recovery operation tonight after a pedestrian bridge suddenly collapsed this afternoon. good evening, i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm alma daetz. crews will stay at the scene of florida international university through the night. this after at least four people died and nine people were pulled from the rubble alive. >> abc news reporter maggie ruely is there. >> if anybody has done anything wrong we'll hold them accountable. >> reporter: florida's governor promising accountability after this newly construct the pedestrian bridge collapsed without warning thursday afternoon, killing unsuspecting motorist ands pedestrians underneath. >> oh, my god. there's two cars under there. >> reporter: first responders aided by rescue dogs desperately digging through the rubble for survivors. the injured carried away on stretchers. at least two had to be cut from the wreckage. >> someone has to be held accountable for this situation because this is completely and utterly unacceptable. >> reporter: that bridge erected just last saturday in a matter

of hours. it was still under contraction and had not opened to pedestrians. its purpose was to give students at florida international a safe route to their homes in nearby sweetwater. >> bridge was about strength and unity, about being good neighbors with the city of sweetwater. this bridge was about goodness, not sadness. now we are feeling immense sadness. >> reporter: in a tweet to the victims, president trump offers his thoughts and prayers. both the architect and the miami construction firm say they are stunned and will fully cooperate with the investigation. this bridge was built using accelerated bridge construction or a.b.c. sometimes it's referred to, as an instant bridge because it can be put up in a matter of hours. since 2010, more than 800 have been built this way. now investigators are going to work to find out if what happened here was a design flaw or a construction issue. in miami florida, maggie ruly, abc7 news. >> it could be months before investigators can officially determine what caused the bridge

collapse. tonight a south bay civil engineering professor is weighing in. >> abc7 news reporter katie marzullo has that story. >> i don't think anyone designs or constructs for things to fail. >> reporter: the chair of santa clara university civil university project doesn't think design was the cause of the collapse. > fast tracking was not the problem. arnold schwarzenegger did it when he was governor. he said i will give you money for each day you save in construction. people got it done and we had no failures. >> reporter: the bridge was built on the side of the road then placed into place in a matter of hours. >> it usually is safer because they're doing construction away from the traveling public. >> reporter: the president of mcm the company that built and installed the bridge was interviewed last saturday. the day of span was put into place above the street. >> i'm exhaling now because it has been set. >> reporter: professor noted that was days before the collapse. >> it had to be something that

was happening over time, and so it suggests -- i'm not saying it is -- it suggests he had some sort of a straining effect. >> reporter: he said the problem could be related to materials, design, construction or placement. in santa clara, katie marzullo, abc7 news. >> all right. we have breaking news in san leandro tonight. that's where police exchanged gunfire with a suspect. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard is live with more. cornell. >> reporter: dan, i just spoke with san leandro police officers who do confirm one suspect was wounded in that exchange of gunfire. another suspect still outstanding tonight in this neighborhood. now, we do want to show you a video of a suspect being placed into an ambulance just a short time ago. following an exchange of gunfire with officers where he was wounded. police say they were initially investigating auto burglary suspects in the parking lot of the bay fair mall in san leandro when they say the suspects'

vehicle rammed a police car. that's when gunfire was exchanged between officers and the suspects. police say a second suspect got away. that person still outstanding in this neighborhood, and a shelter in place warning now in effect for the neighborhood of hispe rio n boulevard, washington. police are part of the investigation. it is unclear which agency fired on the suspects. what we can tell you that no officers were injured tonight. we are live in san leandro, cornell bernard, abc7 news. >> cornell, thanks very much. >> all right. turning now to our weather, snow is dumping down in the sierra tonight and here in the bay area. you may have encountered some rain this evening. >> on the right of your screen is what it looked like in emeryville tonight. let's give you the latest now from meteorologist sandhya patel. sandy? >> take a look at live doppler

7. what we've been waiting for most of the winter is here. a soggy pattern, i'm going into street level radar, moderate pockets of rain in the north bay around sears point. also heading out towards vallejo, precipitation a third of an inch an hour in spots where the downpours are coming in. we do have some mixed precipitation over cobb mountain, the radar site and in the south bay from santa clara sunnyvale street level radar, light rain with daly city. as we look at the east bay we are seeing around pleasant hill, light rain. gusting at 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 scattered rain, snow over our highest peaks. i'll be back with the hour by hour time line coming up. dan andal ma? >> sandhya, thanks very much. a procession of police officers followed the death of a police officer. we are learning more about the 24-year-old sheriff's deputy

died after a traffic accident this morning as he was responding to a 911 call. abc7 news reporter jeannine de la vega spoke with people who knew him and admired him. >> reporter: a solemn moment thursday afternoon on highway 101 as firefighters from petaluma paid their respects to a man who dedicated his life to serving others. marin county sheriff's deputy ryan zirkle, he died overnight in a car crash. his body was escorted by his fellow deputies to a funeral home in san ans elmo. >> the nicest, kindest person you could imagine around here. >> reporter: he had been with the department 2 1/2 years. he graduated from san marin high school in novato. >> i would ask him how he was doing in his pursuit of law enforcement. i thought that was perfect for him. he was just so happy with what he was doing. >> reporter: he was the quarterback on the football team and played point guard on the basketball team. here he is, number 2, calm under pressure. his assistant coach described

him as tremendous, a young man who was always smiling and always willing to help others. >> he's so young, so full of energy, you know, just full of life. the student he was, the leader, this whole community, the school meant so much to him and he had so much ahead of him. >> reporter: he leaves behind his parents, two brothers and a fiance. it's a somber mood here at the marin county sheriff's department where the flags are at half staff. now the department is meeting with the family to help make funeral arrangements. reporting from san rafael, jeannine de la vega, abc7 news. >> two bay area schools will close campus tomorrow due to shooting threats found on their bathroom walls. martinez junior high school and burlingame intermediate school sent notification to parents that classes will be canceled out of an abundance of caution. >> sheriff's investigators released some of the first o cfo details today about the killings of three women taken hostage at the california veterans home in yountville. jennifer gonzalez, jennifer

goleg the other died instantly after being shot in the head by their client albert wong last friday. all three worked at the pathway home serving veterans scarred by war. wong killed himself with the shotgun. >> a public memorial for the three victims will take place monday. it begins at 6:00 p.m. at the napa valley performing arts center at lincoln theater. >> a man pleaded guilty today to murder and drunk driving charges in the death of a pedestrian in san jose. ricardo gomez now faces a minimum sentence of 15 years to life in prison. gomez told abc7 news that he had six to eight beers before the crash which claimed the life of a city hall employee named doug andrene who just left work. it happened in november 2016. two members of the abc7 news team were injured in the crash. >> abc7 news learned the city of vallejo reached a settlement in the case of the kidnapping case.

new at 11:00, dozens of young women are feeling empowered after spending the day at the warriors practice facility shooting hoops and thinking about their future. it's part of an annual dubs event inspiring girls to

consider a career in sports. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard was there. >> reporter: dozens of middle school girls showed they have the skills when it comes to shooting hoops. on the same court where the warriors practice their moves. dubs forward jordan bell was the coach for this workout. >> just having fun with the girls, going through drills, things like that, trying to get them to bring energy. >> reporter: the workshop called beyond the baseline was sponsored by the warriors and nike. teaching young women from alameda county some basketball skills and a lot more. 13-year-old somara scott is feeling inspired. >> it makes me feel a lot more confident because i see other females, especially minorities, doing what they love. >> reporter: girls in alameda county partnered with this event for three reasons. sports, teamwork and leadership. >> 80% of fortunate 500 female executives played competitive sports. so, there is a real benefit to

ocean avenue, i do want to track one of these cells here that is headed this way. so, it will head into daly city 11:41, san francisco 11:47 p.m., right around the north bay novato, bell marine keys. 101. it's wet. we're seeing pockets of moderate to heavier showers between alhambra valley road, bay point, pittsburgh area. going into the south bay it's lighter rain from santa clara to san jose into los gatos, morgan hill, you're getting wet roadways. this is a level 1 system. a light system. through tomorrow scattered showers, it will be gusty at times. thunder and hail chance certainly a possibility. and snow expected over the highest peaks. it will accumulate in a few areas, 2,500 to 3,000 feet is where we're looking at the snow level tomorrow. rainfall totals i just updated these 24 hours the last 24 hours.
