and we do say good friday morning, everybody. president trump and kim jong-un going from trading insults to trading invites. an historic face-to-face meeting in the works. >> the invitation for north korea to discuss its nuclear program was delivered to the white house last night by south koreans. the meeting would be the first between a u.s. president and a north korean leader. arlette saenz has the latest from washington. a lot to get to today. >> reporter: there certainly is. good morning, diane and kendis. a few months ago, the idea of president trump and kim jong-un sitting down in the same room together was unimaginable. if this meeting takes place, it will be the first time a sitting u.s. president and north korean leader meet face to face. it's a stunning diplomatic overture in a decades-long nuclear standoff. at the white house, a top official from south korea delivered a message from the

north. kim jong-un promised to stop his nuclear missile tests and wants to meet with president trump. >> and he expressed his eagerness to meet president trump as soon as possible. >> reporter: the white house says the president accepted the invitation. mr. trump tweeted, great progress being made. but sanctions will remain until an agreement is reached. meeting being planned. north korea is said to understand that u.s. troops will continue joint military exercises with the south. the surprise invitation caps off months of threats and insults. >> north korea best not make any more threats to the united states. they will be met with fire and fury. like the world has never seen. >> reporter: while kim ramped up his missile tests, the president responded with derision. >> little rocketman. >> reporter: now, the two clashing leaders could be meeting by may. >> let's find a way to work this

thing out. it's going to be very difficult. you can't trust the north koreans. but this summit arrangement, this summit meeting is a bold step. >> reporter: one big question is, where will this meeting take place? so far, the white house has not offered any hints. only saying it will occur at a time and place to be determined. diane and kendis, the guessing game starts now. >> we're so curious. oh, to be a fly on that wall. arlette saenz in d.c. for us. thanks, arlette. >> our thanks. plenty of countries will be seeking exemption from the president's tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. he signed an order for the tariffs surrounded by workers in those industries. the 25% tariff on steel and 10% on aluminum won't take effect for two weeks. the president is leaving himself room for changes. >> i'm sticking with 10 and 25 initially. i'll have a right to go up, or down, depending on the country. i'll have the right to drop out countries or add countries. we just want fairness.

>> for now, mexico and canada are exempt. a nonpartisan study suggests the tariffs will result in 150,000 jobs lost in the first year alone. the president's former campaign chairman will head to trial in july. paul manafort pleaded not guilty in a virginia court. to tax and bank fraud charges. he's accused of laundering $30 million through offshore accounts in an attempt to shield it from the irs. manafort faces a separate trial in september. he'll wear two ankle monitors ahead of both of the trials. and former trump campaign aide sam nunberg is scheduled to testify before a grand jury today in the russia investigation. you might remember during a series of interviews this week, nunberg said he would defy a subpoena from special counsel robert mueller. he's apparently changed his mind. now nunberg says he will comply. it's unclear whether he will seek to legally limit his testimony. florida governor rick scott is meeting with the families of the 17 people killed in the parkland school shooting, seeking feedback on a gun safety

bill approved by state lawmakers. he agrees with raising the minimum age to buy rifles. he opposes a provision to arm teachers. as he contemplates whether or not to sign the legislation, the sheriff's office has released some of the police radio transmissions and desperate 911 calls that came in as the gunman opened fire. >> marjory stoneman douglas high school is being shot up. >> is being shot up? are you at the school? [ whispering ] >> i can't hear you. are you at the school? [ dial tone ] >> in the meantime, the public defender for the alleged shooter says his not guilty plea was entered prematurely. he's now changing it to no plea at all. the first lady, melania trump, welcomed one of the survivors of the parkland shooting to the white house. she posted photos and videos with 16-year-old kyle kashuv who was also introduced to the president.

mrs. trump said the students' message of unity inspires us all. britain says a total of 21 people have been affected after a nerve agent attack. on a former russian spy. 66-year-old sergei skripal and hi daughter are in critical condition. the first police officer on the scene is listed as serious. british officials are promising a strong response once they determine who was behind the attack. the russians are denying any involvement. time now for a look at your weather on this friday morning. ♪ millions of americans are digging out from a nor'easter that is blamed for two deaths. snow and debris from downed trees are clogging traffic on the roads and railways. nearly 1 million customers are still without power. another big storm is taking shape moving from the south to the mid-atlantic on sunday. some forecasters say that system could move north and become another nor'easter on monday. others predict it will head out to sea.

who is seen here pushing johnny rush's face into the asphalt before he shoots him with a stun gun. lush was accused of jaywalking. officer hickman resigned in january. the other officer, who stood by and watched, does not appear to have been disciplined. at least not yet. last night, residents turned out in force for a heated town hall meeting. directing their anger towards the police chief, tammy hooper, who says she acted quickly once she saw the video. >> we immediately took that complaint. pulled the body cam video. and, um, obviously, upon watching that, recognized it was a very egregious -- very egregious and violent episode. >> now, chief hooper blames the delay in acting on a supervisor who told her that she had reviewed the incident but not the video. at the meeting last night, hooper offered to resign she says if that solves the

problems. some expensive office doors have interior secretary ryan zinke facing some scrutiny about sending. his department is upgrading three sets of double doors in zinke's office at a cost of nearly $140,000. a spokeswoman says zinke was unaware of the project until it was brought to his attention yesterday. she says he agrees it's a lot of money. this comes after the department of housing and urban development ordered a $31,000 dining set for ben carson's office. he says he was as surprised as anyone that it was made in the first place and wants the order canceled. america's credit card debt has reached an historic high. a new study by walt -- wallethub finds that u.s. consumers have passed the $1 trillion mark for the first time ever. one analyst says it reflects consumer confidence. a resent survey appears to show the opposite. with nearly half of americans not having enough cash to cover a $400 emergency. and it might finally be time for us to grow up. toys "r" us is getting ready to

♪ ♪ 41 years after bringing luke skywalker to life, mark hamill has finally been awarded a star on the hollywood walk of fame. he was surrounded by "star wars" alums, including harrison ford and george lucas. thousands of fans also jammed the streets. check that out. ford received his star 15 years ago. he joked there were a lot more people that showed up for his star. a little sarcasm. a ship full of passengers were enjoying the final hours of their bahamas cruise when word went out that a woman had fallen overboard. some passengers say the woman was sitting on a balcony railing, possibly taking a selfie, when she lost her balance. the ship's crew launched into action. and after an hour of searching the pitch black waters, rescuers finally found her. >> i'm still in shock that they were so quick and how they responded and that they found her in what i would consider to be a short period of time, given the circumstances and the conditions. >> just amazing.

norwegian cruise lines says the woman was in stable condition. the ship continued on to port canaveral, arriving about an hour behind schedule. the u.s. has posted a travel warning for a popular mexican resort area just ahead of spring break season. the warning centers on playa del carmen. near cancun and cozumel. and is itself a popular destination. it's unclear what prompted the warning. officials say it's not linked to last month's ferry explosion, which injured at least two dozen people. investigators now looking into that incident have reportedly found evidence of a homemade explosive device. as many as 2100 frozen eggs and embryos at a fertility clinic in cleveland may have been damaged by a refrigerator malfunction. university hospital says the temperature in one of the liquid nitrogen storage tanks warmed up to higher than acceptable limits. the clinic is bringing in independent experts to test the viability of the tissues.

positions go, half of them help students learn english. >> this is a contentious meeting and many aren't happy. matt keller is live for us in san jose. >> reporter: good morning, reggie and natasha. they have the same problem that a lot of other districts have in san jose and silicon valley have. declining enrollment. evergreen took action last night. >> it's with a heavy heart that we have to do this. >> reporter: the evergreen school district voted thursday night to lay off classified employees, about 20 positions, most of them part-time. ten of the employees are instructional assistants who help students learn english. one employee says there are 2600 english learners in the district and only 12 instructional assistants. >> am not going to stand here and ask you why are you doing this. i ask you how. how can you take away support from these kids to learn and
