. good morning. i'm jessica castro. that breaking news -- a major police activity at the veterans home in napa county on california drive in yountville. we're still working to find out exactly what happened. the napa county sheriff's office is asking everyone to avoid the area. we have crews on the way and we'll continue to track the story. we'll bring you any updates in this newscast and on our news app and abc7news.com. toys "r" us is preparing for liquidation of its u.s. operations, which means several stores will close its doors right here in the bay area. it's sad news for nostalgic parents but also good news for

those looking for massive sales amy hollyfield is live in concord. >> reporter: hi, jessica. reports this morning say all stores could be closing as early as nengs week. toys "r" us is not officially commenting on these reports. this comes as quite as surprise, especially here in concord. this toys "r" us is brand-new, an indication the future looked bright. customers we met with this morning, they say they are hoping toys "r" us will still make it. when they heard the news, they gathered up gifts they received since having their baby and headed straight to the concord toys "r" us this morning. >> we're coming because we have gift cards. we want to use them up just in case. >> reporter: smart move. sources are saying the end of toys "r" us might be in sight. that the company is making plans to liquidate. customers say they would hate to see these stores close. >> it's kind of sad. even if we're not buying anything, they like to stop and look around. we can't do that anymore. hopefully we don't lose them all. they have some good stuff, good

deals usually. >> reporter: valerie is here because her toys "r" us closed. the company declared bankruptcy in september and took out a loan to try to make a comeback, but the holiday season was not kind to the toy store and the company hasn't been able to find a buyer or reach a deal with lenders. "good morning america" chief business correspondent rebecca jarvis says deals will probably be coming and jobs will be going. >> store closures mean job losses. they mean those going out of business sales. so, for consumers, keep in mind, those purchases, while they're discounted, they are often final. >> reporter: in concord, customers are still hopeful, especially since this store is brand-new. >> that's why i don't anticipate a complete shutdown. i anticipate some sort of bounceback. >> reporter: if this does happen, there will be a trickle down effect for toy companies. shares of mattel are down 7% on this news. this is the last mega store

dedicated to selling only toys. if they do shut down, this truly would be the end of an era. live in concord, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> thank you. new this morning, the aclu has filed a class-action lawsuit accusing the u.s. government of broadly separating immigrant families seeking asylum. immigrant advocates specifically accuse the trump administration of systematically separating parents and children seeking asylum to deter people from coming into the u.s. administration officials acknowledge they have separated some families, but say they do not have a broad policy. walnut creek police are investigating the murder of a 60-year-old man. investigators found the victim just before 7:30 last night with life-threatening injuries at lacassie avenue. a 34-year-old man was detained and being questioned. it's unclear if the two men had any connection. an investigation is under way into a deadly hit-and-run crash in oakland on san pablo

avenue between 33rd and 34th street. there was heavy police presence this morning. san pablo avenue was closed in both directions in that area. we're still awaiting information on the victim and the suspect's vehicle. an 18-year-old girl killed in a deadly hit-and run was remembered in a candlelight vigil. family and friends remembered her, aries buffin. she was killed by this suv when it rolled backwards onto a sidewalk. police believe vincent fitzer, a transient, is the one who have been the driver. he has amassed 31 charges including car theft and burglary. >> he shouldn't have left my sister in the street for dead like that. >> that was my only friend. >> reporter: she wa the youngest of eight and planned to

join the navy after graduating from high school. san jose police need your help identifying this bank robber. newly released surveillance video shows a man with a gun walking into the wells fargo bank on first street back on december 16th. he threatened the teller, took handfuls of cash and then ran away. you can see here he wore a great hoodie and warriors baseball cap. his face was hidden behind a mask. if you have any information about this crime, you are asked to call san jose police. happening today, an east bay community will add its voice to the growing chorus of people demanding gun control. san ramone will hold a rally in favor of common sense gun control laws. they stand in one with the parkland, florida, community. the rally runs from 4:00 until 7:00 at san ramone city hall. as parents and students are gearing up for spring break travel, we're learning new

details about that terrifying ferry explosion at a very popular tourist destination. gio benitez has more. >> reporter: this morning the u.s. embassy in mexico issuing another security alert, closing the consulate in the popular spring break destination of playa del carmen. embassy officials telling the associated press the new warning is not related to the bombs found on two ferries to the tourist hot spot in recent weeks. >> there was a loud bang. >> reporter: one of those bombs exploding, injuring at least 25 people, including five americans. and now mexico's biggest tv network obtaining images of the explosive device found on board the charred remains of that ferry. the network saying the photos show indications of a homemade explosive with a detonator, power supply and reporting, federal sources say, they even found shrapnel.

this second device similar but more sophisticated found attached to the bottom of another ferry just days after the first blast. >> some things we can deduce from the pictures we've seen, these weren't large bombs intended to kill a lot of people. they were more likely to put holes in the bottom of the boat, to slowly sink a boat. >> reporter: after the second bomb was discovered, princess cruises issue iing to guests, canceled all ferries and strongly advise ferries from cozumel to the mainland be avoided. >> i think the mexican government will do a good job searching ships to make sure this doesn't happen again. this week the state department also issued an advisory for spring breakers headed to mexico warning travelers about unregulated alcohol and reports of americans losing consciousness or becoming injured after only one or two drinks. let's take a live look outside from our roof camera. you can see here, the

embarcadero looking pretty nice. will you need that umbrella handy? let's check in with meteorologist mike nicco. >> thank you very much, jessica. somebody's going to get soaked and it's less and less likely it's going to be us. let's take a look at what's going on with live doppler 7. i overlaid the clouds. you can see the satellite there very bright down to our south. looks like it's coming towards us. it's this area of low pressure that's going to trigger that moisture into some showers, but look at the path now. that's the yellow arrow. it is trending farther and farther south. so, places like santa barbara and down around slow, they could get the soaking this weekend. we'll get our soaking next week. so, i've revised the weekend forecast and taken a lot of the rain out of it. i'll show you who does have a slight chance of some rain and how much rain we're going to get next week. we'll measure it in inches. like 1 to 2. >> mike, we'll check in with you shortly. a proposal to boost street

cleaning services by millions of dollars in san francisco is a no go. a board of supervisors committee voted against the idea last night. according to the examiner, supervisor jane kim running for mayor was behind the proposal. she wanted to use $2.5 million left over in city funding to boost street cleaning. kim says there's a rise in complaints of feces, needles. the board says there are more immediate crisis. california's high-speed authority will release a new plan. yesterday biologists said they're concerned the plans will cause the extinction of wildlife in santa cruz mountains, according to the mercury news. current plans route the high-speed trains through coyote valley and gilroy. the last estimate would put the

cost at $64 billion with the train running between san francisco and los angeles areas by 2029. lyft will soon test self-driving cars in the east bay. yesterday lyft announced a new partnership with go mentum safety. you're watching here video of a car being tested at their 5,000-acre site in concord. lyft has been building a self-driving system for at least the last year. grab the peanuts and cracker jacks and catch the game on your cell phone? facebook has agreed to a deal with major league baseball to air 25 afternoon games this season on facebook. it's called facebook watch. the company's video feature and facebook, twitter and amazon as well as other tech companies are in a race to acquire sports streaming rights. verizon signed a deal with the

we're working to find out exactly what's happening there. there are reports that shots were fired inside the home this morning. no word on any victims or the suspect. napa county sheriff's office asking everyone to avoid the area. we do have a crew on the way. right now, though, i want to check in with bob hurley, who is joining us on the phone. he owns hurley's restaurant located right new the veterans home. thank you for joining us here on the phone. what can you tell us? what are you seeing from your vantage point? >> well, from my vantage point right now, i'm in town so i can't see anything. however, i was up there just a half an hour ago. i have a storage container up there and i was getting some things for the restaurant. it must have happened right about the time i was there because i was leaving i saw -- well, it must have been 30, 35 squad cars of all types rushing in. police, chp, sheriff's department, napa city police,

and got a dozen or so unmarked cars. everybody with their lights flaring. they were definitely in a hurry. as i was leaving, i just asked somebody on the way out. they mentioned it was a shooting. but that's about all i know. >> how far away was your storage container facility from the veterans home? >> i would say probably a mile or so, something like that. >> did you have any indication that the public might be in danger when you were at the storage ntilikifacility? did they give you any idea as to what was happening on a larger scale? >> as far as the general public goes, that home is fairly isolated from the rest of the town. you have to really drive way in there to get there. there is a huge community of vets there, though. over 1,000, probably 800 that are ambulatory, enough to be around. i did hear that it was near the dining hall, so definitely some

of our vets, you know, could be threatened. i don't know. that's just speculation. as i said, i really have no idea. >> sure, yes, bob, we have limited information at this point. can you give us an idea for those of us who haven't been to the veterans home just how remote the area is? as you mentioned, it's pretty remote. was there a lot of activity going in and out of that veterans home? >> there's a small amount of activity going in and out as far as the general public goes, people visiting their relatives who are there, purveyors and business people who are -- who do business at the vets home. and then the employees. and that's in addition to the -- like i said, i think there's 1100 or so vets. hurley's restaurant is really involved with the vets and we value our vets and we see a lot of them at the restaurant. we try to do as much as we can. i'm particularly concerned because i know a lot of them. so this is kind of -- kind of an

emotional thing for us down at the restaurant. >> absolutely. >> we're waiting. >> yes, our thoughts with them as they go through this situation. of course, we don't know quite exactly what's happening there or if there are any victims, anything about a suspect, if this was a shooting. we're working on confirming all of that. you mentioned you were visiting your storage container facility when all of this was happening. what else is in that area nearby. any other businesses or homes? >> no homes except the people -- there are some residents that live there, work there. not many at this point. right now i think they're trying to work that out in the long run. there's a lot of outlying building storage container places where the vets go, gardens and, yeah, outlying buildings. nothing where i was. oh, there's a baseball field there, which, you know, is home to some aaa ball clubs, that

kind of thing. there's a swimming pool there right where -- near where i was. none of that is open nor is anybody around right now. none of that is in danger. there's no threat there. i think they've pretty -- it happened early enough so i think they've pretty much been very successful at isolating the whole thing. as i said, the only people i would be concerned about would be the vets themselves because in that dining area, if that's where the shooting was, there is a lot of activity. you know, there's a lot of -- the buildings right around there are nestled fairly close together. there's a lot of recreation for the vets there. they have like lounges and ping pong and just stuff they can do. so, it's probably a fair concentration of people around there. and it is getting onto lunchtime, so there's probably traffic, you know, going in and out to the dining hall. so, yeah. >> okay, bob hurley, thank you for joining us. we're glad you are safe. of course, our thoughts with your friends that do live and

work at the veterans home in yountville. just to tell our viewers that we are working to confirm exactly what has happened there, but we do have reports of shots fired inside that veterans home this will morning. we want to give you a little bit of background. abc7 news was at the veterans home in october during the north bay fires. a caravan of ambulances rushed to the veterans home to pick up about 80 elderly veterans with compromised respiratory systems. this is what you're seeing here on your screens. they were taken to facilities in sacramento. others were taken by bus to a staging area. veterans home of california at yountville is the nation's largest retirement home for veterans so we're watching this story very closely. we'll have any updates as soon as we get them. we're moving onto some developing news now in parkland, florida, after that shooting that happened there last month. just about an hour ago, a judge ordered accused shooter nikolas

happens into thursday. all that wet weather. more than an inch and most areas, 2 inches up in the north area. you need to be ready for next week's deluge. let's take a look at my accuweather seven-day forecast. temperatures will be a little cooler saturday and sunday and then warm up monday. i have ones on there but you can take those off saturday and sunday. the two for thursday when the heavier rain rolls in. jessica? >> mike, thank you. we want to update breaking news in napa county. we have just confirmed, there is an active shooter situation at the veterans home in yountville. there are three hostages. the napa county sheriff's office and chp are on scene right now. people at the home are being ordered to shelter in place. we do have crews headed to the scene right now. i believe we're going to check in with reporter wayne friedman, my colleague, on his way to the scene right now. can you tell me what you know about that veterans home? it's a very large facility. >> you know about as much as we do at this point. we're still on the road.

we're on highway 37 heading over. expect to make the turn very quickly. i do know this road is very active. just a few moments ago we were passed by marin county sheriff's car going code three, that is lights and sirens full speed through traffic. to this event. we went to the facebook site of the yountville veterans home to see if anything is going on there. we asked them to call us and give us any inside information. so far active shooter. we're told it happened around 10:20 this morning, a male person -- a male subject, that there may be some hostages involved, that he was wearing black, that he was also wearing armor and some sort of gear. and if the napa county sheriff has locked the area down and they have asked people to shelter in place. that's all we know so far. it's a bit of a drive out there, but we expect to see quite a

scene when we get there. that's the latest. i don't want to speculate because i can only tell you what we've seen but it's a busy road heading into napa and lot of traffic of people in the area talking about what they've seen. a lot of speculation so far. >> we talked to ayman area at t storage facility nearby the veterans home and he mentioned this is a veterans home located in somewhat of a remote area. of course, anyone familiar with napa county knows there are some areas that have pretty remote large spaces. it's not like a city in san francisco where you have high-rise buildings. this is far away. can you paint us an image of where you're headed? you mentioned takes a while to get there from where we are. >> actually, it's want that far. you can see it from the highway as you're driving into napa and yountville. it has roughly 1,000 people who live there. these are veterans, men and women from as far back as world

war ii, the korean war, vietnam war, even some of the more -- the later incidences in iraq and elsewhere. this veterans home was built in 1884. it is, we're told, the largest veterans home of its type. the largest veterans home anywhere in the united states of america. all kinds of people there. i've been there many times in the past. it's generally a very peaceful place. people are pretty happy. it does have the look of an institution. veterans who live there live one person to a small room. and it's a communal kind of area. but in terms of reaching -- yeah, it's right off the freeway. you drive up a long road. it's very peaceful. generally very quite until today. >> off the highway, but not too many homes located next to the veterans home, right, wayne?

>> not that i've noticed. it's to the west side hf highway 121. you look to the left, there's a golf course over there, a driving range. to the right is yountville and all those wonderful little restaurants. up on the hill is the veterans home. it's a large facility. pretty much set off by itself. i wouldn't describe it as being well off the beaten path. it's walking distance from the veterans home. maybe a mile at the most. >> wayne, thank you. i know you're still headed up there. have a safe drive. we'll check in with you shortly as soon as you get any more information and as soon as you get to that scene. we want to show our viewers the facebook page from the veterans home of california. if we can get that up on our screens. they have just posted seven minutes ago saying law enforcement is at the yountville veterans home right now following reports of gunfire.
