live where you live, this is abc 7 news. the national school walkout is underway in the bay area. sky 7 is live over oakland technical high school, one of hundreds of demonstrations locally in a day action to demand gun control and safe schools. thank you for joining us. the student-led demonstrations stem from the mass shooting in a parkland, florida high school a month ago today. 17 people were killed. let's begin live team coverage in the bay area with amy hollyfield live at james logan high school. >> reporter: good morning. they are still going here in union city. the students full of passion. some of the teachers teary-eyed.

they started spilling out of james logan high school before 10:00 this morning. organizers were hoping for a good turnout, but say this far exceeded their expectations. >> it does blow my mind. i mean, as we walked out, i saw the narrow line of people, and it just went on and on and on, and we came in here, and i had to continue to do the chants because there were so many people coming in. >> reporter: the seniors who planned this were up before dawn this morning, practicing speeches, and meeting with us to get the word out about why they are doing this. >> we want to be safe at school or worry about the possibility or potential of an armed intruder. >> this is not a political thing. this is our safety, like, it's at a school like florida that could happen to any of us. >> reporter: remembering the 17 people shot and killed in florida a month ago with a die-in, and they had posters with those victims' pictures and names. some teachers emotional watching

their students speak out for change. >> they are stepping up in a political, powerful, peaceful way, and i'm so proud of them. >> reporter: this is the largest high school in northern california, and the message these kids received from speakers today is to go home and e-mail their representatives and make sure they vote in november. live in union city, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> amy, thank you. students on the peninsula are also marching for school safety. abc 7 news reporter matt keller has live coverage in palo alto, matt? >> reporter: it started as a l march, and now it's a rally. there's several schools here. you can see we probably got well over 1,000 students who are here holding signs, a passionate rally. this all started about 10:15. you can see the beginning of the

[ cheers and applause ] >> reporter: that's video of students on middlefield road, walking out at 10:00 this morning. the city of the park let the public know students from several area high schools including menlo and sacred school were marching in they are raising awareness about school safety and gun violence. one posted a letter in the beginning of the month expecting students to remain on campus but could not prevent them from leaving. said if students left, they would be marked absent and would not ensure their safety. obviously, hundreds, if not more than a thousand students ignored that advice and are here at el camino park for the rally. looks like they'll be here for a while. looks like the rally's scheduled

now in the woman accused of aiding and abetting her husband who killed 49 people in the nightclub in orlando, florida. prosecutors told jurors she helped her husband prepare for the massacre for weeks. defense attorneys portrayed her as a frightened battered wife abused for years. a spokesman for the family said they are relieved the trial is finally starting. ? she said that she was really looking forward to the jury hear ing the evidence because she knows a lot of things reported and leaked to the media have been untrue. >> the nightclub massacre happened in 2016. she could face life in prison. her husband, gunman, was killed in the shooting. this morning, san jose police are searching for a driver in a hit and run caught on camera. a 12-year-old girl was crossing the street when hit. thankfully, she's okay, but some find the video disturbing. we do want to warn you. it happened monday morning. you see the girl, started

walking after the light appears to turn green on north 17th street at east julien street, and you see that, the 12-year-old girlfuls hit and taken to the hospital. she is expected to recover. the car turning left did not yield and hit her. the driver stopped for a moment and took off. they described the driver as a woman in her 40s or 50s in a four-door toyota camry. anyone with information call the police. new developments after the freezer malfunction, a san francisco woman filed a lawsuit against pcf seeking compensation for eggs lost in the refrigeration failure. the company suffered a failure on march 4:th compromising a tanks storing eggs and embryos. president trump left california this morning after day long visit near san diego and los angeles. he spent part of tuesday inspecting prototypes of the border wall, and he couldn't

seattle in a heavily republican district in pennsylvania was successful because he ran on a conservative agenda with all precincts reporting, it appears the novice democrat has enough of a lead over the republican even with absentee ballots yet to be counted. this is a district president trump carried by 20 points in the 2016 election. pennsylvania does not allow for recounts, but election officials say it could be weeks before the results are certified. don't be alarmed if you see pge workers at your home. workers are conducting gas meter inspections in santa clara county this week. the company says inspections happen weekdays between 7:00 and 6:00 so that's 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. authorized employees have a photo id with a hard hat and safety vest. the inspections should be complete by early june. thousands of students walk out of class today, many keep victims in their thoughts. a look how students at stoneman

tens of thousands of students across the country participated in walkouts this morning all marching in solidarity of the victims in florida. they assembled on the football field, supporters cheering on the sidelines, and the principal commemorated the students. in washington, students rallied outside the capital and white house. a massive crowd. when the clock struck ten, they turned their backs against the white house. ♪ >> the granite bay high school band is honoring the victims with music, in this case, "amazing grace", and students say the hope is that the song will bring people closer to home, walnut creek, students gathered outside on the black top for a die-in this morning. you can see they formed a circle
