the u.s. began fighting isis there in 2014. >> kristen, thank you. san jose, two people are dead after a crash on communications hill. >> it happened after 1:30 this morning near highway 87 and hillsdale avenue. we explain what may have contributed to that crash. >> on top of communications hill, these marks are a fresh reminder of a tragic crash. >> pretty curvy. tough be careful coming down these streets. >> reporter: overnight, san jose police say a honda accord lost crashed into a tree before coming to a stop. the impact so forceful with the engine separated from the vehicle. two people died at the scene. two others were taken to the hospital. their conditions have not been released. >> they are in the preliminary stages of the investigation. there were some indication that alcohol and marijuana may have contributed to that accidet as well. >> reporter: speed hasn't been ruled out as a factor in the

crash. residents nearby say this stretch of road has been a problem spot for years. >> if you drink or smoke, it's best to stay where you are at or call for a friend or cab to pick you up. definitely, do not drive while high. >> reporter: it is back open to traffic, but neighbors hope this serves as a wake-up call. >> you are hearing tires screeching at all times of the night. no surprise that something like this would happen. it's not a shock. >> reporter: this is the city's 13th fatal traffic collision of the year in san jose, chris wen, abc 7 news. the coroner's office is working to notify the families of the two killed in the crash. their identities have not been released. a deadly hit and run in chinatown. a 64-year-old woman was hit at broadway around 5:00 a.m. she later died at the hospital. both drivers and pedestrians should be careful in the area. >> maybe they didn't see the

car, that's to be determined. maybe the driver didn't see the person. both pedestrians and drivers really need to make a conscious effort of the surroundings and the weather. >> police say a 35-year-old man is in custody, charges are pending. there is an active search for a richmond man missing south of lake tahoe. authorities say the search efforts have been hampered by hazardous weather conditions and extreme avalanche danger. here is a picture of the 65-year-old. he was reported missing wednesday night after a day of skiing at bear valley resort in alpine county. his wife called authorities after he did not return to their cabin in arnold. he's an advanced skier and in good health. >> let's check on the weather. a bit of a clearing. >> it was nice to see the clouds break up. we have the forecast. more scattered showers are coming. it's still snowing in alpine

county. they have had 52 inches of snow in the last three days. here is a look at live doppler 7. we have scattered, cold showers moving through the bay area now. you can see snow in cloverdale and eukiah. most of the central part of the bay area is in a calm break. earlier, as we animate the loop, the radar, you can see we have lightning strikes. i'm going to go to the current storm, which goes through tomorrow, scattered showers and possibly thunderstorms. there's a possibility of hail as well and snow over the higher peaks. starting at 5:00, continuation of the same pattern, lots of breaks and no precipitation at all. showers are poszsible through te evening hours. we will see a little bit of clearing late tomorrow into tomorrow night. i'll show you what is going to follow that later.

the kidnapping case is speaking publicly since agreeing to a settlement. >> they will be on "good morning america" on monday. melanie has covered their story for three years and has a preview of the story only on abc 7. >> the settlement hopefully means erin quinn and denise can focus on the rest of their lives. it means after three years of standing by as they were attacked and called liars, they can publicly share their truth. for the first time, they are breaking their silence about the kidnapping vallejo police called a hoax. >> i was walking to my desk -- >> reporter: the couple speaking exclusively to abc news about their wild story, all too real. >> it is only strange because law enforcement made it strange. >> he broke into quinn's home, bound them before kidnapping.

>> when he opened the car door, i thought this is it. >> reporter: muller sexually assaulted her twice before releasing her in her hometown. police interrogated quinn, believing he murdered her. when she reappeared, they called it a hoax. >> the fact we essentially wasted resources for really nothing is upsetting. >> they came out and said this is a kidnapping, all the evidence, got denise back. >> reporter: it was after muller left his cell phone behind after a home invasion that investigators arrested him in south lake tahoe where they found evidence linking him to the kidnapping. he pleaded guilty to federal charges. a judge sentenced him to 40 years. now the couple settled their civil lawsuit against the city of vallejo for $2.5 million.

>> it's about reaching a number that compensates them, allows them to restart their lives. >> a spokesperson tells abc 7 news, the city is not in possession of an assigned agreement and has no further comment. they expect the agreement to be signed soon. as for quinn and huskins, they plan to get married in the fall. you may recall, muller was not originally charged for sexually assaults huskins. that is changing. on monday, a superior court judge signed a warrant that will be processed by the salano sheriff department to bring him to the county to face new charges, including kidnapping for ransom, two counts of rape, robbery, burglary and false imprisonment. >> thank you. now on monday, you can see the interview with denise and aaron on "good morning america." you can watch from 7:00 to 9:00

a.m. here on abc 7. lawyers for jose ga see ya zarate said gun charges are vindictive. november 30, they acquitted him for murder and manslaughter on july 5, 2015. he was found guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm. his lawyers argued the federal prosecution is an attempt to punish him for being acquitted in state court. the dmv's water damaged office in oakland is finally set to reopen. the coliseum office on 85th avenue will reopen monday morning at 8:00. it's been closed more than a month after someone stole $50 worth of copper pipe from the roof. that little money, all that damage. that caused water damage worth tens of thousands of dollars. it's official, san francisco is getting a brand-new park. this is what the $25 million project is expected to look like. it will be built in the old

>> chaotic. do you think he believes it is somehow productive? >> i think what happened is the first year he sort of played by the rules. now that he's been there a year, he's in control. so, i mean, hiring talking heads on fox is not bringing us the level of expertise we need to make, really, dramatic decisions about our economy, about our national security and yet he seems to be just atratracted to people who talk well and may not know anything about the actual department they will be working for. >> yesterday, i know nancy pelosi talked about how to land victory in pennsylvania. a lot of people think of this as a bellwether for the midterm election, democrats winning a house seat in a state that donald trump carried by a significant margin. >> 21 points. >> does this really say anything or is it a function of

republicans controlling both the white house and both houses of congress? >> if you remember when president obama was first elected, we controlled, the democrats controlled the house and the senate. the following midterms, we lost 60 seats. so, the american public does n like to have all the power in just one party, so, it's likely that they are going to lose. we are not talking a blue wave. we need 24 to retake the house again. we'll see if we are successful in doing that. >> he would not campaign or support congresswoman pelosi. do you think others will do the same thing? is she in trouble? >> i don't believe she is in trouble. there were members who didn't support her in previous races for the leadership. i think she knows how to count. she also is very savvy and going to do what's best for the american people and what's best for the democratic party. >> i know you could run down a

long list of things you believe president trump has done poorly. has he done anything well? >> he raised important issues on trade. when two-thirds of the jobs lost from 2000-2007 came as a result of china being admitted into the wto, the world trade organization, we have seen a million jobs lost, we do need to hold them accountable more. we have like a 2.5% tariff for automobiles coming from china. they have a 25% tariff for automobiles going from the united states. so, there needs to be greater fairness there. >> you think he is on track there? >> if he does it right. >> let's switch gears and talk about something near and dear to your heart. something you started, the women's conference coming april 24th. we are a proud sponsor for that event. >> you are and have been for a long time. >> did you invision this

this is west from the east bay hills camera. you can see partial clearing there. temperatures from santa rosa 52, napa, 53. fairfield 56, concord 56. here is the view at mt. tam. lots of blue skies. more showers could fall this afternoon and evening. the forecast shows occasional showers through tomorrow afternoon and into the evening. dryer and milder weather. a wet pattern will return middle of next week. a current storm, which will continue to produce showers through tomorrow one on the storm impact. once again, we are talking scattered showers, light for the most part with the possibility of hail and isolated thunderstorms. we'll see pockets of showers sweeping through with rather extended areas of no precipitation at all into the overnight hours. early morning to mid-morning, a

we all know it is expensive to live in the bay area. >> it's especially true for people with low wage jobs. staffing agencies say businesses may be shutting down because they can't attract enough workers. >> we look at the situation in silicon valley. >> piology closed. but the corporate office reports it was due to a staffing shortage. that is a trend in the red hot job market filling jobs especially at lower wages can be challenging. >> it can take two to three weeks to fill somebody with a qualified employee. >> what did it used to be? >> 24 hours. >> linda is ceo of express employment, a san jose staffing

news. >> san jose's minimum wage is raised to $15 next year. staffing services recruit and workers are already having to pay more than that. san francisco is working to keep a healthy distance between cyclers and cars. they have installed white picket-style barriers along the bike lane on valencia street. they are designed to discourage cars to load and unload passengers. they say it's part of a long-term plan to make the lanes safer. >> eliminating conflicts for those who are blocking the bike lane, double parking and people who are unloading so people who are biking or driving have their own separate lane and get along the roadway. cyclists say the double parking problem has grown in recent years with the popularity of ride sharing services like lyft and uber. from heart break to heart warming. >> i dreamed we would have --

announcer: live, where you live, this is abc 7 news. here are the stories making headlines at 4:30. right now, search and rescue crews are looking for a missing richmond man last seen in alpine county. the 65-year-old didn't return to his family cabin after skiing wednesday. the search is slow because of an extreme avalanche hazard. matt keller tweeted alcohol and drugs could be connected to a deadly crash in san jose. two people and a dog were killed when their car hit a tree. another person has life-threatening injuries. mark cota from our sister station reported from orange county. police rescued a man from a burning mobile home when it exploded. oxygen tanks burst in the fire. florida's governor is going to hold someone accountable for the collapsed bridge. the university may have taken a

shortcut when inspecting the design of the bridge.bridge.bri. they didn't hire a second preapproved firm to go over the work. maggie has the latest. >> reporter: you can see that destruction behind me right now. the crews have been working throughout the day. this is now a recovery mission. they expect to find more victims beneath that rubble. we talk to people here at the scene when the bridge collapsed. they told us it felt like an earthquake. they ran outside to see if they could help. they were shocked with what they saw. >> unbelievable. >> reporter: a community still in shock after a bridge meant to keep students safe comes crashing down. at least one student among the dead. >> someone has to be held accountable for this situation because this is completely and utterly unacceptable. >> reporter: crews are working on the mission of recovery. >> we determined there's no longer survivors. that's why we transitioned into

recovery mode. >> our entire purpose of being here is to find out what happened. >> reporter: the bridge went up a few days ago and was built in a matter of hours, using accelerated bridge construction, meaning it is built ahead of time, like this one on the side of the road, then moved into place, all in a few hours. >> it could be a design flaw. it could be a flaw in the construction staging. it could be the actual construction materials or the equipment itself. there's so many things tough look at to come up with the final reason why. >> reporter: last night, the city of sweetwater confirmed they did a stress test. marco rubio tweeted the bridge collapsed after they ordered to have the cables tightened. >> with we have not confirmed there was a stress test. >> reporter: they are going to fully cooperate with the investigation. in addition to the student who was killed, we know an employee for the construction company

working on the bridge was killed when it collapsed. the company is saying two other employees are in the hospital. maggie rulii, abc news. >> could this become a criminal investigation? >> reporter: it already has become a criminal investigation. the police chief here saying this is a homicide investigation, something that he said multiple times. the state senator and the governor said we are going to find out what happened and find out who is responsible and, also, we are going to hold them accountable. we cannot let them get away with this. we should note the police chief said one was a homicide investigation and not blaming anyone, yet. there are no suspects. the investigation is ongoing and probably ongoing for weeks. because at least six people have lost their lives, this is officially a homicide investigation. >> thank you so much, reporting live from miami. >> let's move to the investigation, special counsel

robert mueller is targeting president trump's family business with a new subpoena. meanwhile, the adult film star who claims she had an affair with the president claims she was threatened to remain silent. >> we have the details. >> reporter: the attorney for stormy daniels claims she was physically threatened to keep her and president trump's affair quiet. speaking on "morning joe" -- >> was she threatened in any way? >> yes. >> was she threatened physical harm? >> yes. >> reporter: the white house said -- >> obviously, we take the safety and security of any person seriously. anyone threatening any individuals. >> reporter: daniels whose name is stephanie clifford is suing the president claiming a nondisclosure is invalid because mr. trump never signed the document. >> we are not trying to silence anyone. >> reporter: the latest is after

trump corporate attorney signed documents. martin claims she filed them in her individual capacity, similar to the president's personal attorney, michael cohen claimed he acted in capacity when he used his home equity line of credit to pay daniels $130,000 days before the election as part of the agreement. while the president takes a personal hit, business ties under scrutiny from special counsel, robert mueller who subpoenaed the business for documents including some related to russia, possibly plans for a deal to build a trump tower in moscow. one of the people involved, shared their plans in an interview with abc. >> i was trying to do a real estate transaction. i clearly was not involved in the campaign. >> reporter: the deal never progressed. he said it was playful banter with a childhood friend.

mr. trump signed a letter of intent for the building in moscow. abc news, washington. outgoing secretary of state, rex tillerson says he is praying for america in a message. he wrote he's praying, quote, for our country, our leaders and your efforts to make this world a better place than we found it. tillerson will cheer for their success and urge staff to ensure a smooth transition to his successor, cia director, mike pompeo. he learned of his firing on tuesday in a tweet by president trump. today, for the first time, we are hearing from the riverside parents whose children slept in a plywood box. they insist they are not abusive, just poor. they were arrested and charged with three counts child endangerment because of the conditions their family lived in. they have moved into a new home, paid for by a gofundme campaign started by a friend. they are thankful for the

are up in the higher elevations with snow and freezing rain mixed in with regular rain. in the south bay, scattered precipitation. generally, we have sunny skies across the bay area at the moment. it may not remain that way overnight and tomorrow. the storm indicates the current storm still ranks one. through tomorrow, we could see scattered showers, isolated thunderstorm, possibly small hail. snow levels to 3,000 feet because of the cold air. tomorrow, st. patrick's day, weather much like today, flashes of sunshine here and there. a few passing clouds and maybe a few passing showers. let's hope the showers hold off during the parade. the climate prediction center indicating the spring outlook and calls for drier than average conditions. wetter than average in the northeastern quadrant. warmer than average in the bay area and virtually all the 48

>> that's where abc 7 news reporter is live with the latest tonight. melissa? >> reporter: we have to speak with tom's family members. they are worried, but hopeful. he knows the mountain well and has a lot of outdoor experience. he grew up in the bay area in albany and now richmond. he's been going to tahoe for decades. they want anybody who may have seen him on a trail to contact the sheriff's department. this is a picture of tom in the snow suit he was last seen in. tom has been missing since wednesday. he went skiing around 10:30 a.m. he took the big lift to the top and never returned to his family's cabin in arnold later that evening. >> i believe he was skiing by himself. >> reporter: his niece said he's an experienced skier and outdoors man and knows how to build a snow cave. >> decades of experience
