressure off of congress to act on a permanent solution for daca and the 700,000 undocumented immigrants who came to the u.s. as children. developing news in san jose

where neighbors are being forced to shelter in place after a freak accident involving a tree trimmer and power lines. tonight we are sad to tell you that tree trimmer is dead. >> reporter: the tree trimmer was working in the back of a home for sale here on page mills court, drive, rather. shortly before 1:30 this afternoon emergency crews got a report that a man was dangling from a tree about 30 feet above the ground. we are not going to show you any of that graphic video. when first responders did arrive, they found the tree trimmer dead, the victim of electrocution, after coming in contact with a high power line. it is not established whether or not winds played a role in that incident. the home is for sale, san jose fire, paramedics, and pg&e responded to the scene.

the tree trimming we believe was being done by a private service. as long as the power lines were energized, they, too, were at risk of electrocution. the tree trimmer was properly secured to the tree. >> he had the proper equipment so that he didn't fall. and so when he was electrocuted, he remained in the tree. >> reporter: what has this done to the neighborhood in terms of electricity? and have you done nischelle tany n -- shelter in place? >> reporter: it is lined with two-story homes, making the graphic scene visible to many of the neighbors. they dispatched an aerial ladder to remove the body from the tree. pg&e responded with ladders and ropes to assist. a shelter in place order is in place for many homes on the

street. they want to ground the line for added safety before they allow people to return to their homes. david louie, abc 7 news. university of san diego men's basketball coach lamont smith is on administrative leave following his arrest on domestic violence charges in san francisco. vic lee first broke the story yesterday. he was arrested at the oak land airport has his team prepared to fly back following a game against the university of san francisco. a woman at the marriott near union square is accusing smith of assaulting her saturday night. university says it's also conducting an investigation. it released a statement, quote, our values as a faith-based institution call upon us to proceed with justice and compassion. our prayers are for all of those impacted by this situation. now back to that snow that fell in parts of the bay area

today. sky 7 was those who wanted to get a look were out of luck. >> reporter: from sky 7, you can see the snow on the mountain ridges northeast of san jose. a pretty picture and not one we're used to seeing in the south bay. certainly a surprise for these cows that were once grazing in their green pasture. about ten miles away, the hillsides were covered in white. >> oh, it was coming down pretty hard. it was really wet and just clumping on the ground and sticking. >> reporter: those who live up on the mountain work at the observatory and for the most part were the only ones able to enjoy the view. about three inches of snow fell, making state they turned away dozens who wanted to play in the snow. we were escorted up following a

sand truck. the snow left quite a dusting, enough to have a snowball fight. any of them happen this morning? >> maybe. short ones. short little skirmishes. >> reporter: and crews who live on the mountain say snow may fall again overnight and possibly later this week. more work for them, but still beautiful to look at. at mt. hamilton, abc 7 news. how unusual is it to see snow in the bay area? >> drew tuma is here with perspective for us. >> when the ingredients come together just right we get snow in the hilltops. it's not common, but it does happen. the loop over the past 12 hours showing you around mt. hamilton colors of purple and white. that's the frozen precipitation that moved through the region earlier this morning. not only there do we see snow.

a transgender person is now under contract to serve in the u.s. military for the first time since a court ordered the pentagon to let them join, starting this year. abc news has learned the transgender service member will begin basic training later this year, but officials are not releasing their gender, which branch of service this recruit is joining for privacy reasons. president trump announced he wanted to reverse former president obama's order allowliallowing transgender members to serve. dianne feinstein failed to win the democratic >> she wasn't the only one.
