it's saturday morning. good morning and thanks so much for being with us. let's start with our forecast. hi, lisa. >> hi, chris. good morning to you. we have our storm impact scale up. that means we are looking at scattered showers. it's a 1 on our storm impact scale right now throughout the day. some breaks in the clouds now, but still those low snow levels, 25 to 3500 feet and a chance of a thunderstorm. so as we go to the east foot hills, you can see some scattered showers east of 580. more showers approaching highway 1. but this is the line we're watching from searanch that will sink south this morning. three quarter mile visibility in petaluma. we have chilly 30s in the north bay. 37 livermore. 41 in hayward. 38 in morgan hills. you can see the partly cloudy sky in san francisco. showers will be increasing

throughout the morning and the possibility of an isolated thunderstorm. highs just in the low 50s today. drying out by the later afternoon. and we're getting set for a very cold morning, but a dry sunday on tap. chris. >> lisa, thanks. new video from squaw valley shows the terrifying moments for one snowboarder after an avalanche buried him alive. this morning, we're hearing from one of the heros who jumped into action. >> so we dug him out and got him sitting up and then his wife came up and, you know, obviously tears of joy right there. >> abc 7 news reporter kernell bernard has more on the frantic ordeal. >> the snow was piling up at squaw valley. five feet is expected by saturday. but all that snow has created some big danger. >> people are crying for help, you have to go help them. >> that's what joe did. he's wearing brown and black jacket.

helping dig out a snowboarder buried in an avalanche in squaw valley. >> about 30 seconds later, people started screaming, yelling at each other, trying to find their kids. >> five people were trapped under three feet of snow. the ski patrol says he was buried for six minutes. one witness crawled 30 yards to reach him and clear the snow from his face. >> we started, like, screaming at him and shaking him and he came to. and wanted to know where his wife was. his first words, actually, were where is my wife. >> the border, named evan, was reunited with his wife minutes later. remarkably, he wasn't injured. four others.were rescued. one person suffered a lower body injury. sadly, the body of a snowboarder was found at squaw valley friday morning. 42-year-old wen yu shong went missing thursday night. the dangerous winter weather claimed the life of a second snowboarder at the china peak resort near fresno.

what triggered friday's avalanche friday isn't known. as for joe, he doesn't feel like a hero. >> it's a good day today. i'm going to go take a sauna and have a cold beer and say a prayer. >> squaw valley will reopen on saturday. there are disturbing pictures of exposed needles on a b.a.r.t. train and people shooting up at embarcadero station. katie encountered the problem on a b.a.r.t. ride this week. she has more information on a new program to address the issue. >> a short b.a.r.t. ride and a sickening discovery. i took this picture of hypodermic needles and cigarette butts strewn across two seats. >> it's unfortunate. it's happening at transit agencies across the country. >> if you see a discarded needle, first of all, don't touch it. secondly, b.a.r.t. wants to know about it right away. go to the intercom in the rear of the train, call the attendant and tell them which car you're riding in. >> we want to address this

quickly as we can before the train gets to the end of the line because we need to clean that right away. >> b.a.r.t. is hiring more people specially trained to clean. it's a treatment, not a cure. these pictures show a man at embarcadero station. he shoots up, then passes out. >> we want to address this in a long-term situation so hopefully we have fewer people with these issues coming into the b.a.r.t. system. >> b.a.r.t. has teamed up with san francisco's law enforcement assisted diversion program, or l.e.a.d. >> they're looking for opportunities to find nonviolent drug offenders and give them a choice that's different from being involved in the legal system. >> i think that that's a phenomenal idea, actually. that it's not just about punishing someone for using the drugs, but, like, actually getting them into a program. >> l.e.a.d. is modelled after a seattle program and funded by a $5.9 million grant. since b.a.r.t. joined in october, 15 drug users have accepted help. katie utis reporting, abc 7

news. a 12-year-old has been booked into santa clara county juvenile hall on felony charges. he's accused of sending text messages to his classmates. threatening a school shooting. >> young, a 12-year-old sending out messages like that stating they're going to kill other students as well as shoot up the schools. we take that very seriously. and his parents, we should be diligent and monitor other children's social media. and police say a shooting threat in the alum rock school district was traced back to a 12-year-old girl. she has not been arrested. the fear of school shootings has students in san jose organizing. a group from prospect high school spent last night getting ready for a march against gun violence. they hope will be thousands strong. katie marzulo has the story. >> daniel, if you can get on that. >> it's friday night, but this is no social gathering.

these prospect high school students are organizing a life-changing event. >> i believe it's far past time for change. i'm very excited and humbled to be a part of this had movement. >> on march 24th, students will take to the streets for the march for our lives, a protest of gun violence in the wake of the mass school shooting in parkland, florida. >> i'm tired of seeing thoughts and prayers. i don't want any more thoughts and prayers. i want legislative change and i want people to not feel like they're not safe any more. >> we want to make it known that our generation is not the generation that's going to stand the by and allow rhetoric to just keep being spewed after a tragic event, like a mass shooting, a school shooting. >> the main event is in washington, d.c. but these students will make sure their voices are heard in san jose. >> on the 24th, if we can see so many people come together to agree there needs to be some kind of change and that we're not doing enough right now, i'll definitely be satisfied in that. >> thousands of people have expressed interest in the march on facebook. 150 students have signed up for

the first volunteer meeting on saturday. >> they could use your help. if you'd like to donate to the san jose march, there's a link on offer website, abc7 news.com. a powerful storm has hit the east coast killing seven people. last night, 700,000 customers were without power across the northeast. streets are flooded or buried in snow and thousands of air travelers are stranded. abc 7 news anchor eric thomas has the details. >> that's a lot of water. >> the massachusetts coastline battered by this bomb sigh loan. a coastal flood warning effects 22 million people. streets were flooded over. dozens had to be rescued, including these children brought to dry ground on a front loader. this more easter's biggest danger is wind and falling trees that killed more than half a dozen people ages 7 to 77.

upstate new york could see up to two feet before the storm ends, combined with powerful winds, it has made for dangerous traveling. at least 3300 flights have been canceled. this flight in d.c. had to abort its landing in the last minute. >> southwest 5875, go around. climb and maintain 2,000. >> the cancellations reached the bay area. >> in almost every other flight i saw was canceled. >> dozens of flights were scrubbed opinion one traveler landed in charlotte, but could not land in washington, d.c. >> i was told they could get me in on sunday, but that's not incredibly helpful for a conference that ends saturday. so they flew me back here. >> this morning, use extreme caution if you have to to drive this weekend. a rare sight, snow among the vines. francis port coppola winery tweeted this video atop its mountain in sanoma county. and there was hail in sausalito coming down pretty hard on sherwood drive.

meteorologist lisa argen is here now tracking the accuweather forecast. we are seeing winter conditions out there. >> that's right. we're not done with this wet weather quite yet. but the showers will be increasing throughout the morning hours. a live look outside from the so he sierra nevada where we are at 19 degrees. tahoe valley airport. so our average statewide snowpack went from 23% to 32% with an additional maybe 4 to 5 feet of snow that we picked up the past couple of days. so it's an improvement, but, yes, sitting about half of where we should be for the rainfall totals. we'll talk about your forecast in detail, coming up. also ahead, you never know who you're going to meet on the red carpet. the unexpected stars of oscar sunday. plus, the wine grazing the tables at the official oscar party.

stars will be out for the 90th oscar awards. >> on the friday before oscar sunday, among the lighting crews and media from all over the globe, the stars walking the plastic covered red carpet look a bit different. >> i am playing sam rockwell and he's one of my favorite actors. so yes, he's terrific. >> rehearsal actors like ron waldren has been standing in since the real celebs since 1984. >> we rehearse the show as if they're not there.

marvel superhero movies that make gazillions of dollars. >> until then, no matter who you are, say cheese. all eyes are on you. abc news. >> our complete oscar coverage begins tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. with on the red carpet. then at 3:30, we have the oscars opening ceremony preshow. at 5:00 p.m., it's the 90th annual academy awards with host jimmy kimmel. francis ford coppola is not nominated for an oscar, but there will be a special coppola's special oscars 90th edition label for the occasion. although coppola owns the winery, the wines were created by the winemaker of his director's cut collection. >> he doesn't wander around while we're doing that work, but archemedies is one of our favorite wines. i've had a thumbs up for that

and i really appreciate >> coppola winery is providing 2,400 bottles of wine for the oscars. that. including several director's cut wines that are sold to the public. if you go to the winery, you can check out coppola's five oscars and movie memorabilia. time now is 6:15. our current storms may be great news for our water situation, but they're accelerating a messy pollution problem in san jose. san francisco bay. rain waters are pushing mounds of trash through storm drains and into swelling creeks and estuaries and from there, into the bay. to help stop the problem at its source, the environmental group "save the bay" is asking officials to take action against caltrans. save the bay blames the transit agency for not tackling the trash problem along bay area freeways before it reaches the storm drains. >> so caltrans is four years out of compliance with requirements to reduce trash. they're violating the clean water act. they're poisoning the bay. and they still haven't said when they're going to reduce the trash on the roads.

>> save the bay is asking caltrans to install trash catchers on storm traps. among other steps. in response, caltrans says it has budgeted $9 million to make improvements over the next few years. it is slow going for those trying to get to the ski resorts around lake tahoe. abc 7 news reporter leslie brinkley made the drive yesterday to gives a firsthand look at what it's like getting to the sierra. >> it was a slow drive to tahoe. caltrans chain controls at only 3800 feet. spinouts littering the i-80 corridor everywhere. >> it quit snowing long enough for it to freeze over. then all the snow that was on the roadway became a sheet of ice, which makes it even harder to remove. >> but once you're up in the mountains, it's breath taking. in this neighborhood by soda springs, quiet streets, big, beautiful flakes falling and snow piled up on balconies and in driveways.

time to shovel. >> you're getting a workout. >> yeah. well, it keeps you young, doesn't it? >> it was too much for this coke truck that drifted off the delivery route and got stuck. according to sugar bowl resort, over 50 inches of white stuff has fallen since wednesday with more on the way tonight. >> this is the kind of snow, the powdery snow that skiers and boarders love. it's been coming down, accumulating fast, and the wind has been picking up. >> so the wind has been blowing the snow all around and into pockets so you find some really deep areas. i found some areas out there that were probably shoulder deep. it's really good out there right now. >> sugar bowl expects big crowds here by sunday, financial relief here from the warm, dry february that stifled business. >> next week, we have another huge storm coming in, maybe 8 fight feet of snow. it will be a great time. >> we hope you get a lot more snow and then we'll have a lot more water for the summer. >> it warms your heart thinking that in the future we're going

to have water for the bay area, water for southern california, wherever. >> a march miracle. up in the sierra, i'm leslie brinkley, abc news. snow and rain winding down temporarily. live doppler, you can see scattered showers over the bay and that rain/snow mix in the higher elevations here. as we go towards the coast, you'll notice a few areas of wet weather from half moon bay. as we go north, this is what we're watching. an area of rain that will push down from the north, across the bay area from 9:00, 10:00 this morning. but in advance of that, we have the wet roadways. we have fog, a half mile to a quarter mile visibility from napa to petaluma. and a live look outside where it is certainly cloudy and cold in the north bay from mt. tamm. 45 san francisco.

it's 41 in mt. view. 39 half moon bay. san francisco, partly cloudy with low 30s from napa. 34 in santa rosa. it's freezing by the delta. 37 livermore, concord. good morning, 47 degrees. a high surf advisory until 9:00 this morning. current wave heights, anywhere from 9 to 12 feet from hospital ray bay and breakers up to 20 feet. certainly dangerous conditions there. and check this out. pretty cool cumulus cloud there from our exploratorium camera. and we will look for the clouds and sun mix later on today. but early on, the wintry mix freezing cold temperatures this morning. tomorrow, even colder as we dry out. and looking at milder conditions monday and tuesday. but talking about that rain line, 9:00 this morning, pushing from sanoma through marin. by 10:00, 11:00, the rain pushes across the bay. you'll notice with the cold

temperatures, looking at that rain/snow mix. certainly a possibility. and then by the later afternoon hours, some sun. could still see a heavy downpour. this is 3:30. we'll call it partly cloudy. then by the evening hours, skies will clear and we're setting the stage for a very frosty night. rainfall potential, anywhere from .01 to .2 in spots. so not much, but certainly enough to dampen the jog or dog walk out there. so keep that in mind. winter storm warning in effect through 10:00 this morning. additionally, 3 to 6 inches of snow around the greater lake tahoe area. as we fast forward into wednesday, this is our next system. into thursday, it doesn't look like much now, but it could strengthen. so we'll watch it for you. highs today on the skool cool side. in fact, just in the low 50s for most of you. 50 today, half moon bay. scattered showers. the chance of a thunderstorm mainly through the early afternoon. then don't, boy, it gets cold out there with low to mid 30s

and 40s. and more light rain approaching highway 1 in the north bay from searanch to ft. rass and hopeland, a mix there. we're watching that line of showers from the north sink south throughout the morning hours. a half mile to a quarter mile visibility from petaluma at that pa th napa this morning. we'll track showers sinking south. by noon time, there's still a possibility of some rain. the possibility of a thunderstorm. but by later on in the day, we're clearing out and the temperatures are cool. just in the lower 50s for highs. looking at a cold and clear night tonight and that sets the stage for several dry days. but the next several days, that includes more rain. we'll track it for you coming you. chris. hollywood's golden night is almost here. this year's 90th annual academy awards is being held at the

dolby theater. danya joins us live with a look at how they're getting ready of the big show. i am so jealous of your assignment this morning. how is it going? >> chris, good morning to you. this is a very fun assignment. we've been out here for a couple of hours now and we are starting to feel that excitement build. we've seen construction crews coming in. that's because they're going to soon be working on this area where celebrities are going to make their rounds. come tomorrow, this will be the red carpet and it will be all about the nominees. >> they've rolled out the red carpet and the heavy lifting is almost complete for the 90th annual academy awards. this year's show is once again hosted by jimmy kimmel live host jimmy kimmel. >> to be asked a second time is much better because it means you did well the first time. "the shape of water" is leading the race for oscar gold with 13 nominations including alongside talked about filmed including "lady bird," "get out."

not panic. that was the message this afternoon at a rally in east san jose. earlier this week, people spotted numerous white vans with tinted windows driving slowly through this target parking lot. a government license plate from the department of homeland security confirmed their fear that i.c.e. was there. the area cleared out. >> we saw seven or eight hours where the streets were empty. there was nobody even walking around. business was down significantly. >> since monday, the rapid response network of santa clara county has received 400 calls from people who have witnessed or heard about i.c.e. activity in their neighborhood or who have had a relative detained. the organization says at least nine people were arrested in san jose. advocates are reminding people of their rights. >> you have the right to have requested an attorney. you have the right to not have your home searched without a warrant. >> i.c.e. confirms its agents made 232 arrests during an operation they held earlier this week in northern california. that enforcement and the local

sightings have been disturbing for the immigrant community. siren is monitoring the group activity every day. they say parents have been nervous about taking their children to school. >> it is very difficult for i.c.e. to be able to be allowed to get on to a school campus. schools are actually considered what's called a sensitive location, and that means unless some very specific exceptions are met, they should not be entering or trying to arrest individuals on a campus. >> i.c.e. says the majority of people arrested were either convicted criminals, had been issued a final order of removal and failed to leave the u.s. or had previously been removed and returned to the u.s. in san jose, jenean delavega, abc news. oakland mayor's libby shaft says she's remaining focused on her job despite failing to warn of immigration raids over the weekend. thursday, the white house said shaft's actions were under

review by the justice department. the mayor said she was trying to give residents time to learn their rights and know their legal options. >> it has always been my intention to be law-abiding, to act within the confines of the law, but also to do what i believe is right. right for my community. >> the mayor says her office has been flooded with angry messages, but she doesn't believe there's a threat to her or her family. she said she's received a lot of suport from people in oakland. richmond police need your help to catch a dog thief. take a good look at this video. the entire theft was caught by the dog owner's home security camera. you can see the male suspect opening the gate to a kennel containing several dogs. he picked up a french bulldog and took off. here is a closer look at the dog, mac, and a look at the suspect. mac is 1 1/2 years old. it happened earlier this week on murdoch street in richmond near the st. cornelus catholic church. if you have seen this dog or the suspect, you are urged to contact richmond police or send

us a message on the abc 7 news facebook page. happening today as we enter prom season, an east bay teenager is helping to make dreams come true for as many girls as possible by holding a free pop-up shop. carly glassen started collecting donated dresses and partnered with the founder of east bay dress day. it's a nonprofit that offered donated prom dresses to teens. you can drop it off at the shop at alamo plaza. if you have a dress, shoes or accessories to donate, drop them off this weekend. the pop-up is this weekend and by appointment only. happening today, baseball season is just around the corner and the san jose giants are hiring for the upcoming season. available positions including concessions, food and beverage, merchandise, field staff and ticket takers. all applicants must be at least 16 years old. the giants home opener is april 12th. the job fair runs from 10:00 until 12:30 today at municipal stadium on east alma avenue in san jose.

happening today, hundreds of people will jump into the chilly waters of the bay in the annual polar plunge. it's a part of the dash and splash benefiting special olympics northern california. the event features a 5k with views of some iconic san francisco neighborhoods. then runners will cool off as they plunge into aquatic park. this year's goal is to raise $235,000. the race starts at 10:00 this morning. the polar plunge is at noon. have to give mad props to all those people taking part this morning. good morning, everybody. we have 25-minute delays at sfo. certainly some fog and wet pavement outside. as we look live at our tower camera, it's 45 in san francisco. lots of low to mid 30s in our inland valleys. 41 for new hayward. fremont and san jose. damp today, more sun tomorrow. and mild the next few days. but still, we're looking at rain

rainfall, the past couple of days, still well below average. i want to show you the rain/snow here around panoramic highway. check it out. not only in the north bay, but we have some snow being reported here on top of mt. hamilton. the then we go west, west of highway 84. there was a little pink here in the higherd west of woodside. certainly not out of the question. the atmosphere is cold enough. we have that moisture and this is where that more organized line is off the coast of highway 1 that will be sinking south throughout the bay area, throughout the morning hours. so as we put live doppler 7 in motion, you'll notice all the activity offshore. and this will continue to move over the bay. so right now, visibility just a half mile for you in napa. quarter of a mile up in santa rsa. two miles down around petaluma. so we're looking at emeryville right now. looks pretty cloudy out there.

temperatures in the mid 40s. 41 at mountain view. san jose, 41. 37 gilroy. half moon bay, this is how wintry it looks out there with a little bit of that rain coming down as the snow mix there as we get to the lower elevations. this is san rafael, you can see the fog. 37 in livermore. so we have that high surf advisory until 9:00 this morning. current wave heights up to 12 feet here around mon thterey ba. this morning, wintry mix with snow levels at 2500 to 3500 feet. freezing cold for some of you this morning. even more so tomorrow pass skies clear late tonight and dry and rm whatter weather on the way including tomorrow, oscar sunday. so looking at about 9:00, you can see the rain line as it pushes across the bay area. still cold enough for the rain/snow mix. but amounts, not too terribly much. but still, with that unstable

we've got airports this morning. with this line of showers moving throughout the bay area, it's really the first part of the day. we can see that wintry mix. we're looking at it in the north bay. mt. hamilton, we're dry tomorrow. slowly we warm up, but by monday and tuesday, springtime with mid and upper 60s. but by thursday and friday, the rain returns. we'll continue to see wet weather, which is certainly good news. we need every bit of it that we can get and our winter storm warning expires by 10:00 this morning. >> and i'm glad you mentioned the airport delays because issues with weather on the east coast, also, impacting travel. >> certainly. >> lisa, thanks and thanks to you for joining us on abc 7 mornings. the news continues now online, on twitter, facebook and instagram.
