good morning. it's 5:00 a.m. on this wednesday, march 14th. >> you're never more than seven minutes away from your accuweather forecast. don't put away your umbrella just yet, right, mike? >> yes, that is a good point. because we have rain today, tomorrow and even friday. or at least chances of it. not all of us getting rain this morning. it's knot going to be quiet like yesterday where it was a complete washout during the commute. you can see scattered showers from the san mateo bridge northward. we're going to put a 1 on the storm impact scale for the scattered showers. chance of lightning and hail as we head into the latter parts of the morning and afternoon hours. we had light showers roll through. you'll notice also, how much cooler is it this morning.

upper 40s and low to mid-50 from noon to 4:00 in my accuweather 12-hour planner. it's almost over. we'll need the sunglasses today. may see rainbows also, alexis. >> i hope we do, mike. soggy conditions on the emeryville camera. the traffic coming toward us is trying to get to the bay bridge most likely. no metering lights yet. no major delays but things are slowly starting to fill in. the only really big slowdown so far today was westbound 205 to 580. we had a crash in tracy near mountain house p that cleared up. dublin to mission boulevard looks great at 14 minutes. northbound 85 between 101 and cupertino. no delays. in the green at 16 minutes. thanks, alexis. you won't believe this video. you're going to see a driver hit a 12-year-old girl and seconds later, he keeps going without helping her.

>> san jose police need your help to track down that driver. abc 7 news reporter matt keller live for us in san jose. matt? >> reporter: natasha, this is the crosswalk the 12-year-old girl was walking in on monday morning when she was hit by that car. thankfully, she's okay. some may find this video disturbing. this is the surveillance video. it happened monday morning. it appears the light turns green and pedestrians traveling on north 17th street at east julian street. you can see the girl started walking but the car doesn't yield to her and hits her. the girl climbs up to her knees as a car coming the other direction stops and that driver gets out and appears to help the girl. she was taken to the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. a four-door toyota camry. another shows it pull over on julian before taking off. police describe the hit and run driver as a woman in her 40s or

ith police to ensure students get there safely. we do want to thank everyone who reached out to abc 7 news about walkouts at your schools. please share your experience on social media and use the #walk out bay area to feature them on air and online. it's 5:04 now. a student is recovering from injury when a teacher accident lip fired a gun inside a classroom. this was during a public safety class. he also serves as a reserve officer in a nearby city. he was placed on leave. the student is expected to fully recover. the science world is mourning the loss of stephen hawking who passed away at the age of 76. the renowned scientist overcame a debilitating disease to probe the mysteries of the universe. abc news reporter, gloria riviera has a look at his amazing life. >> stephen hawking will be remembered as a genius who did

not let his disease stop him. >> i have had a.l.s. for practically all of my adult life. yet it has not prevented me from having a very attractive family and being successful in my work. >> hawking has been compared to albert einstein and isaac newton. his best selling book, a brief history of time, tackles black holes and the big bang theory, subjects he spent his life exploring. in 2004, he conceded a mistake on black holes. instead of destroying everything that falls into them, he found they allow critical information to get out. >> so we can be sure of the past and we can predict the future. >> hawking was born in 1942. early on, he displayed a love of science. in his early 20s, already a physics phenom at cambridge university, hawking was first diagnosed with aim trope i can lateral sclerosis, a.l.s. also known as lou gehrig's

overstate representative rick saah cone, a republican. lamb has declared victory even though a few thousand absentee ballots have yet to be counted. the president carried the district by 20 points in november. state election officials say it could be weeks before an official result is announced. under pennsylvania law, there is no recount. back to you guys. happening today, the san francisco police commission is scheduled to discuss how police officers use tasers. the sfpd has been grapted permission to use the weapons. the question is how to regulate that use. commissioners may vote to -- it would establish less restrictive guidelines for when the stun gun may be deployed. critics see it as a way to go beyond the authority. london breed will no longer appear on shelters.

we're having a tough time bouncing back. 12 miles an hour approaching that interchange. up to 18 at altamont pass. unfortunately, that is definitely our slowest spot. eastbound side of 580, we have a new crash reported. sounds like one vehicle lost control and went into the guardrail. now off on the shoulder. eastbound 37, just before the fairgrounds, we have a solo vehicle crash reported. sounds like two other vehicles collided with that. an update on that at 5:20. a puppy dies on a flight to new york city. what the heartbroken family says they were forced to do that caused its death. a police officer is fired after a deadly shooting. why his union says he was following his training. happening

german chancellor angela merkel is starting her fourth term. the 63-year-old german leader has changed some of her cabinet to start this term. merkel has been the leader of germany since 2005. reggie? >> thanks, jessica. youtube is getting ready to introduce a new tool. videos containing conspiracy theories about events like the moon landing will include texts from wikipedia providing facts that counter the theory. the move comes weeks after dpoog will-owned youtube was criticized for promoting videos of the trending section of their fight that claimed a survivor of the shooting in parkland, florida was a paid actor. that was found to be not true. san francisco's police chief facing criticism after firing a rookie officer who shot and killed an unarmed carjacking suspect. the former officer had been on the job four days when he shot someone at the end of a car

chase. the head of the union said the rookie followed the training he had just received at the academy. a spokesman confirms the officer is no longer there but can't provide more details. union leaders are demanding a hearing to reveal the facts in the hearing. a short police chase in napa. the sheriff says they attempted to pull over a man who is a suspect in two shootings in san francisco. deputies say as the driver left the scene, he threw items out of the window. an ar-15, a bag containing ammunition clips, a pistol loaded with illegal bullets, as well as a ski mask and a kevlar vest. police eventually arrested the man from san mateo county. united airlines calling a dog's death in an overhead bin a tragic accident. >> the family is demanding answers. details now from linsey davis. >> a family trip ends in a nightmare after they discover their 10--month-old puppy dead upon landing at laguardia's

airport. >> he's a member of our family. he was like my brother to me. >> the family says the flight attendant made them put the bag with the dog in it in the overhead bin during the flight. united's policy say they should be in kennel bags under the seat in front of them. the airlines september condolences saying this never should have occurred. pets should never be in the overhead bin. we assume responsibility. >> the flight attendant seemed shocked and frazzled when the flight landed and did not know there was a dog in the bag. we'll have much more on this story and how you can fly safely with your pet at 7:00 a.m. with your gma first look, i'm linsey davis, abc news, new york. political insiders tell the associated press that president trump is not done shaking up his cabinet and has his eye on the department of veteras affairs. currently, david shulkin holds the top spot. but he's facing criticism within his own department.

see if the metering lights are on for the bay bridge toll plaza. it looks like they are. they are filling in very quickly. if not, they will be any minute. here's a look at the rest of the drive into san francisco. a little bit of stop-and-go traffic approaching treasure island. we'll look at drive times coming up before 5:30. now breaking news. some breaking news coming in. student walkouts have begun across the country. this is the washington, d.c. area. you see students are gathering in a parking lot of a high school. i have seen some of them holding signs. but for the most part just gathering right now in the parking lot. this is all part of a national move to protest gun violence following the florida high school shooting in parkland, florida. we've been telling you about this throughout our newscast. some walkouts expected here in the bay area as well. this is in washington, d.c. area. you'll remember that that parkland, florida, shooting, deadly shooting at a high school

minutes ago. i brought it to you live when they were gathered on campus a few minutes ago. we saw them holding signs. you can see that as they do walk through the streets right now. all of this is part of a national move to protest gun violence. following the deadly florida high school shooting in parkland, florida, you'll remember that shooting was exactly one month ago. of course, we're tracking this throughout the country, natasha and reggie. jessica, thank you. bay area schools preparing for the walkouts. >> at 10:00 a.m. our time, students will join those that you just saw calling for changes in gun policy. amy hollyfield live in union city this morning. amy? >> reporter: hi reggie. we're at james logan high school. this is the largest high school in northern california. they have 4,000 students here. they have quite a plan for the mornings. it should be an impressive sight when these students walk out. in oakland yesterday, some elementary school kids actually started practicing their

walkout. this will be happening across the nation as kids recognize the high school shooting in florida that killed 17 people. that happened one month ago today. today will be both a memorial and a stance for gun control. abc 7 news has heard from schools across the bay area as students are also learning that media can be a key part of their activism. >> they saw the news crews, knew they were spreading their message beyond our school. that was something that matters to them. >> people will see this on the news and they're going to think about it and then they're going to realize that safe schools are important. >> oakland unified school district and several other districts in the bay area say they will be supporting students today. walkouts are scheduled to start at 10:00 local time across the country. expect to see them last for 17 minutes to mark the 17 lives lost in florida. here at this high school, they're going to have a die-in to illustrate and mark those lives that were lost. reporting live in union city,

amy holly field, abc 7 news. we want to thank everyone who reached out to us about walkouts at your school. please show your experience on social media using the #walk out bay area. we can feature them on air and online. the man charged with the crimes that sparked the walkout will be in krort court this morning. he faces arraignment on 34 counts, including 17 counts of premeditated murder, one for each of the 17 people he's accused of shooting and killing at stoneman douglas high school. prosecutors filed notice they intend to seek the death penalty. cruz's lawyer said he was ready to plead guilty if they took the death penalty off the table. the only other possibility for a sentence is life in prison without parole. stephen hawking has passed away. the 76-year-old was widely considered the greatest living scientist. he worked with foal owe physicist roger penn rose to say

>> happening today, seven men face arraignment in a string of violent burglaries in the north bay. all seven suspects are from north carolina or virginia. authorities arrested three of them at sfo. the sonoma county sheriff says the suspect broke into three homes in petaluma early monday morning looking for cannabis. none of the victims was involved in growing or selling cannabis. .suspects are headed to novato where there was a manhunt for them. a similar string of marijuana-related burglaries happened last year in santa rosa. a homeowner was killed in one of the break-ins. >> 5:46 now. lyft is facing a lawsuit. the case was filed if alameda dirimiting against those them o using wheelchairs. it says the company does not offer wheelchair accessible vehicles. it has a service called access designed for people with disabilities. the plaintiffs say that the service is inadequate. uber faces a number of lawsuits
