abc7news.com and the abc7 news app. we'll send out a push alert once the attorney general begins to speak. tonight new signs of mourning for a san francisco mother and her son killed in a freak accident near lake tahoe sunday night. they were headed back to the lodge when snow fell on them and killed them. the mother and her 7-year-old boy were going through difficult times. >> reporter: flowers arrived at the san francisco home where olga and her son aaron lived. a poster made by children was also left by children at the entrance of the home, it was made out to her husband and their two remaining children. the mother and son were killed shortly after skiing at kirkwood mountain resort. as they reached the condo complex, they skied underneath a roof covered with snowy according to alpine county

sheriff's office slid from the roof burying them. they were found a few hours later. >> the classroom is a safe space to talk about grief for our students and we have counselors in place in all of the classrooms that were affected by this tragedy and plan to have support throughout the week as our community processes this. >> reporter: the 50-year-old's mother had been worked at a biotech company in emeryville but left last summer. the ceo of the company told abc7 news she will be missed by all. in a statement, josh hoffman wrote, olga was a valuable member of our community, a trusted a visor and most importantly a trusted trend for myself and others. she is survived by her husband david and children, sophie and daria. meantime a 5-year-old girl is recovering after she was

nearly strangled after falling from a ski lift in southern california. the girl slipped off her lift. her ski instruct for grabbed her hood and held her there for more than a minute. the mom and dad don't want to sue, but do want the resort to do something pro active about the incident. here's a live picture from south lake tahoe. sandia is here with a look at the timeline. >> you will notice that there is no rain showing up on our radar right now, but that will change as we head into tomorrow night. take a look at what's going on. as you mentioned, this time it's going to be different. this storm system is going to be coming in more from the west as opposed to the north, so it is a milder system, higher snow levels. not expected a whole lot of rain, it's a light, 1 on the storm impact steal, through

staying briefly when he surrendered this morning. here's how aldon smith rooked this morning when he was booked on domestic violence and other challenges. the former 49er and now exraider linebacker, sun rendered after having been on the run since saturday after -- here's how the police radio dispatcher described what happened. san francisco police issued a warrant for his arrest but could not find him. then yesterday, smith's fiance told tmz that smith entered a rehab facility after reaching out to her parents for help. she told tmz she still loved him and that she and her family wanted to help him through his issues.

a source says smith has successfully worked with his attorney to get him surrender so he could be processed on the pending charges. he was released from the 49ders in 2015, after a string of arrests, the last one involving a hit and run, he then joined the raiders, but was suz pented for a year after substance abuse violations. the raiders say they have now released smith. according to tmz, aldon smith's friends were saying he was drinking every day and it got so bad they were afraid he would drink himself to death. smith reportedly drank two bottles of tequila on saturday, the day that the domestic violence incident occurred. a monterrey county boy remains in a san jose hospital after being stabbed in the chest

by a 12-year-old classmate. it happened at north monterrey county middle school in castroville. he could face attempted murder charges now. a life flight flew the injured boy to santa clara medical center. an international human rights organization says social media giants facebook and twitter are making efforts to police terrorists and hate groups, but more work needs to be done. the annual digital terrorism and hate report card from the simon weezen thal center gave facebook a b plus, twitter a b minus and google a c plus. sky 7 caught this great video of the san francisco fire boat shooting a scream of water about 200 feet in the air at the lower deck of the bay bridge

hotly debated plan to ban gun shows at the county fairgrounds has moved forward, but not without concerns from critics. all of this comes in the wake of the high school shooting massacre in florida. >> reporter: today in santa clara county, the board of supervisors voted to explore an ordinance that would ban the possession of sale of firearms on county property which involves the fairgrounds. these students from prospect high school were encouraged by the board's decision. >> the local government are seeing and taking initiative to make change and not just offering thoughts and prayers. >> reporter: ken yeager who proposed the ban decided to take action. >> it was the first step we needed to take in this process to make sure that the board was in agreement, and i was very heartened by that unanimous vote. >> reporter: but the santa clara libertarian party says that

focus should be elsewhere. >> we should protect students by teachers who are qualified and willing actually carry gun. >> reporter: to date we are unaware of a single instance or violence occurring at a gun show on santa clara county property. any argument that california gun shows are under regulated lacks in factual support and without merit. >> our right too be safe in our communities and in our schools supercedes any other right. >> reporter: the county's legal department will now look at who or what should be exempt from the ordinance and the proposal itself should be ready for ordination in may. after more than a year of planning, the city of san jose has narrowed down two possible sites for tiny home communities for the homeless. the housing department eliminated another possible

location east of hellier avenue because it's part of a future land trade with santa clara county. so it was a no-go. the remaining spots are west of the 280, 680 and 101 overpass and the one-acre plots on coyote road. officials say a final decision on the location should come sometime this summer. california is the sixth tightest rental market in the country. state wide rental vacancies accounted for 2.4% in 2017, but in 20 16, there was a 2.6% vacancy rate. the average vacancy rate is 7.9%. a milestone for a san francisco -- signed legislation

coast in the low 60s, downtown san francisco 64. so temperatures will be at or a little bit above normal for this time of year. in the north bay, santa rosa, 68, vallejo, napa, a little more cloud cover there in the east bay. 64 in oakland, 69 freemont. head inland and definitely signs of springs, with upper 60s in concord, antioch and brentwood. tomorrow night around 5:00 p.m., the rain begins to approach. so your morning and your afternoon commutes are fine. for the evening hours by 7:00, you start to see the rain in the north bay, and really by account 9:00 p.m., we hours of thursday morning, the showers will spread across the rest of the region, and this will continue into friday morning's commute. it's going to be hit or miss showers right through 8:00 a.m., and then another batch coming through friday morning, this one will bring us more light rain

filed in california so far this year, two involved a person actually attacking a robot car. both of those incidents happened in san francisco according to dmv. the first happened on january 1, when a screaming pedestrian crossing against the light struck the car's bumper damaging a tail light. and another autonomous vehicle was stopped behind a taxi when the driver got out and slapped the passenger side window. the obama's rules banning the -- the u.s. fish and wildlife service says imports on big game animals like lions and elephants will now be considered on a case-by-case basis. the decision comes months after president trump called elephant hunting, quote, a horror show and suggested he would keep the ban in place. when we come back, the statue hiding under the sheet in sonoma university. >> it was made for peanuts.
