good morning, matt. >> reporter: they say families are spending too much time commuting to their jobs so they're hoping their plan will help solve these issues together. the bill would require b.a.r.t. projects to meet certain standards like the number of affordable housing units and requires local governments to change zoning rules to ad accommodate b.a.r.t.'s plans. they would like to see 20,000 new housing units built around b.a.r.t. stations. the assemblyman points to the parking lots and how empty they are at night. >> it's critical to reduce greenhouse gases, increase transit ridership. >> reporter: lawmakers hope this will speed up some projects like one that broke ground near the

fruitvale station. it was supposed to open in 2008. the "san francisco chronicle" reports it had been 24 years since the plan was conceived and 14 since the 47-unit first phase opened up. police need your help to identify a man they say was peeking over a bathroom stall in a women's restroom in a restaurant on valentine's day in walnut creek. police say the suspect immediately left the bathroom when he realized the victim saw him. anyone who can identify this man is asked to call walnut creek police. the san mateo sheriff's office needs your help solving a deadly shooting on 101. te victim is identified as 53-year-old gilberto martin jr. of san francisco. his body was found in the parking lot of gray whale cove and half moon bay. investigators say that martin had been shot. they're looking to talk to anyone who was driving on the

highway that night of february 13th. a fremont police department has solved a 32 year year cold case. >> a man is charged in connection with a double murder from 1986. abc 7 news reporter melanie woodrow has the story. >> reporter: fremont police say 57-year-old david emery misch was serving time for a homicide in alameda county. now misch has been linked to a double homicide of michelle xavier and jennifer >> reporter: on february 2nd, best friends were found dead along the side of mill creek road a little more than a mile east of mission boulevard. a motorcyclist riding by discovered the women's bodies and called police. they had been shot and stabbed. neighbors remember it well. >> every time we drive by, we think about it. >> reporter: xavier's car was located six miles away. the women were last seen at a

nearby convenience store. despite persons of interest and interviews, the case temporarily went cold. it was suspended until 2016 when a position was created in the crimes against persons unit to focus on cases like this one. evidence had been processed for dna in recent years with misch going from being a person of interest to the main suspect. >> the statement made me believe he was a big part of the case. >> reporter: misch is expected to be arraigned on two counts of murder this week. >> relief. it was nice to know they finally got the guy. >> the families were very thankful, very understanding. >> reporter: police say the victims had no contact with misch prior to the crime. melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. 5:05 now. a new development in the battle over a controversial statue in san francisco. the sculpture is called early days and it is officially coming down. the arts commission voted unanimously to have it removed. native americans and other supporters are applauding the decision saying that the statue

is racist and demeaning. it shows a native american man at the foot of a spanish cowboy and a catholic missionary. it is part of a movement that depicts the founding of california. other statues will not be affected. new this hour a major international investigation happening right now in the uk after a former russian spy and his daughter were both found critically sick. the spy was actually found in a southern england shopping mall. his daughter was found unconscious in the city outside of london. president vladimir putin's spokesperson says russia doesn't know anything. according to british media, the 66-year-old spy was convicted on charges of spying for britain. he was then sentenced in 2006 to 13 years in prison, and that spy was actually freed in 2010 as

during the evening hours thursday night. so thursday morning's commute will be wet. now for thursday afternoon, pretty quiet. friday quiet. i'm starting to pull back on the chances of rain for saturday, sunday, and monday. get a dry weekend before the rain comes in tuesday. so far we're looking good for the tuesday morning commute. i want to take you to a couple slow spots in the east bay, just some minor issues so far. we have a three-car collision westbound 580 on the shoulder. as we know it does not take much to slow down that drive out of tracy. some of this probably due to the typical volumes starting to build. 16 miles an hour. 27 miles an hour approaching the altamont pass. a little slow as you head out the door. just past palomares, the counter commute side of traffic, if you're head to going to sunol. northbound 101 and 880 starting

to fill in. no major problems for the south bay today. san francisco has unveiled a new center design to keep the mentally ill from winding up on its streets. the san francisco healing center is located at st. mary's medical center. it includes 54 beds which more than doubles the city's capacity. the patients will include people with diagnosis severe enough to place them under short term conserveship. it helps in tough cases. and, again, let's not lose focus. this is about giving the people on our streets the help they need so they can get on to better lives. >> besides dignity health, they are receiving support from the public health department and usf which contributed nearly a million dollars to renovate the facility. the san francisco school district hit the 1 million mark when it comes to free meals in the classroom. abc 7 news at hillcrest where the millionth meal was served. the superintendent dr. vincent

a mother and son from san francisco died while skiing in tahoe. this happened just feet from where they were staying. >> they had just finished their last run of the day at kirkwood mountain resort. amy hollyfield live at the boy's school in hayes valley where they are mourning him today. amy? >> reporter: it's going to be a tough day here, natasha, as they learn of the deaths, come to terms with them, and try to comfort each other. 50-year-old olga perkovic and her son aaron goodstein were buried in three feet of snow after their last run of the day at the kirkwood ski resort. they had just made it back to their condo. we have a picture of it from a real estate website. snow slid off the roof the building and buried them. aaron was a first grader at french american school in san francisco's hayes valley. a spokesperson says they are all just in shock. >> we were devastated to learn of aaron and olga's passing and extend our deepest sympathies to

the goldstein/perkovic family during this difficult time. >> reporter: the sheriff's office shared some pictures to show just how much snow the area was dealing with over the weekend. it led to an avalanche at squaw trapping five people in the snow. they all survived but a snowboarder who was reported missing during a blizzard at squaw was found dead. olga was skiing with her two other children and her mother. the school will be offering support to the students as they grieve the loss of their classmate, aaron. reporting live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. a breakthrough between the talks between north and south korea. they say they will have a moratorium. north korea has also reportedly said they have no reason to have nuclear weapons if they can get a security guarantee.

no word on what the guarantee would entail. the south korea delegation just went there. they held talks with the north's leader, kim jong-un. they returned home and south korea's president was not there although we're hearing word there could be a summit between the two korean leaders some time soon. we expect to learn much more later this morning. two men from stanislaus county are in jail, suspected of possessing explosives inside their hotel room. chp officers along with a uc berkeley bomb squad searched the room of jeremy guy and his father donald guy. they're both from river bank. and that's a photo of police arresting ronald guy. the chp was tipped off to the hotel room early sunday morning after jeremy guy was pulled over. bomb making materials were found inside his car. and this morning police are working with aldon smith's attorney. the former oakland raiders linebacker is accused of

domestic violence. his fiancee told tmz she is the victim. they got engaged about two weeks ago. they say smith attacked her at his home in san francisco. he faces four misdemeanor charges. smith's fiancee said her parents helped check him into rehab. the raiders have now released him. a man being called a hero for stopping a woman who stabbed people on a greyhound bus heading from vegas to oakland and on to oregon. police say the suspect boarded in bakersfield and she suddenly grabbed a 3-year-old putting a knife to her threat and threatening to kill her. she stabbed the girl's mother who tried to fight back. a bus driver and two passengers jumped in. they were wounded. nathan of santa cruz is one of the men who stepped in. his wrist and finger were badly cut. >> trying to just stop her from hurting the mother and the daughter any more than she had already tried and done. the adrenaline was going. i just didn't want her to hurt anybody.

>> the woman stabbed herself in the neck. she is undergoing surgery. the 3-year-old was not hurt and her mother is expected to recover. developing news, a former trump campaign aide is making headlines for saying the special counsel in the russia investigation may have incriminating evidence on the president. >> sam nunberg says he is angry about a request to appear before a grand jury and turn over thousands of e-mails. he even alleged the president knew about a 2016 trump tower meeting between his son and a russian lawyer. these claims came in a stunning series of interviews. the white house is denying nunberg's accusations. >> he hasn't worked at the white house, so i certainly can't speak to him or the lack of knowledge that he clearly has. >> even though nunberg said he would not testify, which could land him in jail for contempt of court, he says he now will find a way to comply with the special counsel. and just in, president trump denying reports of chaos in the

white house after several key people have left recently. he's also saying that there could be more turnover some time soon. look at this tweet he sent out during our newscast just a few minutes ago. it says the new fake news narrative is that there is chaos in the white house. wrong! people will always come and go, and i want strong dialogue before making a final decision. i still have some people that i want to change because i'm always seeking perfection. there is no chaos, only great energy. he's actually sending out a lot of tweets this morning. this one pretty notable. back to you. 5:35 now. florida lawmakers approved new measures that allow some teachers to carry guns in schools. the legislation raises the minimum age to purchase a gun to 21 years old. it also implements a three-day waiting period. some teachers will be allowed to volunteer to undergo law enforcement training and be armed in their classrooms. the action comes following last month's mass shooting at a high school that left 17 people dead. families who lost loved ones

have been urging lawmakers to take action. >> what we want to know here is how we're going to make our kids safe going to school every day and not just our kids, all of your kids. >> one thing that is not in the bill is a ban on assault and assault-style weapons which many of the students have been asking for. a san francisco woman has raised thousands of dollars to send food and water to teaches on strike in west virginia. head of the united educators of san francisco start add go fund me page to raise money to deliver pizza to the 3,000 teachers on strike. teachers there are among the lowest paid in the nation and they're demanding a 5% raise. today is the ninth consecutive weekday students are out of school. the go fund me raised more than $17,000. it's getting close to $17,500 at this point. that's way surpassing the $15,000 goal. money will goes go to the three unions on strike. let's start talking about

president trump indicated he might exclude canada and mexico from his steel and aluminum tariffs if a new nafta deal can be worked out. he's called on mexico to it do more to stop the flow of illegal drugs into the u.s., so we'll see if anything changes. >> thanks to the 50th flight of spacex, the falcon 9 rocket lifted off from cape canaveral at 9:33 our time. it's the size of a school bus and is the largest geostationary satellite ever flown by spacex. the first falcon 9 rocket launched in june of 2010. a fascinating story of the day, you're living in a place with a shared kitchen and bathroom. >> this is a dorm for adults.
