on the right, that's today. here's laura anthony with a look at the big picture. >> reporter: it's the place where the california department of water resources conducts its monthly snow surveys for the press. just a week ago here at phillips station there was barely a foot of snow. now nearly three and a half. >> so a very robust storm that we had starting late wednesday and continuing even a little bit up here on into sunday. and that is a huge beast oost tt we had been seeing last week before the storms hit. >> what a difference one storm can make. we were here at phillips station earlier this winter. instead of walking in snowshoes, we in tennis shoes. it's a big change but still not enough. it would take at least two more big storms to bring the season totals back up to seasonal averages. right now, the overall snowpack is just 37% of average.

before 8:00 this morning. trains were halted in both directions for about an hour. there were about 500 people on the train. none of them were hurt. the name of the person struck and killed has not been released. two bay area law makers announced legislation today. it would require bart projects to meet certain standards, like the number of affordable housing units. it also requires local governments to change local zoning rules to streamline the projects. the lawmakers say transit-oriented developments help the environment by increasing ridership and getting cars off the road. the daca deadline is here, and right now it's tied up in court. and up next, a waiti a waitg question. what is the future of humanity?

live look right now from mt. tam and emeryville tower cameras. the sun is out. drew tuma's in for spencer christian tonight. >> it is a gorgeous start to the new work and school week. live doppler 7, not a cloud to be seen overhead right now. a live look, that's on our sutro tower camera. the city of san francisco soaked in sunshine. not a cloud to be seen. a big story in the sierra is the snowpack. take a look at the satellite two weeks ago. we had limited snow state wide, 20% of normal. then we had the blockbuster snowstorm, and look at the sat light image today. so much snow. that statewide bumped up to 37% of normal, a long way to go to getting back to average, but it's a good sign that we've almost doubled. we're in the 60s, a splendid start to the week.

then on wednesday, we're tracking the next system moving in. on the storm impact scale, this is a one. a light system with light showers. less than a quarte inch of rainfall and the winds will remain light. future weather, even for much of the daylight hours we're dry. it's fine until the sun goes down on wednesday, by 9:00 the front is moving through. but notice how narrow that line of showers is. it's a really weak cold front. it's really just light rainfall. minimal impact to the region. by early thursday morning, it's really already out of here. what we're expecting with rainfall, very limited in nature as we go through your wednesday night into thursday, probably less than a quarter of an inch area wide. the accuweather forecast, enjoy tomorrow. it's mild. by wednesday showers arrive late, perhaps an isolated one on thursday. by friday we are dry and all e

headlines at 4:30. the raiders have released aldon smith after a domestic violence incident. officers were called to his home on bush street by an injured woman. she later told tmz that she's his fiance and his parents have taken smith to rehab. laura anthony tweeted from the sierra for the recent survey. there are 28 more inches than a week ago, however, it's only a third of the normal depth. melanie woodrow tweeted about an arrest in a cold case in fremont. coming up at 5:00, we learn how investigators tracked down the suspect. immigration protesters protested across the country for a clean dream act. hundreds marched to city hall. we're live in san jose with more. >> reporter: the rally wrapped

up in the last hour. there were hundreds of students here, fired up. they don't want the issue of immigration to be put on hold. they're using the power of their voice and moving beyond the shadows to be heard. as soon as school let out, these students came to san jose city hall. many in the crowd are either daca recipients, dreamers or have family or representefriend undocumented. they are calling for congress to have a clean dream act. some worry their parents may be deported. >> i'm worried about may my mom. >> reporter: it protected children of undocumented immigrants for a two-year period. the supreme court decided not to hear the issue last week and that means daca recipients can continue to apply, but their

future is in limbo. >> it affects your co-workers, your family members and your friends. it's no longer about politics, a debate between democrats and republicans, it's a human issue that needs to be resolved now. >> reporter: they marched several blocks from city hall here to the federal building where they continued their rally. they say they are going to continue to fight for immigrant rights. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega. abc 7 news. a huge crowd in daca protesters took over the national mall. police have arrested dozens of people. california may soon take page, lawmakers are considering a step to protect businesses from federal interference. last month, the city of berkley declared itself a sanctuary city

for pot users. the move is largely symbolic. it doesn't prevent local officials from assisting federal officials in federal crimes. new measures have been approved for gun safety. the legislation raises the minimum age to purchase a gun to 21 years old and implements a three-day waiting period. some teachers will be allowed to be armed in the classroom on a voluntary basis. this comes following the mass shooting at a high school that left 17 people dead. families have been urging lawmakers to take action. >> what we want to know here is how are we going to make our kids going to school every day safe. that's not just our kids but your kids. >> the amendment on assault-style weapons was voted down. special counsel robert mueller may be expanding his investigation beyond russia to

to go. >> reporter: all of this leading to new questions about the scope of the special counsel investigation. the president continues to sow doubts, tweeting today, why did the obama administration start an investigation into the trump campaign with zero proof of wrongdoing, long before the election in november. wanted to discredit so crooked h would win. the special counsel investigation of course wasn't established until after president trump fired then fbi director james comey last may. lana zak, abc news, washington. the first tv interview with former director james comey since his firing will take place right here on abc 7. george stephanopoulos will ask him about his tenure and the controversial firing last may. you can watch the interview during a 20/20 special, two days before the release of comey's memoir. the pre-trial hearing in bill cosby's case is now under way.

cosby is trying to prevent dozens from testifying at his retrial. prosecutors want to recall at least 19 women to the witness stand. he is accused of assaulting a woman at his suburban home in 2004. the first trial ended in a hung jury. a federal judge today ordered martin shkreli to forfeit more than $7 million in assets in his securities fraud case. the order allows the government to seize shkreli's personal property, including a picasso and a one of a kind album he bought for $2. he gained notoriety in 2015 when he raised the price of a drug used by hiv patients by more than 5,000%. an end of era, saying good-bye to the man behind tower records. and the weather on the east coast isn't over yet. the new storm adding to damage over the weekend.

used her spotlight to shine on all the women of the oscars last night. joining us today is is is is iss she was named "time" magazine's person of the year. welcome. >> one of the biggest moments came when ashley judd and salma hayek got together to really say we need a new path forward. and those three women have been vocal against harvey weinstein. how did you feel when they made that stoematement? >> that was an incredible moment, knowing that they had been black listed and having that confirmed, and then seeing them up there and the montage they introduced was incredible.

that was really a crowning moment. >> you know ashley judd, because you met her at the "time" magazine shoot, right? >> yes. >> you must have been so excited for her. >> it's incredibly vindicating to see these women grabbing this moment and taking it and shaking it for all it's worth. >> not giving it back. >> another moving moment was frances mcdorman's moment. this means that basically, you would insist that there be diversity in your co-stars, in the behind the scenes people. and if you are a big star, you could demand that. do you think that is something that could be useful not just in hollywood but in businesses, tech, even in sacramento where you're lobbyist? >> yes, believe it or not, that's something we already do in the business community. we have different things that we do through procurement diversity to make sure that the people who are actually supplying goods and services for your company are diverse.

i know at my company that goes into contracts that we do with suppliers that they have diverse supply chains going forward. it's great to see hollywood doing that as well. >> so maybe more of that. so let's talk about this. two years ago, it was oscars so white. this year it's me too/time's up. how do we ensure it's not a one-night spotlight in a strive for change continues beyond one night. frances mcdorman made reference to this. >> i think people in power, like ashley judd, like me, continue to talk about this. my group, we said an enough, is launching an app at the end of the month to work on reporting and supporting victims and giving them safe avenues to report. i mean it's important that we all keep kind of pushing along at this, pushing policymakers, pushing at our jobs, pushing anywhere where we have an
