>> announcer: live where you live, this is abc7 news. tonight, new video of the terrifying moments for one snowboarder after an avalanche buried him alive at squaw valley. tonight we're hearing from one of these heroes who jumped into action. >> so we dug him out and got him sitting up, and then his wife came up and, you know, obviously tears of joy right there. >> an unbelievable story. thanks for joining us. good evening. i'm kristen sze. >> i'm eric thomas. abc7 news reporter cornell barnard spoke to one of the people who described what it was like there. cornell? >> reporter: that skier witnessed the avalanche and started digging to try to save one snowboarder who was buried alive. the snow was piling up at squaw valley. five feet is expected by saturday, but all that snow has created some big danger.

>> people calling for help, you got to help them. >> reporter: that's what this man did. he's wearing the brown and black jacket helping dig out a snowboarder buried in an avalanche at squaw valley. >> about 30 seconds later people started screaming, yelling each other's names, trying to find their kids. >> reporter: five people were trapped under three feet of snow. that snowboarder was unconscious when they found him. the ski patrol said he was buried for six minutes. one witness, heather turning, crawled 30 yards to reach him and clear the snow from his face. >> we started like screaming at him and shaking him, and he came to. and wanted to know where his wife was. his first words were where's my wife? >> he was reunited with his wife minutes later. remarkably he wasn't injured. four others were rescued. one person suffered a serious lower body injury. sadly the body of a snowboarder was found at squall valley friday morning. 42-year-old wenyu zhang of rocklin went missing in a

blizzard. his friends reported him missing thursday nights. the weather claimed the life of a second boarder at the china na peak resort. he fell head first into the deep powder and suffocated. what triggered friday's avalanche at squaw valley isn't known. as for joe, he doesn't feel like a hero. >> it's a good day today. i'm going to take a sauna and have a cold beer and say a prayer. >> reporter: squall valley will reopen on saturday. cornell barnard, abc7 news. >> snow is piling up again in the sierra tonight. chain controls are in effect all the way down to 2,000 feet on highway 50. and at this hour, highway 80 eastbound east of colfax remains closed. use extreme caution if you have to drive up there this weekend. and this is a rare sight. snow among the vines. francis ford coppola winery tweeted this video from its skr vineyard in sonoma county. heading to sausalito, there was hail coming down pretty hard

there on sherwood drive. >> a live look tonight from our richmond-san rafael bridge camera near the toll plaza. you can see wet roads. not much rain coming done right now but that could change again this weekend. >> let's check in with meteorologist sandhya patel. >> eric and kristen, let's take a look at what's happening in the sierra. they are chaining up. the snow is just piling up. one to four feet in the last 72 hours and there's more coming, which is why there's an avalanche warning. it's such a dangerous situation. central sierra back country definitely dangerous until 7:00 a.m. life doppler 7 showing you what's happening right now. we do have some lower elevation rain across american canyon, vallejo. street level radar heading into the peninsula and east bay. you will notice first the east bay. moderate rain around fremont, highway 84. street level paseo padre parkway, and on the peninsula from page mill road to los altos hills, we are seeing some rain and snow mixing in. quite a bit of snow accumulating on mount hamilton as we take you

back in time. then also rolling you back in time, we have the hail, the thunderstorms earlier today. we saw lightning strikes. this is a level one storm through tomorrow. light system on our storm impact scale. scattered showers. snow in the hills between 1,502,000 feet. we will keep the potential for the thunder and hail in the forecast for your saturday. find out what's in store for the rest of your weekend. time line is coming up. eric and kristen? a powerful winter storm has hit the east coast killing at least seven people. tonight, 900,000 customers are without power. streets are flooded or buried in snow, and thousands of air travelers are stranded. >> that's a lot of water. >> the massachusetts coastline battered by this bomb cyclone. a coastal flood warning affects 22 million people. streets were flooded over. dozens had to be rescued, including these children brought to dry ground an a front loader. there's nor'easter's biggest danger is wind and falling

trees. they've killed more than a half dozen people, ages 11 to 77. many major cities are buried in snow. upstate new york could see up to two feet before the storm ends, combined with powerful winds, it has made for dangerous traveling. at least 3,300 flights have been canceled. this flight in d.c. had to abort its landing in the last minute. >> southwest 5875, go around. climb and maintain 2,000. >> the cancellations reached the bay area. >> almost every other flight i saw was canceled. >> dozens of flights were scrubbed. one traveller landed in charlotte but couldn't connect to d.c. >> they just flew me back here. >> let's take a live look right now at sfo tonight. if you're traveling tomorrow, be sure to confirm your flight is not canceled. new at 11:00, we have disturbing pictures of exposed needles on a bart train. look at that. people shooting up at

embarcadero station. abc7 news reporter katie utehs encountered the problem on a bart ride yesterday. tonight she has more on a new program under way to address the issue. >> reporter: a short bart ride and a sickening discovery. i took this picture of hypodermic needles and cigarette butts strewn across two seats. >> it's unfortunate it's happening for transit agencies across the country. >> reporter: if you see a discarded needle, first of all, don't touch it. secondly, bart wants to know about it right away. go to the intercom in the rear of the train. call the attendant and tell them which car you're riding in. >> we want to address this as quickly as we can before the train gets to the end of the line because we need to clean that right away. >> reporter: bart is hiring 13 more people, specially trained to clean. it's a treatment, not a cure. these pictures show a man at embarcadero station. he shoots up, then passes out. >> we want to try to address this in a long-term situation, so hopefully we have fewer people with these issues coming into the bart system. >> reporter: bart has teamed up

with san francisco's law enforcement assisted diversion program, or lead. two bart officers patrol looking for addicts to help. >> they're looking for opportunities to find non-violent drug offenders and give them a choice that's different from being involved in the legal system. >> i think that's a phenomenal idea actually, that it's not just about punishing someone for using the drugs but, like, actually getting them into a program. >> reporter: lead is modeled after a seattle program and funded by a $5.9 million grant. since bart joined in october, 15 drug users have accepted help. katie utehs reporting, abc7 news. a 12-year-old has been booked into santa clara county juvenile hall on felony charges. he's accused of sending text messages to his classmates threatening a school shooting. >> young, a 12-year-old sending out messages like that stating they're going to kill other students as well as shoot up the school, we take that very seriously. as parents, we should be

diligent and monitor our children's social media. >> the student attends sylvan wood middle school in san jose, and police say a shooting threat in the alum rock school district was traced to a 12-year-old girl. she has not been arrested. new at 11:00, the fear of school shootings as high school students in san jose organizing tonight. >> a group from prospect high school spent the night getting ready for a march against gun violence they hope will be thousands strong. >> katie marzullo has the story. >> reporter: it's friday night but this is no social gathering. these prospect high school students are organizing a life changing event. >> i believe it's far past time for a change and i'm very excited and humbled to be a part of this movement. >> reporter: on march 24th, stuntss across the country will take to the streets for the march for our lives, a protest of gun violence. >> i'm tired of seeing thoughts and priors. i don't want any more thoughts and prayers. i want legislative change, and i

carpet in anticipation of sunday's show. even though it's dark out right now, we did see some stars today, just not the ones you'd expect. on the friday before oscar sunday, among the lighting crews and media from all over the globe, the stars walking the plastic covered red carpet look a bit different. >> i'm playing sam rockwell, and he's one of my favorite actors. so, yeah, he's terrific. >> reporter: instead of a-listers, rehearsal actors like ron waldron, who has been standing in for the time crunched real celebs since 1984. >> we rehearse the show as if they're not there. they come in very short time, do their thing, and they leave. >> reporter: for these actors, it's often their only shot at being part of the real thing. >> we have an oscar moment of winning, and we act all excited, and it feels like a dream come true. >> reporter: then there is a different kind of star, like oakland's own rafael sadiq, a first-time nominee for best original song, mighty river in the movie mud bound. this is his gift back to the bay area. >> the bay always held me up. this is good to, you know, to

during the 6:00 broadcast. yes, we were tracking snow over mount tam. and here is a time lapse of the beautiful view up there with the snowflakes tonight. you have to watch carefully. you see those snowflakes? all right. there's potential for more of that snow as we head into tomorrow. i want to show you a snowy scene sent to me via twitter from mendocino county. that looks like winter. thank you very much for this photo. mendocino county, 10 to 15 inches of snow. this was sent to me as well. this is the sonoma county hills today. yes, the snow was down to about 1,500 feet. unbelievable. speaking of snow, right now live look from our tahoe camera. that snow is piling up. one to four feet has fallen so far. they'll be looking at an additional 9 to 13 inches of snow in the sierra. up to 46 inches in spots. travel is not recommended. winter storm warning due to windy conditions until 10:00 p.m. tomorrow. just hold off. go up on sunday if you can. 48 hour rainfall totals certainly impressive.
