good morning. just a few seconds away from 5:00 a.m. thanks for joining us. >> a few seconds away from the weekend if you multiply those seconds by -- >> a lot. >> you're never more than seven minutes away from your accuweather forecast. >> hey, mike. >> hi. >> let's talk about the weather. we'll start with the fog. it's thick around oakland. so 580, 880, 980, 13, 24, any of those interstates and highways, your commute. watch oupt. it's going to be a little tricky as you head through this area. we'll see if there's other areas. look across the north bay. couple hundred feet in petaluma. santa rosa up to two miles. the fog is spreading just a little bit. it will be around the entire commute. here's a look at my 12-hour planner. it won't be as humid this afternoon. we'll see a little less sunshine. but still, mid-50s at the coast. low to mid-630s around the bay. mid-60s at 4:00. nice evening. no need for the umbrella.

here's alexis. >> good morning, mike. i'm talking about the fog trafficwise this morning, too. here's a live look a the golden gate bridge. you can barely see. i think those are the zipper trucks. a work crew on the shoulder. a dense fog advisory issued by chp around midnight for golden gate bridge. if you are coming in from the north bay, increase the following distance on a day like today. overall, very light so far. westbound 580, tracy to dublin. the only drive time in the yellow. 33 minutes. 680 out of dublin and it looks great through the south bay as well. in the green, just 15 minutes. >> now a live desk update. >> right now, walnut creek police are investigating a murder of a 60-year-old man. investigators found that victim just before 7:30 last night with life-threatening injuries on la cassie avenue. that's not far from the b.a.r.t. station. medics tried to save him but couldn't. he died on scene.

a 34-year-old man was detailed. at this point, unclear if the two men had any connection. back to you. >> jeffrey, the gir after may be a relic of the past. >> toys "r" us could be in more trouble than we thought. reports say the company may be forced to liquidate all of its stores. amy hollyfield live in concord. bad news, amy. >> reporter: hi, natasha. it sure is. it's a sign that they were optimistic. this is a brand new toys "r" us store in a new shopping center here in concord on diamond boulevard. yet, it sounds like things have gone from bad to worse for this company. sources told bloomberg news, the company is preparing for liquidation. the emeryville store is one of several in the bay area that are closing. the san rafael, pittsburg and a couple of in san jose are also on the list. they had filed for bankruptcy in september and got a loan to work

on turning things around. then here we have this new store in concord. but the holidays were not kind to toys "r" us and the company has not been able to be find a buyer or restructure its debt with it lenders. toys "r" us is not commenting on this development. this has a domino effect for the toy industry. it could be a rough day for stock prices for toy makers. mattel and hasbro started dropping in late trading. so it will be interesting to see what happens when the market opens this morning. reporting live in concord, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. now, a live desk update. >> u.s. secretary of state rex tillerson saying this morning a dramatic change of posture by north korea's leader has led the president, president trump, to agree to a meeting with north korea. and he said it was strongest indication to date of leader kim jong un's desire to talk.

although he does say don't expect formal negotiations any time soon. take a listen. >> in terms of direct talks with the united states and you asked negotiation social securitiment we're a long ways from negotiations. we need to be clear eyed and realistic about it. the first step and i've said this before, to have talks. have some kind of talks about talks. because i don't know yet until we are able to meet ourselves face to face with representatives of north korea, whether the conditions are right to even begin thinking about negotiations. that's kind of the current state of play. tillerson made the comments while on an 8-day trip to africa. his newest comments as well are saying that no surprise that president trump does want to speak to north korea. it's something they've been thinking about for quite some time.

tillerson and president trump did speak early this morning a little bit more about the plan. so we'll continue to follow he story. back to you. >> that certainly is interesting. jessica, thank you. abc 7 news reached out to local and north korea experts to get their reaction on this. philip yun, a senior adviser for north korea policy under the clinton administration says many thought the u.s. was on the way to a conflict. he said this new p talk is infinite any -- >> never get too high or low. given what's happening as little as two months ago, high tensions, some discussion about even a unilateral strike, the bloody nose strategy, it's a stunning development how quickly things have happened. >> so you just heard secretary tillerson sort of update the status of all this. earlier president trump was told -- we're told, accepted the invitation and hoped to meet with kim jong un by may. it sounds like they're backing off of that date a little bit.

family and friends are mourning the death of an 18-year-old girl killed in a deadly hit and run in vallejo. police are still searching for the suspect. reporter, lisa amin gulezian has the story. >> she's been my heart. she's been my child. >> her grandfather raised her from the time she was a baby much he's heartbroken and has questions for this man. vincent fitzer. >> why? what made you do this to my granddaughter? >> police believe fitzer was the one behind the wheel of this suv when it rolled backwards down this street hitting her as she walked on the sidewalk. this is surveillance video taken moments after the crash. the driver is seen running away. >> i'm angry. i want him punished. he shouldn't have left my sister in the street for dead like that. >> fitzer has an extensive criminal past. 31 charges, in fact, including car theft and burglary. the 18-year-old was on the phone

with someone when she was hit. >> we friends. >> investigators call fitzer a transient who has family in vallejo. they're not the only ones hoping he'll come forward. >> we thank you that you're going to touch his heart, dear lord and bring him forth. >> she was the youngest of eight and planned to join the navy after graduating from high school. in vallejo, lisa amin gulezian, abc 7 news. the b.a.r.t. director is going to discuss the shooting death of a man at a meeting. as we reported at midday, dozens of people stormed a meeting demanding answers yesterday. 28-year-old shaleem tindall was shot and killed by a b.a.r.t. police officer on january 3rd. they claim their son was wrongly killed and want him fired. he was responding to shots fired

outside the west oakland b.a.r.t. station. he found two men struggling, screamed for them to show their hands, then fired three shots. he returned to duty. he's got threats to his life. driving cars in the east bay, lyft announced a new partnership with a secure testing company for vehicles. you're watching video at the 5,000 acre site in concord. been driving in palo alto for the past year now. goe men continue will help speed up the introkduction of the self-driving cars to the public. never more than seven minutes away from your accuweather forecast. >> i overlaid the fog layer on the north bay. no worry to worry about freezing fog. it's really thick around petalu petaluma, rohnert park and novato. it tapers as you head to the south. it's pretty thick in napa and american canyon. a little less thick in vallejo.

got about 44 in guerneville right now. temperatures running in the upper 40s to low 50s on the bay shore. cupertino, 46. lafayette, 45. right now in tracy and brentwood and fairfield, low 50s. you can see some of the fog trying to take over the bay bridge. right now, it looks pretty nice to get across there without having to worry about the reduction in visibility. as far as the roads, i'm going to put caution out there for your commute plan because of the foggy spots this morning. cool in our mass transit areas this morning. mild this afternoon. it will be foggy if you're taking the ferry. let's take a quick look at the peninsula today. 50 this morning at 8:00. by 10:00, we're going to be around 56. 60 at noon and mid-60s from 2:00 to 4:00. grab a coat to keep you warm at 56 degrees at 8:00. here's a look at the east bay on the other side. you can see a touch cooler. 58 at noon. low 60s from 2:00 to 4:00. mid-50s as you head through the evening hours.

victims of sexual assault. they arrested javier gines for sexual acts with young girls. the first girl who is under 18 years old. he sexually assaulted her multiple times eight years ago. the second victim says the same thing happened to her five years ago. investigators say he had access to several children through family, friends and volunteer work in the community. in the first look from dwchlt gmas the teen is changing his not guilty plea in the florida shooting. >> we're hearing for the first time some of the 911 calls. here's kendis gibson. >> in first look, the frantic calls of 17 students and teachers being gunned down. >> 911, what is your emergency? >> hi, my daughter texted me from school. she's at marjory stoneman douglas in parkland and says there's an active shooter. >> one call from inside the school. >> marjory stoneman --

forecast. temperatures today, coolest in half moon bay. 61 degrees. 62 in san francisco. most of us, 65 in san mateo. san jose in the south bay going to be the exception. along fairfield, trying to reach up to 70 degrees. tonight's temperatures, mid to upper 40s in most neighborhoods. san francisco the warmest at 51 tiegs. here's a look at what's going to happen. we wake up, mostly cloudy. watch the clock there as i zoom out and show you where the bulk of the rain will be at 6:00 tomorrow evening. it's going to be south of the monterey and heading towards the mont prerey bay. it will make it to the south bay. that's it. that's the big change from yesterday. it will be drier for most of us. as we head through sunday, you can see the moisture pushes up into the north bay. just random, light showers during the afternoon and early evening hours. the weekend is not a washout. look at the rainfall tote apples. you have to go to sunday to get a couple of hundredths of an inch at the most.

let's look at the accuweather seven-day forecast. lots of chances of rain but not a lot of rain. set your clocks ahead. we lose an hour of sleep saturday night into sunday. 1 on the storm impact scale. looks like the heaviest rain right now is tuesday with a moderate storm. let's turn it over to alexis. still light this morning? >> yeah. crickets over here in the traffic center this morning, mike. we're not complaining. really the only spot we're seeing red on traffic maps is westbound 205 at 580. getting out of tracy. overall, not terrible. no blocking issues. down to 15 miles an hour for six to search miles there. the bay bridge toll plaza looking good. a stack-up in a few cash lanes on the fastrak and other lanes looking good. drive times looking good. southbound 101 across golden gate, six minutes. nine across the bay bridge once you get through the toll plaza.

san mateo bridge, wide open at 13 minutes. four people suspected of stealing thousands of dollars from a trans national card scamming operation. officers made the arrests over the past few months. the suspects used cloned debit cards, gift cards to steal money from around the east bay. they found several skimming devices used to steal credit card numbers at gas pumps. state senator may no longer give his trademark hugs. an investigation found four instances of unwanted hugging or touching that made staff members and lawmakers feel uncomfortable. senators didn't think it was enough to warrant harsher consequences. he's warned that another incident could lead to expulsion or suspension. he says he never meant any harm. 5:20 now. next the 7 things to know as you

they will hold a rally in support of common sense gun control laws. organizers say that they stand as one with the parkland, florida, community seen here with a vigil. it runs from 4:00 until 7:00 at san ramon city hall. another student protest in the south bay. abc 7 news was in san jose when hundreds of alum rock students walked out of school with their parents yesterday. they're fed up with the way they're mismanaging the school system. the u.s. securities and exchange commission is investigating the handling of bond funds intended for new construction. the san francisco planning commission voted to block a condo conversion that made headlines. according to the -- peter owens, the building owner, misled the department by failing to disclose he evicted a woman last year. she died after suffering a stroke. canada refused to sign off on the conversion of her apartment into a condo. owens arlgd that she didn't live

>> reporter: the evergreen school district is losing money because of declining enrollment. faculty and staff wanted -- the school board went another direction. >> need to step it up and show your support. as the pointer sisters say, we are family. i've got all of my people with me. >> the decision came after hours of public comment. the evergreen school district voted to lay off classified employees. about 20 positions. most of them part-time. ten of the employees are instructional assistants who help students learnening bisher lisch. the students will still get the help they need. >> what was more important to me than my job was the services to the kids. >> there are resources available. our teachers are certified to provide this education to english learners. again, we're not eliminating all of the folks with these positions.
