is right for you. ♪ ♪ good morning bay area. let's get up and get going. >> this is abc7 mornings. >> it's saturday, march 10th. good morning, and thanks so much for joining us. i'm chris nguyen. let's start with our first look at the forecast. here's meteorologist lisa argen, tracking live doppler 7 for us. >> hi chris. good morning. we have layers of clouds, low and high level clouds. also a little bit of moisture in the cloud deck here. could see sprinkles from sears point to marrinwood, highway 101. and further to the north around yountville and mount ellen, it's not measurable precip because the area of low pressure is down to the south. that's where the active weather will be a. spotty area of drizzle or mist are possible for us. otherwise arc mild start with 54 in concord and hayward. from the beach you can see all the cloud cover. we will hold onto the clouds

today with low to mid 60s by noontime. and we are looking at one hour less of sleep tonight as we turn the clocks forward. a later sunrise and later sunset. and we will talk about more rain in the seven-day outlook. chris? >> lisa, thanks. developing news from yountville where the veterans home of california is grieving after authorities say a troubled veteran took three women hostage. all four of them were found dead. the women have been identify as christine loeber, the executive director of the pathway home, psychologist jennifer gonzalez and therapist jennifer golick. the napa county sheriff's office identifies the gunman as 36-year-old albert wong from sacramento. he is a former army infantry man. the department of defense says wong was a decorated soldier, active tut for three years, and spent a year in afghanistan earning medals for marksmanship. now employees and police are searching for a motive. abc7 news is live in yountville

with the laters. carlos, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning chris. we are getting a closer look at the building where this all unfolded yesterday. behind me is the pathway house. that two-story building there where officials say the hostage situation took place all day long. again, this was yesterday. there is some police activity currently, but we do have some video that we want to show from you overnight, where a tow truck removed a car from the parking lot outside the shooting where the shooting happened. there is a perimeter in place still. officials say the gunman drove onto the campus but they haven't confirmed if this was his vehicle. investigators found a cell phone inside the car. the suspect has been identified as 36-year-old albert wong of sacramento, a former member this vet home. the victims were three women who worked at the pathway home program at the veterans facility. witnesses say there was going to be a going going away party for a couple of the staff here. now the armed suspect entered a staff meeting taking hostages.

>> somebody knocked on the door, and said there's a shooter on camp us and we are in lockdown. and that was that. >> there was a going away party for a couple of the staff who were leaving today. today was their last day. you know, they were having cake and you know, toasting and all that. and then apparently he just walked in with this rifle. four women were able to leave. three are still there. >> reporter: the standoff ended when officers went inside around sundown, finding a total of four bodies, including that of the suspect. the pathway home confirmed the name of the three victims last night. the executive director of the home, christine loeber. dr. jen golick a therapist, and dr. jennifer gonzalez a psychologist with the san francisco department of veterans affairs health care system. at this hour detectives are working to determine why a veteran would take the lives of three innocent women. a lot of these investigators

will be out here all day still combing through the evidence at this building behind my. reporting live in yountville, abc7 news. >> a lot of unanswered questions, carlos, thank you. here's a closer look at where this all happened. at the 9,000 acre veterans home campus at the pathway home in the middle of this map. it is a program that helps veterans with deployment-related stress transition back to civilian life. the facility houses 1,000 veterans as well as hundreds who work there. pabc news reporter cornell barnard. >> i come before the public with tragic news. >> reporter: i the news chp officials hoped not to give after a military veteran armed with a rifle stormed an office at the veterans home of california and shot three hee female hostages then turned the gun on himself. shortly before 6:p.m. this even law enforcement personnel made entry into the room where we

felt the hostages were being held by the suspect. and unfortunately made the discovery of three deceased females and one deceased male suspect. >> reporter: the chp says it happened inside building g, the offices for the pathway home, a non-profit treating iraq war veterans for ptsd. three female employees were taken hostage. north bay senator bill dodd confirms the suspect had recently been treated by pathway home. sky 7 was overhead. for hours the sprawling campus of the veterans home was on lockdown as police and s.w.a.t. teams surrounded the building. initially a napa county sheriff's deputy exchanged gunfire with the suspect. >> we credit him with saving lives of others in the area by eliminating the ability for the suspect to go out and find further victims. >> reporter: the suspect's rental car was found parked at the veterans home. it was searched by bomb sniffing dogs which found nothing. for now, the chp can't say why

this suspect targeted his three victims. in yountville, abc7 news. president trump is responding this morning to the tragedy in yountville. he tweeted, we are deeply saddened by the tragic situation in yountville and mourn the loss of three incredible women who cared for our veterans. this morning, governor brown says his heart goes out to the victims and their families, adding, ann and i are deeply saddened by the horrible violence at the yountville veterans home which tragically took the lives of three people dedicated to serving our veterans. flags will fly at half staff at the state capitol. as we mentioned before, the pathway home serves about 1,000 veterans and helps them recover from the physical and the psychological ravages of war. abc7 news anchor tells us more about the history of the facility. >> reporter: nestled in picturesque napa evaluate unit vale is the oldest facility for vets notice state. it is the largest veterans home in the country. founded in 1884, vhc yountville

is home for nearly 900 men and women and their families. they live in spanish colonial style buildings named after former u.s. presidents. some residents are elderly. some are from more recent flicks. it has it on post office, bank, gym, multifaith chappell, swimming pool and library. there is a memory care center for residents with dementia and also the pathways home program. it's where post 9/11 veterans who suffer from ptsds. last week the napa valley rogster reported a group of vets came forward with complaints about cramped living quarters, which led to a petition drive calling for improvements. va investigators visited the campus as recently as february 2nd. abc7 has spoken with a staffer for california assemblywoman curry who has introduced a funding bill to make improvements. abc7 news. as part of abc7's take action campaign, we vetted the most comprehensive list of local resources for veterans and their

families on our website. just go to abc7news.com/take action to fine your al aye. 8:58 is the time. new this morning, san francisco police are trying to find out how a car smashed through the garage of a home and ended up in the back wall. it happened around 2:00 this morning at a house on grandview avenue and market street near twin peaks. a car hit a parked car, went through the garage of the home, then plowed through the backall wall of the house. it is a unclear if there were any injuries or if the driver was caught. san francisco police are also investigating a case of highway robbery. it happened yesterday afternoon on the southbound interstate 280 connector ramp to southbound highway 101 in the city. a car boxed in this silver hyundai sedan and the attackers confronted the occupants. they smashed the victims' windows with a gun and robbed them. >> we don't think that it was just a drive birobbery.

it was definitely a targeted matter. they -- whoever it was that robbed that vehicle knew what the parties were carrying and targeted them. >> the suspects sped off after taking the victims' belongings. the chp says no shots were fired. san jose police are looking for more possible victims of a suspected armed robber. he's now under arrest and could be responsible for a bay area crime spree. abc7 news reporter katie marzullo has more. >> reporter: san jose police released this surveillance video showing one of the robberies in progress. you see the suspect pull a gun out of his pocket and grab cash out of the register. it happened at the valero gas station on snell avenue last month. mohammad was not working that night but he described what his coworker told him. >> he gave me $20 bill. i opened the register. i want to give the $10 back. when i opened the register, he showed me gun. >> reporter: detectives say daniel mendoza is the gunman in the video.

they arrested him and say he is responsible for at least five robberies a jack in the box in mill paid as and two gas stations and two 7-elevens in san jose. >> now i'm very happy. i know everybody in san jose maybe safety. >> reporter: investigators believe mendoza committed other robberies throughout the bay area n. most cases he points a gun at the clerk and takes cash or lottery scratchers. his getaway car a 2017 black jeep rent dade with black and yella paper plates. if you have information, call police. abc7 news. a quick reminder. daylight saving time begins tomorrow morning at 2:00. but one state lawmaker from san jose wants california to be exempt from the time change. assembly member chu has a bill headed for a state senate hearing. the bill could make daylight saving time last year round in california. chu says changing the clock each spring and fall is not good for our health or peace of mind.

the national rifle association has filed a lawsuit to block new gun control legislation in florida. the nra says the measure violates the second amendment by raising the age to buy guns from 18 to 21. the lawsuit comes just hours after florida's republican governor rick scott signed the land mark school safety and gun control bill. the measure was prompted by the parkland school massacre that killed 17 people on valentine's day. it looks like president trump will get his military parade after all. he said that he wanted one in

washington after he attended france's bastille day celebration last year. according to a pentagon memo there will be no tanks. just wheeled vehicles. that's to minimize damage to the streets of washington, d.c. the parade being planned for veteran's day, november 11. there is a controversy brewing in oakland. a company started serving company in the fruitvale neighborhood back in november. but now the coffee shop is taking a stand against police brutality by refusing to serve officers in uniform. the controversy started last month when the company posted a message on their instagram page saying talk with your neighbors, not the police. >> all they do is harm and threaten people and harass people. >> i know we may have some personal situations, but i can tell you that the police officers, the majority, are good individuals. >> the police officers' association has sent the coffee

shop a letter asking to talk. so far there has been no response. a gray whale has washed ashore on angel island. the marine mammal center tweeted this picture of the 28 foot juvenile whale. biologists say else malnourished and doesn't have much muscle tissue. they believe he was newly on his own and not experienced enough to forage for himself. it's not rain, but a broken water pipe that flooded a road yesterday in san lorenzo. a 30 inch transmission main ruptured affecting a stretch of busy hess pairian boulevard. the dmv near the oakland coliseum will remain closed another week as crews continue to repair water damage. police believe someone stole copper pipe back on february 7th. that caused major flooding and roof damage and the dmv has been closed since. crews are repairing the damage. the dmv is honoring appointments

at its other locations. a bone mayor ao donor here in california saved the life of a teenager who lives across the country. now the teenager is able to say thank you in person. reporter darsha phillips from our sister station in los angeles has the story. >> hi. others it's you. >> everything that i get to do now from this point is because of her. and i am so grateful for that. >> reporter: 19-year-old corrinne bass finally met the young woman who saved her life. >> i was diagnosed with aplastic anemia. so that's a bone marrow failure disorder. your immune dim system is undo. without that you can't fight illness. even the typical cold that you might get could kill somebody with aplastic anemia. >> reporter: corrinne's only hope was a bone marrow transplant. being a minority, finding a match wasn't going to be easy. but luckily, across the country here in california, kiana howard had registered as a donor with be the match. she knew nothing about corrinne, but didn't hesitate to step forward.

we are looking at mist and drizzle from santa barbara points south, san luis obispo. late tonight we could see spring of nels the south bay. overall it's cloud cover dominating the picture today. mild temps. in the mid 50s let the record: the vantage point from downtown. you will notice a lot of cloud cover. the fog has been dense in the north bay. 49. visibility from about a quarter mile to around nothing in petaluma. concord checking in at 54. in the sierra nevada it is going to be a mild day today with high snow levels. tonight that system could spread some rain. snow levels at about 7:000 feet. maybe the higher passes. a few areas of some wet snow. but really waiting until next week when week add to the snowpack in the sierra nevada. patchy dense fog. a mild to muggy yach.

more sunshine tomorrow, partly cloudy. and then a wet and cooler pattern develops next week. as we look at the forecast an nation throughout the morning hours. it looks like the santa cruz mountains, monterey could see some rain. but this quickly begins to push to the south. it's not out of the question that we will see a few areas of sprinkles along the south bay, the santa cruz mountains, more than likely it's going to be a lot of cloud cover that will take us through the rest of the day. boo by tomorrow the cloud cover thins out and we will look for a look for a break and allow the sunshine and temperatures to come up. rainfall totals through sunday. .001. then as we go into next week it looks like almost every day we will see some rain. this is monday nto tuesday. a break on wednesday. wednesday night into thursday, look like heavier rain. a colder system behind thursday's system into friday. it looks like a active week with colder systems towards the end

we have low clouds, high cloudy skies and some fog. be careful if you are head hadded out especially along the north bay and along the coast. 54 in mountain view and "gma." here's the visibility in miles. petaluma and santa rosa along with the coast just a mile. three miles, napa. and livermore at about eight miles. 10:00 today we are holding onto the clouds. mid to upper 50s. but as we go through the afternoon it is a mild to muggy afternoon with sixty arriving and plenty of cloud cover. could see a few sprinkles far south through the overnight hours. but we are looking at more clouds than precip throughout the weekend. maybe .001 in the south bay. everyone tonight needs to spring forward. we wake up to it a larry sunrise and sunset tomorrow. we lose that hour of sleep. but we will gain in the rainfall department. we will talk about it in my accuweather seven-day forecast coming up in a few minutes, chris. >> lisa, thank. now to an update on our top story, the hostage situation at a yountville veterans home.

their lives to helping the country's veterans. reporting live in yountville, abc7 news. carlos, thank you. this all started with a shooting at the veterans home of california around 10:30 yesterday morning. here's a quick listen of what we heard on the scanner. >> it is a possible active shooter. subject with a rifle holdin three people hostage. that was just part of the initial dispatch on this case. we have some new drone video that gives you a better idea of the size of the veterans facility. it is the largest of its kind in the united states. from this video you can see it's more like a college catch us. it opened back in 1884. there is a theater, baseball stadium, bowling alley, library, creative arts center, and a chappell on campus. the facility helps service members from world war ii to the wars in iraq and afghanistan. congresswoman nancy pelosi is responding to the tragedy. she says our prayers go to the

families and loved ones of the selfless caregivers whose lives were cruelly cut short. and we send our profound gratitude to the first responders for their heroic efforts. if you would like to honor the victims go to our abc7 news facebook page and share this badge. to developing news out of southern california, where one center was killed and another is in serious condition this morning after being shot during a barricade situation in pomona. new video this morning shows the procession for the fallen officer. police say they tried to stop a suspect who was driving recklessly but he didn't stop that led to a brief chase until the suspect crashed into another car, then ran into an apartment complex. he then barricaded himself inside of a bedroom. officers tried to contact him but he opened fire and hit two of them. both were taken to the hospital, where one of them died. the suspect has not been taken into custody. s.w.a.t. officers are still at the scene. it has been an unprecedented

week in politics. you have likely heard the highly charged attacks from president trump toward california democrats. but how much of an impact will those comments make in this year's midterm elections? >> they say 85% of them were criminals and had criminal records. and the mayor of oakland went out and she -- she went out and warned them all. >> reporter: the trump administration upset over california's sanctuary status as well as oakland mayor libby schaaf's decision to inform the number of i.c.e. raids being conducted in her community. >> here's my message to mayor schaaf. how dare you, how dare you needlessly endanger the lives of our law enforcement officers to promote a radical open borders ajen re de. >> reporter: many people keeping close watch including this research fellow at the hoover institution at stanford. >> republicans in california on immigration are just as conservative as republicans in oklahoma or other states that they might think are more conservative.

to the extent that the president talks about immigration out here, it is an issue that will unify republicans to a large degree. >> reporter: some say the attacks could turn out to be a gift to the california democratic party in terms of voter outreach and fund-raising. >> the long term sort of political impacts, what i think these attacks ought to fail to recognize is that california politicians are responding to the median voter here the state. so they are actually delivering good representation for california voters. >> reporter: president trump will visit san diego next week to inspect prototypes for his border wall arc move that will play to his base. >> we have latino candidates that are being prompted in part by president trump's policies. they are using that in their speeches to encourage the community to come out. conservative commentator ann coulter says she is coming to the bay area next week. the liberty forum of silicon

this morning, many people across the country are enjoying a digital detox. today is the national day of unplugging. organizers say the 24-hour break from technology highlights the value of disconnecting from our digital devices to connect with ourselves, our loved ones, and our communities. tomorrow marks the return of sunday streets in san francisco. the community event will shut down a stretch of valencia street to cars between debows avenue and 26th street. people can walk around, enjoy the neighborhood and support local businesses. sunday streets takes place in different parts of the city and is enjoying its tenth year. back to that digtdal detox. one day, one day i look forward to doing that. i don't think my bosses would be happy though if i didn't pick up the phone.

and the santa cruz mountains. more this activity could arrive tonight of the. it is going to miss san francisco and the north bay. but we are planning on the fog and the clouds throughout the morning hours. by the arch we are still cloudy. could see sprinkles mainly in the south bay tonight. next week looks unsettled with several storm systems headed our way. mild and then cold. so it also means a big impact in the sierra nevada. a live look outside. you will notice the gold en gat bridge where it is certainly foggy and visibility to be next to north. north of here, santa rosa, petaluma, live doppler showing a few returns off shore. some of this is reported as sprinkles. most of it is a lot of cloud cover. as we go to the south you can see the darker shading of green here. that will continue to push along theest could. it's going to bring wet weather from monterey to the south. maybe a quarter of an inch. they certainly he had. >> it there. we are looking at a bit of a

breeze. over all the winds are very light and the temperatures are almost the same as the dew point. mild out there, to muggy. 52 oakland. san francisco 54. gilroy is at 51. mount tam shows the layering of the clouds. looks like it's going to be gray for the host part in the north bay. so it's been mild out there. and today numbers will make it into the 60s in spots. but before then we still have those low clouds that are hugging the coast and looking at just a mile visibility along the shoreline. better in the south bay. san carlos airport reporting six mile visibility. noontime, look at the rainline. it's awfully close. boulder creek, santa cruz mountains. as we go through the rest of the day it sinks south and pulls away. so we are looking at cloudy afternoon. and as we go through the overnight hours, if you have plans tonight, it will be cloudy into your sunday. the clouds pull back.

so we will see a little bit more sun. rainfall totals through tomorrow, you can see a little bit here, .01. through sunday night we will be lucky if we see that. maybe .04 in the santa cruz mountains. but it's next week that's looking pretty impressive with monday night beginning with the first rain. it takes us through tuesday modern. we see a break into wednesday. and then by wednesday night into thursday, this is the heavier system that could bring about an inch of rain. this system alone. it is a warm one. behind it we have those low snow levels, a much colder system and we are looking at the rain continuing through friday. so that will be good news if we see all of that. upper 60s in san jose today. could see some showers from morgan hill to gilroy. 64 on the peninsula. looking at about 62 downtown san francisco. plenty of cloud cover. 64 arinne de. when you head inland we are looking at mid 60s in antioch and livermore. the overnight lows tonight with the cloud cover, mild.
