good morning bay area. this is abc 7 mornings. >> thank you for joining us on sunday, march 4th. let's start with a quick look at the weather with meteorologist, lisa aragain. >> good morning. temperatures are cold, 20s, 30s for a lot of people. half-mile visibility in santa rosa. otherwise, walnut creek looking at some of those clouds there. 46 in the city. another look here from our exploratory camera where we're still in the 30s from santa rosa to navarro. 40 in napa. 42 in livermore.

from our su tro tower camera, yu can see 36 to 40s. it's below average. looking at temperatures in the mid-50s today but we'll be feeling like spring over the next few days and then rain returns. i'll have it for you in a few minutes. breaking news this morning out of san francisco. the chp is investigating a crash that has left a pedestrian dead. this is a live look from our south beach camera. that accident happened around 5:40 this morning on eastbound interstate 80 near the fifth street on-ramp. the chp says that's where a car hit a woman. it's unclear why she was on the freeway. the driver stayed on the scene. officers say there is no indication of dui. now, this is when that ba that a happened. all lanes were shut down and have since reopened. a bay area couple is feeling fortunate to be alive this

morning after they were buried by an avalanche while skiing at lake tahoe friday at sqauw valley, trapping five people beneath the snow. cornel bernard has the remarkable tale of survival. >> super stoked to be alive. it's an awesome feeling. >> reporter: they are feeling incredibly lucky after surviving their first run of the day at sqauw valley on friday. >> whiteout. say hi. >> reporter: she shot this video minutes before the avalanche hit. zero visibility but lots of fresh powder. >> it was super fun. then i just heard someone yell and look back and saw about an eight-foot wall of snow and then a second later it hit us. >> reporter: that wall of snow was like a tsunami overtaking evan. >> i was cautious for about 45 seconds while i was under the snow and then i ran out of oxygen and passed out. >> reporter: somehow she was able to free herself from the

snow. >> i was inconsolable, i was hysterical, wondering if my husband was gone. >> reporter: luckily the tip of evan's snowboard was sticking out of the snow so good samaritans knew where to dig. watch as his face is slowly uncovered. joe is one of those heroes who dig him out. >> and he opened up his eyes and looking right at me. he says, where's my wife? >> reporter: they were reunited. remarkably, both were not hurt. >> i was under there for four to six minutes. >> reporter: the ski patrol says three other people were buried by the avalanche. two went to the hospital with injuries. evan says he's now got a new lease on life, thanks to those fellow boarders and skiers who jumped in to help. >> i was so impressed by their preparation and training. i want to thank them for really being heroes and saving my life. >> reporter: this couple says they're not afraid. they'll be back on the slopes this weekend. abc7 news. an avalanche buried another popular ski area.

it happened yesterday morning at mammoth mountain near yosemite. a skier on the chair lift shot this just before it happened. the ski patrol was working to clear snowy overhangs in fear they could cause an avalanche. the released snow then slid through a popular area. two skiers and six employees were partially buried. there were no serious injuries. >> and at 10:10 i was on a chair lift looking directly at the run that got -- that the avalanche occurred on. one guy was buried up to his, like, i'd say chest area. and that was completely before the avalanche. i mean, the snow was very deep. >> mammoth mountains should be open for normal business today. >> reporter: and just a matter of hours, hollywood's biggest night will take place. we're talking about the 90th oscars today at the dolby theater in hollywood. abc news looking beautiful, live on the red carpet with what we

can expect. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. thank you for that compliment. the long road that is awards season will end tonight with nominees hoping to take home the coveted oscar statue and the big question here will be, which film will win best picture. the glitz, the glamour and the celebrities all coming together for hollywood's biggest night, the oscars. for the second year in a row. >> if i see people laughing, i'll feel good about it. >> reporter: late night host jimmy kimmel is leading the show with a politically charged awards season with movements like me too and time's up. kimmel saying in an interview with abc's paula faris, he's hoping to set the right tone. >> i do worry about that because i have a tendency to not strike the right tone, in my life. >> this is not a joke. >> reporter: one year after that unforgettable envelope snafu -- >> i'm still not clear on how the wrong envelope got into

warren beatty's hands. color coding might be a nice thing to think about this time around. i'll be honest, it will be funny if it happened again. >> reporter: incredible performances by women this year, shaping up for lead and supporting actress categories but there is a favorite. >> best actress certainly looks like frances mcdormand's award. >> reporter: when it comes to the same categories for men -- >> gary oldman's categories for winning best actor are excellent. >> reporter: while experts have their top picked, the most talked about category, best picture, is still a toss-up. >> "shape of water" is a favorite but not a lock. >> could have a surprise. >> reporter: you may remember, it was the best picture category when that envelope snafu happened. pricewaterhouse cooper is the accounting firm has put new procedures in place to make sure that another mistake doesn't happen again. reporting live from hollywood, abc7 news, back to you,

>> you talked about the me too movement and i'm wondering if those celebrities are expected to make a political statement at the oscars tonight. >> reporter: i was able to speak to the creator of the me too movement. earlier this week she told me she did not know if any oscar surprises or anything planned during the actual ceremony, but just this morning "people" magazine was reporting they've actually heard there will be some celebrities who are going to be wearing orange pins from a nonprofit called every town for gun safety. those are advocates for reducing gun violence, of course, gun safety. we know that comes in the wake of that tragic shooting in florida. >> big issue. thank you very much and we'll look for you tonight. now you can get dressed to the nines to watch the oscars tonight. the 38th annual academy of friends gala benefits hiv/aids organizations. the academy of friends started

good morning, everyone. it's 9:13 on this march 4th. thank you for joining us for abc7 mornings. this is a live look from our walnut creek camera. you see the fluffy clouds dropping no rain today, but what about later this week? you'll have to stick around for lisa and her accuweather forecast. a croatian sailor is stable this morning after sufferig life-threatening injuries. the high-risk mission to rescue the man from the middle of the pacific ocean involved three military units, four aircraft and many challenges. abc7 news has more now from moffett field.

>> reporter: this is cell phone video of the military helicopter carrying a sailor with life-threatening internal injuries. directly to san jose's regional medical center. the painstaking 13-hour mission is finally complete. and the 54-year-old patient is stable. >> i was really impressed by those guys. they dealt with a lot. >> it took 25 people to save the man who was on board a large panamanian cargo ship, sailing some 700 miles from california's coast. >> probably most challenging mission i've had. about five aerial refuelings and challenging hoist, about 200 feet in the air. >> it was windy and blowing over the top of the ship, so it was kind of rough for the pilot to hold the hover. >> reporter: the wind and the distance weren't the only issues. one of the fuel tankers had a malfunctioning hose. it wouldn't retract. the crew opted to cut it off midair. >> we weren't sure in that situation if we were going to have to return to base early,

which meant in that case that the patient would be at risk if we weren't able to go out and rescue him. >> reporter: that's when the u.s. marine stepped in and showed up with another fully loaded fuel tanker. and after a final 4 1/2 hour flight back to the bay area, this operation is over and this crew can finally have some down time. at moffett field, abc7 news. >> more now on tonight's oscars. there's a lot of speculation about just what host jimmy kimmel will be talking about. abc7 news correspondent paula faris sat down with the late night host who's taking center stage at the oscars for the second straight year. >> reporter: the finishing touches in gold, the red carpet rolled out hollywood's biggest night is just hours away. jimmy kimmel is taking on hosting duties for the second year in a row with the current political climate along with the me too and time's up movements, it will be a balancing act for the comic. >> are you nervous at all that

you're going to strike the right tone? >> yeah, i do worry about that because i have a tendency to not strike the right tone, in my life. and so, i -- you know, i do think about that. >> reporter: we've gotten very political over the last year. is it safe to say you're going to get political at the oscars? >> i don't know if i will. i always look at it like this, if i feel i have something that hasn't been said or that i can deliver more effectively than someone else, i will say it. >> reporter: what do you say to your critics that say, who are you to speak out on these issues? >> i'm an american, that's who i am. you know, it's interesting because people have this -- a lot of people are going with this line of reasoning where they say, people in show business shouldn't speak out about politics. and yet, they elected donald trump, the president of the united states. so, i think that argument is

and also with temperatures that are responding to some of that sunshine. so, we're 42 in gilroy. 48 half moon bay. 46 in san francisco and at the beach, only in the low 40s in santa cruz. today about 58. 35 right now in santa rosa. we had some upper 20s, plenty of numbers hovering around freezing in the north bay and with that fog made things a little difficult if you were an early riser to navigate. otherwise, we're rebounding with 46 in concord. 42 in livermore. sfo right now looking at some clouds but no delays. partly cloudy to mostly sunny later on today. warmer temperatures arrive tomorrow into tuesday. wednesday's not looking bad but a weak weather system may bring in a few light showers late in the day. it is looking pretty weak, unfortunately. so, as we go through the hour-by-hour planner, you'll notice we have a little green up to the north of us. that's because that colder air continues to filter down. as it brushes up against the higher terrain not out of the question that

sonoma county could see an isolated sprinkle. most of us and drying, an entirely dry day today and a warmer one tomorrow with numbers near average with low to mid-itself is for your monday. and then for tuesday, this looks to be the nicest or warmest day, a few high clouds, but upper 60s to, perhaps, a few 70s out there. you don't get too used to it because we'll see a return to the cooler weather, the clouds that arrive on wednesday. still, pretty mild inland. as we pick this weather forecast model up into wednesday, notice that this front wants to push on through by the evening hours, but then there's not much to it. thursday we return to partly cloudy skies later in the day. in terms of the overnight lows, it has been frosty. another cold one tonight with numbers in the 30s. near freezing in the north bay. as we get warmer each day, the overnight lows should come up into the 40s. in the north bay valleys and even into our east bay valleys as well. in the south bay today, look for

scott, among the hundreds of people who took the plunge, the polar plunge at aquatic park. the shivering was all for a good cause. the frigid dip helped the special olympics of northern cal. in order to participate, people needed to raise at least $125. the event started with a fun run. i don't see anything fun about that. bargain hunters will be back out in the east bay today. abc7 news was along the oakland estuary for the legendary white elephant sale. it's not just about bargains, it's about finding antiques, collector sets and one-of-a-kind items. admission is free. it starts this morning at 10:00. proceeds help support the oakland museum of california. still to come here on abc7 mornings, a delay for commuters hoping to ride b.a.r.t. to san jose. when the new stations may be open.

welcome back. we're starting this half hour with a look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning. hi, everyone. we're seeing the sun and also the low clouds, towering pretty high in the sky from our sutro tower camera. you can see the numbers in the 40s. 46, san francisco. 42, gilroy. just lost that shot. it was a nice one of mt. tam. 35 in santa rosa. last stop, san jose where you'll see plenty of sunshine with low 50s by everybody. mid-50s for everyone, except in santa cruz, perhaps 62.

we'll be dry but we'll change that by the end of the week. i'll tell you how much we're expecting later. >> thank you. hollywood is mourning loss of david ogden st eir, known for playing on "m.a.s.h." he joined the show in its sixth season in 1967, earning two emmy nominations. he did voice acting in several disney films, including cogsworth in "beauty and the beast" and also played characters in lilo and stitch and pocahontas. he died in his home in oregon after battling bladder cancer. he was 75 years old. we're just hours away from the 90th oscars. here's a live look at the dolby theater in hollywood. the first celebrities will soon be making their way down the red carpet. some of them had a long night celebrating their wins at the independence spirit awards.

new this morning, a santa clara county supervisor will present a proposal to the board this week to ban gun shows. ken jagger says many of his constitute yepts are shocked by by billboards advertising local gun shows. the county fairgrounds currently holds two per year. he says allowing firearms to be sold is opposite of one of the county's main missions, promoting the health and well-being of residents. still ahead here on abc7 mornings, a big donation thanks in part to a hollywood hit. how one bay area community group is going to benefit. and here is a live look from our golden gate bridge camera. 40s around the bay area today and heating up. a warming trend is on the way but there's still some rain in the forecast. lisa along shortly with a full accuweather forecast. fire fighting is a very dangerous profession. we have one to two fires a day and when you respond together

and you put your lives on the line, you do have to surround yourself with experts. and for us the expert in gas and electric is pg&e. we run about 2,500/2,800 fire calls a year and on almost every one of those calls pg&e is responding to that call as well. and so when we show up to a fire and pg&e shows up with us it makes a tremendous team during a moment of crisis. i rely on them, the firefighters in this department rely on them, and so we have to practice safety everyday. utilizing pg&e's talent and expertise in that area trains our firefighters on the gas or electric aspect of a fire and when we have an emergency situation we are going to be much more skilled and prepared to mitigate that emergency for all concerned. the things we do every single day that puts ourselves in harm's way, and to have a partner that is so skilled at what they do is indispensable, and i couldn't ask for a better partner. if you'd have told me three years ago that we'd be downloading in seconds what used to take minutes. that guests would compliment our wifi.

san jose hosts the columbus blue jackets at s.a.p. center. the puck drops at 6:00. the major league soccer season is now under way in the south bay. yesterday the earthquakes kicked off their season against minnesota united at avaya stadium. we have all the highlights in this morning's sports. good morning. well, the san jose earthquakes opened their season against minnesota united fc with new head coach michael starr who came from europe. the quakes hold on to win their opener. the star era off to a great start. 27th minute of the game, danny husen from outside the goal box drills it for first of two goals on the night. 1-0, quakes. one minute later, the cross, vaca with the goal. minnesota roars back for two late goals but quakes hang on to win 3-2 your final. >> i think it was absolutely perfect. i think they followed the game

this morning, feeling the freeze out there. right now, numbers have responded. we're in the 40s. still cool, 49 half moon bay. we're 43 in gilroy. 46, san jose. mid-40s in san francisco. and still some 30s for you in santa rosa as well as navarro. elsewhere, a slow warm-up today and we'll get into a lot of sunshine. the winds not much of a fak toor. you can see the breeze from our roof camera. we'll have a sunny afternoon and enjoy most of that sunshine, at some of these cumulus clouds that will hover over the higher terrain could wring out a sprinkle or two in the sonoma area. otherwise, we're looking at decent afternoon. we were barely at 50 yesterday. warmer for monday and tuesday. showers return on wednesday and the system, unfortunately, looking weaker and weaker. so, this is what we're looking at today. a few clouds around along the higher elevations. as a result, you can see maybe a

sprinkle or two. otherwise, we're looking at more high clouds into monday and tuesday. this is where we sit so far. season to date, the percent of normal pretty much in the 50% range all the way from san francisco down through mountain view. so, certainly we need a lot more rain. doesn't look like we'll see it or get anywhere near average for this time, but we still have that rain by the end of the week and hopefully maybe things will change and turn around for us. but for the near future, we're looking at temperatures near average for a monday and numbers above average for tuesday. this looks to be the warmest day. in fact, we could see 70-degree temperatures. inland spots stay mild on wednesday. north bay, the coast, will cool off as this next front begins to invade the area. it slides to the south. it brings maybe a 0.1, maybe mae 0.2. it's out by thursday.
