snow is dumping down in the sierra tonight where a hiker from richmond has been lost since wednesday. now there's threat of avalanches. >> you know, if there's anybody who's going to have a good outcome from this, it's going to be tom. >> good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm ama daetz. i'm dan ashley. tom mullarkey disappeared near bear valley, but his family is holding out hope his outdoor experience will keep him alive. >> dion lim is in the newsroom with the latest. >> tom mullarkey is one of nine brothers and sisters, and i was so moved by how tight knit their family is. 30 members are now at bear valley helping with the search. at an impromptu family gathering in albany friday night, sisters, nieces and relatives of thomas mullarkey cling to each text and facebook message update and to each other for support. >> he loves the outdoors.

he's hiking, camping, skiing. he's been doing it for decades. >> reporter: even for the most skilled outdoorsmaoutdoorsman, challenge, mother nature. tom was reported missing after he didn't return to his arnold cabin after a day of skiing at bear valley. >> that's been the biggest problem is the weather. it makes him hard for him to be found. >> reporter: these photos show chp and air national guardsmen helicopters stranded in the snow after a storm blew in thursday night. >> these members have to be prepared for avalanche conditions so they sl have to b trained not only to read potential avalanche areas. >> reporter: a team of seven from marin county search and recue deployed friday afternoon. 80 shut down for hours with cal transreopening to grid look. >> the main thing is to monitor the weather conditions. if you have to come up to donner pass, make sure you're prepared for the conditions. >> reporter: tom's family holds

valley, mount diablo and hamilton seeing snow. there's hamilton. scattered showers through tomorrow. possibility of an isolated thunderstorm tomorrow. snow will continue over the highest peaks. i'll have a time line of your saturday and i'll let you know if sunday you're going to need those shades or the umbrellas coming up. we're learning more about the stanford law school graduate who was killed in a helicopter crash in iraq yesterday. 37-year-old air national guard member christopher zanetis left an indelible impression on classmates and professors as well. katie marzullo has the story. >> he was such a vibrant presence. i have difficulty speaking of him in the past tense. >> reporter: stanford law professor robert weisberg is still in shock over the death of christopher zanetis. he called him a brilliant young lawyer and amazing human being. >> it's hard to believe how much he did in his life. >> reporter: zanetis was serving a tour with the 106th rescue

wing of the air national guard. he and six other soldiers were killed when their helicopter hit a power line and crashed in iraq thursday. in addition to being a rescue helicopter pilot and attorney, zanetis was a new york fire marshal. he joined the fire department after the 9/11 attacks. he was also an intelligence consultant for nato. >> he'd say, i will have to miss class tomorrow. i've been summoned to peru to do an earthquake helicopter rescue, or professor weisberg, i will have to be a day late on the paper. i can't exactly tell you why. let's just say it's part of my job with nato intelligence. they just summoned me to europe. >> joe reed met zanetis through the stanford law organization. >> somebody a couple years ago joked that he should replace the most interesting man. >> joking aside -- >> he was the most genuine and warm and kind person you could want to meet. >> reporter: add to that modest,

humble, and now desperately missed. at stanford, katie marzullo, abc7 news. developing news tonight from washington where attorney general jeff sessions has fired the deputy director of the fbi, andrew mccabe. late tonight mccabe responded with a blistering statement, and the president is taking to twitter. abc news reporter serena marshall breaks down the late-night firing. >> reporter: with only two days until his retirement, the former fbi deputy director andrew mccabe fired. the decision left to attorney general jeff sessions following an inspector general's office finding he allowed fbi officials to speak with a reporter about the clinton foundation probe and then misled investigators who asked him about it. just yesterday, mccabe arrived at the department of justice to plead with a senior official to not fire him before his planned sunday retirement day. mccabe first made headlines following the firing of fbi director james comey. suddenly becoming the acting director of the fbi, he denied a white house claim that because of james comey, morale was low. >> no, sir. that is not accurate.

the vast majority of fbi employees enjoyed a deep and positive connection to director comey. >> reporter: for months the career fbi official was faced with the president's wrath. fbi deputy director andrew mccabe is racing the clock to retire with full benefits. 90 days to go? the president tweeted. his pension stripped away after 22 years with the bureau. serena marshall, abc news, washington. in a statement released tonight, mccabe said in part, the president's tweets have amplified and exacerbated it all. he called for my firing. he called for me to be stripped of my pension after more than 20 years of service. and all along, we have said nothing, never wanting to distract from the mission of the fbi by addressing the lies told and repeated about us. no more. and the president responded tonight saying, andrew mccabe fired. a great day for the hard working men and women of the fbi. a great day for democracy. sanctimonious james comey was his boss and made mccabe look like a choir boy.

he knew all about the lies and corruption going on at the highest levels of the fbi. president trump's former national security adviser michael flynn spoke publicly today for the first time since he pleaded guilty for lying in the russia investigation. >> what i'm not here to do is i'm not here to complain about who has done me wrong. [ laughter ] or how unfair i've been treated or how unfair the entire process has been. >> that was flynn's only comment about the guilty plea during a campaign event in riverside county. we have now details about a bridge collapse in florida that killed six people. an engineer working on the project left a voicemail with the florida department of transportation on tuesday saying there were cracks found on the north end of the span. crews were working in that spot two days later when it buckled. here's part of that voicemail. >> obviously the cracking is not good and something's going to have to be, you know, done to

repa repair that. from a safety perspective, we don't see any issue there. any rate, call me back when you can. thank you. >> the florida transportation department employee was on assignment and missed the voicemail. crews were working on the north end when it collapses on thursday. an oakland cat rescue is fund-raising to replace windows after a overnight break in caught on camera. both cats that got away have now been located. abc7 news reporter katie utehs has the story. >> reporter: a hair raising break in as this adoption center is caught on this surveillance footage. >> when i saw the footage and i saw the person, you know, especially the absolute indifference to the cats, it was absolutely enraged. >> reporter: exclusive director ann dunn says two cats were gone when she got in. one of the escaped cats ran down the block to this construction site and when workers started their equipment in the morning, it startled her out of her hiding spot. so they were able to catch her. daniel johnstone made the

switch to at&t internet for business. more & less - that's the power of &. only on abc7 news the couple at the center of the kidnapping case the vallejo police department called a hoax is finally speaking about the ordeal. three years al denise huskins was abducted from her boyfriend aaron quinn's home and raped twice. in an interview with good morning america, huskins describes what she thought while being dragged blindfolded by matthew muller. >> i thought i'm going to hear a gunshot and that's it, or i'm going to get pushed off a cliff. >> mueller is serving a 40-year sentence for kidnapping. this week the d.a. added new charges including forcible rape and false imprisonment. vallejo is paying the couple $2.5 million to settle a def nation lawsuit. you can see the entire exclusive interview monday morning on good morning america. new video shows students posing with a gun.

that was accidentally discharged by a teacher in the classroom. the attorney for a student injured by the gunfire released this video. there's also a picture showing a student pointing the gun at a camera. this tus the teacher at sea side high school in monterey county was giving a safety demonstration when his semiautomatic handgun discharged. one student was injured. he has a wall of pictures and a rack of medals as wells a record that he aims to expand. okay ta jenn-airian james smith has run every single los angeles marathon ever held. >> sunday will be no different. reporter rob hayes has the story. >> reporter: when it comes to the l.a. marathon, not much has changed over the years. it's still 26.2 miles. it's still open to anybody who pays the entry fee. and it's still the place you'll find james smith plying the course. >> i know it sounds stupid, and it is. i acknowledge that. it's not the most intelligent thing i've done in my life. >> reporter: that's because most of the people you see here do one l.a. marathon.

smith has done them all. >> and just stuck to it. i've been running since 1972 and done probably, oh, in excess of 100 marathons. this will be the 33rd l.a. marathon that i've done. >> reporter: it's probably important to note that smith turns 81 next week. the retired orange county superior court judge used to do as many as seven marathons a year. but these days, he only does the l.a. run. unwilling to surrender his status as a legacy runner, one of roughly 140 people who finished every l.a. marathon. >> i sometimes wish i had missed one early on so i wouldn't have to keep -- think about keeping on the tradition type of thing. but i didn't, and it's good for me. >> reporter: even though it nearly killed him in 2011 when he fell and hit his head near the 22-mile marker. >> turned out i had a sub durl hematoma. >> but he finished stubbon as ever as his wife judy would

out of the peninsula, into the east bay we go. whipple road, it is wet. as we continue to pan around parts of the bay area here around more aga, danville, we're also seeing some wet roadways. a little bit of a wider picture, i want to show you what's showing up here from mount diablo all the way to mount hamilton, we are seeing some snow showers mixing in. of course today we had so many pictures of rainbows. this is a beautiful one sent to me from burlingame via twitter. thank you for sending that gorgeous shot. we appreciate it. keep your photos coming. you'll be seeing more rainbows like this as we head into tomorrow. so all this wet weather this week hasn't made a difference. let me show you our rainy season. percent of normal. october 1st through now. rainfall, 59% of average. over ten inches of rain there. oakland is at 62% of normal. you'll notice san jose, 52. santa rosa, 59. moffett field, 56% of average. we are slowly moving up.

we're nowhere near average. we can certainly use some more storms but at least we're heading in the right direction. three-day snowfall totals. we're talking homewood, 62 inches. heavenly, 45 inches and more snow is coming. a winter storm warning for the sierra until 5:00 a.m. tomorrow. five to 7 inches of additional snow is expected. chains riequired right now. if you can hold off until tomorrow morning after about 8:00, 9:00, you should be able to get up there without too many problems even though there will still be some snow showers. temperatures right now, 35 in clear lake. 40s, 50s around other parts of the bay area. sutro tower showing you a beautiful view of san francisco. showers and sunshine tomorrow. we're looking at dry, milder conditions sunday, monday, and a wet pattern returns the middle of next week. ourp current system is level one through tomorrow. scattered showers, possibility of an ice lated thunderstorm with hail. between 5:00 a.m. and about 7:00 a.m., you're going to see
