if you need help lowering your a1c and blood sugar, activate your within. ask your doctor about once-weekly trulicity. this is abc 7 mornings. >> some somehow flurries are falling this morning in parts of the bay area. just how cold will it get and how much rain will we see this first weekend of march? it's saturday, march 3rd. good morning. thanks for being with us. let's start with a first look at our accuweather forecast. >> chris, good morning to you. it's a 1 on our storm impact scale. we're seeing the effects of that cold air in place and more moisture coming our way. that is bringing in a wintry mix. in the valleys, looking at snow and looking at the possibility of a few thunderstorms.

just a slight chance of that. so as we go in closer around point reyes, you can see that downpour there. further south, and then along highway 1 here across the bay, just heading into san leandro, perhaps, and further south the higher elevations around the peninsula here, around lehonda, you can see the pink and purple mix there. pescadero, rain and mt. hamilton looking at snow. see that rainbow there, sfo, all sorts of weather this morning. looking at temperatures in the 40s within the next hour. and we'll see just a few 50s. it's going to be a chilly afternoon, but dry now and clearing out by late in the day. that's going to set the stage for a frosty night. we'll detail that and look at the week ahead, coming up. chris. >> lisa, thanks. new video from squaw valley shows the terrifying moments for one snowboarder after an avalanche buried him alive.

this morning, we're hearing from one of the heros in action. >> so we dug him out and his wife came up. tears of joy right there. >> the snow was piling up at squaw valley. >> people are calling for help, you have to go help them. >> that's what joe did, in the brown and black jacket helping dig out a snowboarder in squaw valley. >> people started screaming, yelling each other's names trying to find their kids. >> five people were trapped under three feet of snow. that snowboarders was unconscious when they found him. the ski the patrol says he was buried for six minutes. one witness, heather turning, crawled 30 yards to reach him and cleared the snow from his face. >> we started screaming at him and shaking him and he came to.

and wanted to know where his wife was. that's his first words, where is my wife. >> remarkably, he wasn't injured. one person suffered a serious lower body injury. sadly, the body of a snowboarder was found at squaw valley friday morning. the body of 42-year-old wen yu shon went missing. the dangerous winter weather claimed the life of a second snowboarder at the china peak resort near fresno. what triggered friday's avalanche friday isn't known. as for joe, he doesn't feel like a hero. >> it's a good day today. i'm going to go take a sauna and have a cold beer and say a prayer. >> squaw valley will reopen on saturday. abc 7 news. there are disturbing pictures of exposed needles on a b.a.r.t. train and people shooting up at embarcadero station.

katie encountered the problem on a b.a.r.t. ride this week. she has more on a new program under way to address the issue. >> a short b.a.r.t. ride and a sickening discovery. i took this picture of hypodermic needles and cigarette butts strewn across two seats. >> it's unfortunate. it's happening at transit agencies across the country. >> if you see a discarded needle, first of all, don't touch it. secondly, b.a.r.t. wants to know about it right away. go to the intercom in the rear of the train, call the attendant and tell them which car you're riding in. >> we want to address this quickly as we can before the train gets to the end of the line because we need to clean that right away. >> b.a.r.t. is hiring more people specially trained to clean. it's a treatment, not a cure. these pictures show a man at embarcadero station. he shoots up, then passes out. >> we want to address this in a long-term situation so hopefully we have fewer people with these issues coming into the b.a.r.t. system. >> b.a.r.t. has teamed up with san francisco's law enforcement assisted diversion program, or

l.e.a.d. two b.a.r.t. officers patrol looking for addicts to help. >> they're looking for opportunities to find nonviolent drug offenders and give them a choice that's different from being involved in the legal system. >> i think that that's a phenomenal idea, actually. that it's not just about punishing someone for using the drugs, but, like, actually getting them into a program. >> l.e.a.d. is modelled after a seattle program and funded by a $5.9 million grant. since b.a.r.t. joined in october, 15 drug users have accepted help. katie utis reporting, abc 7 news. a 12-year-old has been booked into santa clara county juvenile hall on felony charges. he's accused of sending text messages to his classmates. threatening a school shooting. >> young, a 12-year-old sending out messages like that stating they're going to kill other students as well as shoot up the school. we take that very seriously. and his parents, we should be diligent and monitor other

children's social media. the student attends sylvan wood middle school in san jose. and police say a shooting threat in the alum rock school district was traced back to a 12-year-old girl. she has not been arrested. the fear of school shootings has students in san jose organizing. a group from prospect high school spent last night getting ready for a march against gun violence. they hope will be thousands strong. katie marzulo has the story. >> daniel, if you can get on that. >> it's friday night, but this is no social gathering. these prospect high school students are organizing a life-changing event. >> i believe it's far past time for change. i'm very excited and humbled to be a part of this had movement. >> on march 24th, students will take to the streets for the march for our lives, a protest of gun violence in the wake of the mass school shooting in parkland, florida. >> i'm tired of seeing thoughts and prayers. i don't want any more thoughts and prayers. i want legislative change and i

want people to not feel like they're not safe any more. >> we want to make it known that our generation is not the generation that's going to stand the by and allow rhetoric to just keep being spewed after a tragic event, like a mass shooting, a school shooting. >> the main event is in washington, d.c. but these students will make sure their voices are heard in san jose. >> on the 24th, if we can see so many people come together to agree there needs to be some kind of change and that we're not doing enough right now, i'll definitely be satisfied in that. >> thousands of people have expressed interest in the march on facebook. 150 students have signed up for the first volunteer meeting on saturday. >> they could use your help. if you'd like to donate to the san jose march, there's a link on our website, abc7 news.com. a powerful storm has hit the east coast killing seven people. last night. 2 million people are without power this morning, streets are

flooded and areas buried in snow. abc 7 news anchor eric thomas has the details. >> overnight, the monster nor'easter blasting homes, waves reaching as high as second-story homes. in quincy, massachusetts, children rescued by the national guard. rescues taking place in the buckets of tractors with the water washing out roads. this couple and their dog brought to safety on a boat. this man stranded in his vehicle trying to get out. the winds reaching up to 90 miles per hour. >> incredible wind that you're seeing right now. this is actually coming off the ocean. power outages across the northeast with more than 2 million customers without electricity this morning. in pennsylvania, the downed power lines causing fires and the storm turning deadly with at least seven deaths all from falling trees. highlighting the unexpected danger of some of nature's heaviest debris.

make gazillions of dollars. >> until then, no matter who you are, say cheese. all eyes are on you. abc news. >> our complete oscar coverage begins tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. with on the red carpet. then at 3:30, we have the oscars opening ceremony preshow. at 5:00 p.m., it's the 90th annual academy awards with host jimmy kimmel. famed godfather director francis ford coppola is not nominated for an oscar this year, but there will be plenty of feasting in his honor tomorrow. coppola's special oscars 90th edition label for the occasion. they will only be poured during the awards ceremony and at the governor's ball after party. although coppola owns the winery, the wines were created by the winemaker of his director's cut collection. >> he doesn't wander around while we're doing that work, but archemedies is one of our

favorite wines. i've had a thumbs up for that and i really appreciate that. >> the winery is providing 2,400 bottles of wine for the oscars, including several director's cut wines that are sold to the public. if you go to the winery, you can check out coppola's five oscars and movie memorabilia. it is definitely slow-going for those trying to get to the ski resorts around lake tahoe this weekend. abc 7 news reporter leslie brinkley made the drive yesterday to gives a firsthand look at what it's like getting to the sierra. >> it was a slow drive to tahoe. caltrans chain controls at only 3800 feet. spinouts littering the i-80 corridor everywhere. >> it quit snowing long enough for it to freeze over. then all the snow that was on the roadway became a sheet of ice, which makes it even harder to remove. >> but once you're up in the mountains, it's breath taking.

in this neighborhood by soda springs, quiet streets, big, beautiful flakes falling and snow piled up on balconies and in driveways. time to shovel. >> you're getting a workout. >> yeah. well, it keeps you young, doesn't it? >> it was too much for this coke truck that drifted off the delivery route and got stuck. according to sugar bowl resort, over 50 inches of white stuff has fallen since wednesday with more on the way tonight. >> this is the kind of snow, the powdery snow that skiers and boarders love. it's been coming down, accumulating fast, and the wind has been picking up. >> so the wind has been blowing the snow all around and into pockets so you find some really deep areas. i found some areas out there that were probably shoulder deep. it's really good out there right now. >> sugar bowl expects big crowds here by sunday, financial relief here from the warm, dry february that stifled business. >> next week, we have another huge storm coming in, maybe 8 feet of snow. it will be a great time. >> we hope you get a lot more

snow and then we'll have a lot more water for the summer. >> it warms your heart thinking that in the future we're going to have water for the bay area, water for southern california, wherever. >> a march miracle. up in the sierra, i'm leslie brinkley, abc 7 news. now your accuweather forecast. >> well, not quite a march miracle. we need a lot more. we're about 50% of average for our rainfall totals and the winter storm warning lasting through 10:00 this morning in the sierra nevada. it's still treacherous, so really sunday looks like the better day to head up to the mountains. live doppler 7 right now, tracking the showers. rotating to the bay area. some heavier showers out on the coast. earlier we had a rain/snow mix. around mt. tam, olema and inverness looking at wet weather. taking you to the south,you can see that mix here.

280, redwood city and white side, wet pavement for you. further south into the santa cruz mountains, boulder creek and over to the east some snow there. further to the north around hayward, mixed in with some sunshine. we have some fog. so visibility has reduced all the way from st. martin up towards petaluma and santa rosa. certainly be careful out there. we have a big variety. from mt. tam this morning, you can see some haze there, some sun and clouds. 45 with delays at sfo. 43 at oakland. half moon bay in the mid 40s. a lot of sunshine. looks nice here with those cumulus clouds from emeryville. this is the way the afternoon is going to play out. morning hours with a mix of clouds and sun, showers, maybe a few rainbows.

35 santa rosa, napa. 39 in novato, livermore and fairfield. from the golden gate bridge, get the idea with the low clouds and the cold air in place, we could see that wintry mix today. freezing cold temperatures right around there this morning. but by tomorrow, the clouds clear overnight and we'll see numbers down near freezing, maybe even in the upper 20s. then we'll get into ur warm-up. just a slight warm-up tomorrow, really more so monday and tuesday. as we go through the rest of the day, 11:30, notice we're getting pockets of rain right across the bay here just before noon time. in a line all the way down towards the peninsula. it continues to rotate and shift to the east and south with those areas of snow. 1:00 around mt. hamilton, also up by hopland, clover dale, and by later on in the afternoon, we'll clear out. but still looking at the possibility of some coastal showers. 6:00 tonight. more dry areas than wet and the

rain gives the east bay a pretty sight to see this morning. some areas of the bay area will see another round of rain today. good morning and thanksso much for waking up with us. i'm chris nguyen. we're starting this half hour with a quick look at the weather. hi, lisa. >> hey, chris. certainly pretty out there in spots and in others. we bring in our storm impact scale. it's a 1 today with scattered light showers. we're looking at a wintry mix in some of the higher elevations. 2500 to 3500 feet. with that, main even a rain/snow mix with some hail. as we go through our loop here, you can see the showers approaching the coast from the north to point reyes to aleena and inverness. highway 1, down into santa rosa and 80, san mateo to 880, wet88, weather. we shift westward, highway 1 from pescadero and the santa

cruz mountains. you can see the clouds. it is cold out there with temperatures in the low to mid 40s in the next hour. and looking at the slight possibility of a thunderstorm today, but drying out through the afternoon. >> lisa, thanks. hollywood's golden night is almost here. this year's academy awards are being held at the dolby theater in hollywood. danya joins us with a look at how they're getting ready to the big show. you are our connection to the red carpet this morning. it looks like crews are making progress out there. >> finally, chris. you know we've been out here pretty much all morning. you saw it earlier when there was no one here and now that excitement and buzz that we have been waiting for has finally started. crews are now fixing up this red carpet. as you can see, there are plenty of other media outlets here testing out this scene. tomorrow, it will be all about the nominees. >> they've rolled out the red

carpet and the heavy lifting is almost complete for the 90th annual academy awards. this year's show is once again hosted by jimmy kimmel live host jimmy kimmel. >> to be asked a second time is much better because it means you did well the first time. "the shape of water" is leading the race for oscar gold with 13 nom thagzs, including a best picture nod alongside highly talked about filmed including "lady bird," "get out." >> "shape of water" is a favorite, but "get out" has a good chance to pull a supplies surprise. >> this year, there seems to be a show of support for diversity and representation after movements like so right, me too, and time's up. the average age for the best supporting actress is 55. >> ageism is a huge issue that women in hollywood have been tackling this year. >> among the nominees, kumel nanjani, jordan peel and dee reese, who is now the first black woman ever to get an oscar nod for writing. after last year's best picture envelope mistake -- >> there's a mistake.

catch her live reports starting tonight on abc 7 news at 5:00. abc 7 news was at a rally in the south bay last night where people were protesting i.c.e. operations. hundred hundreds of arrestsly agents took place earlier this week in california and that sent panic throughout the latino community. abc 7 news reporter jenean has the story now from san jose. >> a call to help each other and not panic. that was the message this afternoon at a rally in east san jose. earlier this week, people spotted numerous white vans with tinted windows driving slowly through this target parking lot. a government license plate from the department of homeland security confirmed their fear that i.c.e. was there. the area cleared out. >> we saw seven or eight hours where the streets were empty. there was nobody even walking around. business was down significantly. >> since monday, the rapid response network of santa clara county has received 400 calls from people who have witnessed or heard about i.c.e. activity in their neighborhood or who have had a relative detained. the organization says at least nine people were arrested in san

jose. advocates are reminding people of their rights. >> you have the right to have requested an attorney. you have the right to not have your home searched without a warrant. >> i.c.e. confirms its agents made 232 arrests during an operation they held earlier this week in northern california. that enforcement and the local sightings have been disturbing for the immigrant community. siren is monitoring the group activity every day. they say parents have been nervous about taking their children to school. >> it is very difficult for i.c.e. to be able to be allowed to get on to a school campus. schools are actually considered what's called a sensitive location, and that means unless some very specific exceptions are met, they should not be entering or trying to arrest individuals on a campus. >> i.c.e. says the majority of people arrested were either convicted criminals, had been issued a final order of removal and failed to leave the u.s. or

had previously been removed and returned to the u.s. in san jose, jenean delavega, abc news. oakland mayor's libby shaft says she's remaining focused on her job despite failing to warn of immigration raids over the weekend. thursday, the white house said shaft's actions were under review by the justice department. the mayor said she was trying to give residents time to learn their rights and know their legal options. >> it has always been my intention to be law-abiding, to act within the confines of the law, but also to do what i believe is right. right for my community. >> the mayor says her office has been flooded with angry es, but believe there's a threat to her or her family. she said she's received a lot of support from people in oakland. richmond police need your help to catch a dog thief. take a good look at this video. the entire theft was caught by the dog owner's home security

camera. you can see the male suspect opening the gate to a kennel containing several dogs. he picked up a french bulldog and took off. here is a closer look at the dog, mac, and a look at the suspect. mac is 1 1/2 years old. it happened earlier this week on murdoch street in richmond near the st. cornelus catholic church. if you have seen this dog or the suspect, you are urged to contact richmond police or send us a message on the abc 7 news facebook page. happening today as we enter prom season, an east bay teenager is making dreams come true for as many girls as possible. carly glassen started collecting dresses and partnered up with a founder of east bay dress day. it's a nonprofit that offered donated prom dresses to teens. you can drop it off at the shop at alamo plaza. the free pop-up is happening this weekend and is by appointment only. happening today, baseball season is just around the corner and the san jose giants are

happening today, hundreds of people will jump into the chilly waters of the bay in the annual polar plunge. it's a part of the dash and splash benefiting special olympics northern california. the event features a 5k with views of some iconic san francisco neighborhoods. then runners will cool off as they plunge into aquatic park. this year's goal is to raise $235,000. the race starts at 10:00 this morning. the polar plunge is at noon.

39 in livermore. finally in the sierra, nevada, winter storm warning for another hour. they saw record totals from alpine to squaw last night. 27 to 29 inch totals. there's high avenue larcalanche and the upper mountain will be closed at squaw. still today, you see the sunshine, you see the chairs moving, but it's going to be tough for all the resorts to be open today. more likely toll. freezing cold morning. then we're looking at conditions to get a little wet at the end of the week. so another hour on this winter storm warning. 3 to 6 inches were the totals for the morning hours. this is the way it looks. 11:30 towards 1:00. the rain continues to push across the bay. could see some heavier downpours. then we dry out later on. rainfall amounts anywhere from a couple hundredths to two tenths around the bay. then by wednesday, we fast forward wednesday afternoon into thursday.
