a sharp twist in the road where the car appears to have lost control before smashing in a tree. chp officers looked for clues to what happened. the car does have a black box type computer. >> the vehicle would have had to rotate. usually that would be from a turning movement put in, that would cause a vehicle to skid around the other way. >> first responders spent 35 minutes pulling deputy zerkle from his car. this was the scene early this morning at the hospital. >> he was airlifted to petaluma county hospital. after we arrived we were told they were unable to save him. >> reporter: deputy zerkle had been with the department two and a half years. he would have been 25 years old in less than two weeks. he was based at the

oakland police are all trying to figure out exactly what happened. relatives of the 24 year old came to the banks of the lake to grieve. >> i need closure to what my daughter went through, and i just know she wouldn't give up her life like that. somebody killed her, and i want to know why. >> her daughters will never be able to see they mother again. someone robbed them young ladies. they were 4 and 2 years old. young ladies. they have re young. and they miss they mom. they're going to miss their mother. >> reporter: about 4:30 this morning, a witness called 911 to report strange activity in the water. >> he heard two people in the water. one of them being a woman, arguing and kind of thrash beint in t -- thrash being in the water. >> reporter: it was michael grace of oakland. >> officers pulled him from the

water and paramedics performed cpr, but he died at the hospital. however, they couldn't find tayana, that's when dive teams were called in. >> we knew the patient had been under the water for far too long. she did not make it. >> reporter: detectives say grace and johnson were romantically involved. they believe they were involved in a physical altercation and johnson had injuries pertinent to that. they aren't sure what happened because the water is so shallow. >> it's sad. >> we heard if any one was out this morning, if they saw anything, please contact our division. in just the last hour, abc 7 news has learned the city sf vallejo has released a tentative settlement in a case.

she was drugged, kidnapped and raped in 2015. her boyfriend was of bound. huskens sued the city for defamation. later there was a was a was a ww guilty. it's not clear what amount huskens will receive. today abc 7 news was in court as the officer known as the hot cop of the castro was convicted and taken into custody. melanie woodrow has followed this story since the beginning. >> reporter: a jury finding san francisco police officer christopher quartz guilty. known as the hot cop of the castro. >> this man was brought to justice. doesn't matter whether you're a police officer or every day person. everybody needs to be held accountable for their action. >> reporter: on november 29, 2015, he hit two piedestrians

just after 2:00 a.m. in san francisco then fled the scene. victor perez, one of the victims told abc 7 news by phone today, he felt pity and resentment for the officer. the other victim was left with permanent, serious injuries. the officer said he had run because he was in danger from someone recognizing him as the hot cop of the castro. >> i think the process is one that we have to respect. doesn't mean that i'm not disappointed. i'm extremely disappoint. >> reporter: the judge remanded him to custody saying he was a flight risk scheduling sentencing for april 4th. as you know, recreational cannabis became legal in california at the beginning of the year. >> why they want to bring prices down. and the final moments of the hostages killed in yountville last friday. two tragic incidents involving

more questions emerged today following the release of surveillance video about what a deputy sheriff did or didn't do in the minutes after a shooting started at marjorie douglas school in florida. deputy scot peterson appeared to pull out his gun but never entered the building. he was criticized for not trying to stop the suspect. he retired rather than accept a

suspension. he still faces an internal affairs investigation. new details tonight. we now now that the gunman who stormed the building in youptsville used two guns, one to kill social workers and the other to kill himself. the new information came from the napa county coroner's office late this afternoon, and laura anthony has the story. >> reporter: it's the first official word in six days about what happened inside the pathway home last friday, from the napa county coroner's office. the coroner confirms, jennifer gonzalez, jennifer golick kr christine were all shot in the head. as for the unborn child, the unborn baby died due to the lack of oxygenated blood caused by her mother's death.

tomorrow. and the snow level will be down below 3500 feet. so in the bay area's highest peaks we may see snow as the cold air comes in. taking you through the evening and the early morning hours, we'll continue to see scatters with the occasional brief downpour. there may be wetspots greet being commuters. and tomorrow we'll see showers break up into more widely-scattered pockets of rain into saturday. and finally we start to get partial clearing late saturday. rainfall estimates going into tomorrow afternoon or evening, generally about a quarter of an inch to just over half an inch across the bay area. overnight lows mainly in the mid to upper 40s. highs tomorrow in the mid-50s, maybe a few upper 50s in the south bay. and a winter storm warning will be in effect until 5:00 a.m. saturday. during that time, another one to four feet of snow. and travel will be difficult to almost impossible.
