good morning bay area. let's get up and get going. >> this is abc7 mornings. >> it's saturday, march 17th. good morning, and thanks so much for being with us. i'm chris nguyen. we are waking up to more rain throughout the bay area. let's check in with meteorologist lisa argen. she is tracking live doppler 7 and the storm impact scale. >> hi everyone. it is a one on our storm impact scale. that means scattered showers today. the possibility of a thunderstorm. and we still have low snow levels, anywhere from 2500 feet to 3,000 we had. here is the activity loop of the peninsula, the south bay there, and into the santa cruz mountains where we are seeing the most rain from san matteo 280 right now along skyeline boulevard. south san francisco, foster city. and highway 35 into woodside,

even cupertino, a few areas of wet weather. the santa cruz mountains from davenport to santa cruz, it is certainly soggy out there. cool numbers in the north bay with some dry conditions. upper 30s. 45 half moon bay. and your morning looks like this. the scattered showers, mid 40s san francisco. we are going to keep it cool with the showers in the forecast today. chris? >> lisa, thanks. breaking news out of san francisco where one person is dead after a one alarm fire broke out at an adult video and bookstore in the south of market district. it started just after 2:00 this morningan on 6th street between mission and mena. firefighters believe the business was open at the time saying it may be a 24-hour store. it's unclear what sparked the flames. crews say 6th street between mission and fulsome is closed while they investigate. there is the threat of avalanches in the sierra where a hiker from richmond has been lost since wednesday. tom mullarkey disappeared near bear valley. he is one of nine sibling.

the death of christopher tripp zanetis. he called him a brilliant young lawyer and an amazing human being. >> it's hard to believe how much he did in his life. >> reporter: za was serving a tour with the 106th rescue wing of the new york air national guard. he and six other soldiers were killed when they helicopter hit a power line and crashed in iraq thursday. in addition to being a rescue helicopter pilot and attorney, za was a new york fire marshal. he joined the fire department after the 9/11 attacks. he was also an intelligence consultant for nato. >> he would say i will have to miss class tom. i have been summoned to peru to do an earthquake helicopter rescue. or professor weisberg, i will have to be a day late on the paper. i can't exactly tell you why. let's just say it's part of my job with nato intelligence. they just summoned me to europe. >> reporter: joe read met zanetis through the stanford law organization. >> somebody a couple of years ago joked that dos, qis should

replace the most interest somewhering man in the world with tripp you. >> >> reporter: joking aside. >> he was the most generous and kind person you would wanl to meet. >> reporter: add to that modest, himible and now desperately missed. abc7 news. attorney general jeff sessions has fired the former deputy director of the fbi, andrew mccabe. mccabe responded with a blistering statement and the president is now taking to twitter. abc news reporter is a serena marshal breaks town the firing. >> reporter: with only two days until his retirement, the former fbi deputy director, andrew mccabe, fired. the decision left to attorney general jeff sessions following an inspector general's office finding he allowed fbi officials to speak with a reporter about the clinton foundation probe and then misled investigators who asked him about it. mccabe arrived at the department of justice to plead with a senior official to not fire him before his planned sunday retirement day. mccabe first made headlines

welcome back, everyone. only on abc7 news, the couple at the center the kidnapping case that voyage bliss once called a hoax are finally speaking out about the ordeal. three years ago, denise huskins was abducted from her boyfriend aaron quinn's home and raped twice. in an interview with "good morning america" she described what she thought as she was being dragged and blindfolded by matthew muller. >> either i'm going to hear a gun shot and that's it. or i'm going to get pushed off a cliff. >> muller is serving a 40-year sentence for kidnapping. and this week, the d.a. added

new charges, including forcible rape and false imprisonment. the city of voyage is now paying the couple $2.5 million to settle a defamation lawsuit. you can see the entire exclusive interview monday morning on "good morning america." new video shows students posing with a gun that was accidentally discharged by a teacher in a classroom. the attorney for a student injured by the gunfire released this video. there is also a picture showing a student pointing a gun at a a camera. this tuesday the teach he were in seaside county was giving a gun safety none administration when a semiautomatic gun discharged. one student was hurt. he has a wall of medals and as well as a record he hopes to expand. james smith ran ever single los angeles marathon ever held. tomorrow will be no different. reporter rob hays has the story. >> reporter: when it comes to the l.a. marathon not much has

280 wet. as well as mountain view and portola valley. south into the santa cruz mountains over into morgan hill, scattered showers on tap. making the roadways pretty slick. in the mountains a couple more inches though. the winter storm warning has been lifted. but we do have that avalanche threat to continue through the next couple of hours. certainly dangerous conditions there. bring the chains. but the snow winds down. and boy, did we get bonus amounts. anywhere from four and five feet throughout the past three days. and we will see a break. and then we will more snow in terms of feet headed our way by the middle of next week. so we are looking at a pretty good regime with the wet weather coming in, giving us a few breaks here and there. it's 46 in san francisco. 45 in oakland. 44 in mountain view. good morning to you, with low 40s on the coast. 39 half moon bay. so we will have some cloud cover around the bay area today but with some sunshine it should

weather. as we zoom in tighter you can see around foster city and burlingame looking at wet weather. lake view drive, also san carlos and belmont some scattered showers. portola valley, highway 35. pescadero, highway 1 in the santa cruz mountains and the higher elevations it's likely you will see rain/snow mix. we are looking at today cool conditions. 40s right now. cooler weather in the north bay where we have had breaks in the clouds. upper 30s in santa rosa, fair fooel. 41 in livermore. throughout the day today we will see temperatures in the 40s and the scattered showers becoming fewer as we go through the afternoon. chris? >> lisa, thanks. pg&e is responding to several lawsuits filed against the utility of a the north bay wildfires. according to the press democrat, the company is challenging the claim of the lawsuits note nag the official cause has not been determined. pg&e says the fires were the

result of unprecedented weather events including drought, heavy rain, and a high wind event. survivors of the fires accuse the utility of not maintaining power lines and not preparing for high wind. thieves have hit the victoria's secret store at the stanford shopping center four times in one week. on thursday two women grabbed merchandise and got away in a waiting car. last friday was hit again but this time the speeding getaway car hit another car and flipped over. palo alto police arrested a man and a woman from oakland in that case. then on sunday, three women in their 20s stole 100 bras worth more than $6,000. and on monday, 50 bras were taken, worth $1400. time now is 6:31. pressure is growing to raise pay for low wage workers in order to recruit them. if businesses don't, some are finding themselves with not enough workers. abc7 news reporter david louie

looks at the dilemma created by a strong economy. >> reporter: silicon valley's red hot job market means people are working but it's taking higher wages to fill some jobs? we have a de facto minimum of $15 an hour just to get even unskilled labor to commit to showing up for work and continuing with the job. >> reporter: bill neufeld and his wife linda own and operate express employment a staffing agency in san jose. they told abc7 news it takes two to three weeks to fill some jobs when it used to take 24 hours. but the pay has to be higher than san jose's minimum wage of $13.50 because of the region's high cost of living, especially rent. >> it's going to be very difficult for low wage workers, and it's going to be very difficult for businesses that rely on low wage workers. >> reporter: piologist abruptly closed three of its pizzerias in san jose but its corporate office did not respond to our requests to confirm reports that it did so because of staffing

short ans. there is concern that the south bay may have reached a point where some traditionally low wage businesses can't afford or aren't willing to pay wages that cover the region's cost of living? we are probably going to see a migration of business, certain businesses, out of the bay area. hopefully not a huge migration, but it could happen. >> reporter: jamie underwood is starting a new job after having a child and she's getting paid more than expected. >> i thought i would be starting at maybe 13 or 15. and they got me up to 17. >> reporter: the issue of wages also trickles down to the consumer level. customers who go to stores or restaurants where they have cut back on staffing or can't fill positions will find is slower. in san jose, david louie, abc7 news. bart says it has no power to do anything about controversial ads placed at several of its stations. a group called progressives for immigration reform post ads

which say u.s. tech workers your companies think you are expensive, undeserving and expendable. the ads call on congress to reform the visa program which tech companies use the bring in workers from overseas. bart issued a statement saying it doesn't endorse the campaign that that it quote complies with free speech laws that allow advertisers to express a point of view. bart must post these ads to comply with the law. in marin county a battle of old versus new a something established and comfortable versus improvement and the unknown. it's happening in mill valley and involves an old train station turned bookstore and cafe. >> reporter: if you know mill valley, you probably also know there may be no place in town more friendly and welcoming than the old depot. >> it is a place to hang out. >> reporter: and today more. >> it is a complete disaster. >> reporter: think community lightning ready.

community center coexist? >> yes. >> reporter: can you make that promise? >> it is all over italy. that's what all their cafes are. >> reporter: but this isn't italy. it's marin county, where those opposing the change signed a petition and will ask the mill valley city council to act on it at a meeting on april 2nd. in mill valley, wayne friedman, abc7 news. it appears that san francisco's grub steak restaurant will cease to exist as we currently know it. the restaurant in a rail car has been around since 1967 in the poke gulch neighbor. it is a popular with the late night crowd. but according to the chronicle owners filed for a permit to demolish it. the rail car was once part of the east bay transit system that connected oakland, berkeley, and san francisco. facebook's campus is getting much bigger. our media partner, the mercky news, reports the social media giant filed for building permits for a 465,000 square foot building and bridge in menlo park. facebook could employ more than
