but another is on its way. for a while today, we saw some incredible weather. >> we did. snow at mt. hamilton. rain in the south bay and mounds of soft hail that buried other parts of northern california, as well. it was a strange wild day. good evening. >> tonight, the storm faded away but left a mark on many they are in the bay area. >> hail seen all of the east and north bay. in many cases enough to grab a baseball sized clump of it. >> in richmond, rain fell, enough to get wet at least. for more, here's sandhya patel. >> it was a wintry mix across the bay area. hail, snow, and showers as you mentioned. i'll show you where we're still seeing a few showers. snow showers that is over mt. hamilton, the santa cruz mountains, and mountain view, shoreline boulevard to fremont.

rainfall totals about monterey. tracking this storm here for thursday and friday, with one to two inches of rain. gusty winds and yes, by friday, talking about snow in the hills above 2,000 feet. aga >> thanks, sandhya. a stormy weather makes parts of the north bay this afternoon. the skies darken and the hail came down. pretty hard at times. >> and a cold, wet mix descended on mill valley. people say a rain-hail mix hit at about 4:30 this afternoon. east way residents got a thrill watching hail come down today. not very common as you know. lillian kim is live in walnut

creek tonight. lillian? >> reporter: people we talked with say the hail lasted for several minutes, and the kids especially loved it. the sound of joy from two little girls in walnut creek as hail started coming down. >> they thought it was amazing. they were like, it's raining ice. yeah, and then they kind of thought it was going to be snow. >> reporter: the hail came down in much of the east bay from oakland to hayward. and what surprised many is how long it lasted. many say the hail came down for several minutes, in some areas there was enough left on the ground for people to pick up and take a closer look. >> all of a sudden it started dropping from the sky, and i think we were thinking that maybe it was going to almost start to snow, because it seemed really cold. >> reporter: so cold that whatever came down in clayton did seem more like snow than

hail. either way, the day's wintry mix of surprises gave bay area residents a day they'll remember. lillian kim, "abc7 news." sacramento not spared from a dose of winter weather. hail came down so thick, many thought it was snow. the national weather service says it was nearly as wide as a dime. >> it was so deep in some areas car got stuck. some called it a wild weather party. right now in the sierra, chains are required on all vehicles without snow tires. this camera shows you why. in king veil, cars were held while cars were checked for chains. and when the storm clouds parted today, we spotted rainbows across
