live where you live. this is abc7 news. >> investigators trying to determine the relationship between a man and a woman both of them died after report of struggle around lake merritt in oakland early this morning. thank you for joining us. i'm kristen sze. later, they discovered the body of a woman after divers went in. amy hollyfield is live on lake shore avenue with the latest. amy? >> hi, the crews weren't dealing with the rain in oakland. they were having to work in the dark and cold waters. sometimes deep sections of lake

merritt. and they only were going off of information from one witness. the struggle going on here in lake merritt at 4:15 this morning was intense enough to make someone call 9-1-1 for help. the caller said a man and a woman were in the water yelling and in an altercation. oakland police were first on the scene. >> when pd arrived on scene, they noticed a gentleman in the water who was thrashing in the water and only noticed the gentlemenm gentleman. pulled him out. >> the man was unconscious and then decide whether to look for a possible second person. >> we don't have clear confirmation if there were actually two people but the 9-1-1 caller was confident. >> they called in the coast guard and dive teams from alameda county and san francisco. >> this is a significantly large body of water, they're going to need all the assistance they can get to drag the lake and see if we can find another victim.

>> reporter: they canvassed lake merritt by boat and prepared to drag the like but soon after, they found the woman's body. oakland police later reported the man died at the hospital. they have called in homicide investigators to try and figure out why this happened. >> at this time, the only information we have is the witnesses reported there was an altercation. that's the only information we have and we encourage, if anyone was out this morning or heard anything, saw anything. please contact our homicide division. >> reporter: police have identified the man. they have not released his name, but say he is in his 40s. they have not identified the woman. they only know she was in her 20s. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> thank you. we sent out this push alert while divers were searching for the body. enable push alert for the latest

breaking news. developing news in marin county where a sheriff's department wdeputy was killed this morning at point reyes station. the deputy responding to a 9-1-1 call when he lost control of his car on a curve. he was flown to petaluma valley hospital where he later died. the marin county sheriff is scheduled to release more details this afternoon. >> showers are moving through the bay area again this morning. certainly did here in san francisco after a brief respite, more are coming our way. especially depending on where you are. meteorologist mike nicco has a first look at the forecast. >> we'll open our weather window on the north bay. that's where it's been raining lightly. in san rafael on 101. a 1 for today and tomorrow. local breezes. local downpours. that could include hail just like they did yesterday and do have the possibility of lightning and snow down to about 3500 feet. right now, it's all liquid but

you could see it's mainly on the light side as we're seeing green on live doppler 7 from hayward and back towards san francisco. and over the next six hours, i expect the coverage to pick up in the intensity as the evening commute is going to be a little bit tougher than it was this morning to get around. we'll take an hour by hour look at this coming up and it looks like the weekend may be drying out even more. fingers crossed. >> thank you, mike. a developing news. a man in the hospital after the police chase ended with this crash. chp officers began following an suv that was driving recklessly around 3:30 this morning. they pursue the driver on i-80 eastbound and to local streets in san pablo. the suv rammed into several cars and crashed into a fire hydrant on the avenue near kirk lane. water gushed into the air for hours and police say the driver is a 24-year-old man from oakland. san francisco police commission approved new guidelines for taser use within

the police department. the commission voted last night the tasers are weapons and officers only use if they are violently resisting arrest. they must approve before they're given tasers. new at 11:00, released surveillance video that broward county resource officer scott peterson outside of stoneman douglas. peterson arrived within minutes but never went into the building. the sheriff's department said the video shows peterson's actions were enough to warrant an internal affairs investigation. he was suspended without pay and chose to resign and retire after being fired, rather than being fired. aclu suing the trump administration with illegally detaining immigrants with a solid case for asylum. detaining many immigrants for months while they wait for hearings, even if they've

already passed a required screening to determine if they face persecution in their home countries. in the past, immigrants who passed that screening were usually given humanitarian parole but the aclu said under president trump, that's just not happening. two senators today filed a bill called the wolf act, short for welfare of furry friends to put them in overhead compartment bins after a french bulldog died on a united airlined flight from houston to new york this week. the owners say a flight attendant told them to put their dog co quito in the bin. and there were 24 animal deaths reported by airlines last year. 18 of those were on united. >> it's a disgrace. i can't imagine how your pet's owner feels but we need to get to the bottom of it. i know we have many important things to do but this is

important too. >> united is also under fire for wrongly shipping a dog to japan this week. the 10-year-old german shepherd was supposed to have been flown to kansas. new sanctions against russia over election meddling. target five entities and 18 russians including the 13 people who were indicted by special counsel robert mueller last month. the sanctions including barring travel to the u.s. and freezing assets within the u.s. happening today, regions expected to vote to increase tuition for thousands of out of state students. the 3.5% height would add $1,000 to the tuition they pay to bring out of state tuition and fees to more than $41,000 a year. the increase is expected to raise nearly $35 million. the regions may raise tuition for california residents. if state lawmakers don't give universities more

police say there could be more victims. matt keller is live with the hall of justice in san jose. matt? >> reporter: kristen, wrapped up here santa clara courthouse. denied a reduction in the $210,000 bail, so he's going to remain in the santa clara county jail for now. we just took video in the past hour here inside the courthouse. this is the suspect. he's 21-year-old louis. a fourth year student studying chemical engineering at san jose state. they were called to a disturbance at campus village a on march 3rd. officers say the alleged victim and other state student left the scene but eventually talked to him. since then, two more alleged victims, both male san jose state students have come forward. one claiming an incident happened in 2014. march 5th and all three crimes on campus and all three, alleged alcohol was involved in the cases. faces five charges related to sexual assault. university police are saying

accuweather forecast with mike nicco. >> 0.05 inches of rain. doesn't take much to make puddles. you can see some people not driving with the headlights on. wipers on, lights on. if thunder roars, head indoors. we have a chance of some thunderstorms today. here's a look at live doppler 7. you can see the concentration of rain around the bay bridge up through the richmond san rafael bridge and out into the san ramone valley. you can see the south bay waiting for rain in the santa cruz mountains. it will get to you eventually

and more rain in the bay. san jose, 87. pretty dry. nice time to get out but have the umbrella handy no matter where you are. we have periods of showers. some of those will contain thunderstorms and we have dry weather for sunday and monday and then a warmer storm next week where we won't have to worry about thunderstorms and hail. a bay bridge toll plaza. you can see what the rain has done there. never getting back aboard and a look at the 12 hours over noon all the way into midnight and you can see it's a chilly day. some areas in the 40s at noon and mid 50s to upper 50s at 4:00 and 8:00, back down to midnight. the showers will hang around unlike last night but that's also going to keep the temperatures up a little bit in the upper 30s to the north bay. mid to upper 40s for the rest of us. you see green out there and white north of lake port. clear lake, we'll have snow. maybe up to 4 to 5 inches above about 3,000 feet. so here we are from noon to 4:00 and you can see scattered

showers out there. possible downpours up in the north bay as we start the evening commute and those will slide south as we head towards 7:00. notice, it's never a solid line of rain. it's just waves of showers. 4:00 in the morning. wet commute tomorrow through 9:00. you can see it becomes very isolated but rotating ashore all day tomorrow and taper it during the evening hours but 8:00 to 10:00, we have a small chance of a window of showers there and by 8:00 saturday morning, fingers crossed, maybe there's an isolated shower saturday and that is all. a quick look at what's going on up in the sierra. gorgeous right now, doesn't it? look at what's going to happen at 5:00 this evening. another winter storm warning up to 3 feet down to 3500 feet. the pass revelevels snow packed. up to 5 feet possible. if you're traveling, it's going to be a chain and slow go for friday, saturday morning. saturday afternoon. it will still be slippery but sunday will be the clearest of
