it has been a difficult morning for young students at a san francisco elementary school after their classmate died in a freak accident near lake tahoe. right now there are grief counselors at french american international school in san francisco's hayes valley. first graders dealing with the death of their classmate and his mother who were buried by snow outside the tahoe area. they had a condo there. suddenly died when the snow hit them. abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield is at the school right now. amy? >> reporter: good morning.

this community is grieving. parents could be seen wiping their eyes after they exited the school dropping their kids off this morning. 50-year-old olga perkovic is described as a very involved parent here at the french american international school. and they say she will be very missed. she and her 7-year-old son aaron go goodstein were buried by three feet of snow that fell from their condo. school administrators say this will want be a typical day at school. they will not shy away from talking about aaron's death. >> the classroom is a safe space to stalk about grief. we have counselors in place that were affected by this tragedy and plan to have support throughout the week as our community processes this. >> reporter: parents also had what administrators are calling a safe room this morning where they could gather and talk about the tragedy. aaron and olga were on the ski

trip with olga's other two children and her mother. the sheriff's department there is calling this -- classifying this as a tragic accident. reporting live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> thank you. our thoughts with that family. new this morning, attorney general jeff sessions planning to make a major sanctuary city announcement tomorrow in sacramento. details have not been released quite yet. he will be appearing at a california peace officers association event. this comes after the white house and the director of i.c.e. said the department of justice was reviewing oakland mayor libby schaaf's actions after she warned residents of an immigration raid. this morning police are working with aldon smith's attorney to arrange his surrender. the former oakland raiders linebacker is accused of domestic violence. police say smith attacked his fiancee saturday night in their home in san francisco. he faced four misdemeanor

his parents will check him into rehab. the raiders have released him. police in contra costa county need your help to identify a man who they say is peeking over a bathroom stall in the women's rest room in a restaurant. it happened on valentine's day at scipalini's pizza in walnut creek. this suspect you see here immediately left the bathroom when he realized he had been seen. the cost of your morning commute may soon go down if you ride muni. today smfta will consider a plan to reduce some fares, especially those who rely on monthly passes. they also plan to introduce a day pass to lure more riders. it's part of a budget planning process and the board is also considering increasing fees for everything from residential parking permits to parking citations. the agency needs to close an anticipated $23 million gap for its upcoming budget year.

it's a first for the dmv. a shared autonomous shuttle is now allowed on public roads. abc7 news reporter matt keller is live in san ramone where he just witnessed history in the making. matt? >> reporter: hi, jessica. not only did i witness it, i was on the first shuttle to go on public roads here. now, check this out. this is the really important thing here. this is the california license plate that allows it to go onto public roads. this ez mile shuttle is big enough to have six people standing up and six people sitting down. so, come along for a ride with us. i want to show you the video my photographer took about 20 minutes ago here in san ramone. we were on the first shuttle to drive onto the public roads. why is this a big deal? this is the first time the department of motor vehicles has given a license and granted permission for a shared autonomous vehicle to travel on public roads in california. for the past year, it's only been tested in private parking lots. now you'll be seeing the ez mile on public streets within the

bishop ranch business park. the goal is to have the ez mile shuttle help with the first and last mile connection to local transportation hubs and your workplace. >> the idea is door-to-door service to get to the b.a.r.t. so you can use transit. >> reporter: they are licensed to test two shuttles right now. eventually they'll double that and test four. they have a goal of getting 97 of these on the road by the year 2020. reporting live in san ramone, matt keller, abc7 news. >> thank you. amazing technology. north korea says it is ready to have heart-to-heart talks with the u.s. on their relationship and possible denuclearization. and the shocking news came during a rare high-stakes meeting with south korea today. abc's terry moran has more on the developing story. >> reporter: a potential major breakthrough on the korean peninsula. south korean officials returning from talks in north korea including a direct meeting with kim jong-un announced first the

north korean regime wants to talk directly with the u.s. government to discuss denuclearization on the korean peninsula and normalizing u.s./north korean relations. during negotiations north korea will halt additional nuclear and missile tests. third, the north has pledged it will never use nuclear or conventional weapons against south korea. finally, a direct hot line will be set up between the leaders of north and south korea and another summit meeting will be held in april. the south korean delegation was told north korea believes if military threats are removed, they have no need of nuclear weapons. the u.s. government will be wary of these promises, suspicion kim jong-un is trying to peel south korea away from its alliance with the u.s. and mindful of north korea's long history of deceit on this issue. make no mistake, what happened today rrts represents an extraordinary new chapter in the tense standoff between u.s. and north korea and even, perhaps, a hopeful chapter. terry moran, abc news, london.

the european commission is preparing retaliatory tariffs on imports of u.s. goods. bloomberg first reported this news, all of it comes in response to president trump's threat to new international tariffs on steel and aluminum. republican leaders are asking him to back off, but he says he won't. president trump indicated he might exclude canada and mexico if a new nafta deal can be worked out. he called on canada to treat american farmers better and for mexico to do more to stop the flow of illegal drugs into the u.s. developing news now out of the united kingdom where a former russian spy and his daughter are in the hospital after mysteriously falling ill. the pair passed out in a park in a rural town in the southern part of the country. police say they came into contact with an unknown substance. the man was sentenced by russia in 2006 for treason. he then sought refuge in the united kingdom after being pardoned during a prisoner exchange in 2006. investigators are promising to

get to the bottom of this. >> i say to governments around the world, that the knno attemp to take innocent life on uk soil will go either unsanctioned or unpunished. >> there are eerie similar layers to a 2006 case. a former russian spy was killed when his tea was spiked with radioactive mru nome yum. the mayor of nashville resigned after pleading guilty to stealing money from the city while carrying on an affair with her body guard, sentenced to three years procebation and a fine. she engaged on the affair on city-paid trips. when she first adds minuted to the affair in january, she said she planned to stay in office. she denied the claims of using taxpayer money but today pled guilty to felony theft of property. >> my time as mayor concludes. my unwavering love and sin seen

thank god! thank god! >> stunning video shows airline passengers wrestling a woman to the floor after she tried to open a door midflight. happened on the skywest fly operated by united from sfo to boise yesterday morning. the woman is now in the care of idaho health officials. prosecutors have not yet decided if they'll press charges.

a 5-year-old girl is recovering after she was nearly strangled after falling from a ski lift in southern california. the girl slipped off her seat in the lift over the weekend at bear mountain resort. her ski instructor grabbed her by the hood of her jacket, held onto her for over a minute. the girl was caught by bystanders with a tarp. the girl's mom and dad have no plans to suit but they want the resort to do something proactive about this incident. the san jose city council has narrowed the location for a village of tiny homes for the homeless to two places of land in the city. this is an artist rendition of what the tiny homes will look like and the locations are a site just southwest of the overpass connecting highways 280, 680 and 101. and the other location, a vta construction staging area along mabury road in coyote creek. it's expected to open by the end of the year. there's a new development in the battle over a controversial statue in san francisco.

the sculpture called early days is officially coming down. the arts commission voted unanimously to have it removed. native americans and other supporters are applauding the decision saying the statue is racist and demeaning. it shows the native american man at the feet of a conquering spanish cowboy and catholic missionary. the sculpture is part of the pione pioneer monument cluster near city hall. other statues will not be affected. now your monday morning report. whole foods rolling out in san francisco and parts of the east bay and south bay. free two-hour delivery applies to orders over $35. one-hour delivery is available for $8 extra. the service has been available in austin, dallas, cincinnati and virginia beach for nearly a month. amazon bought whole foods last year. target is raising its minimum starting pay for workers for the second time in less than a year. they say it comes after seeing a bigger and better pool of

hey, good morning to you again. did you see that sunrise this morning? it was pretty nice. unfortunately, i couldn't capture it. if you did, #abc7now. i did capture the clouds rolling through. this is the warm air coming through that will make it a little warmer today and tomorrow. so, now those clouds are gone and we get to enjoy full-on sunshine. let's talk about what it's going to do. a few more passing clouds heading into the afternoon hours. definitely warmer today. clouds will come back tonight and that will keep us milder than this morning. the weekend, that's trending dryer. so, for your highs today, look at those 70s out there, san jose, morgan hill,hill,hill, about 65 to 69 for the rest of us. first we'll take a look at sunny san jose. one of the warmest spots. low to mid-60s with coast being the warmest at lunch. if you could take your lunch and head over there, what a great time to be at the coast.

4:00, everything kind of reverses. the bay and inland become the mid-60s and coast becomes the low 60s. a sea breeze will kick in. low to mid-50s at 8:00. by midnight, we'll have temperatures in the 40s. we'll pretty much stay in the 40s tonight. there's a few 30s out there, maybe lake port, petaluma, some of our cooler spots. definitely going to be a nice start to the morning tomorrow. now, as far as what's going to happen tomorrow night into thursday, we've been tracking the storm for a while. we kept it at a one because of the nature of the scattered showers on the light side. here's the low i've been tracking. look around. smaller satellite lows that will rotate around that and that's why we'll have waves of showers coming in as that low draws near. tomorrow night at 5:00, everybody driving home on dry pavement. by the morning hours things get wet with scattered showers becoming more widespread during the morning commute. they break off and become a little more isolated headed toward the evening commute. here's the new part of the

forecast. they linger around friday morning. so, we could get about a quarter to half inch of rain. now, if that new twist comes in and they do linger around to friday morning, we could possibly get a half inch to a quarter of an inch into south bay and santa cruz mountains. there's aylingering chance of a shower saturday. sunday is the driest day. that's the day i've taken the rain out of the forecast. for the most part, monday there's just scattered showers. we have a much stronger storm that will be with us tuesday, wednesday and thursday next week. we'll get nickel and dimed the next couple of days but it will take the 70s back out of the forecast. >> so the rain comes back. >> yes. >> hopefully is it brings my voice back, too. >> maybe bring some cough drops. it will rain cough drops for you. >> thanks, mike. you may be happy to have your mother's eyes, but it could be better for you to look more like your dad. >> yeah. >> that's according to a new study out of new york. finds children who resemble their fathers at birth are more likely to spend more time with their dad and, in turn, be

newscast, abc7 news at 4:00. coffee with a corgi thing but twerking inside your coffee is another thing? this could be the craziest thing created in a super cute way. the butt corgi is the masterpiece of daphne tan. they have raised the bar with this cafe treat in singapore. you have to travel pretty far to get it. it's really something to see, though, when you put it in slow motion. look at that. almost looks like the corgi is doing a little dance for you. >> kind of like those car commercials with the -- with the -- the kia commercials. yeah, anyway. that's interesting. >> there you go. that's cute. >> did it say how much it was? >> no, but it's probably quite expensive to get that little experience. >> is she wasting her talents on coffee? she could move up to something bigger and better. >> i like it. >> i like it, too, no doubt. >> may be a good day for coffee tomorrow, right? it's going to cool down.
