the hostage situation. >> reporter: that's right, there were originally seven people taken hostage, all employees, they were in a staff meeting when a gunman walked into the meeting, i talked to the husband of one of the women who was among that seven in the meeting. the gunman let four of them go. she was among those four released and was able to get a phone call through to her husband. here's what he had to say. >> it was like a going away party for a couple of the staff who were leaving today, today was their last day. they were having cake and toasting and all that and then the man just walked in with this rifle. >> reporter: what did the gunman do when he walked into the party? >> i'm not quite clear. >> reporter: he talked to your wife, though? >> i think he talked to all of them, but i don't know that he said much. >> reporter: very calm? >> that's what my wife said,

yes. >> reporter: how did he choose who to let go? >> i don't know. four women were allowed to leave, three are still there. >> reporter: kramer said his wife debra smith seen in this linkedin photo was terrified. he said that the gunman was very calm, very smooth as he let the four women go. law enforcement told them to lie on the floor as there was a lockdown campus wide. employees in some areas of the veterans center were allowed back in, others were told to stay outside. i was told a little while ago that building d and the hospitality area are still at this hour are under lockdown. they are very close to that pathway center. so obviously near where the

gunman is still in a room with the hostages. there have been a steady stream of law enforcement cars, tactical teams, coming in, streaming in to this veteran's home all afternoon long. we understand the fbi is the agency that is trying to establish communication or is in communication with the gunman, other agencies are manning all other means of securing this veteran's home, a lot of people have left, some residents, some employees have left. we do know that at one point today shots were exchanged with the gunman, we have heard as little as a couple of shots on up to as many as three shots, we don't have any confirmation as to how many shots were actually fired. there are three medical helicopters standing by nearby. reporting live from the veteran's home. >> and the sheriff in the news conference did say many, many

shots. the police response has really been breathtaking and massive. abc news was at the golf course in yountville where three helicopters landed to set up their operations. the helicopters took over this entire driving range. >> this standoff that has been going on for hours now, has rattled a really quiet community in the napa valley. >> let's go to abc7's wayne freedman. >> reporter: it has been a surreal day in yountville, over my shoulder is the yountville veterans facility, an idyllic wine country setting. let's go to some of that video earlier today as we talked about some of the helicopters landing. this whole thing began about 10:20 this morning, immediately law enforcement came in from all points, at the golf course next to the home. they closed the driving range,

three different copters landed, all standing by with crews from cal fire. residents who had not been con campus this morning, still are not able to return. they're talking to friends and family inside. here's a gentleman named paul russo. >> go to your room, put all your furniture by the door and hide like cowards. we're veterans, man, we'll take this guy out in a second. let us do that, that's what we do. i wouldn't kill him first, i would shoot him in the leg and try to disarm him and handcuff him. >> you know, it's unfortunate, with everything that's going on and the school shootings, nothing surprises me in this day and age anymore. >> reporter: as we come back live, you see those helicopters which remain on the driving range even now, one of them a medical helicopter, another belonging to the california highway patrol and as leslie said a short time ago, the

yountville veterans home still remains locked down, thousands of veterans going all the way back from world war ii to the present. there's not a lot going on in there that we know about and there's not a lot going on out here that we know about, other than that a lot of people are waiting for this resolve, and hopefully peacefully. which have some drone video to share with you, to give you a better idea of the sheer size of this veterans facility. it's the largest of its kind in the u.s. and you can see it looks for like a sprawling college campus, it opened all the back in 1884, they have a creative arts center as well as a chapel and it does house veterans all the way from world war ii and it does house veterans from iraq and afghanistan. it serves about 1,000 vets to help them recover from the

psychological and the physicfiz ravages of war. >> reporter: nestled in picturesque napa valley, the veterans facility in yountville is the oldest and biggest in the state. they live in spanish colonial style buildings, named after former u.s. presidents. some veterans are elderly, some are from more recent conflicts. it has it's own bank, gym, multifaith chapel, and library. there's a nursing care center for post-9/11 veterans who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorders a group of vets came forward with issues about cramped living quarters, that led to a petition drive calling

for upgrades to living quarters. nbc 7 has spoken to a staffer for a california assembly woman. >> througout the day, we have been hearing firsthand accounts of the chaos unfolding in yountville, here are a few of the stories people have shared with us about what they have seen and heard. >> my father is up there, his name is george stranton. somebody told me there was a shooting up here and so i came up here to see about him. >> reporter: have you been able to communicate with him? >> no, i haven't. >> reporter: are you worry in the. >> of course i am. i live in st. alina. yeah, of course i'm worried about him. >> reporter: what have you heard? >> only what i got from residents here, they're still in lockdown. some of them are hostages, i don't know how many or anything like that.

shoot-out with with with with wh earlier we speoke to a former fi agent about what's happening in yountville. >> i did 20 years in the fbi, my first three at the fbi in san francisco, and two at the san francisco s.w.a.t. team, and after that, i spent 10 years on the fbi's hostage rescue team, so i have been on multiple operations similar to this, what's happening right now is they're trying to tighten the reins around the person right now that's on the hot seat. they want to get give him as little room as possible and get as closing as possible to effect an immediate response. that rein is getting tighter and tighter around him right now, negotiators will be talking to him, trying to get him to

release the hostages and give himself up peacefully, but at the same time, the sw.w.a.t. teams are planning how they will enter the dining room where he is at, if he book becomes a tho these hostages. >> we have heard they've been trying to initiate negotiations and they have been failing so far. what does one do where the suspect will not pick up the phone and he will not talk. >> that gives you a look into his mindset. if he is not willing to negotiate, that definitely adds to the complexity of the situation. i can assure you that the fbi is listening to what's happening inside that room, they have, you know, classified techniques to insert microphones and listening devices and even cameras.

so they have good eyes on in that room as to what he's actually doing, that gives them a lot of information and intelligence as they device their plan to enter that room should he decide to get violent. >> in your professional experience, what does it tell you that this man entered, and was incredibly calm and perhaps had the opportunity to inflict as much damage as possible, but did not do, went into a staff meeting and as i said, eerily calm, let four women go, and chose three women to stay in that room with him. what does that tell you about his mindset? >> again, i'm not going to get into the mind of a person who does this type of thing, because we never really know what they are thinking. it could be that he has a relationship of some kind with one of those women he has held hostage. if he selected those individuals, he may again, know one or two or all of them and that's why he chose them. but that's just speculation on

my part at this point in time. i don't have any information other than what's being said in the media. >> how does one negotiate or deal with a suspect when we know they are very calm and very self-contained versus someone who is acting erratically and is very unpredictable? >> it works in our favor if he's calm and his demeanor is that he's not overly excitable and going into violence right now, that works in our favor. that means there is time for that negotiation to occur, should he decide to pick up the phone and talk to negotiators. it's the ones that are erratic, that are volatile, that are, you know, ychaotic, those are the ones you can't predict what they're going to be. those are the types that are better for law enforcement to deal with versus somebody who is much more chaotic. >> all right, we're going to continue to watch that, again,

that robbery, it's been reopened, but traffic is extremely heavy and coming off the bay bridge ramp, it was backed up going back to 2:00 in the afternoon. the chp says fortunately nobody was hurt in what would be described as a brazen armed robbery. new details in walnut creek's first homicide in almost a year. melissa harrington joining us from lacasse avenue. >> reporter: i just got off the phone from the coroner's office and the victim has been identified as 60-year-old sw swan iii from san pablo. we're at the end of a small dead end street, which is near a church and the b.a.r.t. tracks and people who live nearby are shocked that something to terrible could happen here. construction work continues on a

large scale apartment project on lacassie avenue where a man was killed. police arrested a 40-year-old from concord, they say he worked as a security guard here, and attacked his co-worker near the entrance on the first floor. >> the weapon that was used was a 4-foot long metal pole, it's about 40 pounds in weight. and it was used to strike the victim in the head multiple times. >> reporter: police were first called to the scene just before 7:00 and found both the victim and the suspect suffering from injuries. the construction worker jose alvarado just talked to the victim last night. he says he was a nice guy. >> it was crazy, i talked to him yesterday night. >> reporter: this man's man's

now, we'll be wet and unsettled pattern for all next week. look for low temperatures in the mid to upper 40s, probably 51 here in san francisco. and our approaching storm on the storm impact scale ranks 1, a storm of light intensity arrives tomorrow afternoon. it's not looking very strong at the moment, spotty light showers, the rainfall totals will be quite light and the best chance of rain will be in the south bay. here's a look with widespread fog and high clouds into the morning hours. we may see some light fog to the north. high temperatures ranging from about 60 at the coast, and mid and upper 60s inland. down in the south bay, if we get any showers at all, that's o e' best chance. this will be the picture, notice those spots of moisture moving through and swinging through very quickly. so it may be completely dry

new developments in california's high-speed rail service. the estimated cost has gone up by 20%, with the price tag now at $77 billion. the bullet train won't arrive now until 2033, a delay of four years, but the first segment in the central valley is expected to be done by 2022. these new members came out today when the rail authority laid out its new business plan. a coalition of religious and community leaders rallied in santa clara county today, to support an initiative that would close the prop 13 corporate loophole, the california schools

happy. we're learning more today about former president obama's negotiations with netflix to produce shows for the los gatos based streaming service. the former president and wife michelle would use their programs to explore new ways to help others share their stories. according to the "new york times," one idea would have mr. obama express his views on voting rights and immigration, but he would not use these shows to respond to president trump or any conservative critics. the grays anatomy critics show people working on opposite side of the law, it's calls for the people. how difficult was it to prepare for this role? do you feel like you can pass the bar exam now? >> no. no. i went online and looked up some bar exam questions just for fun. i was like, oh, gosh.

of california and the small wine country home of yountville in northern napa valley. >> the gunman took hostages at the veterans home of california in yountville. >> this is how the tense situation has unfolded. the gunman slipped into an office party being held in that building around 10:30 this morning and took some people hostage. that's according to the husband of one of the workers at the veterans home. >> the gunman released four people but kept three female hostages. shortly after that there was an exchange of gun fire between officers and the gunman, with a sheriff's deputy saying many shots were fired. so far we have no reports of any injuries. >> the sheriff's department says it knows the man's identity but they're not releasing it and the sheriff says he does not know a motive. we have live team coverage from the scene, let's begin with
