>> announcer: live where you live, this is abc7 news. tonight, new video of the terrifying moments for one snowboarder after an avalanche buried him alive at squaw valley. tonight we're hearing from one of these heroes who jumped into action. >> so we dug him out and got him sitting up, and then his wife came up and, you know, obviously tears of joy right there. >> an unbelievable story. thanks for joining us. good evening. i'm kristen sze. >> i'm eric thomas. abc7 news reporter cornell barnard spoke to one of the people who described what it was like there. cornell? >> reporter: that skier witnessed the avalanche and started digging to try to save one snowboarder who was buried alive. the snow was piling up at squaw valley. five feet is expected by saturday, but all that snow has created some big danger.

>> people calling for help, you got to help them. >> reporter: that's what this man did. he's wearing the brown and black jacket helping dig out a snowboarder buried in an avalanche at squaw valley. >> about 30 seconds later people started screaming, yelling each other's names, trying to find their kids. >> reporter: five people were trapped under three feet of snow. that snowboarder was unconscious when they found him. the ski patrol said he was buried for six minutes. one witness, heather turning, crawled 30 yards to reach him and clear the snow from his face. >> we started like screaming at him and shaking him, and he came to. and wanted to know where his wife was. his first words were where's my wife? >> he was reunited with his wife minutes later. remarkably he wasn't injured. four others were rescued. one person suffered a serious lower body injury. sadly the body of a snowboarder was found at squall valley friday morning. 42-year-old wenyu zhang of rocklin went missing in a

blizzard. his friends reported him missing thursday nights. the weather claimed the life of a second boarder at the china na peak resort. he fell head first into the deep powder and suffocated. what triggered friday's avalanche at squaw valley isn't known. as for joe, he doesn't feel like a hero. >> it's a good day today. i'm going to take a sauna and have a cold beer and say a prayer. >> reporter: squall valley will reopen on saturday. cornell barnard, abc7 news. >> snow is piling up again in the sierra tonight. chain controls are in effect all the way down to 2,000 feet on highway 50. and at this hour, highway 80 eastbound east of colfax remains closed. use extreme caution if you have to drive up there this weekend. and this is a rare sight. snow among the vines. francis ford coppola winery tweeted this video from its skr vineyard in sonoma county. heading to sausalito, there was hail coming down pretty hard

embarcadero station. abc7 news reporter katie utehs encountered the problem on a bart ride yesterday. tonight she has more on a new program under way to address the issue. >> reporter: a short bart ride and a sickening discovery. i took this picture of hypodermic needles and cigarette butts strewn across two seats. >> it's unfortunate it's happening for transit agencies across the country. >> reporter: if you see a discarded needle, first of all, don't touch it. secondly, bart wants to know about it right away. go to the intercom in the rear of the train. call the attendant and tell them which car you're riding in. >> we want to address this as quickly as we can before the train gets to the end of the line because we need to clean that right away. >> reporter: bart is hiring 13 more people, specially trained to clean. it's a treatment, not a cure. these pictures show a man at embarcadero station. he shoots up, then passes out. >> we want to try to address this in a long-term situation, so hopefully we have fewer people with these issues coming into the bart system. >> reporter: bart has teamed up

with san francisco's law enforcement assisted diversion program, or lead. two bart officers patrol looking for addicts to help. >> they're looking for opportunities to find non-violent drug offenders and give them a choice that's different from being involved in the legal system. >> i think that's a phenomenal idea actually, that it's not just about punishing someone for using the drugs but, like, actually getting them into a program. >> reporter: lead is modeled after a seattle program and funded by a $5.9 million grant. since bart joined in october, 15 drug users have accepted help. katie utehs reporting, abc7 news. a 12-year-old has been booked into santa clara county juvenile hall on felony charges. he's accused of sending text messages to his classmates threatening a school shooting. >> young, a 12-year-old sending out messages like that stating they're going to kill other students as well as shoot up the school, we take that very seriously. as parents, we should be
