ris?n mountain movi. iin fact, g r>>in lisa, thanks. developing news from unitville where the veterans home of california is grieving after authorities say a troubled veteran took three women hostage. all four of them were found dead. the women had been identified as christine loeber, the executive director of the pathway home. psychologist jennifer gonzalez. and therapist jennifer golick. the napa county sheriff's office identifies the gunman as 36-year-old albert wong from sacramento. he is a former army infantry man. the department of defense says wong was a decorated soldier, active duty for three years. spent a year in afghanistan earning medals for marksmanship. now employees and police are searching for a motive. katie utehs is on the scene and

shows us what happened overnight. >> reporter: chpers escorted us onto the sprawling campus at 10:30 last night to this location where they have maintained a perimeter around the building behind me, the focus of their investigation. in the last six hours we have watched investigators come and go from the crime scene. not only the building but also looking at cars in the parking lot of the overnight a tow truck removed a car from the parking lot outside the building where the shooting took place. investigators say the gunman drove onto the property but have not confirmed if this was his vehicle. officers located a cell phone in the gunman's car. all clues as any worked to determine why a veteran would take the lives of three people working in veterans services. >> it was a going away party for a couple of the staff who were leaving today. today was their last day. you know, they were having cake, and you know, toasting and all of that. and then parnell he just walked

in with this rifle. four women were able to leave. three are still there. >> reporter: investigators identified the gunman as 36-year-old albert wong of sacramento. >> somebody knocked on the door and said there's a shooter on campus, and we are in lockdown. and that was that. >> reporter: hundreds of respects stayed locked down most of the day, along with staff. >> check that the members are all okay. >> reporter: in this photo from the pathway home facebook page, christine loeber can be seen opposite the man believed to have killed her, wong. >> she was wonderful. >> reporter: congressman mike thompson knew her permanently. >> it's unexplainable. >> reporter: jen golick and jen gonzalez were also found dead around 6:00. a few hours earlier, kay claken got news everyone else was safe, including her father, a 9 -year-old world war ii veteran.

very relieved that my dad is okay. but i'm going to stay here until i can actually see my dad and give him a big hug. >> reporter: in unitville, katie utehs, abc7 news. >> this all happened at the 9,000 acre veteran's home kauchs. it is number 240 labelled the pat way home, located in the middle of this map. it helps veterans with deployment related stress transition back to civilian life. the facility houses thousands of veterans and hundreds of people who work at the home. cornell barnard explains how the events unfolded yesterday. >> i come before the company with tragic news. >> reporter: it was the news the chp officials hoped not to give after a military veteran armed with a rifle stormed the office of the veterans home of california and shot three female hostages and then turned the gun on himself. >> shortly before 6:00 p.m. this even law enforcement personnel

made entry into the room where we felt the hostages were being held by the suspect and unfortunately made the discovery of four deceased. >> reporter: the chp says it happened inside building g, the offices for the pathway home, a non-profit treating iraq war veterans for ptsd. three female employees were taken hostage. north bay senator bill dodd confirms the suspect had recently been treated by the pathway home. the catch us was on lockdown as police and s.w.a.t. teams surrounded the building. initially napa county sheriff's exchanged gunfire with the suspect. it's unknown if the suspect was hit. >> we eliminate the ability for the suspect to go out and find further victims. >> reporter: the suspect's rental car was found and searched by bomb sniffing dogs, which found nothing. for now, the chp can't say why

this suspect targeted his three victims. in youbtville, cornell barnard, abc7 news. this morning, governor brown says his heart goes out to the victims and their families adding ann and i are daeply sadden. flags will fly at half staff at the capital. we know the pathway home serves about 1,000 veterans and helps them recover from the physical and psychological ravages of war. abc7 news anchor natasha tells us more about the history of the facility. >> reporter: the vet reason's home of california in unitville is the oldest facility for vets in the state. it is the largest veterans home in the country. founded in 184, vhc yountdville is home for nearly 900 men and women and their families. they live in spanish colonial style buildings named after presidents. some residents here are elderly, some from more recent conflicts. it has its own post office,

the back wall. it happened at a house on grandview avenue and market street in twin peaks. it hit a parked car. plowed through the garage of the home and into the back of the house. it is a unclear if there were any injuries. a case of highway robbery happened yesterday afternoon on the southbound 280 connector ramp. a car boxed in this hyundai sedan, smashed the victim's window with a gun and robbed this. >> we think it was just a drive birobbery. it was definitely a targeted matter. whoever it was that robbed that vehicle knew what the parties were carrying and targeted this. >> the suspects sped off after taking the victims' belongings. the chp says no shots were fired. san jose police are looking for more possible victims of a suspected armed robber.

he is now under arrest and could be responsible for a bay area crime spree. abc7 news reporter katie marzullo has more. >> reporter: san jose police released this surveillance video showing one of the robberies in progress. you see a suspect pull a gun out of his pocket and grab money out of the register. this man was not working that night but described what his coworker told him. >> he gave me $20 bill. i opened the register. i want to give the $10 back. when i opened the register, he showed me gun. >> reporter: detectives say daniel mendoza is the gunman in the video. they arrested him and say he is responsible for at least five robberies, a jack in the box in milpitas and two gas stations and two 7-elevens in san jose. >> now i'm happy. i know everybody feels safety. >> reporter: investigators robberies throughout the bay area n. most cases he points a gun at the clerk and takes cash

earlier sunrise today. last one, before it gets later tomorrow. looking at 60s today. mild with the cloud. a bit muggy. and then we'll see temperatures still staying on the mild side. if you have evening plans tonight, with no rain. but, boy, that changes next week. dig those umbrellas out. we will talk about a pretty rainy period coming up. chris. >> lisa thanks. right now let's update you on our top story. the hostage situation at a yountville veterans home that ended tragically. this morning we learned the identities of the three women killed in a standoff. they have identified as christine loeber the executive director of the pathway home at the yountville veterans comb. psychologist jennifer gonzalez and therapist jennifer golick. abc7 news was at the home overnight when a tow truck removed a car from the parking lot. authorities confirmed the suspect be drove onto the

property but haven't confirmed whether this was his vehicle. tragic news came down before 8:00 p.m. last night. come before the public with tragic news. shortly before 6:00 p.m. this even law enforcement personnel made entry into the room where we felt the hostages were being held by the suspect and unfortunately made the discovery of three deceased females and one deceased male suspect. this is a tragic piece of news. one that we were really hoping we wouldn't have to come before the public to give. >> the napa county sheriff's office identifies the gunman as 36-year-old albert wong from sacramento. he is a former army infantry man. this all started with a shooting at the veteran's home of california in yountville at around 10:30 yesterday morning. here's a quick listen at what we heard on the scanner. >> it is a possible active shooter. suspect with a rifle, holding three people hostage. >> and that was just part of the

initial dispatch on this case. we have some drone video that gives you a better idea of the size of the veterans facility. it is the largest of its kind in the united states. from this video you can see it's more like a college campus. it opened in 1884. there is a theater, baseball stadium, bowling alley, library, creative arts center, and a chappell on site. the facility helps service members from world war ii to the veterans from iraq and afghanistan. if you would like to help our veterans, go to our facebook phage and share this badge. news out of southern california. one officer was killed and another is in stable condition this morning after being shot during a barricade situation in pomona. police say a suspect barricade inside of a home, shot the two officers just after k89 last name. the l.a. times reports about 75 officers responded to the scene but couldn't get the two injured to safety because of the gunman.

eventually they were both taken to the hospital. s.w.a.t. officers remain on the scene. this morning, a warning across the bay area after police in the east bay busted a major card skimming operation. the crew from l.a. county was preying on people in the east bay city of crockette but they were also seen in alameda, santa clara, san mateo, contra costa and san francisco counties. now police are asking gas station managers to make sure their equipment is secure. abc7 has the details. >> reporter: with the swipe of a card and a few push of buttons, your identity can be stolen. so can your money. police say that's what these four men were doing when they were arrested in fremont. an officer noticed this man acting suspiciously at a, the ms including this one on mari avenue. when he was stopped police say he had large amounts of cash but no atm card. >> it sounds like this is fairly sophisticated. there is ties to l.a. county. they had a significant amount of money.

various gift cards. >> reporter: the arrest led them to this nearby motel where officers found his brother in possession of cards, cash and electronics. police say they were using cloned debit cards obtained by a skimming device. these usually have a key. they open up the machine at the pump and insert the skimmer device and close it up. the next person has no idea that their information has been stolen. >> that skimming device is blue tooth enabled which allows a person with a laptop to simply park nearby. whenever somebody uses their atm card or credit card that data is then transmitted to that laptop. >> reporter: police are encouraging gas station owners to inspect the inside of their pumps frequently. they also want consumers to be proactive checking their financial statements. >> i always pay at the cashier, inside, never at the machine. >> reporter: why? >> to make it more secure. >> reporter: police in fremont also arrested two more men from

speeches to encourage the community to come on out. >> reporter: conservative commentator ann coulter says she is coming to the bay area next week. the liberty forum is hosting the sold out event in mountain view next tuesday. they will have officers present at the venue the day before to ensure safety for everyone. coulter scheduled two visits in april and then september were canceled. despite the recent rumors, santa clara supervisor cindy chavez decided not to enter the race for san jose mayor. in a statement, she says i will continue my efforts as a county supervisor to work with the mayor to solve our housing affordability crisis, to protect and grow the middle class, expand mental health services, we build "gma" broken public safety infrastructure and support all women fighting for equity and dignity.

some of it much colder, impacting the sierra nevada as well. here's the golden gate bridge. we can see all of that fog. of course visibility further to the north impacted. as we look at live doppler 7, versiona returns indicating it's not reaching the ground. this is a weak system heading towards southern california. we have got some drizzle along the coast. but amounts won't be a lot. we will be looking at mainly cloudy skies over our neck of the woods today. quarter mile visibility in petaluma. half mile in santa rosa. two miles at the coast. south bay, ten mile visibility. and about eight miles over in oakland n. santa cruz, 60s today. mild with lots of cloud cover. 6:51 right now, san francisco, oakland, 54 mountain view. san jose is at 58. the temperature and the dew points about the same. that is allowing for a little bit of fog and that muggy feel to the air throughout the day today. we have had that as well.

48 santa rosa. 51 napa. we are looking at low 50s for novato, concord. 50 degrees. in the mountains upper 20s. potential rain heading your way. if you are headed up to the mountains next week looking at patchy dense fog here with mild afternoon temperatures. more sunday tomorrow, then looking at that wet pattern into next week. the clocks will move forward one hour. the sunrise for tomorrow, 7:27. sun setting at 7:13. so the clouds today pretty much all around the bay, you can see the showers well to the south. this is company tonight. and into the afternoon tomorrow the clouds break away. we'll call it partly cloudy. as a result, temperatures bump up to near 70 tomorrow.
