you know, i was saying it the other day, because we're doing a tremendous amount of work in space. i said, maybe we need a new force, the space force. i said what a great idea, maybe we'll do that. >> now earlier in the day, president trump inspected eight prototypes for a border wall he wants to build at the united states and mention kxico border. mr. donald trutrump said he wou see it be an unscaleable wall and also a see through wall. thanks very much. any california company that helps build the wall would be penalized under legislation sponsored by san francisco democratic assembly man phil ting. he talked to carol tyler today and she is in the newsroom with the story.

>> reporter: assembly member ting is just the latest politician to take up the fight, opposing that $25 billion slated for the border wall. he wants to discourage companies from contracting or subcontracting to build the wall. president trump looking at eight prototypes today said the state of california is in his words begging the president to build his border wall. but the a bill in the legislature calls for anybody participating in building the border wall to be punished. >> if you want to build this border wall, you can't be part of our tax breaks or incentives. >> reporter: more than 375 firms nationwide have expressed interest in working on the wall. the tax breaks california companies would for fit under his legislation include a break for hiring new employees and a credit for buying manufacturing

and research equipment. it's the latest effort by a politician to halt what the president describes as his big, beautiful border wall. as democratic strategy member calls the bill a stunt. >> i'm sure there will be enough companies outside of california to build that wall. it's empty rhetoric, because all it will be doing is denying california employees and california corporations the ability to earn a living in a legal way. >> mexico is the united states biggest trading partners. he says the states should be building bridges not walls. >> these fights are challenging. i think the one thing we won't do is to stop fighting. >> he expects his bill to be heard in committee next month. >> and while promoting the border wall today, president trump took a moment to criticize the governor's leadership of the state. >> i think the governor's doing a terrible job running the state

and tomorrow, as you take a look at live doppler 7, you will notice there are very few showers out there, we'll get you down to street level radar. also heading into the south bay, around kurtner avenue, and san jose, you have some moist air there. there is a system that is spinning, this is the second half of the system that is going to come in, and as we get a closer look here, we're really watching for the potential for thunderstorms. a lightning strike has been reported just southwest of san francisco. there's been a few strikes off the northern california coast, on our storm impact scale, this is a level 1, tonight and tomorrow, showers at times and some heavy downpours. your rain boots, this isn't the only storm we're tracking. >> you can track the rain and thunderstorms where you live with the abc7 news app, it has live doppler 7 so you can get hour by hour conditions in your neighborhood.

the chp says rain and wet roads may have been factors in a crash that involved a pittsburgh police unit. abc7 news was in pittsburgh when a p.d. canine unit and a prius wound up in a ditch. both drivers were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. the canine was not hurt. seven men have been arrested for a string of violent burgl y burglaries resulting in a string of home invasion robberies. three of the men were arrested at sfo last night trying to catch a flight back to the east coast. the sonoma sheriff says this was a cross country mission to rob north bay marijuana growers, but none of the victims were involved in growing or selling marijuana. >> want nothing to do with growing, cultivating, selling marijuana and now we have had several residents that are being tied up and pistol whipped and

victimized, no liability of their own. >> a similar string of marijuana-related burglaries happened in santa rosa last february. it one left a homeowner dead. five suspects in that case all from the east coast have been charged. united airlines is apologizing after a dog died on a flight yesterday. a flight attendant insisted on it and told a mother and her two daughters the pet would be okay. the passenger says the mother agreed that the dog should stay in the overhead bin the entire flight and never received any food or water. a spokesperson said that this is a tragic accident that should never have occurred as pets should never been placed in the overhead bin. an oakland coffee shop's % stance on law enforcement. they're refusing to serve uniformed police officers.

since word got out, people have responded both for and against. >> reporter: they have been serving up controversy over who they refuse to serve. last month, an oak land police sergeant was turned away. >> not only did they not want to talk to him, but they wouldn't even sell him a cup of coffee. >> reporter: the oakland police officers association sent the shop a letter hoping to start a dialogue, they're still waiting for a response, but reaction from the community has been swift. >> we have been overwhelmed with the reaction and businesses have been writing to us, a lot of messages from people in emails, we had a woman and her mother show up in downtown oakland to provide coffee and travelers to the entire lineup. >> t >>. >> reporter: the coffee shop is closed today and the owners have declined to comment on their stance. until death posted their

>> reporter: san francisco is a sanctuary city, as such, the department has broad restrictions against cooperating with i.c.e. acts. the sheriff says it was a mistake and she holds herself accountable. >> i was pretty shocked to hear that it had happened and i was extremely disappointed. >> i.c.e. agents interviewed one inmate, the other refused to cooperate. both are clients of this attorney's office. he said i.c.e. placed a federal detainer on the one who did talk to them. >> even if he is releaeased fro custody, i.c.e. would have a detainer and be able to keep him in custody. >> reporter: he said that the inmates called them while the i.c.e. agents were there. >> they approached one of the deputies and said why are you letting i.c.e. agents in? and he was told we treat i.c.e.

agents just like anyone else. >> hennessy says she's releasing a department bulletin. >> that bulletin is being read to everyone at the beginning of every shift for seven days a week. >> reporter: she says i.c.e. agents returned to the jail yesterday and requested yet another interview with an inmate, this time they were question nyed. just a short time ago we learned the latest effort to extend the immigration program known as daca was blocked in the u.s. senate. the issue has led to protests all over the bay area in recent months. this is the second time in a week the -- their fate is is in limbo tonight with no sign of a deal on capitol hill. california lawmakers are looking to chart a much different course than the trump administration when it comes to trade relationships with china. lawmakers talked about the need

to strengthen and expand business relationships with the country at an assembly hearing in sacramento today. this comes even as the trump administration explores tariffs and other economic penalties against china for what it's calling unfair trade practices. >> it remains the largest market and the largest trade partner of the state of california, the largest international tourist source and the international students of california. >> china and california exchange more than 1$175 billion worth o goods last year, that's according to to the consulate's office. students here and across the bay area and the country are getting ready to stage walkouts to demand tighter gun control one month after the shooting in parkland, florida. bay area schools are preparing for walkouts of their own. abc7 news leslie brinkley met

with young students in oakland who staged their own walkout today. >> reporter: yuoung students cae armed with big ideas at joaquin elementary school in oakland, they got creative and passionate and loud. >> it was a big, kind of reality check for me when they started asking me questions about why we were having a lock down drill and so we started having conversations as a school about why is it important for our school to be save. >> reporter: the idea inspired today's march. oakland unified school district said they are supporting students walkout tomorrow as long as they stay on campus. >> we decided as a result of what's been happening around the nation that we wanted to provide students with some curriculum around education being a civil right.

boulevard across highway 101, a slippery evening commute. heading into oakland, piedmont, also wet. this is a light level 1 system, tonight through tomorrow, you'll see showers at times, could see an isolated downpour and there is a possibility of a thunderstorm or two. very isolated at best. 24-hour rain totals look like this, .21 in san jose, .71 in san francisco. just over an inch in fairfield about half an inch of rain. in the sierra, the snow has been coming down, what a gorgeous shot right now from tahoe, they are chaining up across all roads except for highway state road 4 heading into the mountains, so this is not a good idea to travel up there.

the winter storm is in effect until 5:00 p.m. tomorrow night. it becomes a winter storm watch for thursday afternoon to friday night. so the snow levels will be lowering as we head into that thursday-friday time period. they'll measuring the snow in feet. donner about 36 inches, they need the snow, as you know. temperatures right now, in the 40s through the 60s. 49 in los gatos, but 60s in concord. cooler day today with the clouds still stacked up. showers, possibly thunder through tomorrow. a cold storm will lower the snow levels to 3,000 feet. 6:00 tonight, a spotty shower or two around the east bay, as we head into 11:00 p.m., a more organized light band of showers moves onshore. then we get into your morning commute, it's going to light and spotty around 5:00 a.m. in the hills, the snow level

will be coming down early on wednesday morning. spotty showers, it's pretty light and widespread. around noontime we started to see the rain showers moving in. hang on to the umbrellas, you're going to need them. the showers continue, here in the bay area, we'll go with a thunderstorm throughout, isolated at best. if those thunderstorms do develop, could see some hail along with it as well. in terms of rainfall totals, it's going to vary quite a bit from .20 inch up to an inch in ukiah. tomorrow afternoon, temperatures will be in the 50s, breezy with scattered showers across the bay area, here's a look at the accuweather 7-day forecast, it's a level 1 system for your wednesday. cold storm, that one's going to drop the snow level, we'll see snow over our highest peaks, especially heading into friday, and then early morning showers
