disturbing. it happened around 8:45 monday morning. the girl was walking across the street with the car turning left on to julian. the car does not yield to her and hits her. the girl climbs back up to her knees as a car coming the other direction stops and that driver gets out and appears to help out the girl. the 12-year-old was taken to the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. as for the car that hit her, four-door toyota camry. another surveillance camera shows it pull over briefly before taking off. the driver never got out of her car. she's skriebd as a woman in her 40s or 50s. if you'd like a closer look at the video, go to abc7news.com. reporting live in san jose, matt keller, abc 7 news. very disturbing. matt, thank you. the man considered to be the world's greatest living scientist has died. stephen hawking was 76 years old. hawking redefined kos molg as a union of relativity and quantum

not just here in the bay area. we've seen these live images from silver springs, maryland. just outside the washington, d.c. area. you're seeing this wide view here because of students that actually walked off campus. they were marching through the streets. this is what it looked like a few minutes ago when we saw the really large crowds. what they're doing right now is they are actually on their way to the nation's capitol. they were at this bus terp nall, boarded, i believe, some of the mass transit to get to the nation's capital. all of this part of a move to protest gun violence in parkland, florida. i'll watch for other walkouts. a nationwide walkout. you'll remember the florida high school shooting was exactly one month ago today. this is why it's happening now. >> jessica, thank you. a student is recovering from injuries when a teacher

accidentally fired a gun inside a classroom. bullets lodged in the teen's neck after a shot hit the ceiling at seaside high school yesterday. the teacher involved works as a reserve police officer in a nearby city. he was placed on leave. the student is expected to recover. happening today, the san francisco police commission is scheduled to discuss how police officers use tasers. the sfpd has been granted permission to use electroshock weapons. the question is how to regulate that. commissioners may vote to oppose proposition h on the june ballot to establish less restrictive guidelines for when tasers may be deployed. critics see it as a way to bypass the oversight authority. the race for the next mayor of san francisco is expected to be heated. apparently, this is going too far. >> amazon now one step closer to having a drone drop off your package. >> you're never more than seven minutes away from your accuweather forecast. look at the chances of rain all the way through saturday morning the way through saturday morning and they pick up again

right now, it's squeezing out showers in the high country from skyline boulevard to santa cruz. look at that. we're up to 14 degrees cooler this morning. each in san francisco nearly double digits cooler. upper 40s to low 50s on the peninsula and out towards the coast. 50 in san francisco and san carlos and concord. 51 in oakland and hayward. temperatures were in the low 60s yesterday believe it or not. the rest of us in the mid to upper 40s. highs today, mid to upper 40s. about 54 to 59 degrees and lows tonight will be hanging around in the mid to upper 30s in the north bay with snow around lakeport and ukiah. the rest of us, upper 30s to low 40s in the east bay valley. low to mid-40s bay and coast. more rain on the way. i'll have it coming up. let look at the road. we're looking at soggy driving conditions in walnut creek. we've got road spray kicking up southbound 680. no major delays and not a ton of brake lights. everyone is moving along pretty

now breaking news from the abc 7 live desk. breaking news from the uk. theresa may just announced the nation will expel 23 diplomats from russia in the wake of an ex-spy poisoning. it's the largest of its kind since the cold war. the prime minister announced that the russian diplomats have exactly one week to leave britain. all of this comes after a nerve agent attack on a former russian spy and his daughter earlier this month. this is a video that you're seeing of the investigation into that poisoning. may also announced economic and diplomatic measures against russia, each call for the royal family not to attend soccer world cup this summer. back to you. youtube getting ready to show a new tool -- videos

here's a live look outside at the bay bridge toll plaza. metering lights on for almost an hour. they were flipped over at 5:23 this morning. typical delays approaching the maze. the rest of the area bridges looking great. westbound 580, richmond-san rafael bridge, seven minutes. westbound 84 across dumbarton bridge, looks great at ten minutes. sky 7 over a police chase in napa. they attempted to pull over a man who is a suspect in two shootings in san francisco. deputies say as the driver left the scene, he threw these items out of window. an ar-15, a bag containing ammunition clips, a pistol loaded with illegal bullets, a ski mask and kevlar vest. police eventually arrested the man from san mateo county. former first lady maria shiefr will keynote the

low to mid-50s through the afternoon hours. showers tapering. also the temperatures down nearing the upper 40s by 7:00. how is the commute this morning? here's alexis. >> i have one new issue on highway 4 initially. it was reported on the heavier side. i did confirm with chp, it's eastbound highway 4 before alhamb alhambra. possible injuries and at one point all lanes were blocked. i believe the far left lane is getting by. one of the vehicles involved is sort of dangling over a ridge. i'm keeping a close eye on this. so far, not impacting the westbound side. but eastbound, normally your safest time of day. we're seeing a delay there. westbound 80, emeryville stretch, approaching the maze. stop and go traffic. but not too bad overall. we'll look at drive times up next. bay area schools preparing for walkouts. >> at 10:00 a.m. local time, students will join students across the country to call for changes in gun policy. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live for us in

union city. good morning, amy. >> reporter: good morning, natasha. we're at the largest high school in northern california. they do have a walkout planned for today. we just met with some of the organizers just a few minutes ago. they are wearing orange, which is the color of the movement. they tell us they were worried about the rain today. but they say they will walk out even if it is raining. they are demanding actions from lawmakers. they're saying this is not political. that this is about their safety. >> i look at the pictures of the students who passed away in florida. i see myself. i see everyone in that school. all the seniors who are getting ready to go to college, the freshmen who are just fitting in, figuring out who they are. i see all of this. it's a scary thought. >> this will be happening around the bay area. in oakland, elementary school students practiced yesterday for today's walkout. the shooting in parkland,

penalty. cruz's lawyer said he was ready to plead guilty if prosecutors took the death penalty off the table. the only other option now for cruz is life in prison with no possibility of parole. acclaimed physicist stephen hawking passed away. >> he was considered the greatest living scientist. he worked to theorize that time began with the big bang and will end in black hole. he suffered from a.l.s. since 1963 and spent much of his life confined to a wheelchair. he is survived by three children an three grandchildren. >> look at this, natasha. only moments ago. apple ceo tim cook tweeted about hawking he is death using a quote from the physicist saying the greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance. it's the illusion of knowledge. then cook going on to say we will always be inspired by his life and ideas, rest in peace.

if it's not raining. damp in areas. caution on the roads today. dress warmer if you're taking mass transit. but be prepared for isolated showers and it could be a rainy day at times if you're taking a ferry. in fact, look at the school day forecast. temperatures only 46 to 50 by 7:00. low to mid-50s from 11:00 to 3:00 with showers possible. not going to be a washout today like it was for the most part yesterday. it will be much more isolated. you can see the broken area of rain during the afternoon hours with temperatures around 54 to 59 degrees. tonight each less of a chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms. even cooler than this morning. look up in the north bay, snow up there around ukiah and lickport with mid to upper 30s. low to mid 40s around the bay and the coast. more chances of rain thursday and friday. it's been a long week of commuting. looks like it will continue to be. >> it's only wednesday, right?

we've got 2 1/2 more commutes to go. we're doing okay today all things considered. >> better than yesterday, i hope? >> way better than yesterday. we had a couple dozen crashes at this time yesterday. today, a handful. better news in san jose. before you get to story road, a three-car crash that cleared to the shoulder. we have stop-and-go traffic approaching that. part of that a typical delay. also in san jose, 280 and 17, we're seeing a little bit of stop-and-go traffic on that inbound side. nothing on that stretch. drive times overall, decent westbound 80. westbound 80 across the bay bridge. 14. southbound 101, san francisco to sfo. you're in the green at ten minutes. i heard about a new crash on the peninsula. we'll check on that next. 600 people packed into an auditorium to listen to ann coulter. it was hosted by the liberty forum of silicon valley.

he spent much of the night talking about immigration. she was an early supporter of president trump but she's unhappy with his unfulfilled campaign promise to build a wall. coulter addressed getting disinvited to speak at uc berkeley after university officials said they couldn't guarantee a safe venue. >> so yeah, i kind of think i need to speak. we do live in a country with a first amendment. i hope we keep it. >> private security check every guest upon entry. they monitored the crowd. two officers from the university of colorado boulder were also there to scope out potential issues ahead of coulter's visit to their campus next week. the new safety concerns following a shooting at the yountville veterans home. a lawsuit being filed against lyft for discrimination. this is live at the new york stock exchange. we're at up about 13 points, 25,018. we'll bring another update to you next.

recent shooting in parkland, florida. today marks one month since the mass shooting. i will keep tracking the protests for you. outrage over the death of a pet in an overhead bin on united airlines flight. ten-month-old french bulldog coe kit owe was traveling from houston to new york inside a soft kennel bag. for reasons that are still unexplained, a flight attendant insisted the family show him in an overhead bin where there is little air circulation. when the plane landed in new york, three hours later, the family found his body. >> she took him out and opened the thing and she got the dog and he was -- >> he barked softly during the first part of of the flight and then stopped. united said it accepts full responsibility adding that pets should never be placed in

overhead bins. >> 6:47 now. days after the deadly shooting at a yountville veterans rehab facility, residents are requesting tighter security measures. it is no secret that guards are not armed. they have pepper spray and batons only. the entrance is wide open. a former patient, albert wong, killed three women on friday. wong was also found dead. veterans who live there are asking cal vets, the agency that runs the home, to do more. >> with no security, no gate guard, no fencing, anyone can come in here 24/7 and do some pretty nasty things if they really wanted to. >> cal vet issued a statement to abc 7 news. the safety and well-being of residents and staff are the highest priority and it will continue to be part of of the ongoing discussions. seven men face arraignment in a string of violent burglaries. all seven from north carolina or virginia. they were arrested at sfo monday night as they tried to catch a flight back to the east coast.

the sonoma county sheriff says they broke into three homes in petaluma early monday morning. they were looking for cannabis. none of the victims was involved in growing or selling cannabis. the suspects then headed to novato where there was a manhunt for them. a similar string of marijuana-related burglaries happened in santa rosa last february. a homeowner was killed in one of those break-ins. san francisco-based lyft is facing a lawsuit. the case filed in alameda county court accuses them of discriminating against those using wheelchairs. lyt does have a service called access designed for people with disabilities. but the plaintiffs say the service is inadequate. uber also faces a number of lawsuits pertaining to the lack of services offering to people with mobility challenges. toys "r" us may file papers to liquidate today. >> you need to use your gift cards immediately. the toy retailers drafted the
