here throughout the day today. maybe an isolated sprinkle in sonoma county. low 50s. plenty of sunshine throughout the afternoon. cool evening so a dry couple of days with a warmup in store before more rain returns by the end of the week. carolyn? >> thank you, lisa. a bay area couple is feeling fortunate to be alive this morning after they were buried by an avalanche while skiing is at lake tahoe. it happened friday at squaw valley. trapping five people under the snow. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard has the remarkable tale of survival. >> we feel fortunate to be alive. >> reporter: evan and kaylen huck from san francisco are feeling incredibly lucky after surviving their first run of the day in squaw valley on friday. k kaylen shot this video moments

before the avalanche hit and they were on the fresh powder. >> i heard a yell, looked back and saw about an eight-foot wall of snow, and seconds later it had hit us. >> reporter: that wall of snow was like a tsunami, overtaking evan. >> i was conscious for about 45 seconds under the snow at first. then i ran out of oxygen and passed out. >> reporter: somehow kaylynn was able to free herself from the snow. >> i was wondering if that was it, if my husband was gone. >> reporter: luckily the tip of evan's ski was sticking out of the snow so rescuers knew where to find him. >> he opened up his eyes and he's looking at me saying, where is my wife? >> reporter: evan and kaylyn were reunited. luckily neither of them were hurt. three others were buried by the avalanche. two of them went to the hospital

with injuries. evan says he now has a new lease on life thanks to those snowboarders who rushed in to help. >> i want to thank them for really being heroes and saving my life. >> reporter: this couple says they're not afraid. they'll be back on the slopes this weekend. cornell bernard, abc 7 news. >> what a miracle. well, an avalanche buried another popular ski area. it happened yesterday morning at mammoth mountain near yosemite. a skier on the chairlift shot this video just before it happened. the ski patrol was working to clear snowy overhangs out of fear they could cause an avalanche and the snow then slid through a populated area. two skiers, six employees were partially buried. there were no serious injuries. >> and at 10:10:i was looking directly at the mountain the avalanche occurred on. one guy was buried up to his chest area, and that was

completely before the avalanche. the snow was very deep. >> mammoth mountain should be open for normal business later today. a croatian sailor stable this morning after suffering life-threatening injuries. the high-risk mission to rescue the man from the middle of the pacific ocean involved three military units, four aircraft and many challenges. abc 7 news reporter lisa alesian has more now from moffet field. >> reporter: this is cell phone video of the military helicopter carrying a sailor with life-threatening internal injuries directly to san jose's regional medical center. the pain staking 13-hour mission is finally complete, and the 54-year-old patient is stable. >> i was really impressed by those guys. they dealt with a lot. >> reporter: it took 25 people to save the man who was on board a large panamanian cargo ship, sailing some 700 miles from california's coast.

>> i would say this is probably the most challenging mission i've had. it was several refuelings in a superstructure about 200 feet in the air. >> reporter: the wind and the distance weren't the only issues. one of the fuel tankers had a malfunctioning hose. it wouldn't retract. the crew opted to cut it off midair. >> we weren't sure in that situation if we were going to have to return to base early, which meant in that case the patient would be at risk if we weren't able to go out and rescue him. >> reporter: that's when the u.s. marines stepped in and showed up with another fully loaded fuel tanker. and after a final four and a half hour flight back to the bay area, this operation is over. and this crew can finally have some down time. at moffet field, lisa amin galatian, nbc news. a woman got to meet the people who helped save her life.

she was at the ucsf medical center at the bay for an event. emily suffered a hemorrhage and had to use donated blood. she met several of the donors in person. >> these people are my heroes. they took time out of their day, to take the process of going to the blood bank and getting screened and taking a couple hours out of their day to save someone they didn't know and that they had no idea they were going to save. >> emily has a family. she has a husband as well as a young boy. she says the entire family is doing well and she now donates blood as a way to pay it forward. well, in just a matter of hours, hollywood's biggest night will take place. the 90th oscars are today at the dolby theater in hollywood. abc news reporter orter orter oe

from the oscars. carolyn, back to you. >> if they are the ones with the envelope, tell me more about the procedures that are in place to kind of prevent what happened last year. >> reporter: so last year there were two price waterhouse cooper accountants who were in charge of giving the celebrities envelopes. those two have been replaced. they've also added a third accountant that will sit with s oscar producers during the show. they went over the what-if scenarios in case it happens, and they're going to double check to make sure the celebrities have the right envelopes before going out on stage. carolyn? >> it sounds like that will do the trick. we'll be watching tonight. thank you, donya. you can get dressed to the nines to watch the oscars tonight. the 38th annual academy friends gala which benefits hiv/aids

a boulevard menlo park restaurant has nearly 16,000 signatures. the oasis bar and grill is scheduled to close this wednesday. abc 7 news reporter katie utis has the story. >> i flew in from fort collins because i just had to come one more time. >> reporter: the johnson family traveled great distances to eat and drink one more time at the oasis in menlo park. >> my daughter came all the way out from fort collins, my son from fremont. they've been here since forever. she was on the bar since she was 10 years old. >> i had to come. one last grilled cheese and beer and call it good. >> it used to be grilled cheese and apple juice. but now it's grilled cheese and beer. >> reporter: a disagreement over the lease led the owners to tell the landlord they were leavin after 60 years. the date is march 7. >> it's like a death in the family. it's really hard to see it go.

three-quarters of a mile napa. boy, it's cold. only one reading in the 40s. that's in san francisco. everybody else in the 30s. oakland 37, as well as san jose 38 to mount view. half moon bay 36 degrees and 34 right here in santa cruz. highs in the low 50s on our beaches. it gets even closer in the north bay with below freeze ng ning i napa, 32 novato. when the air cools, we get some moisture and some of that could freeze and be some black ice on the roadways or elevated surfaces. be careful. keep that in mind if you're driving around this morning. 39 on the delta, 38 in concord, 36 in livermore. here's san jose. partly cloudy and cool today. warmer days tomorrow and tuesday. showers return late on wednesday. so we had a good amount of snow the past week or so. it certainly did add to the

snowpack. but the northern sierra right now at 20% of average. central sierra 36%. you can see down south 29% so it brings the statewide average to about 32% of normal. with those clouds around today, notice the little bit of green perhaps up in sonoma, maybe down around the santa cruz mountains. but other than that, we will be dry and we'll be looking at temperatures a little bit warmer. that sunshine is going to help us out today. but tonight once again below freezing in the north bay. about 30 for you. but then the overnight lows come up a bit with those milder afternoon highs. we'll keep the temperatures just a little bit warmer at night. looking at monday's numbers. in the 60s. near average, a few high clouds. warmer on tuesday. up to 70. a hint of spring in the air, but by wednesday we're getting increasing numbers at the coast. then this system will continue to sink south wednesday afternoon, bringing us some

abc's elizabeth herr reports. >> reporter: the two-day monster nor'easter slamming the bay in georgia, all the way up to maine causing flooding. witnessing the water's force. >> reporter: it's just about 12:00 noon in quincy, massachusetts. that means it's high tide. look at this storm system even as it leaves the area. >> reporter: leaving behind death and destruction. one of the victims just six years old. anthony hamilton was asleep on the top bunk when a tree crashed through his family's home. >> it was just a freak accident in the middle of the night that took the baby from us. >> reporter: more than a million homes still without electricity with power lines down everywhere, including this mess in massachusetts. the storm also proving to be a nightmare for travelers. so far more than 4,000 flights have been canceled and around 7,000 delayed. trains between washington, d.c.

and boston completely shut down for a while with only limited service now restored. elizabeth herr, abc news, new york. heavy snowfall in alaska has opened up a new route for the iditarod. the race started with 67 mushers leading the dogs on its 11-mile route. this year they opened up a southern route which hasn't had enough snowfall to be used since 2013. overall these teams will track 998 miles from anchorage to nome. this year anchorage has nearly two feet of snow. in 2016, just two inches. commuters hoping to ride bart to san jose will have to wait a little bit longer. the projected opening date could be pushed back until next year. bart previously said it wanted to open the new stations in june, but they had issues, including delays in testing that

are stalling things. officials say the opening looks closer to january or even march of 2019. this morning hollywood is mourning the loss of actor david ogden steers. he is best known for playing major charles emerson winchester iii on the television series "mash." he joined shothe show in its si season back in 1977, earning two emmy nominations for his work on the series. steers did voice acting in several disney films, voicing the character of cogsworth in "beauty and the beast" and played characters in "legil"lill stitch" and "pocahontas." steers died battling bladder cancer. he was just 67 years old. we're making sure feverythig on the red carpet is perfect for tonight's big night in hollywood.

this afternoon at 1:30 with "on the red carpet." at 3:30, we have the oscars opening ceremony, and at 5:00 p.m., it is the 90th annual academy awards with your host jimmy kimmel. less than a month after the florida high school shooting that left 17 dead, several celebrities are reportedly planning to use the oscars as a platform to raise awareness about gun control. "people" magazine says a bunch of a-listers will wear an orange pin for gun safety. orange is the official color that's come to be associated with various gun control causes. every town sells orange american flag pins on their website. it's not clear if those are the same pins the celebrities will be wearing tonight. more on the gun control debate coming up on this week. democratic senator chris murphy responds to president trump's shifting stances on this issue. you can watch "this week with

miles an hour, later 15 miles an hour keeping that cool feeling to the air. we have some clouds around, but a weak weather system to the north. you may want to ride over some of those higher elevations, and as that happens, we could see a sprinkle in sonoma county. right now an interesting view from a roof camera where you can see clouds in the city. warmer days tomorrow and tuesday. . as we look at the snowfall over, say, the past three and four days, unbelievable totals. kirkwood leading the pack with anywhere from 6 to 8 feet, and we were looking at totals of two feet overnight that were all-time records for squaw and alpine. you can see the list. just incredible numbers here. definitely by the end of the week we'll add to those totals. we are looking at some of those clouds in the higher elevations.

that's why i can't rule out a slight shower throughout the afternoon with the heating of the sun, but overall it will be a pretty sunny afternoon. so monday we warm up. we'll be back in the 60s near average. into tuesday it's going to feel more like spring. how about upper 60s, maybe even around 70 in parts of the south bay. but we'll have some coastal cooling on wednesday, increasing some clouds and that leads to rain late in the day. by 3:00, sonoma could see some showers around the evening commute and into your thursday morning. the overnight hours, anyway, it looks like we'll still be looking at a few showers. the temperatures cooler again, but at least it will be dryer out there. 51 in half moon bay, 61 in fremont. patchy frost overnight. about 40 near san francisco, and we'll be looking at warmer days on the accuweather forecast as we get towards tuesday. that should be a nice day.

here are the winning numbers from last night's $321 million powerball drawing. 13, 17, 25, 36, 40 and the powerball number 5. nobody picked these numbers, so wednesday's expected to be $348 million. happening today, third baptist church of san francisco will officially become a historic landmark. the church was founded back in 1852 as what was then called the first colored baptist church of san francisco. its longtime pastor reverend avis brown says over the years it's been a spiritual center hosting civil rights leaders, including martin luther king jr.
