to buy political influence and jared kushner's name is coming up again. we have more. >> reporter: the special counsel is reportedly expanding his investigation to include possible influence, not from russia but from the middle east. the new york times reports bob mueller is focussed on this man, george nader, a lebanese-american businessman with close ties to the united arab emirates who had frequent meetings at the white house last year. and met with steve bannon and jared kushner. kushner has faced a barrage of recent headlines, raising questions about possible conflicts of interest with his family company. kushner denies any conflict, but his complicated finances may well have something to do with his failure to obtain a security clearance. while the president remains fiercely loyal to kushner --

>> jared's done an outstanding job. i think he's been treated unfairly. >> reporter: all those headlines seem to be taking a toll. gridiron dinner, trump joked he was sorry he was late, but kushner had trouble getting through security. he also cracked jokes saying he offered jeff sessions a ride to the dinner but that sessions recused himself. >> i don't think it would be good for the president for attorney general sessions to leave but i also think the president has made up his mind in regard to how he feels about the recusal. he feels like that was the first sin, the original sin. >> reporter: on monday, the president is expected to sit down with israeli prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, and later this week, we're expecting more details about the president's announcement on new tariffs on imported steel and aluminum. lots of concern about a possible trade war. david wright, abc news, the white house. >> so many developments there.

"world news now" oscar party bar officially set up here. and when we talk about oscars, you've got to talk celebration. and i've got a classic cocktail that dates back to old movies. if you ever watched "casa blanca". they are always ordering a champagne cocktail. i thought i would show you how to make that. it starts out with these glasses. that was the glass in style at the time. a sugar cube, couple of dashes of bitters goes in and you simply top it with champagne. i'm going use this. and this is the classic champagne cocktail. >> why the bitters? >> the bitters was always in -- actually, the definition of cocktail was a spirit of deminthe and bitters started for medicinal and worked into cocktails. >> you know what's fun about it too.

i'm sure there are a lot of people breathing a big sigh of relief because there were no hiccups, no mix ups. there were light moments, emotional moments, all while honoring the best in movies this year and in year's past. a night celebrating cinema. >> she's been nominated for 21 oscars. >> reporter: starting off with the serious issues impacting hollywood and beyond. >> what happened with harvey and all over was long over due. we can't let bad behavior slight anymore. >> reporter: jimmy kimmel hosting the 90th annual academy awards, the first of the night to focus on the metoo and timesup movement. >> the changes we are witnessing are being driven by the powerful sound of new voices joining together in a mighty chorus that is finally saying time's up. >> reporter: the first oscar going to sam rockwell for best supporting actor. >> i'd like to thank the academy. never thought i'd say those words.

winner, i kind of hesitated. i was waiting for something to happen. but i wasn't surprised by any of the winners. i was struck by how gracious everybody was back stage. it was a celebratory night for everybody we saw. >> leslie, after francis mcdormand's speech, google is busy anszing what is an inclusion writer. can you explain that? >> it is a mandate in a contract that basically stipulates there needs to be diversity with the cast and crew. and actually back stage frances mcdormand said she's been in this business for decades and only learned about this last week. i think we'll see more advocating for this kind of clause be in their contract. >> what kind of impact can this have on hollywood going forward? >> there's been such an outcry for more diversity and better representation on screen and behind the scenes.

and i think when more people are speaking out in support of change, that means that we're going to see it. you saw some of hollywood's biggest stars on national television tonight advocating for more diversity and i think with every year we'll see a little bit more of that come to pass. >> it is some of hollywood's biggest stars but not sure they're the biggest stars in this country itself. and "the shape of water" is a movie they were saying there are more people who will climb mt. everest this year than will have seen that movie. they didn't necessarily go for a popular movie at all. >> no. this was a strange year in that way. there wasn't that sort of, last year we saw with "la la land." it was a big hollywood movie with big hollywood stars and if you haven't seen, you've at least heard about it. this was an art house year. a lot of small budget films being celebrated. i mean, even a movie like "get

out" with such a huge impact was made in 23 days or something like that. these are small films we're seeing celebrated in a really big way. >> made over 23 days and a budget of 4 million and "call me by your name" made $13 million, the lowest for any best picture nominee. thank you so much. >> thank you. >> thanks. and our oscar coverage continues later this half hour and throughout the morning. so keep it here. >> we're going to turn to the russia investigation. reportedly expanding to include possible influence meddling from the middle east. >> "the new york times" says special counsel, robert mueller is trying to figure out if they attempted to buy political influence. sources tell the paper, mueller is focusing on george nade, a

lebanese-american businessman with close ties to the uae. he was a frequent white house visitor and met with the president's son-in-law, jared kushner. the president is so far with standing fierce criticism to slap big tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. the british prime minister said she expressed her deep concerns in a phone call with president trump. the formal announcement of the tariffs is expected this week. advisers say it will not include exemptions for any country. in a late-night tweet the president said sorry, it's time for a change. more severe weather is on the way. before damage from the last storm is cleaned up, the northern plains are getting blizzard conditions right now. that will stall tonight and restrengthen as it reaches the northeast. it will arrive before all power is restored along the coast. kenneth has more. >> reporter: the northeast a mangled mess of toppled trees blocked roads and complete darkness. more than 2 million people lost power.
