another morning, another wet commute. you're looking live at the bay bridge toll plaza. expect rain and wet roads once again as we top off the week with wet weather. >> it's 6:00 a.m. on a friday. you're almost done. natasha has the day off today. you are never more than seven minutes away from your accuweather forecast. here's meteorologist mike nicco. >> let's talk about the rain. we'll give you an idea of what to expect today and tomorrow. a ranking of the storms. this one is light for the thunderstorms today. fewer showers and not really a chance of thunder tomorrow. but look at the snow levels. 2500 to 3,000 feet. right now, we've got moderate rain through the sunol grade and from milpitas to sunnyvale. this is the way it looks no matter where you drive this morning. my accuweather 12-hour planner,

milder, 40s. it's going to be cool again this afternoon. low to mid-50s. fewer showers during the evening commute. alexis? >> still have the commuter alert. no change with b.a.r.t. 16th street station. closed if you're trying to get out of mission district. you can use 24th instead. this is a power issue on pg&e's end. i want to show you a new crash. westbound 80 past powell. looks like everything is blocked right now for all these folks heading toward the maze. we did just have two lanes reported closed. perhaps they're getting close to clearing us. obviously, we'll keep a close eye on the situation. i'll have an update in a few minutes. thank you, alexis. we have updates to what's been breaking news out of san jose this morning. >> yeah. we want to go back it matt keller for the latest on the crash in communications hill. matt? >> reporter: good morning, jessica and reggie. we got an update from the san jose police department and they confirmed that two people did die in this crash here on

casselin o drive in san jose. you can see that tow truck drivers are on the scene. they pulled the car up from the hillside and are now sweeping off the debris. we also heard from san jose police that alcohol and marijuana are suspected to be a factor in this crash. here's video from earlier this morning. san jose police say a honda accord was headed eastbound on casselino drive. it was a violent crash that the en jing separated from the car. the adult male driver and female passenger died at the scene. another female passenger was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. another man was taken to the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. their identities are not being released at the time. two dogs were inside the car at the time of the crash. one dog did die at the scene and we assume as soon as the tow truck drivers get all the debris up from the road and the engine up on to one of their trucks that they will be reopening casselino drive in san jose. reporting live in san jose, matt

keller, abc 7 news. >> thank you, matt. new developments in an overnight search for a burglary search. >> amy hollyfield is live with updates. >> reporter: good morning. they made a second arrest overnight. they've lifted the shelter in place order here in san leandro. this isn't over. you can see there's still crime tape at the arco gas station on hesperian boulevard. evidence still here, evidence markers out. they're still doing their work and ruth court is still closed. police still out here. they made the second arrest at 1:45 this morning. police dogs picked up the scent and found the man hiding in the bushes near the railroad tracks. they discovered he, too, had a gunshot wound. both suspect were hit by police gunfire. they were wanted for auto burglary around the east bay and police think they were about to strike here in san leandro when they caught up with them. >> they were doing an auto burglary investigation. they had tied them to auto burglaries in the city of

fremont as well as other east bay cities. they knew that these were the guys that they had wanted. they believed that when they found them in san leandro this evening that they were in the process of casing the parking lot to commit additional auto burglaries. >> reporter: the parking lot here at the bay fair mall in san leandro. the suspects first rammed their car into police cars. then they pulled a gun and that's when police shot them. they haven't released their names or ages. they say they're both in the hospital now and expected to survive. no police officers were hurt. reporting live in san leandro, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. amy, thank you. new details this morning out of miami, florida, authorities now say at least six people after a pedestrian bridge crumbled on to a highway. this is a live look at the bridge at florida international university this morning. you can still see a mess there. crews were conducting a stress test on the bridge yesterday morning when it fell smashing eight cars.

it could be months before investigators officially determine why the bridge collapsed. this morning a civil engineering professor at santa clara university is weighing in. he does not think accelerated construction was the issue. >> arnold schwarzenegger did this as governor e he said i will give you money for each day you save in construction. people got it done and we had no failures. >> he says and he's speculating, the problem could be related to materials, design, construction or placement. happening today, the two suspects accused of murdering a 19-year-old woman are due back in court. 19-year-old daniel gross and 25-year-old melissa leonardo are scheduled to enter pleas this morning. they're charged with stabbing lizette cuesta in livermore last month. authorities say she named her killers as she was dying. last month the two suspects appeared in court for a hearing but did not enter pleas. a san francisco police officer convicted in a hit and run ln sentenced next month.

the officer was found guilty yesterday. he was involved in an off-duty crash that seriously hurt two pedestrians in 2015. now, his attorney claimed that he ran because he was in danger from a mob that had gathered and recognized him. he was known as the hot castro cop. this morning, he remains in jail after a judge said he was a flight risk. sheriff's investigators released new details about the deaths of three women taken hostage at the california veterans home in yountville. jennifer goz goz, jennifer golick and christine loeber all died instantly after being shot in the head with a rifle. gunman albert wong then shot and killed hill self-. the three victims worked at the pathway home which served veterans. wong was asked to leave the program a a memorial will be held on monday. a boulder crashes through a

it's 6:15. san jose police looking for a driver who ran into a school bus and took off. a student used a cell phone to take a photo of the suspect's car. police say it was a 2004 ford taurus. with a california license plate 8bej 916. the driver described as an elderly woman. four of the students on the bus reported minor injuries. two transported to a local hospital to get. anti-monopoly watchdogs investigate in tokyo. amazon is accused of forcing them to take a loss when they offer discounts. this is japan's second time investigating amazon in recent

years. it closed a case last year after amazon amended sellers' contracts. they dropped a clause that required retailers to set prices equal to or lower than those on rival websites. amazon is cooperating with authorities. a family of skunks reunited thanks to a staff at the wildlife center of silicon valley. a surrogate mom. found with the mother and found in a trap in san jose. the good news is the mama skunk accepted her babies and the family is safely together again. from real animals to tech animals. there may be soon a new use of drones and it could be as a robot bee. >> usa today reporting walmart has applied for a patent for drone pollinators to make up for the decline in the bee population. the patent describes drones being programmed to collect and deposit pollen from plant to plant.

32 minute. you look great in the green at ten minutes. a lot of the roadways this morning. mike nicco is going to tell us how long the rain will last. >> all through the morning commute. we have moderate downpours now from about milpitas, santa clara, san jose towards campbell and cambrian park. watch out for that also. look at the sunol grade, dublin grade. all getting wet once again. big picture shows the low up to the north. that's going to slide down the coast today and tomorrow. that's why we'll have more rounds of showers the next 36 hours. here's a look at the with wet weather falling on 101 and 880 on san jose. showers and thunderstorms, my first accuweather highlight. showers more scattered tonight. a stronger storm for tuesday, wednesday, thursday and friday next week. we still have downpours at 7:00, especially in the east bay and south bay. more developing in the north bay. you can see they taper down to lighter showers as we head towards lunch. we'll have a chance of a scattered shower, thunderstorm

from 4:00 to 7:00. notice the coverage is a little less than what we're dealing with this morning. then a chunk of energy will roll through tonight. hopefully it doesn't wake you up like it did me five minutes before my alarm was supposed to go off this morning. tomorrow, you can see how widely isolated the showers are. it will not be a washout. just know if a dark cloud comes your way, a brief downpour may be in store for 15 minutes. then it will move on. my seven-day forecast, drying out sunday after a frosty start in our inland valleys. we'll warm up a little bit. we'll get back to average monday into tuesday. but tuesday wednesday, it goes from 1 light to 2 moderate and hangs around for thursday. alexis, tell us about the toyota tahoe report. >> we've got a lot of snow in the sierra. unfortunately, not easy to get there. we're under a winter storm warning until early tomorrow morning. chains required for 89, 88, 80 and 50. basically all routes to get to the sierra. between 4 1/2 to five hours

squaw alpine -- north star 23 to 88. heavenly, 22 -- same thing goes for sugar bowl 46. 44 to 122 1 at sierra tahoe. kirkwood, 60 to 89. you're encouraged to use extreme caution. definitely allow plenty of time to get there. we love to complain about the cost of living in the bay area. it turns out others have it worse than us. the economist ranked the cost of living in cities around the world, singapore keeps its title as the most expensive city in the world. paris jumped up to the number 2 spot. zurich, hong kong and oslo round out the top five. new york at number 13 worldwide. but it's first in the u.s. really. lang laes is the second most expensive american city. followed by minneapolis. san francisco ties with

trying to get out of the mission via b.a.r.t. you can head to the 24th street station station. here's a look outside the bay bridge toll plaza. one of the only slow spots. the metering lights on for a little bit over an hour. we have decent times even with the rain. i'll show you that next. alexis, thank you. back to the breaking news in san jose. a deadly crash in communications hill. >> abc 7 news reporter matt keller received some new information from police in the last hour. he's live with the updates. matt. >> reporter: good morning, reggie and jessica. the tow trucks left the scene and the street has been opened. you can see that tree there with all the markings there, that's the tree that this vehicle hit this morning. two people were killed. two others injured. here's video from earlier this morning. just devastating. san jose police say a honda accord was headed eastbound on casselino drive when the driver lost control and hit that tree. it was such a violent crash, the

engine ended up separated from the car. the adult male driver died and another female passenger taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. another man taken to the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. their identities are not released at the time. alcohol and marijuana are suspected to be factors in the crash. two dogs were also in the car. one dog died and the other dog appeared okay. this is the 13th fatal collision of 2018 and the 13th and 14th victims. matt keller, abc 7 news. matt, thank you. more breaking news we're tracking. seven u.s. service members have been killed in a helicopter crash in iraq. crash happened yesterday in western iraq near the border with syria. the pentagon said in a statement minutes ago, the crash does not appear to be an attack. the cause is still under investigation. the helicopter is used for search and rescue. the pentagon said an

accompanying u.s. helicopter immediately reported the crash and secured the scene. officials have not identified the victims. the marin county sheriff' office is mourning the loss of a fallen deputy. yesterday this procession of police vehicles escorted deputy ryan zirkle's body to a funeral home in san anselmo. he died yesterday morning after crashing near point reyes station while responding to a 9 11 call. he had been with the department for two and a half years. he graduated from 2011 from novato. he was the quarterback on the football team and played point guard on the basketball team. his assistant coach describes him as a tremendous young man who was always smiling and willing to help others. >> i would see him and talk to him and ask him how he was doing in his pursuit of law enforcement. i just thought that that was perfect for him. he was just so happy with what he was doing. >> zirkle leaves behind his parents, two brothers and a fiance. the sheriff's office is meeting with zirkle's family to help make funeral arrangements.

two bay area schools will be closed today because of shooting threats that were found on the bathroom walls. martinez junior high and burlingame intermediate school sent notifications that the closures are out of caution. they do not believe the threats are real but aren't taking any chances. new details this morning on a story we brought you as breaking news yesterday on abc 7 mornings. oakland police still trying to figure out exactly what happened after two bodies were pulled from lake merritt. the victims have been identified. said to be 39-year-old michael grace and 24-year-old tayana johnson. their families say the two were dating. someone called 9-1-1 around 4:15 yesterday morning reporting two people appeared to be drowning after an argument. grace was pulled out of the water by officers and later died at the hospital. dive teams found johnson's body a few hours later. >> i need closure to what my daughter went through and i just know she wasn't going to give up her lifelike that.

somebody killed her and i want to know why. >> investigators say johnson had signs of physical injuries and they are treating her death as a homicide. grace's death is considered accidental. now developments in the pedestrian bridge disaster in miami, florida. authorities confirmed overnight that at least six people have been killed. the bridge was undergoing stress tests when it came down on a busy highway yesterday. the bridge was heralded as a feat of engineering. the school even posted video of the bridge going up in just hours over the weekend. they used accelerated bridge construction. the entire 174-foot long piece of bridge was rotated over the 8-lane highway. the ntsb is going to try to determine if the tragedy was caused by a design flaw or a construction issue. president trump could be planning to get rid of national security adviser h.r. mcmaster. >> that's according to the "washington post." the president is working to find a replacement before making the announcement. the post confirmed the president's decision with at

least five people close to the administration. the white house press secretary sara sanders huckabee responded to the report on twitter saying, quote, just spoke to the president and general h.r. mcmaster. contrary to reports, they have a good working relationship and there are no changes at the nsc. the investigation into russia's meddling in the presidential election is now expanding. yesterday abc news confirmed that special counsel has issued subpoenas demanding president trump's family business hand over all documents related to russia. analysts say it's a sign robert mueller's investigation will continue for several more months. a source tells abc news mueller has information that raises more questions about the financial dealings of the trump organization. a florida debris removal company is stepping in to help with wildlife cleanup in the coffey park neighborhood. a company will help tear down and rebuild the walls that line hopper avenue west of coffey lane.

the company also promised to make a significant financial contribution to the project. the walls made of concrete and wood were damaged during the october wildfires. let's take a look at live doppler 7. it is wet once again. we'll start up in the north bay where we got a light shower in petaluma towards sonoma. eventually, that will make it towards napa and yountville. you can see st. helena, where it sits and spins and warns us of this rain. a little bit of snow at 3800 feet. broaden the picture. you can see the heaviest of the rain from the san mateo bridge southward and eastward. that's where it's going to continue to stay for the next hour to hour and a half while the showers become a little more scattered across the north bay. now, what to dress, how to dress. temperaturewise, low to mid-40s through most of our san ramon valley. then we've got upper 40s in pleasanton concord and antioch and brentwood. not as chilly as yesterday. even 50s in hayward and san

jose. 41 in santa rosa. 45 in pa sichka. oakland and san francisco -- here's the rainy talked about on the san mateo bridge. caution there's going to be wet weather throughout the morning, hopefully, fingers crossed. a little fewer in the evening hours. mass transit will be wet and cool and stay inside on the ferry unless you want to get wet. for the kid, mid to upper 40s at 7:00. a milder morning. showers, yeah, at 11:00 and at 3:00, you can be watching for rainbows. highs today, i'd say low 50s along the coast. we'll have mid to upper 50s elsewhere. that should be no surprise. that's what we've had most of the week. colder tonight. especially in the north bay. mid to upper 30s. livermore, 39. the rest of us in the low to mid-40s. it's going to be colder sunday morning with frost possible. but i promise you by the time we get to sunday afternoon, we're going to have some sunshine, some drier weather and looking at next week, hopefully monday, i know you don't want to think about it yet.

the commute will be dry, unlike this morning's. >> a lot of spinout crashes this morning and major commuter issue with b.a.r.t. still no resolution but a few more details to the 16th mission station and closure. they found a broken power pole. that's affecting not too many folks. about 130 i believe. crews are working to repair that. the estimated time of restoring power is 10:00 a.m. however, we could get the 16th street b.a.r.t. station up and running before that. it depends if they can use a generator. they've been working on that for two hours. no delays across golden gate. ten minutes across the bay bridge. san mateo bridge in the yellow at 21 minutes. thanks, alexis. more bike lane barriers are being installed to protect cyclist frs cars. they put up safety posts yesterday along the valencia street bike lanes. cyclists have long complained that you been ear and lyft

gunshot wound. both suspects were hit by police gunfi gunfire. they were wanted for auto burglaries that they committed in other east bay cities of the police think they were about to strike here in san leandro when they caught up with them. they think they were casing the parking lot here at the bay fair mall in san leandro. at first, the suspects rammed their car into police cars. then they pulled a gun. that's when police shot them. they have not released their names or ages. they are expected to survive. they're in the hospital now. no police officers were hurt during this. reporting live in san leandro. amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. amy, thank you. the state is ramping up a crackdown on people who illegally use parking placards intended for the disabled. abc 7 news was at costco on the expressway in san jose as dmv investigators question people who were using disabled placards to park in handicapped spaces. they checked to see if those

placards were valid and being used by the right people. the dmv is now doing 24 inspections like this every month across the state. in the east bay, lawmaker wants to lower the taxes on cannabis. assembly democrat rob vonda thinks reducing the taxes for three years will eliminate the big difference between that sold illegally and on the -- the added cost is one reason users are still buying pot on the streets. one of the bills co-au the state will bring in more tax ref knew when it cut the tax rate. a new study finds u.s. adult are consuming 17 billion drinks a year. cdc researchers found one in six or 37 million adults binge drink about once april week consuming an average of seven drinks per binge. binge drinking is consuming five or more drinks for men or four or more drinks for women in two hours.
