intense winds that i have seen in my 25 years here in south lake. >> it also dumped three feet of snow at kirkwood resorts, crews spend the day at 10,000 feet to make sure they could get it ready for skiers. >> and we saw some snow here in the bay area as well. we caught this burst falling on mt. tam this morning. >> and hail in sausalito. >> and a viewer sent us this picture from westbound i-80 near the university avenue exit. >> with so much going on in the weather, let's get right to the weather. >> seeing a potpourri of weather conditions out there, check out live doppler 7 right now. i'm going to take you into where we're seeing some snow at low elevations in the hills of the north bay, right around our radar site as well. we're seeing some snow mixing in

with rain, light rain, bridgeway across mill valley area, and heading into the peninsula, mountain view to sunnyvale, so light rain. if you take a look at mt. hamilton, it's a rain-snow mix, and downpours have been going on in the east bay. it's starting to lighten up but still steady rain from walnut creek to mt. diablo. showers briefly heavy, thunder and hail, and snow in the hills between 1,500 to 2,000 feet. don't be surprised if you see snowflakes where you live. i'll be back with an hour by hour timeline taking you to part of your weekend that's going to be wet. there's developing news at the squaw valley resort where there's been an avalanche. the placer county sheriffs are on the scene to -- 20 skiers were reportedly involved and at

least one was buried. the avalanche happened near the k-22 ski lift, which is very well known. we're checking with the sheriff's office for updates and we'll bring them to you as soon as we learn of them. at one point traffic on south lake tahoe was completely stopped and i-80 at frisco grows had people sliding off the roads, despite the treacherous conditions, the snow is good for skiers. skiers have been waiting anxiously during a mostly dry winter. leslie blinkly trekked up into the mountains today to give us a firsthand look. >> reporter: it was a slow drive to tahoe, caltrans chain controls at only 3,800 feet. spinouts limiting the i-80 corridor everywhere. >> it quit snowing long enough for it to freeze over and then all the snow that was on the roadway became a sheet of ice, which makes it even harder to

remove. >> reporter: but once you're up in the mountains, it's breathtaking. quiet streets, big beautiful flakes falling and snow piled up on balconies and in driveways. sometime to shovel. >> it gives us something to do other than watching tv and drinking beer. >> reporter: it was too much for this coke truck that drifted off the delivery route and got stuck. according to sugar bowl resort, over 15 inches of the white stuff has fallen since wednesday. this is the kind of snow, the powdery snow that skiers and borders love, it's been coming fast and the winds's been picking up. >> the winds's picking up and making deep pockets. it's really good out there right now. >> reporter: sugar bowl expects big crowds out here by sunday, financial relief from the warm,

i.c.e. was spotted here earlier this week and they want it to be known they want to take back their neighborhood. when people spotted numerous white vans with tirvnted window driving through through the parking lot, people got suspicious. it confirmed their fear that i.c.e. was in the area. >> we're concerned because that's the most latino populated area. >> reporter: this restaurant manager tells us the entire plaza looked like a ghost town. >> we saw 7 or 8 hours where the streets were empty, nobody was even walking around, business was down significantly. >> reporter: 400 calls about i.c.e. activity where people were arrested or detained. >> we wer able to provide them with attorney to represent

them. >> reporter: i.c. ee. says it me 232 arrests. siren and immigrant rights groups is monitoring i.c.e. activity every day. >> if they do have an encounter by i.c.e., or they're approached by an i.c.e. agent, be sure they exercise their right to be silent and ask for a warrant if they want to enter your home. >> they are arresting people who had been ordered to leave the u.s. or had been deport and returned to the u.s. oakland mayor libby schaaf is maintaining her position to protect people from i.c.e. yesterday the white house said libby schaaf's actions were

under review by the justice department. the mayor had said she was trying to give residents time to learn their rights and know their legal options. >> it's always been my intention to be law abiding, to act within the confines of the law, but also to do what i believe is right, right for my community. >> mayor schaaf says her office has been flooded with angry messages, but she doesn't believe there's a threat to her or to her family. she says she's also recieved a lot of support from people in oakland. police still have not released the names of the suspects or the officer involved in a shoot-out this morning in santa rosa. it happened outside the gardagaa armored car facility. neighbors worry this won't be the last. >> i got woke up by gunshots. >> reporter: the shots rang out from a building that has no signs on the outside, but piles of money on the inside.

>> i just heard gunshots and said get in the closet. >> reporter: it happened before dawn when two men showed up at this armored car facility and demanded money. >> the suspect raised the firearm towards the officer, the officer was forced to fire multiple rounds at the suspect. >> reporter: police say he was hit twice and fled into a nearby creek bed where he collapsed. the officer's on leave and the suspect is expected to live. though they caught the bad guys, it's not a victory for the neighborhood. >> one of my neighbors in the next building got her window shot out last night and got a bullet in her tv set. >> it was just scary for my kids and everything. >> reporter: scary because it's happened before, police confirm this facility was hit in 2011 and 2012 both times by the same

can't get over it. he jokes about it in this commercial for the academy awards. but it's no laughing matter for pricewaterhousecoopers. for eight decades, the accounting firm has scar ballots and this year they're making sure it doesn't happen again. first, the team who counted last year, won't be returning, instead, two new people will be overseeing the envelopes, and a third person will be inside the control room. there's also a new formal procedure in place for when the envelopes are handed over. both the celebrity presenter and the stage manager will check they're given the correct envelo envelope. and something else we got to point out is this, all of the pricewaterhousecoopers employees who are working the big show on sunday, not allowed to use their cell phones or social media,

minutes ago, snow started to develop right over the north bay, so some areas as low as 1,500 feet getting some snowflakes, as you will notice on street level radar, we're seeing a mix of rain and snow as low as the stinson beach area, across highway 101. this is pretty cold stuff obviously. and we are tracking some moderate pockets of rain on the peninsula from portola valley road heading us to palo alto. san jose, it is turning to quite a bit of snow in the sierra. chain controls on all roads leading up there. i would not recommend travel. they have already seen anywhere between 1 to 4 feet of snow. there is an avalanche warning for the central sierra, that portion of the tahoe area until

more snow showers like they have been seeing, and as we go into tomorrow morning, this wintry mix will take over. make sure you have your shades on saturday afternoon, evening, this system starts to wind down, tomorrow morning it will be cold, near freezing in our inland valley, and temperatures definitely in the 40s. pack on the layers for your early morning plans, temperatures low to mid 50s, it will be a chilly saturday, surf is coming up, 10 to 12-foot waves right now, high surf advisory for the coast tomorrow. scattered wintry mix, level 1 for saturday, drying out for oscar sunday, but it will be cold warming up monday through wednesday and wednesday night going through friday, we have a level one system coming in. it's a milder storm, brings us much rain, and it's needed. >> looking forward to the rain,

our current storms may be great news for our water situation, but they're also accelerating a messy pollution problem in san francisco bay. rain waters are pushing mounds of trash through storm drains and into swollen creeks and estuaries and from there into the bay. to stop the problem at its source, environmental groups say the bay is asking state officials to take action against caltrans. >> so caltrans is four years out of compliance with requirements to reduce trash, they're violating the clean water act, they're poisoning the bay, and

they still haven't said when they're going to reduce the trash on the roads. >> save the bay is asking caltrans to install trash catchers on storm cradrains amo other steps, caltrans says it has budgeted $9 million to make improvements over the next few years. scientists have discovered a large number of penguins, the animals are crammed on to pelican island. these penguins, this type were in decline. satellites and nasa pick up evidence of the penguins, not the birds themselves, but large pockets of what they leave behind, the team then used a drone to help survey the island, the birds were thought to be threatened. it's finney's friday free
