they poured out their hearts to veterans. during the time i was here it was kind of a hard time for me, you know, but they were the ones always giving us hope. and there are so many of us that they helped. they dedicated their lives to help us. it was just sad to see them go that way. >> tonight graduates of the pathway home in yountville are returning to say good-bye to three beloved women who dedicated their lives to helping veterans like the one who took their lives. it was a somber evening for a small north bay community. good evening. i'm eric thomas. >> and i'm dion lim. tonight we are learning more about the three women killed at the pathway home in yountville one day ago. and the veteran who took their lives. >> these are the three victims. jennifer golick, jennifer

gonzales and christine loeber. >> all of them died yesterday after being taken hostage by albert wong who investigators say then turned the gun by himself. jennifer golick leaves behind a his band and 7-year-old daughter. christine loeber dedicated her life to helping people heal. jennifer gonzales was seven months pregnant. >> tonight her husband said she will always be remembered for her unconditional love and giving heart. she said they died doing the work they were so passionate about. a memorial is planned for later this month to honor the three women who touched so many lives. >> we do have live team coverage tonight from yountville. let's begin tonight with abc 7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian live from where that memorial will take place. lisa. >> reporter: dion, the theater is just a few yards away from the crime scene. it is on the grounds of the veterans home. it will be easy for the community that way. the community that these women loved to attend.

>> dear god, please bless their families with peace. >> reporter: pathway home graduate shawn foster knew he had to come here tonight. the non-profit's executive director, christine loeber, was his therapist, and jennifer golick was a friend. >> all i know is that people do suffer from all kinds of stuff. i know i did for a while. but those are some of the ladies that helped me get my life back. >> this was his refuge. this was help, you know, when he was coming back from iraq and was struggling and going through? moments. >> reporter: the loss hasn't fully registered for them though evidence of what transpired friday inside madison hall is everywhere. the non-profit's board held an emergency meeting to ensure treatment for the remaining six vets who live here will continue off-site. >> the mission of the pathway home is more important than ever. and i think if anything this incident demonstrates how crucial this work is.

>> reporter: larry kramer personally knew all three mental health workers who were shot and killed. he's helping organize a community forum in yountville this week to discuss mental health and violence and a memorial at lincoln theater. all of these veterans home residents plan to attend. >> i didn't know them personally. but from what i know about them is that they were very good people. they tried to help veterans. >> path raye home has established the three brave women fund to help all three families. and a memorial will take place once again in the theater behind me on monday march 19th at 6:00 and the public is invited. for more information on the event as well as on the fund just go to our website, abc 7 news.com. live in yountville tonight, lisa amin gulezian, abc 7 news. >> all right, lisa, much appreciated. thank you. now, meantime tonight, we are learning more about what led up to albert wong's attack on the program and the people who had worked to help him. >> abc 7 news reporter katie utehs is live outside the

pathway home. katie? >> reporter: state senator bill dodd tells me that albert wong needed more help than pathway was able to provide him and they referred him to outside services for additional treatment. dodd also says the three women who were killed were likely targeted because of their close involvement with wong's treatment. a november picture of the pathway home's executive director christine loeber shows no signs of impending trouble. albert wong, who killed loeber and two other women, is seen smiling alongside others. but two weeks ago wong left the program for post-9/11 veterans. >> the way to get more treatment was a referring, which they kind of indicated to him a better pathway for his future 1/4 'apparently obviously didn't like it. >> reporter: the state senator says wong was struggling within the program. >> if you have someone who can't work within the system it makes

it difficult for everybody to get better. >> was that the case with wong? >> that's my understanding. >> reporter: investigators have closely guarded details of the case. we spoke with witness sandra woodford, a volunteer and veteran herself. >> what i heard first was a burst of gunfire. at least 12 shots. >> reporter: she and others locked down in the nearby creative arts building. >> one having an assault weapon aimed at the upper level, like up on the second floor. one had a camera on an extension. >> reporter: dodd says he does not believe negotiators ever established contact with wong, who also killed doctors jen golick and jennifer gonzalez sue-shirriba. >> i've seen ptsb patients go off. it's not unusual. it's not rare. it's infrequent, thank goodness. >> reporter: the pathway home is a non-profit and largely funded by local support. dodd says the incident

underscores the need for expanded veteran care. in yountville katie utehs, abc 7 news. also tonight, i visited the millbrae couple who took the shooter albert wong in for several years when he was a child. they were understandably shaken and mentally exhausted. >> served his country. protect our freedom. >> sissy and matthew sure became albert wong's legal guardians when albert was just 8 years old. his father had died and his mother too sick battling cancer to care for him. the sures say they never could have imagined wong responsible for a hostage situation and the deaths of three women at the veterans home. >> such a happy young man. >> reporter: a decorated veteran, wong served as an army rifleman in afghanistan from 2011 to 2012. the sures say when wong came back he had trouble sleeping and

would recount the horrors of war. >> they had to look out for each other's lives. he saw what you see that you think you only see in the movies. albert had to see that. >> reporter: along with mourning the loss of the three women killed in friday's standoff, yountville's mayor also grieved the man who was responsible. >> we also lost one of our that resulted in the terrible tragedy we all experienced here. >> that's why again -- >> we were shocked. >> yeah. to watch that. that's just not albert. >> so bad for all the families. >> sissy and matthew told me they last saw albert about a year ago and that albert had plans to go to school and to get a degree in computers. president trump responded to the tragedy. he tweeted this morning, "we are deeply saddened by the tragic situation in yountville and mourn the loss of three incredible women who cared for

our veterans." tonight friends and family are remembering those three brave women who had their lives cut short too soon. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard spoke with a friend of one of the victims. emotions are still raw tonight. >> she was just a really generous and kind person. >> reporter: cindy o'brien hugged neighbors outside the home of her close friend christine loeber. she left an orchid at her doorstep. loeber was killed friday at the veterans home of california. >> it's just so tragic that this actually happened. at the hands of, you know, somebody that she was originally trying to help. >> reporter: loeber was the executive director of the pathway home. a non-profit treating veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress. the gunman, albert wong, an army vet, was a former client. police say wong took loeber and two others hostage. 33-year-old jennifer gonzalez shereba and jennifer golick, a therapist.

golick's brother told us off camera she was -- her family is devastated. >> we lost three beautiful wonderful women. let's hope that the message goes out that we just need to help these guys with ptsd more and more so this doesn't happen again. >> reporter: cindy o'brien is haunted by a conversation about ptsd she once had with loeber. >> i did ask her when we first became friends if she ever worried about something like this happening. she was very brave and never really took that into consideration i don't think. >> three women dedicated to helping war vets heal, gone too soon. in napa county cornell barnard, abc 7 news. >> christine loeber was also an instructor at yoga one was the studio was in petaluma. the owner remembers her fondly. >> christine was an incredible teacher. she was an incredible human being. she just had an ease with people. and we've certainly lost someone

developing news now in the east bay. concord police shot a suspect during a traffic stop this evening. we're told it happened at about 5:30 p.m. on allegro avenue near clayton road. investigators say the man had a warrant out for his arrest and as officers tried to take him into custody he took off running. that's when an officer opened fire. the suspect has been taken to the hospital. his condition not known at this time. concord police say he is 40 years old and from antioch. a man suspected of shooting two officers, killing one of them, is in custody after a

16-hour standoff. following a chase last night, the gunman shot an officer through a door, then shot a second officer in the face who was trying to pull his comrade to safety. the suspect finally gave himself up within the last few hours or so. the officer has been identified as 30-year-old gregory casillas. pomona's chief of police said casillas will not be forgotten. >> it certainly is a sad day for the pomona police department. it's a sad day for our community. and it's a sad day for law enforcement in general. our pomona officers were out doing what they always do, putting themselves in harm's way to protect pomona, a community we love. >> law enforcement saluted casillas as his body pulled into the police station. the other officer is in serious but stable condition after surgery. president trump used his weekly address to once again attack oakland and the state of california. >> and last week the mayor of oakland warned criminal aliens of a coming i.c.e. enforcement

action, giving them time to scatter and hide from authorities. the mayor's conduct directly threatened the safety of federal immigration officers and the law-abiding americans in her community. the state of california is sheltering dangerous criminals in a brazen and lawless attack on our constitutional system of government. >> we have yet to hear a response to these latest comments from either oakland mayor libby schaaf or governor jerry brown. an heroic rescue in the south bay. a man saves a woman just moments before her house went up in flames. that fire engulfed the home on bel air avenue in san jose just before 11:00 in the morning. the man says he heard what he thought was a car crash, went outside and saw the home just split in two. he called out to see if anyone was inside and heard the woman respond. >> i was able to be in there left-wing enough to get in and get her out. i was in sandals and shorts but in a moment like that your adrenaline is rushing you don't feel or see anything. >> about 30 seconds later he

says the house caught fire. both he and his neighbor are doing okay. >> we were able to get out. she was fine. she was stable. she was definitely in -- i mean, as you can imagine, a fair amount of shock. >> he says the woman is in her 70s or maybe 80s and told him she was in the bathroom when the explosion happened. the cause is under investigation. the national park service has a fun reminder to spring forward for daylight saving time. >> yeah. it posted this short video on twitter you see. that is a fox springing into the air. wait for it. diving into the snow hunting prey. now, as humans we have to spring forward at 2:00 a.m. not quite the same as this. >> i don't look anything like that when i lose an hour's sleep, which is going to happen. >> i thought you were going to saying? about foxy. >> me? >> i don't know. >> we certainly won't be diving into the snow. but there's some rain on the way. >> that's good to hear. >> but not just as we move into daylight saving time. let's take a look at what's happening. live doppler 7. we have a little fog developing along coastline and moving

locally out over the bay. and that pattern will continue during the overnight hours. here's a live view from our rooftop camera here at abc 7 moving along the embarcadero under partly cloudy skies. current temperature readings 48 degrees here in san francisco and across the bay. low to mid 50s in mountain view, san jose. 46 in gilroy, 48 at half moon bay. this is the view from our abc 7 exploratorium camera. looking back at san francisco's skyline or at least a portion of it. 45 degrees right now in sapta rosa napa 41, upper 40s at novato and fairfield. 51 at concord and 46 at livermore. live view from aur sutro tower camera. and on this view you can see this little finger of fog just beginning to move out over the city right now. and these are our forecast features. we'll see fog near the coast and bay overnight. mostly sunny and mild tomorrow but rain arrives on monday and we're going to have wet and cooler weather for virtually all of next week. overnight, though, as the fog expands locally across the bay and inland we'll see low temperatures mainly in the mid to upper 40s and we advance our

timekeeping devices, clocks, watches, or mobile devices, ahead one hour as we spring forward to daylight saving time overnight. the sunset this evening at 6:12. it'll set tomorrow evening at 7:13. so we gain that evening daylight. down in the south bay look for high temperatures under mostly sunny skies in the low 70s. on the peninsula we'll see highs in the upper 60s to right around 70 at most locations. not a very wide range of highs there tomorrow in the peninsula. on the coast look for mid 60s, 64 pacifica, 65 half moon bay. in and around san francisco highs in the mid up toer 60s to about 68 degrees downtown. north bay highs 71 petaluma, 72 santa rosa, 70 at sonoma. over in the near east bay we'll see highs of 69 at berkeley 70 oakland, 69 at newark. the inland east a will be a little milder with highs in the low 70s at walnut creek, san ramon and pleasanton. now, let's take a look at our forecast animation starting at midnight tonight or 12 a.m. tomorrow. and we'll see mainly clear skies tomorrow morning. it will be a mostly sunny day

throughout the early part of the day but in the late afternoon, early evening we'll see a surge of clouds coming up from the south and by late tomorrow into early monday morning we'll see spots of moisture popping up there. the morning commute on monday will be mainly dry but there will be pockets of showers. there may be areas of wet pavement and later in the day we'll see the showers become a bit more widespread. that approaching storm that moves in on monday ranks 1 on the storm impact scale. a storm of light intensity producing mainly light rain and scattered showers. most locations will see less than half an inch of rain from that -- less than a tenth of app inch, i beg your pardon, of rain from that system. but look at the week ahead. it's going to be rainy and stormy for most the week. starting on tuesday it gets colder with showers on tuesday. wet and breezy on wednesday. storms intensify tlurs and friday ranking 2 on the storm impact scale with lingering pshowers into next saturday. it's going to be a week of wild, wet, wacky weather. >> how many more ws do you have? >> that's it. i'm out of w introducing the prime rib cheesesteak

good evening. in the heyday of the 49ers-seahawks rivalry richard sherman was public enemy number one in these parts. but as of today he's a proud member of the red and gold. seattle caught him and today sherman signed with the 49ers. remember sherman once ate his thanksgiving turkey at the 50 yard line at levi's stadium? well, now it's his new home after agreeing to a reported three-year deal worth $39 million including a $5 million signing bonus. sherman tore his achilles tendon last november but the niners believe he's going to be ready for training camp.
