the tracy area. checking the speeds. up to 21. the closer to altamont pass, one. slow spots. not many folks on the roads. we'll look at the overall conditions in a few minutes. >> thank you, alexis. walnut police are investigating the murder of a 60-year-old man. investigators found the victim just before 7:30 last night with life-threatening injuries on lack si avenue. not far from the b.a.r.t. station. a man was detained and is being questioned. it's not clear if the men had any connection. new at this hour, secretary of state rex tillerson says president trump's decision to talk to north korean leader kim jong-un is no surprise. he made that comment during a visit to african nation. look at this interview we have. >> in terms of the decision to engage with president trump and kim jong-un, that's a decision the president took himself.

school. the board of directors will discuss the shooting death of a man killed by a b.a.r.t. police officer at its next meeting. as first reported at midday, dozens of people stormed the meeting demanding answers. shaleem tindall was shot and killed by a b.a.r.t. officer. this happened january 3rd. they claim their son was wrongfully killed and want matu'u fired. this shows him responding to shots fired outside the west oakland b.a.r.t. station. again, on january 3rd. he found two men struggling. sdreemd screamed for them to show their hand and fired two shots. he returned to duty two weeks after that incident. he's now on desk duty because of threats on his life. it looked like a usb drive. but instead, they're a new toeb product made a by san francisco-based company. >> high schoolers are using these to vape. the devices are made by the

company jewel. they can accommodate as much nicotine as cigarettes. according to lincoln high school students in san francisco, the device design makes it pretty easy to use right on campus. san francisco unified school district is working to educate students. >> go to the bathroom and do it or bend over under the table and take a puff. >> they want our young people to know that electronic vapor product are not safe. >> in an e-mail to us, a spokesperson for juul writes, we condemn the use of our product by minors and it's illegal to sell to minors. this morning, i'm tracking more about that jobs report that was just released a few moments ago. i mentioned it in the last hour. it shows a hiring surge last month. it's actually the biggest in a year and a half. 313,000 jobs were added nationwide in february. it's a surge that's actually

video shows you -- as terrifying as this is, we're told everyone is okay. this accident happened last month. the emergency medical services authority says it's decided to release the video now to highlight the importance of making way for emergency service vehicles. home depot will pay nearly $28 million to settle a lawsuit claiming it illegally disposed of hazardous waste, also destroyed documents containing sensitive customer information. this is the result of a case brought by the alameda county district attorney and d.a.'s from across the state and california's attorney general. the civil complaint als that the illegal behavior took place at 300 stores across california. home depot says it will follow the rules from now on. four men in custody suspected of stealing thousands of dollars in investigators say the suspects used cloned debit cards as well as gift cards to steal money

from at ms around the east bay. police found several skimming devices used to steal the numbers at gas pumps. santa clara county supervisor wants to earmark $5 million to build monuments to recognize women and their accomplishments. chavez was among several leaders speaking to the young women in san jose about female empowerment yesterday. chavez says the time is now to recognize women for their accomplishments throughout the country. p. and county as well. san jose was known as the feminist capital in the world in the '70s when janet gray hayes was elected the first female mayor of a major american city. look at the traffic this morning. how is the fog affecting people? >> you know what, not enough people to make a difference at this point. everybody taking the friday off and making it a three-day weekend, reggie. here's a live look at emeryville. that fog continues to get thicker further into the morning. a lot of fog in the east bay this morning. some really dense areas in the

pressure. almost to the hawaiian island. that's why it's going to take a more southerly track. 8:00 tomorrow morning, waking up mostly cloudy with fog maybe not as widespread as this morning. there will be fog out there. mostly cloudy throughout the day. notice down well down to the south around big sur. that's where the rain is. it starts to come northward. the san mateo bridge overnight and 7:00 sunday morning, it's about gone. we'll have scattered showers for the afternoon sunday into the evening hours. very random. look at the rainfall totals as we go all the way up to 11:00 sunday. couple of hundredths of an inch at best. most of that is going to fall once the sunsets saturday. all right. let's talk about tahoe. man, a great dumping last week. plenty of nice fresh snow there. groomed to your liking. this weekend, just a light afternoon next saturday and a light amount sunday. it's not going to be hard to get up there or get home. they'll have a lot more snow coming as we'll have a lot more

toys "r" us could be in more trouble than we naught. reports that the company p may be forced to liquidate all its stores. amy hollyfield has the story from concord. >> reporter: it is a brand new toys "r" us in it's a new shopping center. it looked like they were feeling good about the future. now maybe not. compare this new store to this one in emeryville. it is set to close along with stores in san rafael and pittsburg and in san jose. and now sources are saying the company is making plans to liquida liquidate. the turn-around it was hoping for hasn't materialized. toys "r" us declared bankruptcy in september, got a loan to work back. the holidays did not bring the sales they needed. sources say the company hasn't been able to find a buyer or reach a deal with lenders. the sources on the story are anonymous saying this information is private, they're

6:129 in the morning. we're almost at the weekend. welcome to friday, march 9th. >> look at this weather. it's pretty gray and a lot of fog outside. you want to be careful. never more than seven minutes away from your accuweather forecast. >> hi, mike. >> unfortunately, farther away from the weekend. can't really see it from the grayness out there. let's jump right on in. here's an area where dangerously low visibility will plague you as you commute. highway 12, 37, american canyon road. you can see dry creek road there and there's other areas where the visibility is almost zero around petaluma, oakland and half moon bay. that will continue through the morning commute. looks like summer out there almost. the sales force tower is punching through the fog from sutro tower. temperatures in the mid to upper 40s. a little warmer this morning. my 12-hour planner becomes hazy sunshine. low to mid-60s at noon. mid-60s at 4:00. comfortable evening. low to upper 50s at 7:00.

>> what's going on alexis? >> not much, mike. only spot is the bay bridge toll plaza. metering lights on for just over an hour. nothing other than the metering lights and the toll booth slowing you down. typical delays into the maze for friday. little lighter for the rest of the workweek. westbound 4, antioch to concord, not ternl. in the yellow at 20. just hearing about a new issue on the richmond-san rafael bridge. we'll check on that coming up next. now the live desk update from abc 7 mornings. this morning, we're still tracking a deadly crash in the east bay. oakland police right now are investigating a hit and run that happened on san pablo avenue between 33rd and 34th streets. you see in our video that there's heavy police presence in the area. we are told san pablo avenue is closed in both directions right now.

we're waiting to get more details about this hit and run and the victim and the vehicle involved. we have reached out to oakland police. the newest dee thals will come as soon as we get them. layoffs are coming to a san jose school district. the decision came down to let 20 positions go. half of them help students learn english. >> it was a contentious meeting. many are not happy. matt keller is live in san jose for us. >> reporter: good morning. the evergreen school district has the same problem that a lot of other districts in san jose and silicon valley have. declining enrollment. last night, evergreen school board took action. >> it's with a heavy heart that we have to do this. >> reporter: the evergreen school district voted thursday night to lay off classified employees. most of them part-time positions. ten are instructional cyst tants who help sthu dents learn english. 2600 english learners in the district and now only 12 instructional assistants.

>> what was more important to me than my job was the services to the kids. >> there are resources available, our teachers are certified to be able to provide this education to english learners. we're not eliminating all of the folks who have the positions. >> reporter: the district spokesperson said there that the students will get the help they need. faculty and staff are consolidating campuses. matt keller, abc 7 news. thank you, matt. it is a stunning turn of events in a nuclear standoff. >> falking about the surprise announcement that president trump will meet face to face with north korean leader kim jong-un. a south korean official extended the invitation on behalf of the leader yesterday. he agreed to stop nuclear tests. >> to meet president trump as soon as possible. >> the white house says the president has accepted the

invitation. as of this morning, there is no set date or venue for the meeting. it is supposed to take place by may. it will be the first time a sitting american president and a north korean leader meet face to face. >> 6:34 now. a new twist in the battle over sanctuary city laws. some lawmakers are calling on the white house to hold officials responsible -- his administration should withhold federal grant money from jurisdictions like san francisco. he made the remarks at the beginning of a cabinet meeting and called out oakland mayor libby schaaf for warning of an i.c.e. operation. calling it a disgrace. more reaction to tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. china calls it a serious attack on international trade. the french economy minister says there are no winners from a trade war. canada and mexico are temporarily exempt. but canada will press washington to drop them. steel businesses in the bay area are seeing their prices go up

15% in just the last month. >> any businesses like us will continue to profit and make a little more money from all of this. it's the same with the gas and oil industry, the same kinds much things happening. when they start to raise prices because of gas shortages, they end up making more money in the end. >> the president signed off on the tariffs yesterday. they're going to take effect in two weeks. happening today, an east bay community will add its voice to the growing chorus of people demanding gun control. san ramon will hold a rally for common sense gun control laws. organizers stand as one with the parkland, florida, community. another student protest in the south bay. abc 7 news was in san jose when hundreds of alum rock union school district students walked out of school with their parents yesterday. they're rallying in front of the district office. they're fed up with how the board of trustees is mismanaging

the system. u.s. securities and exchange commission is currently investigating the handling of bond funds intended for new constructi construction. voting to block a condo conversion that made headlines when a 100-year-old woman was evicted from the building. according to the examiner, tenants argue that peter owens misled the planning department by failing to disclose he evicted her last year. she died a month later after suffering a stroke. canada refused to sign off on the conversion of her apartment to a condo. owens argued she didn't live there for years. he can appeal the decision. help identifying this bank robber. it shows a man walking into the wells fargo bank on december 16th. he threatened the teller, took handfuls of cash and ran. you can see here he wore a gray hoodie and a warriors baseball cap. his face was hidden behind a mask.

reports of a disabled vehicle blocking a lane. i'm not seeing any delays in that direction. once we head to the westbound side, approaching the toll plaza in the richmond area, little backup approaching the bridge. overall, not bad. lot of fog as mike and i have been talking about. here is golden gate bridge traffic. coming towards us, headed southbound approaching the toll plaza. chp has a dense fog advisory in effect for golden gate. we'll look at fairly light p travel times coming up. an updated plan that will reveal the project needs more time and more money to complete. that is the latest issue with the bullet train. yesterday biologist said that they're concerned that the plans will cause the local extinction of wildlife in the santa cruz mountains. that's according to our media partner, the mercury news. current plans route them through coyote valley between san jose and gilroy. the last estimates put it at $64

billion between san francisco and l.a. area by 2029. happening today, a special honor for late san francisco mayor ed lee. a groundbreaking ceremony for a new dorm at the life learning academy on treasure islands. his widow will preside over the ceremony. it will host 20 at risk charter students. the facility and a student garden will be named after him. he made a $1.5 million donation to make this possible. a proposal to boost street cleaning services by millions of dollars in san francisco is a no go. a board of supervisors committee voted against the idea last night. according to the examiner, supervisor james -- running for mayor was behind the proposal she wanted to use $2.5 million in leftover city funding in this year's budget to boost street cleaning. kim says there's been a rise in complaints over feces, litter and needles. the proposal rejected by the board of supervisors.

all right. guess we're going to go to natasha now. yes, indeed. check out the numbers. 141 right now in the green. 25,034. happening today, martin shkreli, pharma bro, will be sentenced. you may remember him making national news when he increased the price of a life-saving aids drug by 5,000%. he's facing prison oj charges he deceived investors. shkreli wrote a letter to the judge saying, quote, i was a fool. you have until end of today to comment on the plan to drill for oil and natural gas off the california coast. in a message posted online, senator dianne feinstein is urging as many people as possible to make your voices heard. they want to fight the expansion of offshore drilling. the land commission had refuse to issue permits for inf infrastructure that drillers need to bring oil and gas from offshore fields to land.
